The female will lay one egg every three days, but only when there is about 9 hours daylight. When the days get longer she stops laying.

The dark green eggs weigh about 500-700 grams

It is the male who collects the eggs in one spot by rolling them along the ground. He covers them until he has 7-10 eggs.

The male will sit on the eggs until they hatch. It will take 54-60 days. He does not eat and hardly drinks while on the eggs.

The male will look after the emu chicks until they are about one year old.

Emus live up to 25 years.
