THE RECTORY September 2020

Dear All

September has brought some improvement to our everyday life in the time of Corvid 19. We can go out to meals and wedding receptions can be held again, as well as services in Church, providing numbers are not over 30. Harvest is now upon us. Sadly, it is not possible to have our Harvest Suppers or our annual flower shows. But we can still have services of Harvest Thanksgiving. The organs can be played too. Please do not bring any perishable produce, in spite of it being so good to decorate the Churches with. Instead please bring non-perishable items, which can then be taken to the Lord's Larder, the Food Bank in Yeovil. If you would like to send a donation the address is:- The Lord's Larder Treasurer The Gateway Addlewell Lane Yeovil. BA20 1QN Cheques payable to YCST We do have much to be thankful for. We were able to still have plenty of food even during Lockdown thanks to the wonderful volunteers. We have had glorious weather to enjoy. Fir Villa has had no corvid 19 cases and visiting from outside has begun. We pray that cooler weather will not bring more cases of the virus. Being thankful, gratitude is a virtue which should perhaps be more practised. We are prone too much to moan and complain. Lockdown brought a marked change for the better in the environment and showed all too clearly the harm we are doing to the planet, which gives us what we need to support life. Here is the first verse of the cricket commentators short harvest hymn. God, whose farm is all creation, Take the gratitude we give. Take the finest of our harvest, Crops we grow, that we may live. Revd. Barbara 01935 850745 [email protected].

Letter from the Right Reverend Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath and Wells

For Parish Newsletters – September 2020

I am writing this whilst receiving treatment in hospital for leukaemia, although by the time you read this, I hope that I may be back home having completed my first course of chemotherapy. The first thing I want to say, and I am sure this is echoed by so many, is what wonderful treatment and care I have received from everyone in the hospital. Their kindness, concern and professionalism are beyond words. What is an unusual experience for me, however, is that I have not been allowed to leave my room and the doors and windows have been kept firmly shut. Looking out of my window and craning my neck upwards I am just able to get a glimpse of the sky outside. Without that I would not know whether it was sunny or cloudy or raining outside. Not that I am in any way complaining. I am safe and receiving the best care imaginable. It is also important whatever may happen to keep a sense of proportion. I vividly recall hearing Terry Waite speak when he came to the diocese on one occasion. It is unimaginable what he went through in those 1763 days in Beirut – the first four years of which were spent in solitary confinement, blindfolded, in a basement room with no windows, with no books or papers, chained to a radiator and sleeping on the floor. His courage and faith are remarkable and have inspired so many people since. I remember him once being interviewed and being asked what the happiest moment of his life was, one that he would cherish forever. He replied: ‘When my blindfold was taken off during my release in November 1991. I’d been in the dark – in a basement or blindfolded - for years. For the first time in five years I saw the sky, the grass, the colours, and I felt the wind on my face.’ Terry Waite is also very clear about how the prayers of so many others supported him through those years. As I write I am also very aware of all the prayers that have and are being said for me. That is both humbling and encouraging and once I am getting out and about again, I look forward to being able to thank you personally. With my thanks, best wishes, and prayers for you, + Bishop Peter

THE RAIN REPORT After a wet June, July returned to normal summer weather. There were 13 wet days with rainfall totalling 43 mms (1 ¾ inch), well below the July average of 61mms (2 ½ inch). The longest dry spell was 4 days with the showery rain spread over the month. The wettest day saw 8 mms (1/3 inch), but the rest were between 1 and 5 mms. The wettest July I have recorded was 2007 with 156 mms (6 inches) and the driest 2016 with just 10 mms (3/8th inch) Ricky Gibbs. Online and Virtual Church Services St John's Yeovil are still streaming their service at 10.30 am each Sunday morning, access is through their website www.sjyeovil.co.uk The BBC on Long Wave or DAB have a daily service at 9.45 am on weekdays. There is also a service every Sunday on Radio 4 at 8 am which I usually listen to before going to Church. I will not have to rush off for the near future although I will be in Church at 9.30 am on Sundays to offer worship on behalf of others and to pray for all. There is also a televised service on Sundays at 11.45 am - 12.15. “Thought for the Day” is at 7.50 am and Songs of Praise on BBC1 on Sunday afternoons. There are various apps for smart phones such as Common Worship Daily Prayer, Sacred Space and Pray As You Go, all of which can be downloaded from Google. If you go to the Church of England website www.churchofengland.org/ you can sign up for a daily hashtag Live Lent email, which will give you daily reading and reflection. Wells Cathedral will hopefully remain open for personal prayer and reflection, the lighting of candles and pastoral care. The Cathedral will also be live streaming. With every blessing Revd. Barbara

MARSTON MAGNA AND RIMPTON GARDENING CLUB

Due to the current COVID19 situation the committee of our Gardening Club have sadly taken the decision to cancel all meetings for the rest of this year, including the Annual Flower and Produce Show for 2020. We all feel that this is the safest option for all our members, guests, presenters and show judges and we plan to resume a full programme in 2021. All members who have paid their subscription of the year will have it carried forward to next year unless they specifically request a refund. Thank you all for your support of our club and we really look forward to meeting you again next year. Best regards David Cook

RIDE AND STRIDE

(Saturday 12th September 2020)

I had assumed this event was not taking place this

year, but I have just been informed that it is. I had

said I would retire after last year, but I will have one

more go. Last year was my twelfth ride in this event

and I cycled 86 miles and visited 54 Churches.

I have done very little cycling this year, so it’s going

to be a shorter ride. I hope to visit at least 20

Churches, maybe 25 if the legs are working well.

Any money raised goes wholly towards Church

maintenance and repair. Half goes to Rimpton

Church and half to the Somerset Churches Trust

general fund which makes grants for Church

maintenance in Somerset.

This is the 25th year this event has been held. The

SCT has to date raised £466,478 and hope to

reach £500,000 this year. If anyone would like to

support this cause, please contact myself, or John

and Brenda Spencer. Sponsorship may be on a

per Church basis or a fixed sum.

RIMPTON VILLAGE HALL REOPENING The Rimpton Village Hall Management Committee is pleased to announce that Rimpton Village Hall has now reopened, following the temporary closure during the Coronavirus pandemic. The

Hall is now available for use, for either regular bookings, or one-off events. The Hall is open subject to the requirements and guidelines necessary to make it “COVID Secure”. We have put things in place to allow this to happen, including sanitiser at the entrance doors and signage to remind users to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings. Hirers will have to follow the guidelines that apply generally to community buildings, as well as whatever guidelines apply to their specific activity. There are also restrictions on the numbers that can attend, depending on the type of event. More information, including details of what hirers must do, is available at: www.rimpton.net/village-hall/bookings/ or from the Bookings Secretary: Dale McLoughlin on 01935 851100 or [email protected]

MARSTON MAGNA VILLAGE SOCIAL Every Thursday from 10.30 am to 11.30 am Starting Thursday 3rd September Due to Covid-19, we are still unable to operate our Friday Café, but we will soon be able to open the village hall for a chance to get together and chat whilst social distancing. We are not able to offer refreshments but feel free to bring your own drinks/snacks/cups/flasks etc. We will be following stringent cleaning and social distancing measures to ensure everyone’s safety which means that we will have a one-way system in and out of the hall and will have to limit numbers. Depending on demand and the success of this, we hope in the future to once more be able to re-start the village café but for now, do come along and catch up with friends and neighbours. For more information, please contact anyone on the village hall committee. Kathryn Lawrence

from home. Now that meeting in the village hall is

allowed again, I can welcome you to a class. If you

feel you want to come along and try it out, or return

to enjoy seeing people again, do come along, you

News from your Village Agent Team Face Coverings: We are all getting to grips with remembering our face coverings when we go out and thought it might be useful to refresh people on where you must wear face coverings. Face coverings are now compulsory is a range of public places including shops, shopping centres, retail spaces and supermarkets, public transport, indoor transport hubs, banks, building societies, and post offices. The government has full details here: https://tinyurl.com/y7pd957e There are some people who are exempt from wearing face coverings including (but is not limited to): young children under the age of 11 (Public Health England do not recommend face coverings for children under the age of 3 for health and safety reasons) - not being able to put on, wear or remove a face covering because of a physical or mental illness or impairment, or disability - if putting on, wearing, or removing a face covering will cause you severe distress - if you are travelling with or providing assistance to someone who relies on lip reading to communicate - to avoid harm or injury, or the risk of harm or injury, to yourself or others

- to avoid injury, or to escape a risk of harm, and you do not have a face covering with you - to eat or drink if reasonably necessary - in order to take medication - if a police officer or other official requests you remove your face covering There are also scenarios when you are permitted to remove a face covering when asked - if asked to do so in a bank, building society, or post office for identification - if asked to do so by shop staff or relevant employees for identification, the purpose of assessing health recommendations, such as a pharmacist, or for age identification purposes including when buying age restricted products such as alcohol - if speaking with people who rely on lip reading, facial expressions, and clear sound. Some may ask you, either verbally or in writing, to remove a covering to help with communication If you fancy making one there are 4 great free patterns available on this website: https://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/5-free-diy-face-mask-tutorials-using-fabric Staying Connected: The pandemic has forced many of us to be creative in the way we stay connected with one another. Carers in particular may have found themselves more isolated and struggling as their usual support groups have stopped running. You can find connections with other people online, & you might be able to find a little respite in non-traditional ways, such as joining Facebook groups or online forums. This month’s Carers Newsletter found here: https://tinyurl.com/y3tkkgl3 and has lots of ideas of groups you could join – whether you are a carer or not! You may find a new way of virtually meeting people with shared hobbies and interests. Here is a few ideas to set yourself a little time aside for you: The Virtual Village Hall is a programme of themed online activities designed to enjoy at home by the Royal Voluntary Service. It can be tough to remember to drink enough so here is a few tips Make it social! Take time out to have a cup of tea Make sure drinks are available at mealtimes Set reminders on your phone to drink every hour 1.5 litres a day is what we each should be drinking - make a jug of water of that amount and keep in fridge - make sure it is gone by the end of the day! MILK BOTTLETOPS Can you all please remember to remove the foil pull caps from the tops, because the metal detector on Perry’s conveyor belt stop the machines. Also remember it is only plastic tops with a 2 or 4 in the recycling symbol that I can accept, all the rest go in my wheelie bin. There is a company called Massmould, who produce tops made from the same plastic as milk bottle tops e.g. Robinson’s squash, and Evian water, so from now on, I can accept any tops made by Massmoulds. Please do continue to save the bottle tops and as soon as the Café re-opens, we can start to gather them together. Thank you everyone. And keep safe Marion Dean, 13 West End, 01935 850032

Neighbourhood Network - don’t forget! As covered in previously a few of us villagers have got together to offer help to both MM and Rimpton villagers, as and when needed. As someone who has an 89 year old father on his own in Hertfordshire, I know he doesn’t always feel well enough, for example, to go food shopping, go to appointments, collect tablets, take his dustbin down the drive etc, but he always welcomes visitors for a chat and a cuppa. JP Garden birds … where are they?? I am writing this on 19th August, a rainy grey day, and all I can see is one greenfinch on our feeder, one crow and several jackdaws flying, and I can hear the coo of a Woodpigeon. What is happened to the others? If you do the Garden BirdWatch for the BTO (British Trust for Ornithology) you may have the same question. People who know more than I do tell me many of the common species are still in our gardens but are behaving differently. The breeding season is mainly over, and there is an abundance of wild insect food, making birds less dependent on bird feeders. Birds are also moulting, losing feathers,

10

so they can be slower and more vulnerable to predators. So, they are wary about spending time in the open, choosing to stay in close cover. In our garden this year we have seen our local Rimpton Sparrow hawk almost every day swooping fast round the side of the house, checking on our bird feeder and zooming off, with or without a small bird in its beak. No wonder the small birds are keeping in cover. In August more of the migrant breeders continue their return journey. Swifts are leaving for their winter homes south of the Sahara - so make the most of any remaining summer visitors you have, they will not be here much longer. House Martins are still with us, as they are late breeders, still sometimes feeding young into August. Although there has been a decline in number this year across the UK, we are fortunate to have a few still nesting in our villages. But in September they will go too. It always feels sad, a loss to us, when we realise the skies are empty of them – until next spring. Adult Cuckoos have already departed on their huge journey to southern Africa, and the remaining juveniles will soon follow. The BTO satellite-track a small number of Cuckoos each year, to find out why they are declining so much – over the last 20 years the UK has lost over half of our Cuckoos. As I write, the tracking project shows that one has crossed the Sahara already and is now in Mali. Take a look: https://www.bto.org/our-science/projects/cuckoo-tracking-project

Returning to our parishes – there are still many interesting things to see – Ricky from Rimpton spotted a small flock of Canada Geese grazing in a stubble field down Roe Lane last week. By the time he had walked back to the waterfall he heard a lot of honking - the whole flock had taken off, and gave a fly-pass, heading north. Keep an eye on our parish Nature Watch to see what others have spotted: https://www.facebook.com/groups/rimptonandmarstonmagnanaturewatch/ Or better still, post anything you’ve seen on the site for others to know about.

Message to Rimpton from the First

Responders team As you are aware due to Covid 19 the government have advised that we must keep to "Social Distancing", this instruction obviously impacts the role of first responders. As a result, we will not be able to carry out our normal call out procedure until advised otherwise. We will obviously inform you when the situation changes, until then please dial 999 in any emergency as your first course of action. The defibrillator situated in the Telephone box is available for personal use if needed and any of our first responders can be called for advice. SW
