    Easter at the Pool

A lile bit of rain and a temperature that did

not quite reach 30oC reduced aendance at

the Newman Aquac Centre’s Easter party

this year but was sll a fun and extremely

well run event thanks to the great pool sta.

The Shire gave free entry, egg painng, and

    Ranger Work Enabled

    Move Back to

CommunityMy name is Alysha Taylor. I am 20 years old

    and this is my story.

In my early years of growing up in

Parnngurr, I formed a close connecon

with my grandparents, Waka and KarnuTaylor. My parents and family moved to

    Port Headland and Bidyadanga. Eventually,

    we moved to Perth.

While living in Perth, I completed Year

12 then completed further study in

engineering and aviaon. I was at the stage

in life where I was applying for jobs and

aending interviews. I even applied to get

my own home. Even though things were

going ok I felt something was missing. My

    spirit was not happy.

Then I heard that my grandparents were

geng old and not in the best of health.

I just knew I needed to go home, to my

place of growing, where I belong. My

grandparents lived alone but now they

have me; someone to care for them, cook,

clean and help around the house. This

makes them feel happy and pleased their

    granddaughter has come home.

My grandmother Karnu told me about the

women’s ranger programme with KJ. Beingable to get a job helped me to make the

decision to come back to the community.

There are not many opportunies for

young Aboriginal girls to get jobs out in

    their country, in remote communies.

Unfortunately, lots of young girls these

days are not doing much and are not

    learning about their country.

I love everything about my grandparents.

Coming home means they can now pass on

all their stories and knowledge about theircountry to me. Being a women ranger at

Parnngurr makes Waka and Karnu happy.

When we are on country, they tell me about

the other ranger stories and we talk about

places they have been, how they lived and

what we need to do to look aer county.

I feel privileged to have a job as a ranger.

I would like to encourage other young

girls to get involved and learn about their

county too. It is important to make your

    spirit feel at peace.

suggests that the event was well received. I

would like to thank the commiee of young

people who assisted to plan and organisethe event and our Youth Services team

who worked relessly to make it happen. It

really was ‘their day – their way’,” said Allen

    ANZAC Day

ANZAC Day in Newman was remembered

with a march from the BHP housing oce

Craig Hoyer is now in his second term as a

Shire of East Pilbara Councillor represenng

    the South Ward.

Craig came to Newman in 2000 to take up

    employment with WDPAC, the Western

    Desert Puntukurnu Aboriginal Corporaon,

    developing sports programmes.

He went on to work with BHP Billiton for

nine years in human resources developing

    Indigenous employment and training and

    opportunies throughout the Pilbara

operaons. Craig is currently based at Mt

    Whaleback as a process technician.

He met his partner, Sereena, here. One of

his three sons sll lives in Newman with his

    family.

Craig is extremely acve in our communitythrough involvement with the Newman

    Naonal Football League commiee

(NNFL), 6NEW’s commiee which is our

    local radio staon 92.9.

He is also Chair of the Local Emergency

    Management commiee (LEMC), and

volunteers with the Bush Fire Advisory

    commiee, Local Recovery commiee, and

    EPIS (East Pilbara Independence Support).

Craig is also one of the coaches for the V

    Swans’ ‘Strength to Succeed’ programme.

Craig is evidently a very acve person as he

is a playing member of the Newman Vets

Football Club and the Newman Clay Target

Club. Craig also enjoys gardening and trail

    bike riding.

Of his gold detecng and Harley hobbies he

said, “I like to get out on my Harley when I

get the chance”. Craig says he loves “going

out bush either riding, detecng or just

enjoying the beauful country out there. Some of our waterways, rock holes, gorges

and Naonal Parks are just magnicent.”

“Newman is a wonderful place to live. Our

sporng facilies are rst class. There are

many things for families to parcipate in

either in town or out vising one of our

    many tourist desnaons,” he said.

Craig and other Councillors of the Shire of

East Pilbara will be available for quesons,

comments and suggesons at the shoppingcentre on Saturday 7 May 2016 between 10

    am and 12 noon.

    St John Ambulance

    Volunteers Honoured

Two of Newman’s St. John Ambulance

    volunteer ocers, Chrisne Larkin and

Andrew Price, were invited to the Annual

Investure of the WA, Commandery Order

of St. John Ambulance at Government

House ballroom on 2 April in Perth.

Andrew, our local pool manger was

1 of 10 St. John volunteers in WA to

    receive Commandery Commendaon in

recognion of his service. Chrisne, with

    her exceponal service to Newman’s

St. John Ambulance since 2004, was

recognised by admission as a member to

the Order of St John; an honour not given

    lightly.

    Conducted by the Dame Commander,

the Excellency the Hon. Kerry Sanderson,Governor of WA, the investure was

an opportunity to recognise and thank

members of St. John at all levels. The

modern Order of St John is an Order

of Chivalry under the Crown and exists

alongside the Priory in Australia. WA is

the only state or territory with a Dame or

Knight Commander, and only WA and the

Australian Priory have the right to bear

the Order Sword, Commandery and Order

    banners on ceremonial occasions.

The Ceremonial aspect of the Investure

added dignity and a memorable sense of

occasion to the process of saying ‘Thank

    you’.

Newman St Johns is currently recruing

new volunteers. Visit the sub centre and

meet the crew, every Wednesday between

    7 pm and 9 pm.

    SAFE Travels

    Western Australia’s largest foster care

based animal rescue organisaon, held its

    inaugural Roundtable Conference in Perth

    recently.

SAFE (Saving Animals From Euthanasia) has

branches operang across the state, from

Kununurra in the north to Esperance in the

south. In addion, branches in Broome,

    Hedland, Karratha, Newman, Carnarvon,

    Kalgoorlie, Bunbury and Busselton came

    together for the event.

SAFE’s Founder, Sue Hedley said, “SAFE

began in 2003 to address the lack of animal

    rescue services in WA’s north-west. I truly

could not have imagined that 13 years later

we would have 10 branches across the

state saving thousands of lives each year.”

Funded by Loerywest, the weekendconference brought the SAFE team

together to nalise an operaons manual

    for new branches.

Ms Hedley says, “Having a manual to guide

new branches will grow the foster care

model of animal care and adopon. We will

be able to reach so many more animals in

    need of rehoming”.

    SAFE branches are established wherever

members of the community are ready to

help companion animals whose lives are

    otherwise at risk. [email protected]
