Dear Brother Alumni,

n the day after Labor Day, the incoming freshman class was seated nervously in the gym stands, waiting for their new homerooms to be called and set to begin what we realize are someof the best years of their lives. As we know well, they sat with not as yet known friends who will remain with them throughout their lives, and had the first of many experiences that will never be forgotten as they become part of often repeated stories. We remember that first day well, and how it was the beginning of the Farrell experience. The haircuts have changed over the years, and the music (or what they now call music) has changed, but the fact that these are good kids has always been and always will be the constant. They, like us, will have their ups and downs, successes and failures, but wherever they go from here, they will bear the indelible mark of a Farrell Man.

As we begin our 50th year, there is much that can be said and much that should be said. Archbishop Dolan told our graduates last May that he is amazed by our alumni whom he meets all over the country, all of whom relate with pride what Farrell means to them. The Archbishop remarked that rarely has he seen such loyalty, and that when he visits Farrell he sees the reason why.

Two recent events illustrate this dedication to Farrell. Thanks to the hard work, expertise, and generosity of Conrad Schweizer, ’89, a new sprinkler system was added this summer so that thelandscaping Conrad completed last year would be properly maintained. This common sense, practical assistance reflects both the love we alumni share for Farrell, and our recognition that weneed to do what we can to keep the school facilities at their best.

The other initiative goes to the core of why we are here. John Bosco, ’75 has taken the initiative to contact our brother alumni to

John Bosco, ’75 has taken the initiative to contact our brother alumni to

participate in a weekly Alumni Mass. Each Wednesday, the alumni are invited to join in the daily student Mass, now at 7:45 a.m. Our parents sacrificed to provide us with a truly Catholic education, and our Catholic faith is lived only in fidelity to the Eucharist. The deceased alumni are remembered in a particular way, and all of us are given the opportunity to strengthen our faith here in this place where that faith was nurtured and given the opportunity to grow.

What I find so impressive about this initiative, is that it came from the alumni, and not from those of us in the religious life and priesthood. That a group of laymen would see this as a key component of being an alumnus means that what we do here at Farrell is worth doing. The school exists to provide our students with an understanding of our faith and how that faith is lived in whatever walk of life each man chooses. If there is any way to celebrate 50 years, this is it. Why not join us?

Again, thank you for your goodness to our students and for being a true Vir Fidelis. Know of my prayers for you and your family each day.

“Every year’s better than the year before”

Brother Wright began coaching the golf team in 1980 and led the Lions to Catholic High School league championships every year from 1984-1990, as well as in 1992 and 1994.

The 1984 championship was the first in CHSAA league history and since that time, no other coach has eclipsed Br. Wright’s mark of nine championship seasons. Prior to the creation of the league in 1984, Brother coached the Lions to numerous Staten Island golf titles.

Brother also served as the Farrell varsity and junior varsity bowling coach for over 20 years, and was also the director of the intramural football, basketball, and bowling programs.

Left: Brother is pictured with his first Farrell golf team in 1980, and with the last team he coached in 1998.

Congratulations to Sister Grazyna Michniewicz who recently celebrated her 25-year jubilee as a Sister of Charity. Sister, who completed her 20th year at Farrell, was recently highlighted in the Sisters of Charity Halifax annual report.

In addition to teaching theology and psychology, Sister moderates the state textbook club, the Coptic club, and the breast cancer awareness fundraiser. She also moderates the retreat team, coordinating Farrell seniors on their retreat days at Mount Manresa Retreat house.

The Farrell golfers captured the Staten Island CHSAA League Championship with a 12-1 mark.

The Lions nearly took the CHSAA city crown, but fell short in their bid, losing to Fordham Prep 4-1 in the title match.

The team was led by Staten Island Advance All-Star Joe Persichetti ‘12 (pictured), who finished the season with a 9-3-1 record, and Stephen DiPietro ‘11. Both Persichetti and DiPietro qualified for the NYS Federation Boys Golf Championship.

Persichetti also won the Staten Island Amateur Junior division title and has qualified for the Metropolitan Golf Association’s prestigious Carter Cup at Baltusrol next year.

The team is coached by Lou Baldassano ‘73. The Lions were also fortunate to have alumnus John Mascari ‘94, a PGA professional at Canoe Brook Country Club (NJ) working with them this past season.

The Lions won the CHSAA Staten Island Division championship with a 14-1 regular season record.

Nick Thorgersen ‘11, Jordan Stark ‘11, and Mike Viegas ‘12 (pictured) were selected as Staten Island Advance All-Stars.

Viegas, a repeat SI Advance All-Star, boasted a .390 average, led the division with 18 runs scored and tied for a league-best 23 hits. He also stole a division-leading 13 bases in 15 games.

Stark lead the CHSAA with 18 RBI, hit .404, and was third in the division with 19 hits and fourth with 13 runs scored.

Thorgersen led the division with a 0.85 ERA in 33 innings and finished with a 5-0 regular season record.

The varsity tennis team finished the 2011 season undefeated with a perfect 10-0 record.

First year head coach John LeBlanc ‘06, team moderator Miss Dawn Guerriero, along with co-captains Ryan Amberger ‘11 and Bobby Pinto ‘11, led the Lions to their first Staten Island High School Tennis League championship since 2006.

Ryan Amberger, an honors student and four-year standout on the team, served as a captain in his junior year as well, and was the Lions’ first singles player in his senior season. He is currently a freshman at Villanova University.

In addition to serving as a team co-captain, Bobby Pinto was also awarded this year’s Outstanding Student-Athlete Award by the Staten Island Sports Hall of Fame and Patrolman Rocco Laurie Memorial Scholarship Committee.

Also a high jumper and long jumper while at Farrell, Bobby now attends Stevens Institute of Technology where he is studying chemical engineering.

We are all keenly aware that the only constant in life is change. Over the last fifty years Monsignor Farrell High School has grown from a school of one hundred thirteen students to one that

accommodates over one thousand students. During the last fifty years Farrell has evolved from its humble beginnings into a nationally recognized prestigious Catholic High School. In so doing Farrell has been at the forefront of change by constantly updating its curriculum and campus in order to provide its students with the latest advancements in educational content and teaching technology. Farrell continues to update its classrooms with the installation of Smartboards and recent campus additions have been Alumni Stadium and the di Silvestri Wrestling Room. Through all these changes, our core values have nonetheless remained steadfast. Vir Fidelis is sewn into the fabric of life of our students. Farrell’s goal has been and continues to be to prepare its students for all the challenges that life may present them with. Farrell continues to prepare its students to become leaders in their chosen fields of endeavor while remaining true to their faith and what it means to serve others. The school encourages its students to constantly think outside the box while still maintaining their core values.

Because change is a constant theme, it is necessary for Farrell to plan to be ahead of change. Unfortunately to an institution like Farrell change becomes very expensive, but at the same time is important to the value of education and the life of our young Farrell brothers. The Celebration of Monsignor Farrell’s 50th Anniversary is a special moment for the institution and its Farrell family. During my time at Farrell I have heard from many proud Farrell Alumni about the important role Farrell played in their lives. Today, Farrell is still playing that role for its students. In Celebration of Monsignor Farrell, its students, and proud alumni, I ask you to consider how you can do your part in keeping Farrell prepared for change. Consider becoming more involved with your fellow Farrell brothers by participating in Farrell gatherings or contact the alumni office to find other ways to be involved. If you are considering in making a financial gift, remember that your gift is not a gift to Farrell the institution, but to the Farrell students. You represent Farrell as a proud alumnus and Farrell represents you as a prestigious Catholic High School. If you have any questions please call or e-mail me at the information below. I look forward to seeing many of you on September 18th at the Farrell Picnic. Many of alumni and families have registered already. If you still need to register please do so by visiting our website www.monsignorfarrellalumni.com/50th.

· Stay connected with your class via e-mail and web· Update you about the students of Monsignor Farrell· Organizing and executing regional class events· Providing input for your Reunion Weekend events to make them unique and special for your class· Maximizing class participation in the Annual Fund

The long-term goal of the Development Office is to form sizable class committees for each class. As we realize that goal, we encourage classes with active participation to have a team of class agents that consist of an Events Chair, Communications Chair, Annual Fund Chair, and Reunion Gift Chair. If you would like to volunteer as a class agent please call the Office of Development and Alumni Relations.

lumni turned out en masse in 2010/2011 to reunite, catch up with classmates, and support their Alma mater.

Our second Beefsteak night was another success, as was the second annual basketball alumni game.

Lacrosse, soccer, and track & field alumni held their first reunions with the Lax and soccer guys taking the field in a friendly alumni game.

Reunion Gala was well attended by members of classes ending in “1” or “6”, our football alumni returned for the 5th annual Alumni Bowl, and our annual Farrell Golf Classic was a sell-out!

As the di Silvestri room began to fill with faces -- some familiar many not so familiar -- I began to reminisce about the sounds we all heard as we made our way through the paths of Clove Lakes Park, the turn at Van Cortlandt Park just before we began the long stretch up through the hills and as we made our descent. And of course the thundering noise at “The Armory,” which was buoyed by the fleet-footed runners from schools such as Boys High. This is what came to mind as I greeted runners and throwers who came before and after me into the di Silvestri room for the inaugural Cross Country – Track and Field Reunion on that Saturday, April 2. We had 120 alumni, coaches and administrators attend the event. A partial list included Rev. Msgr. Peter Finn (our moderator for so many years), Rev. Msgr. Emmet Nevin and Rev. Msgr. Thomas Bergin (former principals and athletic directors) and the current principal Rev. Msgr Edmund Whalen ’76. The coaches spanned most of the years, from Tom Celandine to Tom Cuffe. If I begin to even try to name some of our distinguished alumni, I fear I would leave some out who are worthy of mention. As I looked about and saw men I have not laid eyes on in decades, it makes you wonder what took us so long to do this. But that’s in the past; we now must look forward to making more memories like this. I look forward with such anticipation to see what is in store for us next. I thank all of you for coming to celebrate our past and to see what our future holds. I am sure there are many Staten Island coaches who under their breath whisper “those damn Farrell boys” for taking yet another championship away from a well-respected adversary. And in that regard, we must give kudos to the current coaching staff led by Tom Cuffe in his 13th year at the helm and his well respected assistants Mike Potter and Derek Gilson.

Here is a list of our accomplishments supplied by Coach Cuffe: • Staten Island Triple Crown Champions 2010-11 • SI Cross-Country Champions • SI Indoor Track & Field Champions • 19 consecutive SI Outdoor Track & Field Champions 1993 thru 2011 • The team captured its 111th overall Varsity Staten Island Championship including all three seasons of Cross-Country -- Indoor Track & Field and Outdoor Track & Field • New York Sectional Cross-Country Champions • New York Sectional Outdoor Track & Field Champions • Multiple individuals and relays ranked in New York State and Nationally • Senior Thomas Donegan named the 2011 Varsity Club Award winner for most outstanding Student-Athlete-Citizen on Staten Island • Senior Robert Pinto named the Staten Island Hall of Fame Scholarship winner for recognition of his athletic accomplishments, his academic record and his community and school service • New Balance Indoor and Outdoor National team qualifiers in the 4xmile and Distance Medley Relay

These coaches continue our legacy of the Long Gold Line and will no doubt lead the current Farrell men to heights we have not reached before.

Respectfully, Mike Marciuliano ‘73

Quotes from alumni reunion attendees:Coach George Kochman: “Many thanks for a wonderful evening the other night- it was great to see the old faces- I see some from time to time, but this was real good. It was especially great to have Tom Celandine back … the first coach to win a championship at Farrell. He started it all, and set a very high standard for all the other coaches to follow……….Also great to see Ed Terranova, a great athlete, coach, and friend. There just wasn’t enough time to talk to everyone for hours, which I could have done.”

Chris Ryan ’73: “I totally agree with George’s sentiment - there just wasn’t enough time. I left with a great feeling and a few new stories.”

Pete Dowling ’71: “It was an outstanding turnout, especially since it was the first one, and it was great to speak with friends that we haven’t seen in many, many years.”

Joe Reina ’73: “Thanks-for-the-fun-night.”

Coach Marty Walsh: I had a great time seeing everyone and I think all had a good time. I didn’t sit down hardly at all and therefore I didn’t have anything to eat and maybe had just one beer. My fault. I was just doing way too much talking and laughing with everyone.”

Tom Hemmes ‘68: “I had a great time. It was good to see some old friends and to make some new ones. quite frankly, there was such a warm feeling in the room it seemed like we all knew each other anyway. I guess it’s because we all have a lot in common. Again, thanks for the great effort. I hope you know it was really appreciated.” Looking forward to seeing everyone at “The 50th.”

Ed Devlin : I love it; we started out great and only got better as the years went on. I’m humbled and very grateful I could be a small part of the championship legacy that is Farrell track. God bless.”

rank Artale ’83 paid a visit to his Alma mater on March 25th to speak to the students about

the field of computers, software, and technology. “It has been more than a couple of

years since I was at the school and back then, there wasn’t even a Facebook,” he noted in

an interview with the alumni office prior to his visit.

“I remember talking to a group of computer science students at the school and only one admitted to

even having a blog,” he recalled of his trip to Farrell a few years ago,

before the social networking boom, and era of self publication.

Frank began his day with an interview at the school’s WFBN television studio, where he spoke about his time at Farrell as a student, as well as his success in the business world.

Since his first work experience in software as part of his summer internship with the New York City Department of Buildings in 1984, Frank has become a highly regarded authority in the IT industry.

Following the interview, Frank met with a select group of students and his old teacher, Father Comiskey, to speak more in-depth about computer technology and software. Some of the Farrell students took the opportunity to show Frank projects they were working on in class, including software design, gaming, and web development.

“I wanted to be included in this group because I wanted to see a modern success product from my school,” said Vincent Nabavi, student body vice president for the class of 2011. “I also wanted to represent my school to Mr. Artale because I am very proud of the way Farrell has improved and changed me as a person,” he added.

Joseph Bassano ‘11, who was also in the group Frank met with, spoke of how he was inspired after the meeting with the 1983 graduate. “It gave me a new perspective on how work ethic affects success,” he noted. “Hearing how much Mr. Artale’s time at Farrell has affected his success makes me proud to have walked the same halls as he did at Farrell.”

Frank also spoke of emerging technology, such as cloud computing, and touchpads. “The most interesting of all the topics Mr. Artale spoke about was “the cloud,” said Jonathan Zimmer ‘11. “The idea of “the cloud” shocked me almost as much as when he pulled a tablet computer from his jacket pocket to demonstrate the development of “apps” and touch-screen technology!”

Dear Mr. Artale,

Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to meet you during your visit to Farrell. I was quite impressed with what you had to say about your career choices and that you attributed all of your success to Monsignor Farrell High School.

It provided my classmates and me with an added boost of confidence that we, too, can succeed in college and beyond with the skills we have learned at Farrell.

I hope one day I will have the pleasure of meeting you again and I, too, look forward to seeing what changes have been made to our school when I return as an alumnus. Once again, thank you very much.

- Andrew Dunn ‘11

Dear Mr. Artale,

Thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to come and visit Farrell. I can just imagine how it felt to take a walk down memory lane. It must have hit you like a ton of bricks to realize how fast you have grown since your were in these halls not too many years ago.

Hopefully with the education I have received here at Farrell, I will become a success such as yourself. I know it will be a long road for me, but it is inspiring to know that someone that was in my position was able to do it. Thank you again for your visit.

Peter Demontreux ‘98 Received the New York City Fire Department’s Highest Award for bravery. The James Gordon Bennett Medal, established in 1869, is awarded annually for the most outstanding act of heroism in the New York City Fire Department. Peter, assigned to Ladder Co. 132 in Brooklyn, one of the department’s busiest companies, saved two people from a burning apartment building on August 30, 2010. According to FDNY accounts of the rescue, “Peter first rescued a 60-year-old man who was hanging out a third-floor window of the apartment; he then went inside and crawled to a rear room, where he found 51-year-old Clyde Mantany hanging out a back window. Shielding Mr. Mantany as best he could, Peter led him back through the searing heat to the front of the building. After passing through a room now filled with flames, the two men were literally on fire when they arrived at the front window. Other firefighters immediately turned a hose on them, putting out the flames on their clothes and bodies.” After graduating Farrell, Peter earned his degree in business management from CUNY Staten Island. He and his wife Gina reside on Staten Island with their children Peter Jr., Allison, Evelyn, and Gwyneth. His brother Lou graduated Farrell in 1990.

To remind Farrell alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends of the importance of the Mass in God’s plan for our salvation, starting September 14, 2011 and

continuing every Wednesday throughout the school year, Monsignor Whalen will inaugurate ‘Worship

Wednesdays’ at the 7:45am Mass in the Farrell chapel.

The purpose of the ‘Worship Wednesdays’ initiative is to offer to Farrell alumni, students, faculty, staff
