    Right ARm of the ChuRCh

Next weekend in Jefferson City, Fr. Reginald, Bishop McKnight, and Newman's Steve Hemmann will join thousands of other Catholic gentlemen as full members of the Knights of Columbus in the fourth degree. The members of the Newman Center council congratulate all the new Sir Knights.

The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic men's organization that was started in

1882 by Fr. Michael J. McGivney as a way to unite men of faith and to provide for families of deceased members. The organization models itself on the four principles of charity, unity, fraternity, and patriotism (the Knights were instrumental in getting the phrase "under God" included in the pledge of allegiance).

The Mizzou Knights pride ourselves on our charitable activities. In the last year we were able to give over $8,500 to charities including the parish, Pro-Life groups, the Food Bank, and Special Olympics to name just a few. We raise the money through tailgating before MU football games, brunches, and our Lenten fish fry.

When it was originally founded, members met once or twice a month for prayer and fellowship. We continue that today, beginning and ending every meeting with prayer. All the decisions we make are based on faith: deciding what organizations to support, where our funds go, how we spend our time together. We celebrate fraternity with SEC muffins, man-mosas, and chili-cheese-brat-burger-dogs (with kraut, of course). We get together for holidays with our families and assist our brothers when the times are tougher.

The Knights of Columbus around the world has fashioned itself as the "strong right arm of the church." In these times where it is often the church itself that has done much of the harm, the Knights are prepared to stand for the faith that began when Jesus called some fishermen to follow him. Through our Building the Domestic Church campaign, we are focusing on the family and strengthening the bonds that tie us all together in the belief that how we live our faith in the parish and community will have a ripple effect that will benefit the world.

We, the Newman Center Knights of Columbus, have accomplished great things here at the parish and in the community. Much of that is thanks to you, the Newman parishioners, for attending our events and being generous with your donations. As Jesus said, however, "the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few" (Luke 10:2). Simply put, we could use a few more hands. We are able to do so much good and would be honored to have more of the men of the parish to help do those things. We don't ask for a lot of your money or much of your time, just what you feel you can give. We are younger fathers and retired grandfathers and have a place for everyone in between. If you are interested or have questions, please email us at [email protected]. We look forward to hearing from you.

    KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS

Next week is the annual Parish Picnic! Come to the Gordon Shelter in Stephens Lake Park (see photo below) on Sunday, October 14. Food will be served from 12:30 to 2 p.m., but you are welcome to join us any time from 12-3 p.m. The main dish (from CoMo Smoke and Fire) and drinks will be provided. Parishioners are asked to bring a dish as follows:

    • Last name: A - O: salad/side dish• Last name P-Z: dessert

There will be games for children and a door prize raffle from a local restaurant! Bring a lawn chair if you would like — the shelter is smaller than in previous years. Come enjoy good food and good company!

CAtholiC SteWARdShip AppeAlOur Catholic Stewardship Appeal begins in our parish this week. In this annual event, Catholics from across the diocese pledge their prayers and support for vital ministries and services to our parishes and communities. In the next couple of weeks, you will receive a letter from Bishop McKnight inviting you

to participate in this year's appeal. As you reflect on the information about the CSA and the life of our Church, please remember that we are called to give out of gratitude. God's blessings are so abundant, who does not have reason to be grateful?

NEWMAN NIGHT AT THE FOOD BANKOur usual night is the second Monday of the month from 6-8 p.m. The next night at the Food Bank is Monday, October 8. The Food Bank depends on volunteer groups, such as ours, to repackage food for the recipients. In September, 30 Newman volunteers bagged 3 crates of carrots! Thanks to all who came, especially those there for the first time! If you've never volunteered at the Food Bank, give it a try this month. There are jobs for anyone 9 years old or older. For those of you who can't stand for a longer lengths of time, they supply tall chairs that allow you to work while sitting or you can label bags sitting down. If you need volunteer hours for school or confirmation class, this is a great, easy way to earn them. Bring friends or family members, if you'd like; all are welcome. The Food Bank requires that volunteers not wear open toed shoes, such as flip-flops, as a safety concern and to arrive by 6 p.m. If you have questions, please call Gloria Young at 573-673-3070. The Food Bank’s address is 2101 Vandiver Drive. NEWMAN NIGHT AT LOAVES AND FISHESOn the second Wednesday of each month, Newman cooks and serves dinner at Loaves and Fishes Soup Kitchen here in Columbia. The next Newman Night at Loaves and Fishes is Wednesday,October 10. Volunteers are needed to cook the food, serve dinner, or bring desserts! Sign up to volunteer on the parish website under "Parish Sign Ups." Loaves and Fishes is located at 702 Wilkes Blvd. (at the Wilkes Blvd. United Methodist Church).

For Parents: God wants marriage to be more than a contract; it's also a covenant, a sacred promise, but it's not easy. Divorce happens for complex reasons. Talk to kids about how important marriage is but also how we can show compassion to those who face divorce.
