THE RECTORY January 2021

Dear All First of all Happy New Year. Let us hope 2021 is a better one than 2020 and the virus is finally dealt with. Secondly, thank you for all the lovely Christmas Cards. I seem to have had even more than usual. I love looking at them and they make up for the loss of my Christmas Tree. This is making my new house, which I will retire to in March, look a little like home, having put it in the conservatory, and can be seen from the sitting room. I have visited the tiny Church in the village, which was open along with its loo, both plus points. Tangmere, near Chichester, has an Aviation Museum and the airfield was used in the Second World War. The church yard has sadly many war graves, both British and German and is beautifully kept. Returning to the recent, Christmas is very different but in spite of the restrictions, both Rimpton and Marston Magna had beautiful Carol Services. Rimpton Church Porch is worth a visit. The Church looked amazing in the candlelight with the Christmas tree in the Chancel. The music, both electronic and played on the organ by Stephen Suttle was wonderful. Marston Magna had the treat of the music being led Hugh Privett on the organ and by Kirk Hutton and her son Alex home from the Guildhall School of music and Drama. Music for reflection was Penka Petrova, and friend of Alex who played her cello. Next was Carol Singing by the Christmas tree on the Village Green. Hugh played his house organ which was amplified to the Green. I think about sixty people came. We had mulled wine in the interval. Long may this event continue. Six of us went on to Fir Villas including the Hutton’s so the Carol singing outside their conservatory sounded, I thought, quite professional. £110.62 was collected for the Children's Society. Rimpton went Carol Singing in socially distanced groups of six and collected for Somerset Mind. A chance for me to see all the decorations. Refreshments a little different this year with mulled wine and mince pies outside at the Le Hardy's. Thank you to all who have helped make Christmas 2020 one to remember with some pleasure. Christmas and Epiphany, which remembers the visit of the Magi to the Christ child on the Sunday nearest to the 6th January, do not end until the 2nd February with Candlemass, when Mary and Joseph took their new son to the Temple. There is lots of hope still in our COVID-19 dominated world. The last lesson of the Carol Services from the 1st Chapter of John's gospel tells us, “The one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth” is still there to guide and help us through this life and all its difficulties. Jesus is the light which will overcome the deepest darkness. Revd. Barbara 01935 850745 [email protected].

Letter from the Right Reverend Peter Hancock, Bishop of Bath & Wells

For Parish Newsletters – January 2021 January takes its name from the Roman god, Janus, who is usually depicted as having two faces, looking both to the future and the past. At the start of a New Year it is good to do the same. 2020 will sadly be remembered as the year disrupted by COVID-19. Cracks in our care for each other have been revealed and it has had a disproportionate effect on those already vulnerable or deprived. It showed us that those who are most essential to our needs, those who clean and serve and care, are often those valued least in our economy. However, we also saw extraordinary acts of kindness and compassion, as churches and communities worked together to provide comfort, support, and practical care. So, what of 2021? The temptation may be to forget what we have learnt, to paper over the cracks, ignore what has been uncomfortable and to seek comfort in the familiar. I hope we do not. 2020 opened our eyes to the harm caused when people are excluded on the basis of race, ability, gender, sexual orientation, or wealth. Jesus calls us to a better way. Jesus broke the bounds of exclusion, refusing to accept the social norms and speaking to Samaritans, women, Gentiles, tax collectors and sinners. He teaches that the first shall be last and the last first. He reconciles humanity to God through his death and resurrection. As we look forward to 2021, we need to think again what it means to follow Christ and to build our lives and communities based on mutual love, respect, and service. ‘For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.’ May we all know the Lord’s leading and guiding as we step out into a New Year. With my warmest greetings, + Bishop Peter THE RAIN REPORT November rainfall totalled 78 mms (3 inches) with

rain on 16 days spread out evenly across the

month. There were 2 very wet days with 18 and 20

mms (¾ inch) respectively. The other 14 wet days

had relatively low rainfall but enough to stop the

mud in the fields from drying out.

My records now go back 30 years and in that time

October and November have competed for the

highest monthly average rainfall. November was

leading after 2019, but following a very wet

October, it has taken over as leader with an

average of 97.8 mms (3 ¾ inch) with November a

short head behind on 97.1 mms.

Ricky Gibbs. Rimpton neighbourhood network You may remember the wonderful community support which people offered in the first lockdown – between us we produced a leaflet of no less than 30 names of people in Rimpton who were happy to do all manner of things including shop, fetch things, walk dogs or just be on the end of the phone. We had wondered whether to revise that list for Lockdown 2, but felt it was not necessary as there is such good neighbourly support. We hope that is the case, and that people are OK. But even though this formal lockdown is coming to an end, many of us may not feel happy with ‘normal’ interaction for some time yet, until the vaccine is well underway. There may be need for help and support for some time to come. So we wanted to say that the original leaflet is still almost- accurate - maybe you have the original copy, or if not we can pop round with another, or we’ve put several at the book-swap at the Village Hall. Please help yourself. We are sure most people on the list are still happy to be contacted if there’s need. And if there’s ever a situation when people don’t know where to turn, Penny and I are two of many people who are happy to be on the end of a phone as ‘first stop’ contacts, and can pass on any requests wherever. And a message from Penny – “Don't forget to decorate a window from December 5th, and please let me know if you would like to include your house on a list for an evening walk, to enjoy the lights!". MARSTON MAGNA AND RIMPTON GARDENING CLUB

The uncertain COVID19 situation continues and the committee of our Gardening Club are, as yet, unable to plan the programme of events for 2021. However we do intend to have the Annual Flower and Produce Show in September and as soon as we are able to, we will publish dates of this and other events we are able to organise. We wish you all a healthy and happier New Year. Marston Magna & Rimpton Gardening Club Committee RIMPTON VILLAGE HALL REOPENING The Rimpton Village Hall Management Committee is pleased to announce that Rimpton Village Hall has now reopened, following the temporary closure during the Coronavirus pandemic. The Hall is now available for use, for either regular bookings, or one-off events. The Hall is open subject to the requirements and guidelines necessary to make it “COVID Secure”. We have put things in place to allow this to happen, including sanitiser at the entrance doors and signage to remind users to maintain social distancing and wear face coverings. Hirers will have to follow the guidelines that apply generally to community buildings, as well as whatever guidelines apply to their specific activity. There are also restrictions on the numbers that can attend, depending on the type of event. More information, including details of what hirers must do, is available at: www.rimpton.net/village-hall/bookings/ or from the Bookings Secretary: Dale McLoughlin on 01935 851100 or [email protected]

Somerset remains in Tier 2, High Alert Somerset is to remain in Tier 2 for the time being, the government has confirmed. It has reviewed the three-tier structure and decided that because of our circumstances – including the number of confirmed coronavirus cases, the demographic of those case numbers and pressure on NHS services – we will stay in Tier 2 until the next review at the end of the year. This means that everyone must continue to: Not mix with other households indoors Stick to the rule of six outdoors Work from home if possible Reduce the number of journeys we make Pubs and restaurants must shut at 11.00pm, and only serve alcohol with a substantial meal. Spectators are allowed at sports events and live performances, but in limited numbers. Personal care businesses, including hairdressers, can remain open if they follow COVID-secure guidance.

MILK BOTTLETOPS

Can you all please remember to remove the foil pull caps from the tops, because the metal detector on Perry’s conveyor belt stop the machines. Also remember it is only plastic tops with a 2 or 4 in the recycling symbol that I can accept, all the rest go in my wheelie bin. There is a company called Massmould, who produce tops made from the same plastic as milk bottle tops e.g. Robinson’s squash, and Evian water, so from now on, I can accept any tops made by Massmoulds. Please do continue to save the bottle tops and as soon as the Café re-opens, which hopefully will be soon, we can start to gather them together. Thank you everyone. And keep safe Marion Dean, 13 West End, 01935 850032

Caring for those in care With a background in supporting older people is it no surprise, with the challenges of 2020, that Steph Packham has felt called back to support them. Following a chat with the Revd. Selina Garner in the summer, at which she shared her feelings, she was encouraged to undertake the diocesan Exploring Chaplaincy course and was appointed as Chaplain to the Elderly for St John’s Church, Wellington. Steph, who has worked as an activity co-ordinator for the elderly and as the national lead for activities at Bupa Care Homes says, “The healthcare available in care homes is amazing and activity provision is very much on the agenda, but I have felt for some time that spirituality in care homes could be developed. Whilst everyone in a Care Home plays their part in the spiritual health of the residents, having a Chaplain dedicated to this, working alongside a team of pastoral companions, could make such a difference.” Current restrictions mean Steph cannot visit them yet, but she was able to involve all six of the area’s care homes in the Wellington Team’s ‘Angels of Hope ’community project. She says, “It was a great way to introduce myself to them and all have been so keen to be involved. Steph and a team of church, school, community, and Duke of Edinburgh volunteers have made over 600 angel gift bags for every care home resident. Steph hopes she will inspire others to become Chaplains to the Elderly across Somerset. For more information email [email protected].

Decorations: Winter foliage, paper and card are the perfect substitutes for plastic, as is a real tree unless your artificial one lasts for many years. Gifts: Keep a lid on the cardboard by thinking outside the box when shopping online – vouchers, digital subscriptions and memberships make great gifts and no packaging. Shop local, ask for wish lists, invest in presents of real quality that last - or give a free but priceless gift of time, with promises to help with all that 2021 will bring, from decluttering to gardening. Wrap: Use paper wrapping. Glitter, plastic, or metallic wrapping cannot be recycled so will need to go straight into the rubbish. Reuse wrapping if you can or put it in the correct kerbside recycling box. Got lots? Take it all to one of our 16 recycling sites. Each will have a special drop-off point just for wrapping paper. Tree: Compost your real Christmas tree at home or add it to your garden's wildlife corner. If you subscribe to the garden waste service, leave the tree next to your green bin for collection. Not a subscriber? Decoration-free trees must be taken to a recycling site; they will not be collected from the kerbside. BTW: There are no garden waste collections Friday 25 December - Friday 8 January (inclusive). Friday 8 January collections will be a day later; garden waste pick-ups restart from Monday 11 January. Recycling sites: These are on winter hours, except all close as usual on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. They are a good way to dispose of large loads, especially if weather delays collections. Be sure to socially distance and follow all other safety guidance. Empty cardboard boxes of plastic and other packaging, then flatten them before you come. Collections: Recycling and rubbish collection days change over Christmas. Check your days using My Collection Day at somersetwaste.gov.uk or contact your council customer services.

Startling starlings!

We wondered last month whether the starlings had

deserted us this year.

But no problem!! Even though their numbers are

declining, they are still very much with us.

On the darkest day of the year, we visited the RSPB

reserve at Ham Wall on the Levels. We watched

the late sun lighting up in gold the reed beds; heard

the sound the wild soft call of thousands of newly

arrived lapwings (‘pee-wit pee-wit’) attracted by the

slightly higher water levels; and we sat until dusk in

a hide overlooking all manner of water birds as they

prepared to roost for the night.

And then as we made our way in the growing

darkness back to the car park … a small – socially

distanced – crowd ahead of us were pointing

skywards … and from the west the sky was filled not

with angels, but with kaleidoscopes of swirling,

ever-changing, birds – thousands of them, starlings,

tiny dark shapes against the pale sky, on their way

to roost in the reed beds. What a sight.

Starlings can sometimes seem the vagabonds of

the bird world, raucous, noisy, awkward as they

walk, with their dark forbidding eye-stripe like scary

bandits. But recently one landed on our bird table

and I saw it close-up – I saw the iridescent indigo

and green plumage, glossy, startling! And in flight,

in their thousands, their aerial acrobatics is

stunning.

During the winter, our starling numbers are boosted

by species from Europe. Some Asian starlings are

known as mynahs, which have an extraordinary

9

range of noises, croaks, clicks and whistles. ‘Our’

starlings can also sometime mimic other birds.

Some African species are known as glossy starlings

because of their iridescent plumage. European

starlings have recently declined in numbers – an 80

per cent population decrease between 1987 and

2012, thought to be linked to reduced feeding

opportunities because of changing land use

practices.

A starling ‘murmuration’ is one of the greatest British

wildlife experiences – and we’re fortunate to have

one of Britain’s largest roosts just 40 minutes from

us at RSPB Ham Wall, or Shapwick Heath. The

flocks gather at dusk, and wheel around the sky in

their ever-changing cloud-shapes before dropping

to their roost sites. How so many birds flying

together avoid mid-air collisions has been the

subject of research - the BBC site

‘discoverwildlife.com’ gives interesting facts -

apparently each starling constantly monitors the

trajectories of about six or seven of its nearest

neighbours, while also making adjustments so that

it can still see patches of sky. It must always be able

to gather vital information about its surroundings.

All entirely instinctive!

Many people make an annual visit to see them – but

if you haven’t seen them yet, do go. But perhaps

not at weekends as it can get crowded! January is

a good month to see them.

Marston Magna Traffic – Your help is needed please

The great news is that our new Speed Indicator Device is working. From the data collected there has been an almost ten percent drop in average speed in vehicles entering our village from the North comparing the figures from the first week of installation to the fourth week. Unfortunately, at the time of writing we are still waiting for SSDC to agree additional sites for the SID for traffic entering from the South, Little Marston Road and Rimpton Road. Frustratingly, the wheels turn very slowly (unlike the traffic) and a combination of Covid and Christmas has pretty much brought them to halt. Your Parish Council continues to encourage them. Our new Neighbourhood Speed Watch scheme is also progressing albeit slowly too, sites have now been verbally agreed with the police on Camel Street, Little Marston Road and at the Village Hall and are being risk assessed. (We also requested a site on Rimpton Road, but the police deemed it

10

unnecessary, this is disappointing, but they did agree to re-assess in 2021). We are now asking for volunteers to help collect the registration numbers of the worst offenders. These will then be forwarded to the police who will send warning letters. There will be a requirement for some training and a regular commitment of time but if you are interested in helping please contact me on 07770 454046. Thank you Howard Butterfield – Parish Councillor

Marston Magna Village Hall Management Committee

Unfortunately, the Village Hall is mainly closed, but Steph’s Aerobic exercises are operating on Monday mornings. Please take care everyone. The AGM scheduled for 18th January 2021 at 19.00 will not take place, as Covid restrictions will not allow. We will meet as soon as we can when safe. In the meantime I am looking for people to join the committee to help run this really important asset within our community.
