Dear All
We are in the season of summer and it has been a good one so far. Summer brings the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. I remember being able to go many years ago when I was a student and sat in the Gods, as the gallery was called, or the pit, just in front of the orchestra where you either stood or sat on the floor. It is quite pleasant as there were flowers and a fountain. Later when I lived near Birmingham I was able to go and hear the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra under the then young, dark, curly haired Simon Rattle. Yesterday I listened to a programme about the new director, a young woman from Lithuania. Music has always been part of Worship. Much is made of this in the Old Testament and we know David of Goliath fame, was a good musician, singing and playing the harp as well as a dab hand with a sling. We are a few hundred years on from the likes of composers such as Handel and Haydn but even today a lot of new music is still composed for worship in Church. Our Cathedrals are still places of excellence with their choirs and magnificent organs and we have one of them at Wells. We are fortunate in our parishes to still have very able organists, pianists and a Benefice Choir. However we are losing Chris Perrin, at Marston through arthritis and Mary Dron at Chilton, who is moving, and we thank them for all their lively playing over the years. If there are any organists or pianists out there in our Benefice do get in touch if you could possibly help with our music rotas. This year is one where we have our Benefice Project to raise money for a charity, currently Starfish Asia, which provides education on a shoe string for the poorest of Pakistan. Quiz sheets are going round at a £1 a time, we have had pancakes and BBQ and now in August are having a concert in Marston Magna Church. Not only do we have organ and piano but our organists have good contacts and relations who come and add to the variety of music. The concert will be on Sunday 13th August at 7pm and will include wine and nibbles. Do try and support this event even if you do think you would like the music, you may be surprised how good it is. Letter from the Right Reverend Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells In a magazine recently I read about a distance learning course being offered by St. John’s College in Nottingham specifically for Church Administrators. It combines study alongside working, takes about 18 months, and leads to a Certificate in Christian Studies. Those who have completed the course speak of how not only it has transformed their way of working, but how it changed the way others within the church perceived them and the work that they do. I found that really encouraging. All churches are dependent on the skills, gifts and talents of church members offering their time and expertise to help build up the Church. Valuing, appreciating and developing those God-given gifts is so important. When Paul wrote to the Church at Corinth he said; ‘Now to each one has been given
the Spirit’s gifts for the good of all.’ (1 Corinthians Chapter 12) He then goes on to give examples of those gifts. He mentions prophecy and healing, preaching and teaching, leadership and tongues and many others. But tucked away in that list of gifts and ministries we read that God has appointed people with the ability ‘to help others and those with gifts of administration’. Administrators are mentioned in the same list as apostles, miracle workers and prophets. Although as anyone who has ever been involved in Church work knows, administrators often are ‘miracle workers’, ensuring that all the necessary administrative tasks of the church are done efficiently and effectively. The word Paul uses for ‘administrator’ is the same word that is used for a pilot of a ship, whose task it is to steer the ship safely through the rocks and the shoals to the harbour. Administrators seldom stand in the limelight, they work in the background and shoulder the routine but essential work on which everything else depends. We don’t always know who counts the collection, produces the service sheets, takes the minutes, or staples the church magazine together. But God knows and without all those people the mission of the church would not go forward as it does. Hurrah for administrators. The Right Reverend Peter Hancock + Bishop of Bath and Wells

Thanks to the Wessex Morris men who entertained us so admirably, and all those that attended the Fete and made the day such great a success enjoyed by all. A grand total of £2,297.34 was raised which will go towards the Church and Village Hall. Thank you all again. Lucy Caruth FRIENDS OF SOMERSET CHURCHES AND CHAPELS CHARITY RIDE AND STRIDE (Saturday 9th September 2017) After last year’s ride in the rain, I thought I’d have another shot at the FSCC bike ride in the hope that the weather will be better and I don’t get a puncture. Last year on a route out to Glastonbury/Street and back, I cycled 83 miles and visited 51 Churches. This will be my tenth ride and I would like to add one more Church to the total and get to 52. But on checking the map any additional ones seem to involve quite a few extra miles and some nasty hills. I will have to see how the legs are on the day. Any money raised goes wholly towards Church maintenance and repair. Half goes to Rimpton Church and half to the FSCC general fund which makes grants for Church maintenance in Somerset. If anyone would like to support this cause, please contact myself, John or Brenda Spencer. Sponsorship may be on a per church basis or a fixed sum Ricky Gibbs, Chez Nous, (Tel. 01935-850263) THE RAIN REPORT June started and finished with considerable rainfall, but the middle of the month saw 14 successive days with not a drop of rain. There were 12 wet days, 7 at the beginning of the month and 5 at the end, totalling 63.5 mms (2 ½ inches) of rainfall which is just 1 mm above the June average. This brings the total rainfall for the first half of the year to 349.5 mms (13 ¾ inches), 8 % below the average for this period of 380 mms (15 inches). Ricky Gibbs.
The Children’s Society The boxes that supporters of The Children’s Society kindly hold during the year are due for opening in the month of August. Rimpton Parish Council
At this time of year when plant and hedge
growth are at a maximum, it would be helpful if
all of us could make sure that vegetation for
which we are responsible does not exceed our
property boundaries, and does not cause
obstruction by encroaching across pavements,
the highway, or the playing field.
It is a little way ahead of the autumn as yet, but
by way of a heads-up, we would ask all owners

of trees that overhang pavements, walkways
or the highway to ensure that the fallen leaves
are blown or swept away – especially from
drain gullies and kerb gutters - as part of our
self-help approach to flooding prevention.
It was recently brought to our attention that
some red spray-painted graffiti has appeared
on the road in High Street. This is of course
illegal, and has been reported to Somerset
County Council Highways Dept.
Marston Magna & Rimpton WI Report Tradition has it that we enjoy an outing in July instead of meeting in the Village Hall. This year we considered visiting a jig-saw-puzzle-maker in Dorset or alternatively a picnic on Ham Hill. Both were thrown out in favour of an old favourite, Forde Abbey. The monks may have been banished by Henry VIII but he can’t keep us out! Many of our party had been on numerous occasions but the colourful flower borders and productive vegetable garden together with extensive grounds gave much pleasure. Our personal guided tour was instructive and lunch in the vaulted dining room proved popular as well. We meet again on Monday 14th August at 7.30pm with a demonstration of a summer menu that requires no cooking. All requests for “a taste” will be granted until supplies run out! There are no age restrictions to WI membership. I joined with my mother at the tender age of 28 and have been a regular with a few breaks throughout my life. It is a rare opportunity in this modern world to share quality time with women of all ages and from all walks of life. Minutes of the Meeting of Rimpton Parish
Council held in the Village Hall on Tuesday 4th
July 2017 at 7.30pm. All Local Electors were
invited to attend.
Present: J Tricker (Chairman), R Billings (Vice Chair), S Levett, C Brady, plus Cllr M Lewis, E Meecham (Clerk), and 7 Members of the Public The meeting commenced after an Open Session
for Rimpton Parishioners only. Notice was given
that the tree at Pound House was due to be cut
shortly and there would be quite a bit of traffic in
the area. The clerk read an email received from
Mr Gibbs regarding grass cutting, the council
discussed the content and are unaware of any
restrictions on times that lawns should be cut. Mr
A Horsington and Mr P Horsington introduced
themselves to the meeting; they have recently
purchased Pitfield Corner Farm. They informed
the meeting of their intention to keep cattle on site
and to tidy the site. General discussion was held
regarding various aspects that will need their
attention.
Agenda items
1. Apologies – Apologies were received from Mrs Cave-Bigley 2. Declarations of Interest – None received 3. Minutes of the previous meetings – Unanimously agreed as a true and accurate record of the meetings 4. Matters arising from previous minutes and not on Agenda a. 1703 – 1f – Contact Dog Warden re: report of dog fouling – Clerk – The Clerk informed the meeting that a response has been chased. b. 1703 – 11 – Newsletter item – Clerk – The article has not yet been submitted for inclusion within the newsletter, but will be sent to be included with these minutes. c. 0205 – 10b – HGV sign – R Billings – This will be covered under the Highways report. d. 0205 – 10c – Letter to PCC – Clerk – Complete. e. 0205 – 14a – Contact number to be forwarded – Clerk – Complete. f. 0205 – 14a – Meeting with Chris Cooper to be arranged – J Tricker – A meeting was held and there was a satisfactory response. Extra work has been agreed in readiness for the fete. There is a need to ensure that the cost is correct and reflects the work being done by SSDC. g. 0205 – 16 – Noticeboard quotes – Clerk & J Tricker – As yet no quotes have been sought,

however, Mr Tricker and Mr Brady will discuss the purchase and installation of new Perspex. 5. Community Safety & Police Issues – There was an email circulated via the Neighbourhood Watch email system. There was an attempted theft of a motorcycle at Lower Farm. If anyone has any information they are urged to inform the police. 6. County and District Councillors report – Cllr Lewis gave his reports. At SCC there are issues regarding Hinkley Point. The Energy Innovation Centre at Highbridge with regard to businesses. It is anticipated that due to their current investment the French Government will continue with the Hinkley Point scheme. At SSDC the council are still continuing with their ‘Transformation’ programme. It is anticipated that there will be savings of £2.5 million and will result in different methods of operating the services. It was also reported that the costs of some of the projects have not been realised, for example the Westlands project is costing more than anticipated. 7. Community Issues a. Village Fete – It was unanimously agreed by the Council that temporary structures and dogs should be allowed on the play area for the fete. 8. Finance a. Finance statement – Agreed. b. Receipts – None – Noted. c. Payments - Clerks Salary, HMRC, Clerks expenses, £40 Internal Audit – All agreed unanimously. d. Website costs – the website costs are increasing from £30 to £34.80 (not including VAT). The Council unanimously agreed to the increase. Dr Billings gave a report on the website statistics, please see appendix 1 for more detail. e. The warranty on the laptop will expire this year. PC World has offered a 4 year extension for £164. It was unanimously agreed not to take up the offer. 9. Governance – Nothing to report 10. Planning Applications:
17/02323/FUL – Woodlands, Roe Lane, Rimpton,
Yeovil, Somerset, BA22 8FG – Amendments to
previously approved scheme 13/00646/FUL. New
open fronted double garage. Temporary use of
studio as dwelling until completion of main house
construction and retention of No2 Woodlands as a
site office prior to demolition. Retrospective
permission to erect stone retaining wall around
parking area, adjacent to White Post Lane and
form covered refuse and recycling bin store.
Retrospective permission to re-contour areas of
the site using earth spoil from ground works, and
create reed bed/pond. – The applicant gave the
history of the application. Following discussion the
Council unanimously agreed that they had no
objections to the proposal.
11. Highway matters a. Highways report – Dr Billings gave his highways report, see appendix 2 for further details. Various items were discussed. The issue of the visibility when joining the A359 at the Pitfield exit from the village is poor due to the lack of hedge maintenance. Dr Billings will report the issue to SCC. There is also a report of graffiti on the road, this is illegal and should not be done. It was agreed that an article be written for inclusion in the newsletter to include this. There is a large pothole outside 4 Daisyfield, Dr Billings will report this to SCC. 12. Footpaths a. Public Footpaths strimming – Footpath Warden Report – The clerk read the report as provided by Mr Gibbs. 13. Environment/Trees a. Tree warden report – Nothing to report. 14. Flooding – It was confirmed that the bid for grant funding has been sent to SCC. 15. Playground – In Mrs Cave-Bigley’s absence Dr Billings gave the report, please see appendix 3 for further details. a. Playground report b. Roundabout – It was suggested by Cllr Lewis that James Duvall or Tim Cook at SSDC may be able to provide some grant funding for assistance with the cost, Mr Brady agreed to contact them. c. Painting – It was agreed the Mr Brady and Dr Billings will try to arrange a site meeting with Tim cook of SSDC. d. Bins – It was agreed that 1x Hooded Trimline bin in green be ordered (£87.90) and 1x Oaklands Plastic Cesar in black be ordered (£134.95), the council also agreed to approach Marcus Ryall regarding assistance to install the new bins. e. Hedge cutting – the hedge surrounding the play area and associated with 6 Daisyfield is an issue. It needs cutting. It was agreed that the clerk would contact Yarlington to discuss it. 16. Clerk’s report and correspondence – Nothing to report. 17. Any other urgent matters raised with the permission of the Chairman – Mr Brady asked for an update from the clerk regarding the enforcement case, this was duly given. 18. There being no further business the meeting was closed at 8.57pm. Date of next meeting – Tuesday 5th September

NEWS FROM THE HOME FRONT
Greetings from all at Fir Villa. July 2017!
Wow, these monthly round ups come around quickly!!! A busy month yet again for the Fir Villa camp. Lots of activities and new faces to talk about. With the residents now having more space we have started to compile a new activities plan for them that will run throughout the day, focusing on the residents being as involved in the home, events and activities as possible. We have had a varied sample of musicians and productions coming to visit the residents. We started the month with a visit from Sharandy’s Birds of Prey and the Alpaca’s from Alpaca Adventures, the residents really enjoy having the animals visit and they are all so well trained and sociable, (the animals as well as the residents!!) We’ve also enjoyed performances from local musicians and music groups these include the Shorton Ukulele Group, Robin Geard on his Accordion and our regular music therapist Frances Musica and Julia Sutherland. As a home Fir Villa is committed to supporting local community groups and are now visiting the Village Cafes in the area. We plan to make these
visits regularly with a mix of residents attending each time and hope to build relations with the villagers and the community. Some of our residents have also started attending The Green Shed in Sherborne, which really encourages them to get involved with making products to sell to support the charity. The residents really enjoy getting their hands dirty and getting involved, it really does encourage them to be more active and to reminisce on their past work and skills, which is great for us to see. The residents have also been taking part in the “School in a Bag” campaign, helping to prepare bags to be sent and showing their interest in the charity. We plan to fill more bags throughout the year with the support of the “School in a Bag” advisors. In the coming months we have loads more music and activities planned that will hopefully entertain the residents. As always, I really do encourage outside agencies and volunteers to come and share their knowledge and skills with us. Parents Encouraged to apply for up To 30 hours Of Funded Childcare Somerset County Council is encouraging working parents to apply for up to 30 hours of funded childcare for three and four year olds. From September 2017, the Government is doubling the amount of funded childcare hours from 15 hours to 30 hours a week (for 38 weeks each year). The additional hours will support working parents who are struggling to pay childcare costs, or who may be looking to increase their working hours. Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, said: “This is a great initiative and one that really benefits working parents, potentially saving families up to £5,000 per year. Don’t delay, apply now to see how much funded childcare you

are entitled to and reserve your place at a local childcare provider.” Parents can claim up to 30 hours of funded childcare per term-time week (38 weeks) for each of their three or four year olds. This can also be spread across the year to include school holidays, up to a maximum of 1,140 hours a year. To qualify both parents must be working and earning on average at least the equivalent of 16 hours at the National Minimum or Living Wage per week. And parents must earn less than £100,000 a year. To apply for this new offer, parents need to go to www.childcarechoices.gov.uk If eligible, parents will receive an 11 digit code to take directly to a participating childcare provider. Benefice Choir The choir has been asked to sing at a wedding on 5th August at 1pm in Marston Magna Church. Please do your best to attend if you are able. MARSTON MAGNA & RIMPTON GARDENING CLUB
We had a super evening at the Garden Party on the 15th July, despite the slight rain showers. A good time was had by all. Ruth and Joan’s garden was a delight and a lot of hard work was put on before the party. Well done girls! We had a good attendance of nearly 50, if only the meetings were so well attended.
The next meeting is the Garden Show on 9th September, at Rimpton Village Hall. The
schedule is enclosed with this magazine – keep hold of it as the entry forms are on the back. More will be available on the day if more than one family member is entering. Hope all the children have been busy as there are cups and money to be won.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON
MONDAY 17th July 2017
PRESENT: CLLR, Fred Monson (Chair), Sam

Open session - Seven members of the public
were present.
A lengthy discussion was held, regarding the
speed of vehicles and the size of HGV’s that pass
through the village. The difficulty that pedestrians
have using the limited pavements is also a
concern. Highways visited the site of the recent
serious accident at the corner of Rimpton Rd.
Suggestions for improvements include a 20mph
speed limit, a new ‘sharp bend’ sign, bollards, a
raised pavement and chevrons, although none of
these will offer a complete solution. The PC
discussed Speed indicator devices, traffic lights
and traffic speed calming tables. SC will write a
letter/petition and distribute it, through councillors
to other villagers to ask Highways to take urgent
action, as the PC feel it is only a matter of time
before there is an even more serious or fatal
accident.
When ML arrived we asked him if he would
consider putting in a bid for us under the ‘Small
Improvement Scheme’ ML will consider this, but
he has other areas that are currently a priority, and
we did have works paid for under this scheme four
years ago. ML will go back to Highways and
discuss this matter further; he will also look into
the possibility of requesting HGV recognition
cameras. LG to request more frequent speed
enforcement visits.
A member of the public highlighted the fact that a
footpath across a field beyond the Marston Inn
has been completely blocked by the farmer. PG
will report this.
The hedge between the Village Hall and
Townsend is extremely overgrown. SM will report
this to Yarlington and ask them to take remedial
action.

there was no request to hold an election for the
two vacancies, Rex Knott and Lawrence Hopkins
were nominated and unanimously voted in.
Acceptance of office and Declarations of interest
forms were signed. FM welcomed them both to
the PC.
6. SAVILLS – INFORMATION ON FUTURE
PLANNING APPLICATION FOR WICKHAM
FARM - A representative from Savills Planning
Consultants attended the meeting to carry out an
initial consultation on a proposed outline planning
application, on behalf of the Wickham Farm
Partnership. Outline plans were distributed which
showed the siting of eight new buildings and two
listed barn conversions. The consultant
acknowledged that the visibility at the egress to
the site was currently difficult and that
improvements would be needed. The consultants
have been unable to get SCC Highways to meet
with them and have therefore employed a private
consultant to look into the entrance issues. As
part of the site is in the flood zone, a full risk
assessment of the site will be carried out. The aim
will be to reduce the run off of surface water from
the site. The next stage will be a public exhibition
of the plans in the village hall. This will be
advertised in the magazine, for probably
September. The aim is to submit a full planning
application later in the autumn.

7. REPORTS FROM SOMERSET COUNTY
COUNCILLOR, DISTRICT COUNCILLORS,

BODIES AND COUNCILLORS ON THEIR
AREAS OF INDIVIDUAL RESPONSIBILITY –
Cllr Mike Lewis advised us that the amount of
Government funded Childcare available to 3 and
4 year olds, is doubling from 15 to 30 hours per
week. A statement about this will be put into the
magazine.
8. PLAY PARK –SSDC have completed the re-
staining of the climbing frame steps and re-
painting of the skate ramp. There was a question
regarding the repairs to the concrete slope leading
to the footbridge, whether there was still a gap left
in the concrete, where the wooden boards had
been removed. LG to follow this up.
KW has been carrying out monthly visual
inspections of the play park. There is nothing new
to report, except that the brambles and hedge
needs cutting back. SM to ask the Gardening
Handyman if he could action this.
9. GRASS CUTTING – The Gardening Handyman
is charging £18 per hour to cut the grass in the
park and the triangle. SM to check why he is
leaving a small area of grass uncut in the park.
10. CAR PARK WHITE LINING – SSDC have offered to go 50/50 on the price of a clean-up, sweep and wash down of the Village hall car park. The cost to us would be £209. After discussion, it was decided that M Jagelman would ask the Marston Inn, who carried out the recent work to their car park, and what the cost was, before we decide to proceed. He will report back in our September meeting. 11. FLOOD PLAN – SM is attending a meeting in
Queen Camel on the 18th July. SC hopes to
attend also.
12. SPEED AWARENESS COMPETITION – FM

13. CHAIRMAN'S ANNOUNCEMENTS – Following a successful Village open weekend, FM suggested that we should have a recreation field for village use. Possible sites include the Moat field or land owned by County Farm Estates, adjoining Little Marston Road/Townsend. LG was asked to write to them stating our desire to extend our request for a small amount of land under the Community Asset Transfer Scheme. SC to provide further details and a plan (as in May PC minutes) 14. CLERKS REPORT – LG reported that following the successful implementation of the
permit scheme, the Somerset Waste Partnership was now able to extend the time that vans, trailers etc. were able to use the recycling centre. Full details can be found at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk 15. CORRESPONDENCE – Our ICO registration
has been completed. We have received a VAT
refund of £120.20. We received a poster of the
SSDC Gold Star Awards for 2017. Nominations
are now open; so if you know a young person who
is doing something special in the community, a
youth club/organisation that deserves some
recognition, or an adult who gives up their time
supporting young people, then please nominate
them for a Gold Star. The poster will be displayed
on the Village hall notice board.

Take the time to check that you are on the cheapest tariff by using a comparison website. Look at the small print on your bill, it will give you the information about how your average usage which you enter into the website and it finds the best deals. Your bill will also let you know if you are on your company’s best tariff. You can phone and ask if you are not sure. September is when you register for the Winter Warmer Discounts with your energy company. If you are on pension credits or are considered vulnerable, you can be eligible for more than £100 off you winter bill – if you register. Give your energy companies a call and see if you are eligible.
Once you have thought about the cold weather, now think about the hot weather! Independent Age have a super booklet called Summerwise which you can download and print or call 08003196789. It contains useful tips such as checking the effect your medication can have on your hydration and skin sensitivity. Don’t forget also that medication often has to be stored usually under 25C watch out for those hot days! They also remind us that we do need some sun exposure to get our quota of vitamin D from the UVB rays and they don’t travel through glass. Cycling, camping, kayaking and a search for new helpers Our Beavers were lucky enough to be invited to Sherborne Fire Station where they learned how to put out a fire at home. Most of the children attended their first overnight 'Camp' in North Cadbury Village Hall. They slept in tents and took part in a pioneering challenge using spaghetti and marshmallows! The Beavers have also been cycling, & completed Navigation Stage 1 badge - map reading and compass skills. This month has been really busy for the Cubs. We had a really successful camp with all the other Cub groups in the district. We have been learning about wildlife conservation at Babcary Meadows, and we have been learning about farming at Wales Dairy. Thank you so much to the Somerset Wildlife Trust and the Hewlett family for hosting these fantastic visits.
The Scouts have been making the most of the better weather enjoying evening bike rides, hiking and some fantastic kayaking at Langport. Preparations are also well underway for the great summer camp adventure to Kent International Jamboree with West Coker Group and around 6,000 other Scouts from all over the world! Griffiths Tel. 850647. The Mobile Library no longer comes to Marston Magna, but it will be in Rimpton on Wednesday 23rd August between 12.10 and 12.40. The Mobile Library will continue to call once every 4 weeks, providing it is used. Re-cycling- Every THURSDAY in Marston Magna and Rimpton from 7 a.m. Wheelie Bin Collection also from 7.a.m. On Thursday 10th & 24th August. STOP PRESS The VALE OF CAMELOT GROWERS, SPARKFORD are closing for their summer break on 6th August. If you would to go before that they still do have some PYO, but supplies are getting low.
The total raised at the Marston Magna Village Event on 10th
June was £3,393. Grateful thanks to all who worked so hard to
make the event a success and to our sponsors from the local
business community. Proceeds from the day will be given to the
Church and the Village Hall and to one or more village causes that
residents would like to support. If you have a suggestion of a project
