Since 1964, Fly Fishers International has been an organized voice for fly fishers. We represent all aspects of fly fishing – from the art of fly tying and casting instruction, to the protection of and access to fisheries around the world. A 501c3 non-profit organization formally known as The International Federation of Fly Fishers, FFI is driven by three fundamental pillars: Conservation, Education, and Community. Together, these pillars provide the foundation for our vision of the future of fly fishing — a future in which anglers have access to prime waters and fish can thrive in healthy, protected habitats; in which learning never stops and artistry is not forgotten; and that recognizes the true value of camaraderie. 10 Flies and Lies
September of the Month By Jerry Coviello
FMD (Flower Magic Dragon) AKA as Puff the Magic Dragon Hook: 2XL Nymph Hook size 6 to 10 Thread: 6/0 Brown Abdomen: Olive/Brown marabou (Stacked around hook shank and trimmed in a triangle shape Legs: Optional Sili Legs Wingcase: Brown Swiss Straw Thorax: Olive/Brown Dubbing Eyes: Medium Mono Dumbbell eyes Originator - Andrew Fowler The FMD will be showcased in the Fall/Winter edition of FlyFisher Magazine. Fly of the Month is created by Fly Fishers International Fly Tying Group website https://flyfishersinternational.org/Tying/Educational-Resources/Fly-of-the-Month
11 Flies and Lies
Step 1
Secure the hook in the vise and
tie in your thread behind the eye
and wrap your thread to the
bend of the hook.
Step 2
Cut marabou fibers and tie them on the shank of the hook
Step 3 Wrap the marabou butt fibers back over the tips as shown.
12 Flies and Lies
Step 4 Continue stacking the marabou fibers around the shank of the hook.
Step 5 Fill up three quarters of the hook shank with the marabou fibers
Step 6 Trim the marabou body in the shape of a triangle. Cut the bottom flat. When wet the abdomen will be the shape of the dragonfly nymph abdomen
13 Flies and Lies
Step 7 Tie in Medium Black plastic dumbbell eyes. Glue them onto the hook shank
Step 8
Tie in the Swiss Straw wing case and wing pad. You can use turkey tail in place of the Swiss Straw.
Step 9 Take the Swiss Straw and fold it over the wing pad. Tie in the first section of the rubber legs on each side of the hook shank
14 Flies and Lies
Step 10 Take dubbing fur and wrap the thorax. Then add the second rubber legs behind the eyes and dub over them and cross over the eyes with the dubbing fur. (I am using peacock ice dubbing for the thorax)
Step 11
Pull the Swiss Straw wing case over the thorax and secure the Swiss Straw behind the eye. Whip finish and add a drop of head cement or Solarez UV Bone Dry for the head.
Dragonfly nymphs make great food for trout, and warm water species such as bluegills, perch, and bass. Popular colors are Olive, Tan and Brown. When you cast these flies you want them to sink, using either a floating line with a sink tip or weight on your leader. You should retrieve in short four- to six-inch bursts using a slow hand twist retrieve; remember they are like a jet propulsion when they swim
