    The State Government has commied

    $12.5million in Royales for Regions

funding to establish two pilot projects

growing irrigated crops in the Pilbara.

A trial of irrigaon systems will use

surplus mine water to grow food

and biofuel under the new Pilbara

    Hinterland Agricultural Development

    Iniave (PHADI).

Sorghum will be grown at Woodie

    Woodie on Warrawagine Staon in

site in the central Pilbara is under

The trial will start with a 150ha farm

Since taking on the posion of

    Coordinator for Newman Mainstreet

Project Inc. back in March 2013 a lot

of people have asked me What does

Mainstreet do? My usual response is

    What dont we do!

At Mainstreet, our aim is to involve the

community in projects and events that

    promote community cohesion, identy

    and development. Most people who

have been in town a lile while now

    would know that Mainstreet prides

itself on pung together events for

    the community such as; Internaonal

Womens Day and NAIDOC week (this

    year).

But it is not just about these events.

We also help a lot in the background,

    cooking barbeques at other events

throughout the year, holding the bi-

    monthly markets and producing the

    Newman News and operang The

    Beach Indoor Play Centre.

All of these acvies would not happen

    without our great community minded

    commiee members. As our events

are run by dedicated volunteerspainstakingly organising and preparing

for the event for days, weeks, even

months leading up to them to ensure

    they come together perfectly. This

    involves regularly meengs to discuss

    ideas, liaising with people, businesses

and performers to make the events

    memorable to those aending.

The volunteers do all this with very

lile thanks, but that is what it meansto be a community volunteer and these

are the people who help create the

    communies spirit!

Newman Mainstreet Project Inc.By Nicole Willis

Did you know that Mainstreet now has

a wide array of hire equipment?

We can dress your event or get together

for 5 to 300 people with table cloths,

    chair covers, centrepieces, crockery

and cutlery and other dcor, as well asassisng you in bringing your event to

    life.

In 2013 alone, we have managed to set

up for 300 guests at the Internaonal

Womens Day event, assisted the Fire

Brigade with their anniversary ball, set

up a wedding renewal event and also

a Christmas dinner for forty guests.

On top of all the other equipment we

hired out for others to make their event

    spectacular.

    At Newman Mainstreet Project, we

have got the vision if you have got the

    me!

When families separate it is oen an

    overwhelming process. Frequently

people are not fully aware of the

opons or assistance that is available to

help guide them through the resulng

    emoonal and nancial maze.

Whenever possible it is best to focus on

resolving disputes outside of the Court

    process. Where children are involved,

their wellbeing must always be the

    paramount consideraon.

    Methods of resolving disputes without

    going to Court include:

    Mediaton an independent

    mediator works with both clients

to idenfy the issues that are in

    dispute. They facilitate discussion in

    a safe environment and encourage

the exchange of ideas to help

    develop soluons. Mediators do

    not provide legal advice. Clients

should seek legal advice to ensure

    agreements can be implemented.

Family Separaon Without CourtBy J. Leonie Bailey, Principal Lawyer, DeLancey Legal

    Negotaton lawyers take a more

acve role and negoate with the

other partys lawyer by way of

    leers, phone calls and conferences.

    Collaboratve Practce pares

engage lawyers who are specicallytrained in collaborave law. Both

    clients and their lawyers are

involved in a series of four way

    meengs. Once an agreement is

reached it is formalised by preparing

    the relevant documentaon.

These processes assist clients to design

agreements that are diverse and best

    meet their specic needs. Without

    ligaon, agreements can be reached

in a mely and cost eecve manner.

Becoming involved in the Court process,

on the other hand, is both emoonally

    and nancially costly, me consuming

and the outcome is always uncertain.

To celebrate the opening of the BHPBIO

    sponsored chalets at the Newman

Visitor Centre, a compeon is being

held to name each of the six chalets.

Ideally, the names should follow a

theme or have some relevance to

    our surroundings, culture or history.

The Visitor Centre is giving residents

the chance to enter your ideas in a

    compeon.

The winner will receive two nights'

accommodaon, a dinner pack to be

used in the BBQ area and beverages for

    the evening.

Newman Visitor Centres New ChaletsBy Tracey Bennet

Submit your six proposed chalet names

    to [email protected] by

    Saturday 15 February 2014.

The winner will be noed at

    the accommodaon's ocial

    opening, held toward the end

    of February 2014.

The six chalets are self contained

with a modern, led to the

    ceiling en-suite, refrigerator,

    kele, microwave and toaster.

    Each room features a sing

area, queen size bed, free to air

TV and wi access. One of the

    six chalets is completely ed

    for full disabled access.

Please feel free to stop into

The hills might have been alight

up with a deliberately lit re, but

    within Kangaroo Oval on Saturday

14 December the atmosphere was a

lile chilly with thanks to the team at

BHP Billiton who brought ice to the

    outback for their Winter Wonderland

Christmas party for all employees and

    their families.

From 4.30 pm unl 10 pm it was fun

and fesvies for all. The children

(and young at heart) were kept busy

    with building snowmen, throwing

snowballs, riding the slopes, lots of

bouncy castle acon, face painng and

a cra table to boot. There really was

no excuse for the children not to have

had a wow of a me.

The food was fabulous and plenfuland with thanks to the generosity of

Newman's own Iron Lions there was

also snow cones and popcorn to enjoy.

    childrens Christmas wishes while also

posing for family picture. It was a truly

    magical night.

The Christmas party at the Newman

    Playgroup on Monday 16 December

    entertained the children with much

    delight and surprise.

    While snacking on delicious Christmas

treats the children eagerly had theirfaces painted, engaged in inside play,

as well as outside in the sandpit and

    water tables.

Although the sun was already beaming

with heat, it did not prevent a swarm

of children from rushing outside to

see Santa emerge from a Fire Truck

    with sirens blaring. The childrens

    excitement could barely be contained

when they were given permission toclimb onboard Santas Fire Truck and

experience the view from up high.

Santas jolly arrival brought extra joy

all around as he hand delivered gis

    personally addressed to each child.

    It was a wonderful Christmas

    celebraon enjoyed by all who

aended. A big Christmas cheer of

thanks to the playgroup members whoassisted in organising the event and to

those who parcipated on the day.

    With the emergency services being

extremely busy driving Santa to all

    his engagements, Santa may well

have arrived on a lawn mower to the

    Newman Neighbourhood Centres

family Christmas party on Friday 13

    December.

    The children played pin-the-nose on

Rudolph, threw velcro balls to decorate

a tree, tried to lasso mini Christmas

    trees, and other acvies. Everyone

then migrated inside to share the

plaers of food that everyone brought

and be entertained by some gorgeous

    lile dancing Christmas trees.

All the children where then treated to

a gi and hug from Santa.

    Thank you to all involved.

    The Pioneers Football and Sporng

Families with children of all ages joined

of free, fun acvies including a sausagesizzle, fairy oss, jumping castle, face

painng, slip n slide and more.

    Children waited in eager ancipaon

for the Man of the Month, Santa Claus,

to arrive. In true Newman style, he was

    escorted by the Newman Voluntary

Fire and Rescue Service to the Pioneers

    clubrooms.

The engine driver, Allan McDonagh, heightened the excitement levels by

alerng everyone he was close with the

    tradional sounding of sirens.

    The event certainly reected the

strong sense of community spirit that

is synonymous with life in Newman.

    Everyone certainly appeared to get

    involved and enjoy themselves no

    maer what their age.

The event would not have been so

    successful without the generous

    support received from volunteers and
