we were sitting in a “failed” Bible study, just the two of us, at @comonewman. You walked in and said, “I think God may be calling me to religious life.” I responded, “I think he may be calling me to the priesthood.” Today, we stood in the shadows of St. Peter’s Basilica, as a priest and sister.

    One MilliOn Friends

"I want to create the peace of the future. I want to sing my song. I want to have a million friends and stronger will I be able to sing." These lyrics are taken from the song "Un millon de amigos" by Roberto Carlos and is the song that has been performed for every delegation from our parish that has gone to visit our sister parish in El Salvador over the past five years. It is comforting to know that both the people of our parish and the people of the parish of La Libertad long for a future of peace that is long overdue in El Salvador.

I was honored to be able to travel to El Salvador with a student delegation in the spring of 2016. It was a vulnerable time for as I had just lost my father right after Christmas at the end of the year before. Honestly, I was not sure that I had the strength to make the trip. But I trusted that God would provide as He always so graciously has in my life.

What can I say about my experience? Words cannot give due justice. I met a people who had been through so much and yet still loved so deeply and so fiercely. I met a people who had lost loved ones and could easily have given up, yet resolved to create organizations to help move those left behind forward and create a better future for all. I met a people who were more than gracious hosts and loved the opportunity to share about their country, a country they still took pride in even though it had been through very dark times.

We have had the distinct honor the past few days to host two individuals who many of us have met during our travels to El Salvador, Zulma Hernandez and Claudia Martinez. Zulma works for Cripdes Sur, a regional branch of CRIPDES, a nationally and internally recognized grassroots organization that works in over 300 rural communities in El Salvador to promote increased access to development, basic services, employment, and improved living conditions for inhabitants of these communities. Claudia works for SHARE, an organization that strengthens solidarity between the people of El Salvador and the people of the United States in their struggle for economic sustainability, justice, and human and civil rights. Please consider speaking to these two wonderful women in the Gathering Space after Mass.

Did God provide for me on my trip to El Salvador? He most certainly did. He showed me that even through darkness and pain can emerge beauty and love. He showed me that hope never leaves us and we must never abandon it because through it we can build something new. "Behold, I make all things new." I pray that the people of our sister parish arise from the ashes of their troubled past through their commitment to loving each other more deeply and serving each other more fully. And may we do the same for them from afar, truly creating a greater community of one million friends, longing for a future of peace for all.

neWMan VOlunTeer COrPsPERSONAL CARE COLLECTIONDuring November and December, Newman Volunteer Corps is collecting items for Room at the Inn, a winter shelter operated by members of the Columbia community. Room at the Inn guest needs include warm gloves and hats, crew length socks, over-the-counter medications, and travel-size toiletries. Donations may be placed in the large silver bin in the Turner Street entrance. Go to www.roomattheinncomo.org for information about volunteering and a complete list of suggested donations. Thank you to all who donated items for St. Francis House and Z. Lois Bryant House during October!

NEWMAN NIGHT AT THE FOOD BANKOur usual night is the second Monday of each month. The next Newman Night at the Food Bank is Monday, November 12 from 6-8 p.m. The Food Bank depends on volunteer groups, such as ours, to repackage food for the recipients. In October, our volunteers bagged cereal for the buddy pack program. Thanks to all who came, especially those there for the first time. If you've never volunteered at the Food Bank, give it a try this month. There are jobs for anyone 9 years old, or older. For those of you who can't stand for a longer lengths of time, they supply tall chairs that allow you to work while sitting or you can label bags sitting down. Bring friends or family members, if you’d like. All are welcome. The Food Bank requires that volunteers not wear open-toed shoes, such as flip-flops, as a safety concern and to arrive by 6 p.m. If you have questions, please call Gloria Young at 573-673-3070. Please RSVP to serve at the Food Bank on the website at the sign-ups page.

NOVEMBER: REMEMBERING OUR LOVED ONES"We believe that all the ties of friendship and affection which knit us as one throughout our lives do not unravel with death" (Order of Funerals). During the month of November, we remember our deceased family, friends, benefactors, and Dominican Sisters and Brothers. All are invited to participate in remembering and praying for those who have gone before us.

    • November Remembrance Table: We will have a table in the Church for resident and student parishioners to put pictures of deceased loved ones. Pictures may be left in the sacristy prior to November 1. Please put your name and phone number on the back and remember to pick up the pictures at the end of November. If you have a digital picture to be included in the digital picture frame, please email a jpeg version of the photo to [email protected]. Be sure to include the name of the deceased and their birth/death dates.

    • Book of Names of Those Who Have Died: The "Book of Names of Those Who Have Died" will be on the Remembrance Table in the Church for resident and student parishioners to include names of family and close friends who have died this past year.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN GATHERINGAll are invited to the next International Women's Gathering. We will meet at 10 a.m. on Monday, November 12, at Hyemi Lee's house (2509 St. Regis Ct). USCCB CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENTIn the weeks before Thanksgiving, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops conducts the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in seven people lives in poverty. With this collection, you support programs that address the causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those who are struggling across the country. In addition, 25 percent of funds collected remains in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. At St. Thomas More Newman Center, we set aside funds from the offertory every month to tithe to the campaign instead of having a second collection. To find out more information about the campaign or to give a personal donation, visit www.usccb.org/cchd/collection.

JOIN THE CHILDREN'S CHRISTMAS CHOIRAll children in second grade or older are invited to sing or play an instrument in the choir for our Family Christmas Eve Mass! Any children who play instruments must have been playing for at least one year. Rehearsals are the first four Sundays in December from 1-2 p.m. in the Chapel. Parents should RSVP to Kelley at [email protected] if their kids are interested.

SAVE THE DATE - #GIVINGTUESDAY 2018We need your help to support Campus Ministry on Giving Tuesday. If you don’t know, Giving Tuesday happens the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (November 27) and is a time to post on social media who you give to or who you volunteer for. This year, Newman is working to raise funds for the SEEK bus as well as funds for the meals we prepare for the Loaves & Fishes Soup Kitchen. There are two ways students can make a big difference:

    1. Share Newman’s posts on your social media. Tell your family and friends why they should support the ministries here.

    2. Help meet the student goal of $800 on Giving Tuesday. Give online at www.comonewman.org/givingtuesday or on Venmo @comonewman with the comment #givingtuesday. Thank you for your support!

EPHEISANS 3Join us every Wednesday at 9 p.m. for Ephesians Three (E3)! At E3, you'll experience worship music, a talk, prayerful activities, and fellowship! For more information, contact E3 coordinator Taylor Sedgwick at tas3w9@

EMMAUS: AN INSTITUTE FOR DEEPER FAITHEmmaus is a new formation program at Newman for students who have encountered Christ and are seeking continued growth in their faith. Every Tuesday from 5-6 p.m., the Campus Ministry Team will lead sessions meant to help you grow in the areas of human, spiritual, intellectual, and apostolic formation to form you as a missionary disciple. This is not a lecture class — you will find that Emmaus sessions are a dynamic and experiential way of integrating the richness of the faith in your life. For more information, contact Angelle Hall at [email protected].
