Award for Better Beginnings

The State Library's popular and evidence-based early literacy

program, Better Beginnings, has been awarded a prestigious

'Best Practice Honoree' in the 2017 US Library of Congress

Literacy Awards.

The Better Beginnings program commenced in 2004 and since

then has provided 550,000 Western Australian families with

developmentally appropriate books, resources and access to

Rhyme Time and Story Time sessions at their local libraries.

The State Library would like to thank Rio Tinto, public libraries

and community child health nurses for helping to deliver this

program.

Literacy Strategy

In July the State Library's Literacy Strategy was launched by the Minster for Culture and the Arts, Hon. David

Templeman MLA. The ten year plan aims to meet the Library’s promise for all Western Australians to have

the literacy they need for living and learning. Literacy Matters: State Library of Western Australia Literacy

Strategy 2017-2027 is available to view here.
