Dear Brother Alumnus,

A lot has been going on these past months here at Farrell. The current issue of our newsletter tells you some of the many things that have happened – and there’s more to come because there is too much to relate in one issue!

Cardinal Dolan believes in Msgr. Farrell. In these difficult economic times, he has invested $6.2 million is long overdue repairs to our building. It was a long summer of hard work, but well worth it as we have new roofs, new north and south walls, proper insulation and waterproofing in the classrooms (there was no insulation or waterproofing at all!) along with double pane energy efficient windows. There are still a few roofs to finish next summer (administration wing, library, and chapel) along with several remaining classrooms, but the bulk of the work is done. For the first time in over fifty years the roofs do not leak and we’re looking forward to warm classrooms this winter. Our oil bills were running up to $25 thousand per month last winter due to the poor insulation, so this will be a welcome change.

In this issue, you will read about our three Posse Foundation Scholarship winners from the Class of 2014. We are very proud of Sedomo, Nick, and John as Farrell earned an unprecedented number of these prestigious scholarships this year. Each of these young men is exemplary of the Vir Fidelis tradition and – thank God – we’ve got many more like them in our classrooms.

This is all due to your dedication and loyalty to Farrell – thank you! This issue contains the remarkable generosity of our donors this year. I join our students in expressing our deep gratitude. Without your continued support and encouragement, we cannot continue to fulfill Msgr. Farrell’s dream of providing the best in Catholic education to the bright and promising young men who come to us.

Know that you and your family remain in my prayers as I thank God for those who make it possible for us to form the Farrell Men of today and tomorrow.

Sincerely,

(Rev. Msgr.) Edmund J. Whalen, S.T.D., ‘76Principal

Sean is attending The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, one of the top ranked business schools in the United States.

As a student at Farrell, Sean received national recognition for starting the student group Hearing Our Heroes. He has been named one of America’s top 10 youth volunteers of 2014 by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, and received President George H.W. Bush’s Points of Light Award.

Rich earned a scholarship to the University of Michigan, where he is a member of the Wolverines wrestling team.

In addition to being ranked the #13 220-pound wrestler in the country in high school, Rich was an honor student at Farrell and a U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar-Athlete.

The University of Michigan is ranked #14 nationally in wrestling (pre-season) and #28 in the country for academics.

THREE MEMBERS OF THE CLASS OF 2014 received the prestigious POSSE Scholarship. Three scholarships in one year is a rarity in any school, and a first here at Farrell. The Posse Foundation identifies high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential.

These are full academic scholarships to three of the top colleges and universities in the nation:

Vanderbilt University (Nick Lazzara), The University of Wisconsin at Madison (John LaPiedra), and Lafayette College (Sedomo Agosa).

All three alumni are looking forward to a career in medicine, so it is evident that Farrell is doing an excellent job preparing our students for STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) careers.

After the notifications came in, our future physicians had a long conversation with Farrell Principal Monsignor Whalen about what this life-changing opportunity means for them. All three said this would not have happened if they had not come to Farrell.

“Don’t worry Monsignor, we will remember what Farrell taught us. We will take care of people who need our help. We’ll pay back.”

Building champions

“I’m really honored, especially knowing the three previous winners are Farrell guys — I’m happy to keep the tradition going,” said Lazzara, who will major in Medicine, Health and Society at Vanderbilt University in the fall with an eye toward attending med school.

“It’s just a great feeling.”

The 5-foot-9, 200-pound Lazzara, a linebacker and kicker for the Lions last fall, has a fine array of scholar-athlete honors, including being a

member of the 2013 New York State Scholar Football team; The CHSFL’s Monsignor Peters Scholar Athlete Award; the Lt. Nick Lia Scholar Athlete Award and the Jon Benedetto Memorial Football Scholarship Award for pride, commitment, dedication and leadership.

In addition to solid play at linebacker, Lazzara also kicked a 25-yard field goal to defeat Iona Prep in overtime last season.

“I really believe the lessons of discipline, hard work and

focus I learned on the football field played a big role in what I did in the classroom,” said the 18-year-old Lazzara.

Nick also received the award for Second in Merit in Chemistry, The Brother Bradley Memorial Award for Outstanding Scholar-Athelte, the Congressman Michael Grimm Civic Leadership Award, and the Monsignor Farrell High School Service Award at this year’s commencement ceremony.

recently graduated George Mason University with a degree in Government and International Politics. Recently, I spent a semester abroad in Florence, Italy and I am currently in my first year at Brooklyn School of Law. Many of my successes in college I attribute to the education that I received at Monsignor Farrell.

For many people, going away to college can be a little intimidating at first, but Farrell men have a leg up on the competition. A.P Political Science, with Farrell’s Mr. Manganel, certainly prepared me well for my introductory government classes. While my fellow students were learning the material for the first time, it was a review for me. Farrell prepared

me academically, but it also prepared me in other important ways. Being an Italian American, studying abroad in Italy always appealed to me. Farrell prepared me for my two-semesters abroad in ways that other Staten Island

schools would not have been able to. While at Farrell, I studied the Italian language for three years. I then was able to travel abroad with Farrell my junior and senior years (first to Italy and then to France).

My daily routine at Farrell made me independent, responsible, organized, and mature. Working as a reporter

for WFBN television station, running track, and serving as President of the Student Government were all part of my daily routine that helped build my character. However, it was the little things about Msgr.

Farrell that I feel made me better prepared for the college world than those who

did not go to Farrell. Taking the train to school with my best friends every morning, attending debate club meetings, going to School Mass in the gym, collecting cans for Farrell food drives, and raising money for school dances really had an impact on the person I have become. I gained a real independence at Farrell and a

he has served as a Policy analyst intern with techamerica, legal intern for the honorable helene Sacco, Supervising Judge, Family Court, Staten Island, NY, Treasurer for the 2011 Campaign to Re-elect Councilman Vincent M. true sense of personal responsibility. Farrell taught me that as a man, other people depend on you. As a faithful man (Vir Fidelis) it is my job to make sure that I never let those people down. Being a Vir Fidelis means understanding that you have responsibilities to help your fellow man, and above all, your Farrell Brothers.

I am highly involved in two major organizations on campus: Penn State Bridges to Prosperity and Penn State Dance Marathon. Between these two volunteer based organizations, I dedicate over 30

hours each week and I am responsible for leading over 100 students on a weekly basis between the two organizations.

As you can imagine, being so involved in extracurricular activities, in addition to a rigorous engineering curriculum - all while having a normal life - is pretty challenging. In fact, it has been near impossible at times. I attribute much of my involvement and success in college thus far to God and the four years I spent at Monsignor Farrell. Aside from preparing me academically for a college, Farrell has provided me with an education encompassing much more than academics. Qualities like character, perseverance, integrity, discipline, commitment, and faithfulness were truly developed at Farrell, and have helped me overcome the many challenges I now face in college.

This past summer, I, along with nine other Penn State students, traveled to Caimital, Panama to work with the community in the construction of a 250-foot pedestrian footbridge to provide safe access to schools, markets, and healthcare throughout the rainy/flood season. Serving as Construction Manager, I was responsible for maintaining the construction schedule, coordinating the day to day construction tasks,

and maintaining verbal transparency with the community members working on the project with us. The mission of Bridges to Prosperity itself is to empower communities and not simply build a bridge for them. I am happy to say that while in Panama, yes, we were empowering the community with the bridge endeavor, but in actuality, they were empowering us. From opening up their homes and culture to us, to teaching us the efficient ways of building in Panama, it was an experience I will never forget. I will carry the relationships and bonds I made in Panama with me for the rest of my life. We’ve been able to maintain contact with community members and have learned that they have already started assisting other communities with their own bridge endeavors. As a result Penn State Bridges to Prosperity was named the 2015 Bridge Building Team of the year by the National Organization of Bridges to Prosperity.

As the current President for Bridges to Prosperity, I am responsible for guiding and empowering twelve officers ranging from Design Manager to Fundraising Manager. I am also responsible for furthering the club’s growth, not only in membership, but also in its potential donors. This summer, we will have a Project Manager (student) leading the project team as we complete a second bridge and we will have a second team traveling to Panama to secure “In-Country” Partners. I will be leading this team comprised of three students, myself included, as we travel throughout Panama and present to major organizations and companies, universities, and construction material supply houses in attempts to solidify partners in Panama who can help with logistics, operations, materials, and finances. These future partners will also help us locate other communities in need of a bridge.

As for the Penn State Dance Marathon (THON), the World’s largest student run philanthropy in the World, its mission is to provide outstanding

emotional and financial support to the children and families of the Four Diamonds. The Four Diamonds is an organization that helps families who have a child with cancer overcome the financial burdens that insurance does not cover. This year I am one of twenty-one Operations Captains. As an Operations Captain, it is my duty to lead a committee of over 35 students as we set-up and break-down events before and during THON weekend, a 46 hour no sleeping, no sitting, dance marathon held in Penn State’s basketball arena. As a whole , the Operations Committee boasts over 750 members. All together, THON is comprised of fifteen committees and over 15,000 student volunteers. Since 1977, THON has raised over $114 million for children.

Aside from my extracurricular activities, I most recently interned this past summer with Turner

Construction Company at Lincoln Financial Field (Eagle’s Stadium) as a Field Engineer/Superintendent on the Eagle’s stadium upgrades. My major duties included managing a punch list of over 3,500 items involving tracking and coordination with numerous subcontracting companies. I will be completing my third straight internship with Turner this summer, again in Philadelphia.

My time at Farrell is well missed. From teachers who show you that they want you to succeed, to friends who you can truly call brothers. I can frankly say that no friendship I have made in college thus far can compare to the bonds created at Farrell. The friendships you make at Farrell are truly friendships that last forever.

Steven and Caimital community member Frances Reyes celebrate their success on the bridge. Steve and Frances exchanged hats before Steve returned to the United States.

While at Farrell, Steve served as an anchor for the school’s television studio (WFBN-TV) and was a two-time Advance All-Star in football. In 2011, he was named the Barberi Award winner, given to Staten Island’s top student-athlete.

After graduating from Farrell, John became an All-American at Fordham University where he led the nation in scoring. He enjoyed a 12-year career as a professional player and was named to the U.S. men’s national team twice.

John is currently working for the Red Bulls as Reserve Team Coach and Player Development Coordinator.

The Monsignor Farrell High School Alumni Hall of Fame Class of 2014

It started as a simple idea - to honor some of Monsignor Farrell High School’s most distinguished alumni.

Since 2005, the school has paid tribute to a handful of worthy individuals each year. Housed on the right-hand side of the main lobby, the Wall of Fame currently features Farrell men who have been honored with induction into this exclusive club, as well as a Farrell time line that takes viewers on a 50-year trip from the school’s conception to the present day.

From the beginning, the criteria for honoring individuals has been simple. As stated in the middle of the wall of fame.

“To recognize those alumni, who either by their accomplishments in life, their service to their community, their support of the school or by the sheer force of their character have enriched Monsignor Farrell’s legacy for all time.”

On Friday, October 10, 2014, we inducted five deserving alumni into the Hall of Fame, Class of 2014. We also honored two men who dedicated much of their life to Farrell. Soccer coach Jack Hynes and Father John Comiskey. They join other members of the Farrell family on the Vir Fidelis wall.

The Class of 1978 Presents Monsignor Farrell High School With The Largest Class Donation in School History

The Class of 1978 honors its 35 year reunion by contributing a class gift to Monsignor Farrell High School. Donations augment Farrell’s endowment fund, which supports scholarships for the most academically qualified students, regardless of family income. Through the generosity of many of its members, the class of 1978 raised $36,000.

Over 150 classmates and guests from fourteen different states returned to Staten Island to take part in a four-day event to celebrate the Monsignor Farrell High School Class of 1978 35 year reunion.

The spectacular reunion activities kicked off on Thursday, October 17, 2013 with an informal dinner at Canlon’s Restaurant, followed by cocktails at the Above Rooftop Club at the Hilton Garden Inn on Friday evening. Saturday afternoon included a trip to the Broadway hit musical “Jersey Boys”, and a visit to Farrell for Mass in the chapel, and a tour of the school.

The centerpiece of the reunion was the Saturday evening party at the Hampton Inn, Staten Island. The members of ‘78 and their guests enjoyed an evening of dinner and dancing to tunes of the 1970s and 80s, emceed by classmate Mark Lynch. The reunion festivities concluded with a Sunday lunch at Nucci’s South, owned by classmate Pete Montella.

Mr. PresidentJim Oddo ‘84 is nearing the end of his first year in office as the Staten Island Borough President. He was elected to office on November 5, 2013 with 69% of the vote, the largest margin of victory by an non-incumbent in history. He, along with his Farrell brothers, recently celebrated their 30-year reunion.

The Class of 1984 Celebrates 30 YearsNearly 100 classmates gathered at the beautiful Casa Belvedere, Staten Island, on October 4, 2014. Members of the class traveled from all over the United States, some as far away as South Carolina, Florida, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Virginia and even San Jose, California. “It was so good to see everyone,” said Rich Natallichio, who organized the reunion. “The overwhelming feeling is that we should do this every year and not wait ten years for the next one!”Pictured: Thomas Passante, Frank Vaccaro and John Sutera

If you passed by on Amboy Road this past summer, you would have seen the building surrounded by scaffolding for long-overdue repairs. “Cardinal Dolan believes in Farrell, and so the Archdiocese of New York is investing several million dollars to replace our roofs, classroom windows, and repair the masonry which is showing its 50+ years,” explained Monsignor Edmund Whalen ‘76.

The Archdiocese of New York owns the building, which is then leased to Farrell’s Board of Trustees for $1 per year. As such, The Board is responsible for the remainder of the operational costs of the school. “This is a clear sign of the commitment of the Archdiocese to Farrell, and is a challenge to us as alumni to help restore and repair the interior and other facilities so as to move forward into our second half-century,” Monsignor added.

The rebuilding of the school also served as a “lab” for Farrell students interested in careers in engineering. “Farrell students were involved with hands-on work during the various engineering stages of the project, explained Monsignor. “These “internships” began over

the summer and will continue during the year and through next summer, under the guidance of alumni in top engineering and construction management firms.”

Phase I

The first phase of the project was completed with a collaborative effort by Inspiron Construction,

Zubatkin Owner Representation, Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) and Monsignor Whalen. Alumnus and engineer Bill Aprecino ‘77, also a member of The Board of Trustees, worked closely with Monsignor Whalen on the project.

According to Inspiron Construction, Phase I included the replacement and waterproofing of approximately 264 windows and openings and over 70,000 square feet of roofing across several buildings. The exterior façade renovation program consisted of waterproofing the building and replacing the concrete block, brick, steel, and windows.

The interior programs included mechanical upgrades and interior classroom aesthetic upgrades and energy code upgrades to the exterior walls. The focus on the construction of this building was for the façade and windows to be water tight in order for it to be servicing the community for the next hundred years.

One main challenge Inspiron had to endure was to complete the project during an eight-week

period, while accommodating school activities during the summer months. The school opening could not be delayed; therefore, any unforeseen conditions had to be addressed immediately and an alternative solution proposed.

On September 8, 2014 Inspiron Construction turned over Phase I of the school project to the students and academic staff.

The second phase of the project will commence in the summer of 2015.

The recent investment of 6.2 million is a clear sign of the long- term commitment of the Archdiocese to Monsignor Farrell High School.
