slwa.wa.gov.au 2017 is a year to reimagine your story. In this final quarter of the year the State Library will share stories that have evolved from its collection of non-print materials. The Library has thousands of metres, hours and minutes of recorded oral histories and movies which are explored in the First Wednesday (Family History) and Last Wednesday (Aboriginal Family History) Talks and Tours of the J.S. Battye Library of West Australian History. The Western Australian New Music Archive is a collection of digital artefacts which captures the history of the production and performance of Western Australian new music from the 1970’s to the present. This collection inspired the story of “Alternative Frequencies: 40 Years of RTRFM” running from November to February in the Ground Floor Gallery. Recordings of birdsongs, paired with scientific illustrations, provide a sensory experience and insight into the use of electronics with images in Bird Song in The Story Place Gallery from November to January. The Library continues its celebration of children’s literature hosting a pounce of activities celebrating The Life and Times of Scarface Claw, the toughest Tom in town. Author Dame Lynley Dodd will visit the Library in October for the Awesome Festival for Bright Young Things. Discover a rich narrative in words, pictures, sound and moving images. Acknowledgement

In all of the ways the State Library of Western Australia showcases the stories of Western Australia, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Culture is acknowledged as the oldest living continuous culture. The State Library respects the traditional custodians of that culture past, present and future. The State Library’s vision is to be one of the world’s great libraries. To do this we will build, preserve and showcase physical and digital collections that reflect our rich Western Australian heritage and the many facets of our history.
