Meet Our New Executive Director, Josh Bender How long have you been a Jewish Communal Professional? I’ve been in the Jewish Communal Service field for about 20 years in several different leadership capacities including the JCC, the Jewish Camping world, the synagogue world, the Hillel world, and most recently, the Jewish Day School world. I am very excited to be returning to synagogue leadership and to be joining the vibrant and warm community that is Beth El. Why did you decide to come to Beth El? I have always had a deep appreciation of Beth El. I had the opportunity the last two years to do song leading for Beth El on the High Holidays and on Shabbat. My family and I fell in love with the community. I also spent many years during my career working in synagogues and it has always been so rewarding and gratifying to serve in a synagogue leadership role. What are you most looking forward to in your new role? The role of the Executive Director in a synagogue like Beth El is so multi-faceted. Every day is different. The work is challenging, yet extremely rewarding. As the Executive Director, I have the opportunity to work closely with our congregants and our outstanding clergy and staff to support the incredibly important and holy work that we do at Beth El of creating connections, community, and supporting our members through times of joy and sadness. Tell us about yourself. I am a dad of three boys, Noah, Jacob, and Ethan. Much of my life right now when I’m not working is encompassed with baseball, hiking, fishing, and chasing after three very active boys. I love to read in my free time—when I have free time! I play the guitar—I’ve been playing the guitar and song-leading for many years. I love Jewish music, as well as folk music in general. In the last five years, I have developed a love for gardening and I enjoy carpentry and working with tools. My wife Julie is a social worker who has worked in hospitals as a Pediatric Social Worker, and has also worked for non-profits. Are there any mottos, quotes or values that you live by. If so, what are they? One of my favorite quotes is from Martin Luther King, Jr., who said: “Life’s most persistent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’” How would you describe yourself? I enjoy working with teams and collaboration. I like to hear many perspectives even when they are different from mine. I think my colleagues in previous jobs would describe me as a good listener and a reflective leader who can successfully address the day to day operations of an organization while keeping an eye on the “big picture.” What have you learned from your previous positions that will help you succeed in this role? Another favorite quote of mine from Jewish tradition (Pirkei Avot) is “Who is wise? One who learns from everybody.” One of the most important lessons that I have learned over the years working as a Jewish communal professional is that everyone, no matter who he/she is, deserves to be heard, to be respected, and everyone has a story to tell. Meet Our New Executive Director, Josh BenderHow long have you been a Jewish Communal Professional?

play the guitar—I’ve been playing the guitar and song-leading for many years.

One of my favorite quotes is from Martin Luther King, Jr., who said: “Life’s most persistent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”

How would you describe yourself?

I enjoy working with teams and collaboration. I like to hear many perspectives even when they are different from mine. I think my colleagues in previous jobs would describe me as a good listener and a reflective leader who can successfully address the day to day operations of an organization while keeping an eye on the “big picture.”

What have you learned from your previous positions that will help you succeed in this role?

Another favorite quote of mine from Jewish tradition (Pirkei Avot) is “Who is wise? One who learns from everybody.” One of the most important lessons that I have learned over the years working as a Jewish communal professional is that everyone, no matter who he/she is, deserves to be heard, to

be respected, and everyone has a story to tell.

Participate in this Year’s Annual AppealBy Rabbi Steven Schwartz

The High Holy Days call us to reflect on the things that are most important in our lives. As we listen to the sacred melodies and ancient words of the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services we think of family and friends, of parents and grandparents, of those with whom we have shared the journey of our years. We recall the past, we sense how quickly the time goes by, and we thank God for the gift of another year. The piercing sound of the shofar reminds us of our very best selves, of the innate capacity for goodness that God has given to each of us, speaking to our hearts and our souls and reminding us of our sacred heritage.

In Jewish life, these ideals are lived in the context of community. We come together to mourn our losses and to celebrate our blessings, to pray and to study, and to work to bring goodness and God’s presence into the world. The synagogue becomes the focal point of Jewish life, the place where Jews join together in common purpose, celebrating our history and affirming the age-old covenant between God and Israel. It is in the synagogue where a child learns his or her first Hebrew words, reads from the Torah on the occasion of bar or bat mitzvah, and one day stands under the huppah. It is in the synagogue where a grief stricken member can come to recite the words of the kaddish and to find comfort in

the caring warmth of others who have walked that path. And it is in the synagogue where we search for God’s presence in our lives, and where we know others are also searching. To embark on that search alone is daunting and difficult at best. But to do it in the midst of a sacred community, in the בית מדרש—the House of Study—and the בית כנסת—the House of Worship—is an opportunity to engage the sacred and to find a deeper meaning in life.

But as the Sages teach us, without material resources, we cannot do our work, and we cannot create the kind of sacred community that we know Beth El to be. Each year

when the holidays arrive we ask for your help. Please participate in this year’s Annual Appeal! Your donation enables young members to receive a proper Hebrew education and helps older members who might need dues assistance. Your participation in the Annual Appeal also is an affirmation of the power of community and the importance of the synagogue in Jewish life. Thank you for your caring and your help, and may we all be blessed with a sweet and healthy 5777.

6 The Voice of Beth El Congregation

It can be seen, or maybe even more so, sensed, in the barely noticeable details: the books resting on shelves, spines worn and tired from restless hands pressing their pages. Some have bookmarks where the reading stopped, others highlighted sentences that were read again and again preparing for some test. There are ticket stubs carefully tucked into the seams of a mirror, each one representing a new adventure, exciting moments shared with friends that gradually settle into a vast collection of past experiences. Pictures of those friends and of family lie everywhere, on dresser tops and the bedside table, on the desk and a chair. Each one tells the tale of time’s passage. Here she was an eager and smiling 3rd grader, suddenly there beginning high school, and just next to it a photo of her graduation. A family wedding, a first boyfriend, a best friend, siblings and cousins and travels, even parents! A picture board story, randomly organized, but conveying love and life, tears and laughter, things both bitter and sweet and everything in between.

Of course there are beloved stuffed animals, gently resting in place as they have now for years, patiently waiting for a living presence to return to their cozy dwelling. Somehow these loyal companions are now twenty years old, some older! They have weathered over the years, collecting dust and memories, representing time gone by. Some have names, others toil in obscurity, some faithfully comforting and snuggling, others tasked with simply watching events unfold, that age-old job of witness.

Do not forget the bulletin board. Classic cork, heavy with hand written notes, with stickers and birthday cards and beads and even a feather is there, light and delicate, gently moving when the window opens to the world outside. Proud accomplishments are quietly displayed, reminders of past successes. Who knows what strict criteria must be met in order for an item to find its way to that board? It stands as a visual narrative of past events, of highlights and sweet memories that will forever be infused with the hope and heartache of youth.

These days the room is occupied less and less. High school graduation was followed by travel, then college

in a distant northern town. Summer jobs away at camp, visiting with friends in the big city, the incredible hustle and bustle of a busy young life. Before long she’ll have another home, another room where new pictures will accumulate, where a strangely

empty bulletin board will hang, ’til it also begins to fill with memories. But the old room will always exist, permanently engraved on heart and mind, its tapestry of the past informing the future, the starry nights and sunrises yet to be seen, the winter storms and warm springs that lie ahead.

HonoringMalcolm and Sandra Bermanas we rededicate the Berman-Rubin Sanctuary

Aliyah HonorsLauren EsakoffLauren is a bright light at Beth El, bringing her wisdom, kindness, generosity, and deep interest in Jewish life to her service to the synagogue. A member of the Board of Directors and involved with a variety of committees, Lauren’s spirit and smile have enhanced congregational life in many different ways, from the school to the shul. Her devotion and dedication to Beth El have helped us become a stronger and more sacred community, and we feel honored to have the chance to thank her for all she has done. At the very same time, we look forward to what the future holds for Lauren, her daughter Eliana, and Beth El. She is a devoted mother, daughter, congregant and friend. Whenever anyone needs anything, Lauren is there.

Stanley RutkoStanley is a member of our ‘minionaires,’ those members who come to Beth El each and every morning as part of our daily prayer service. With his warm heart, kind smile, and powerful connection to the synagogue, Stan is the paradigmatic mensch. Over the years he has helped others to grow Jewishly and to feel the sense of caring and community that is Beth El at its very best. The synagogue, in turn, is without question Stanley’s home away from home, a place where he has celebrated life’s blessings and mourned the loss of his beloved wife Shirley of blessed memory. When Stanley helps to conduct Friday morning services he lifts the entire minyan with his clear love of our tradition and profound respect for God. Simply put, Beth El would not be the congregation it is without Stanley’s presence in our midst.

Simchat Torah

Simchat Torah CelebrationsJoin us Monday evening, October 24, for Hakafot, dancing with the Torahs, music, drinks, and snacks. Weather permitting; we will take our Simchat Torah celebration outside the circle at the front of Beth El. The joyous spirit of celebration and gratitude that marks this holiday and the conclusion of the fall holiday cycle is not to be missed! Activities, including a scavenger hunt, and a light dinner for preschool and young families will begin at 6:00 p.m., followed by the congregational celebration at 7:00 p.m.

The festive celebration continues Tuesday morning, October 25, at 10:00 a.m. with Simchat Torah morning services. We will complete the annual Torah reading cycle, begin the cycle that will carry us through the next year, and honor Lauren Esakoff and Stanley Rutko for the special ways in which they make the Beth El community more caring and connected.

Jewish Theological Seminary

We look forward to a very successful season in supporting our future rabbis, cantors, teachers, and administrators who attend the Jewish Theological Seminary.

Pictured above is this year’s benefactor’s pin for the Torah fund which supports the Jewish Theological Seminary. This year’s theme is P’ri yadehah, which means the fruit of her hands. It is a phrase from the beloved Eishet Chayil prayer, taken from the Book of Proverbs (31:31).

We envision this prayer today with appreciation for the hard-working, generous, and family-oriented woman whose work is to create a better world.

Rosh Hashanah & Yom KippurBeth El Seniors wish all of its members and the entire synagogue family a very happy and healthy 5777. May this be the year that we all find peace in the world.

MembershipBeth El Seniors is always welcoming new members 50 years of age or older to join our active organization. Dues are only $18 per person/$36 for a couple for a year. Each of our dinner meetings include enjoyable entertainment for a price of $21 per member. Where else can you get such a deal? Contact Marcia Friedlander at 443-352-8233 for a membership application.

Torah Maintenance CardsA project of the Beth El Seniors is to support the care and repair of our synagogue’s Torahs and Megillot. A kosher, usable Torah must be written by hand with a pen and special ink by a learned scribe. Every letter must be perfectly formed and every word must be correctly spelled. The ink cannot be chipped off even a little bit. The parchment on which the Torah is written must be flawless. The slightest tear or smudge will render the Torah unfit for use. The Beth El Torahs are regularly inspected and repaired. This is a costly process. It is a mitzvah to contribute to a process that keeps our sacred scrolls preserved for future generations.

Torah Maintenance Cards may be purchased at the Beth El front office or contact Dorothy Fineblum at 410-653-2631. These all-purpose cards are six for $10.00 or $2.00 each.

SeniorsBeth El

The Social Action Committee has been quiet during the summer. A small group including Rabbi Schwartz and Rabbi Saroken paid a visit to Beth El members who are residents at Springhouse in July. A good time was had by all. Another small group visited Hope Lodge for the Annual Fourth of July Barbeque. More than forty guests attended this event. A special note of thanks goes to Danny Neuman who did the hot work of tending the grill.

On Sunday, October 30, from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., we will have a group of volunteers working in the kitchen at Moveable Feast. We need your help.

Please contact Jeanette Davis at 410-484-2960 or [email protected] to sign up to participate in this activity.

The Social Action Committee is always ready to welcome new members to participate in our many activities. Contact Ellen Budish at 443-857-7499 or [email protected] to join the Social Action Committee.

Infant/Toddler UpdateThe Infant Toddler wing is open and bursting with excitement. We currently have 50 infants and toddlers enrolled in our program. This is double what we had two years ago. We are opening a new baby room in September, another one in October, and we are almost full for our February 2017 baby room. The success of our program is due to the excellent care our Infant/Toddler developmental specialists provide for the children and their families. We appreciate and value the dedication of our staff.

Beth El @ Federal Hill UpdateWe are excited to let everyone know that Federal Hill has reached it maximum capacity of 32 children. This is an amazing accomplishment as we opened last year with eight children and grew to 12 throughout the year. Our students join together for two years studying Israeli history and leadership skills that are used every day, both in the Jewish and secular communities. Achshav begins in 8th grade and continues till the end of 10th grade. The Israel Mission for Achshav participants is also heavily subsidized. If you have an 8th grader who would like to join our current Achshav cohort, please be in touch with Rabbi Faith Cantor at 410-484-4543.

School News

Neighborhood Schools NewsBy Amy Goldberg

My name is Amy Goldberg and I am the new Director of Neighborhood Schools. I am thrilled to join the professional team and congregational family at Beth El. My husband Ben and I live in Towson and look forward to welcoming our first child in December. I have dual Master’s degrees in Jewish Education and Jewish Communal Service from Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University. Before joining Beth El, I worked for five years in Jewish Teen Engagement and Leadership. I look forward to continue meeting families at Beth El and the Neighborhood Schools. Please stop by my office in the religious school wing to introduce yourself (I always keep candy on my desk ).

My educational philosophy is based on the following quote from Benjamin Franklin, “TELL me and I forget, TEACH me and I remember, INVOLVE me and I learn.” I believe that students learn best by actively engaging in their classroom experiences; learning should be meaningful and relevant. The Neighborhood Schools with the motto “Fun, Individualized, Hands-On, Creative, and Multi-Sensory” provide just that type of environment. Each location has an experienced educator who gets to know each student’s individualized needs and leads the class in learning through multi-sensory activities with themes related to Jewish holidays, values, and Torah. Students ages 4-13 are welcome to participate in Neighborhood Schools; those in 2nd-6th grades are encouraged to attend Beth El on Sundays to complement the weekday program.

Currently there are six locations throughout Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County. Classes are held in a law firm, a private school, public schools and a church. In two of the locations, we offer pick-up service from students’ schools to class. Beth El’s Neighborhood Schools are a unique program that offers Hebrew and Judaic content in a small environment that builds community and fosters Jewish learning in a location that is convenient for you.

We have on-going enrollment in the following locations: Baltimore City—Federal Hill, Roland Park and the Jewish Museum of Maryland, Baltimore County—Hunt Valley, and Howard County. For more information about one of these locations or to register, please contact me at [email protected] or 410-484-4543.

NEW Neighborhood School at JMMThis year, Beth El’s Neighborhood Schools is pleased to announce a new partnership with the Jewish Museum of Maryland as we opened a new school location in their space. This partnership further allows the Neighborhood Schools program to meet our goals of hands-on, engaging education by utilizing the space and resources at the JMM. We look forward to building lessons that bring together Jewish history and culture with the archives, library and the temporary and permanent museum exhibits.

If you are interested in learning more about the Neighborhood School at the Jewish Museum of Maryland, please contact Amy Goldberg at [email protected] or 410-484-4543.

Youth Engagement at Beth ElThis year, Beth El and its leadership are making it a high priority to ignite youth engagement and provide informal social opportunities for youth of all ages. We are hoping to create opportunities for students to have fun and engage as Jews at the synagogue, as well as outside of the formal classroom setting. Youth are the future of the Jewish community and their investment in the synagogue is crucial.

Here are just a few activities that are being planned for this year:

• Chuggim (elective) Programs for 2nd-5th Graders on Sunday after religious school: Self- Defense Class taught by Masada Tactical, Israeli Zumba, and an Art Class

• Junior Youth Group for 6th-7th Graders that will include informal social opportunities to hang out with friends, celebrate holidays, and have fun.

If you would like to learn more about these programs, please reach out to Amy Goldberg at [email protected] or 410-484-4543.
