Congratulations to our Torch Award for Ethics winners. Our twelfth annual program recognized a number of outstanding businesses, individuals, and high school students with awards. The fifth annual Torch Award for Ethics online auction raised $4,690 for the BBB Foundation. “Thank you” to the sponsors, businesses that donated items and to our generous bidders. Our Torch Award for Ethics program would not be possible without

your support.

During the first six months of this year we have provided 287,465 total instances of service. Over 247,000 sought information on our Business Profiles and over 36,000 requests for industry specific Accredited Business rosters were provided to consumers. Our electronic quote (e-quote) referral service allows us to act as a liaison between our accredited businesses and consumers. We

facilitated 671 e-quotes since January and very recently added text messaging as an option to receive e-quotes. If you have text messaging available on your phone, please contact us so that we can be sure to add this feature for your business. We are also providing the ‘Customers are Calling’ postcards electronically. Each month you will receive an e-mail letting you know how many times your BBB Business Profile was requested the previous month.

New Benefits For Accredited Businesses

Request a Quotes (eQuotes) can now be sent to your cell phone through text messaging, helping your business respond to requests quicker. The text messages are in addition to emails a business currently receives with eQuote requests. Emails will continue to be sent after text messaging is added, unless you wish to delete the email option and go with text messaging alone.

The number that will display on your phone from eQuotes will be 850-760-0220 with a note indicating it is from BBB.

To add cell phone numbers and additional email addresses, please contact our office at your earliest convenience.

Customers Are Calling postcards mailed out at the beginning of each month will be sent by email. The first one was sent in early July. For the first few months your business will also receive a postage mailed card as we test the electronic version. The electronic postcards will provide the same information, how many times your BBB Business Profile was requested the previous month.

55,000 Pounds Shredded at Spring Event in Pensacola

The Community Shred-A-Thon in the

Escambia and Santa Rosa County areas was held on Saturday, April 22nd for individuals to bring their personal paper documents such as; (tax information & returns, bank statements, canceled checks, paycheck stubs, ATM receipts, credit card statements, utility bills, household receipts, credit card receipts, insurance papers, home financial information, personal or health documents,

any paper documents containing personally identifiable information), to be shredded.

This year we ventured west to the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds and this venue proved to be the best ever. The parking lot was large enough to

handle all of the cars with no one having to spend time on Mobile Highway. The lines went smoother and much faster with one consumer writing that he “went through the line so fast that his

coffee didn’t get cold.” We hope to have our future events at the fairgrounds and appreciate all those that made it possible for us to hold the event there.

Thanks to our partners, we saw 1575 vehicles come through the line and we shredded 55,000 pounds in just a few hours. We appreciate Gilmore Services for providing the means of helping the community keep their indentities safe by shredding

documents, Cat Country/News Radio and WEAR-TV3 for spreading the word about the event, being on hand to talk with consumers and help them shred their documents. We also want to thank UWF ROTC members and Tate High School AJROTC for their participation. We could not provide this free service to the community without the support and volunteers that made it a successful day.

Better Business Bureau Serving Northwest Florida offers consumers the opportunity to share their experience with a business on a BBB Business Profile. Your BBB offers this free service as a way to assist and educate consumers and help them make informed decisions in the marketplace.

Customers can share their experience by rating the interaction with the business as positive, negative, or neutral, and rate the likelihood they will recommend this business to a friend and/or colleague.

After a customer has submitted their review, BBB receives the information and confirms the validity of the review. BBB forwards the review to the business and offers an opportunity for the company to respond or write a rebuttal. The review is published within three to 10 business days once a business has decided whether or not to respond to the customer review.

Customer Reviews provide an opportunity for future customers to learn what their experience with your business may be like. The review system does not affect the calculation of the business’ BBB rating.

Encourage your customers to write a review by: ¾ Posting a message with your BBB seal in your business window ¾ Reminding them of the opportunity on your social media pages ¾ At check-out, encourage customers to share their experience ¾ Include your BBB Business Profile link on your business’ website and Facebook page for easy access ¾ Request postcards from our office to hand to or mail to customers

BBBs across the country receive phone calls from consumers daily with legitimate concerns/complaints. We try to handle each one with sincerity and respect. However, there are times when the complaint is ‘out of our pervue.’ Here are excerpts from some of those calls:

• “I want to file a complaint. I hired this landscaping company to do my lawn in preparation for a party I was having. They came out and did a beautiful

job – on my neighbor’s lawn instead of mine!”

• “I bought this old used car from a neighbor. We agreed that it would be as-is. When I test drove it, it sounded really loud, but I bought it anyway. Now I discovered it needs a muffler. Can I file a complaint against him?” (as-is was explained to the caller)

• “I want to complain about this restaurant. They won’t give

my son his last check. They fired him because he ate 300 bowls of clam chowder and 150 cheesecakes since he was hired three months ago. Can they do that?”

• “I got a letter from a charity which says it helps with cancer research but I don’t know if I want to give to them.” When asked why by the BBB representative the caller stated “because their address is Cemetery Road. Don’t you think

it’s odd for them to pick an office on a street with a name like that?”

• “I want to file a complaint! I hired this contractor to do some work on my house. The guy had an affair with my wife and she left me!” After the BBB Representative sympathized with the man and explained that wasn’t something they could accept a complaint about the man said “ok, fine. But he did crappy work too!”
