Town prepares to welcome Olympic Torch A police-led initiative launched in July 2010 to help combat crime on industrial parks has been hailed such a success, that Bishop Auckland has now joined the scheme. The Durham 'Business Watch' scheme was launched after increased levels of reported crime on the Newton Aycliffe Industrial Estate. Since then, reported crime has fallen on the estate by 37%, an impressive figure when the theft of metal in other areas has risen to almost epidemic levels. The initiative now boasts a membership of 298 businesses and includes members in Shildon, Ferryhill, Spennymoor, Sedgefield, Peterlee and Derwentside. And in the last few days the scheme has expanded to cover more than 40 business premises in South Church Industrial Estate. Community liaison officer Neil Langthorne said, “The British Crime Survey regularly highlights low levels of reported crime in active Neighbourhood Watch areas, and Business Watch is now sharing the same principles and enjoying similar results. “The scheme is unique in that business members can register and share informa- tion using a new dedicated internet forum,” he said. Business Watch targets suspects and offenders frequenting industrial sites to commit crime. The new forum is providing the police with increased levels of intelligence and helping to identify offenders and monitor their activities,” added Mr Langthorne. Members can also access impartial security advice at www.durhambusiness- watch.org.uk For more information on the initiative, contact Neil Langthorne at Durham Con- stabulary on 01325 742755. Accounts manager faces jail after railway swindleEx-accounts manager for Weardale Railway, Corina Heslop of Rookhope Grove, Bishop Auckland, has been told to expect a prison sentence for defrauding the rail company. Heslop, 42, was remanded in custody after being found guilty of nine of the ten charges she faced during a three-week-long trial at Durham Crown Court. The allegations against Heslop related to eight cheques paid into her own accounts for a total of £36,781 in 2009, when she was the company’s management accountant. She had altered invoices and company records to make it appear the money had been paid to creditors. Heslop was also accused of damaging computer

records to remove data at the company’s offices, as well as having company documents at her home in Bishop Auckland that could have been used for more fraud. The jury returned guilty verdicts on all charges but the criminal damage offence and Heslop was remanded in custody by Judge Christopher Prince, pending completion of probation reports.Judge Prince told Heslop that, “The guidelines under which I operate for an offence of this type, involving nearly £40,000 from an employer, mean that you would be expected to receive a sentence of between four and five years.” Heslop is also to be

sentenced for a previous conviction for fraudu-lently obtaining £70,000 in housing benefit over an eight-year period by falsely claiming she was tenant in the house she actually owns. Judge Prince told her, “For an offence of that nature the sentence would be of the order of 12 months and so the overall sentence could be between four to six years.” Heslop will be sentenced on Friday 29th June. Earlier in the trial, Heslop’s husband, 45 year-old James Raymond Heslop, also of Rookhope Grove, was cleared of charges of criminal damage and possessing items for use in fraud after directions from the judge.

South Church Nursing Home made a wonderful job of decorating their home both inside and out to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.Activity Coordinator, Janine Humble, spent a lot of time with the staff and residents decorating the rooms with paper chains, made by the residents, along with bunting, balloons and flags. All the residents signed a card congratulating the

Queen and they received a wonderful card from Buckingham Palace. There was live enter-tainment at the party on Tuesday and all the residents either wore red, white and blue or their Sunday best. The home celebrates every special event each year, including Mother and Father’s Days, St Patrick’s and St George’s Days, Halloween, Easter and Christmas.

Whilst cleaning a client’s windows, Paul Reynolds noticed three gold rings on the doorstep of the house, picked them up and placed them in his pocket. The victim was attending to her garden but the incident was captured on the house CCTV system at her home in High Etherley on 12th May.Reynolds took the rings to a shop in Bishop Auckland

Window cleaner’s shameand sold them, however, he was soon arrested and made full admissions to the police before returning to the shop, buying back the rings and returning them the their rightful owner. In mitigation it was stated that the 43 year-old was very remorseful and that his actions had been op-portunistic and totally out of character. Reynolds was now paying the price of

his actions that day, as his window cleaning business is already losing work in the community because he was perceived as being dishonest. Magistrates at Newton Aycliffe sentenced the defendant to a 12 months conditional discharge, which steps outside of their sentencing guidelines, and ordered Reynolds to pay costs of £85.

The residents and staff of Bishopsgate Lodge Care Home had to make al-ternative plans after the weather prevented them from holding an outdoor street party to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee. Not to be deterred, they moved back inside and instead held an indoor street party, colourfully decorating the residents dining area with flags, bunting, union flag table cloths, hats, balloons and all manner of party material.

The party was treated to a delicious buffet of homemade food and every resident received a red, white and blue handmade button hole. All the staff also wore the national colours to work. The well-organised event took three weeks to prepare and a full three days to decorate the entire building. But now that the Jubilee party is over, the cel-ebrations don’t end there. Joining the UK flag and bunting will be the flags

and colours of all the home nations as the residents look forward to watching the European Football Championships on telly. “Even though England is the only home nation playing in the tournament,” explained Head Housekeeper, Mandy Reid, who has been re-sponsible for the Jubilee celebrations as well as the new decorations, “we will be keeping all the home nations in mind while the tournament is on.”“And after the football, the UK flags will all be going back up in time for the Olympics,” said Mandy. It looks like the residents of Bishopsgate Lodge are in for a colourful summer of celebration!

While most of us spent the Bank Holiday weekend relaxing, students, teachers and volunteers from King James I Academy took on the challenge of a Coast to Coast cycle ride to raise funds for three worthy projects. The test of endurance saw the fundraising team cycle 137 miles from Whitehaven to Tynemouth over a three-day period, camping along the way. This is the latest in a series of fundraising events and activities, which have been organised by students over the last academic year.Eight Sixth Form students took part in the Coast to Coast, accompanied by five members of staff and two pro-active volunteers who joined the team simply because they believe in the value of the projects and wanted to show their support. Two further staff members took on the support role of organising camps and cooking for the hungry

cyclists at various check points. All money raised from sponsorship will be split equally between three projects: ‘Volunteering in Ghana’, which will see Sixth Formers work on a variety of projects from building and repairing homes to working in schools and hospitals; ‘Jamaica Difference’, organised by Bishop Auckland Theatre Hooligans (BATH), which unites the communi-ties of Bishop Auckland and Montego Bay through exchange visits that celebrate Dance, Drama and international friendship; and lastly, ‘Enterprise USA’, where students work with children of all ages in an American Summer Camp.Headteacher, Nick Grieveson explains the value of student fund-raising activities at King James, especially those that involve the whole school: “Our young people are the future of our

community so we want to encourage them to get involved and take respon-sibility for improving our society, both in and out of school and at a local, national and global level. These fundraising activities really help our students to understand and embrace the true meaning of community spirit. Whether actively taking part in a fundraising event or simply sponsoring a fellow student, everyone can take pride in the overall success of the project and feel a sense of belonging. We would like to thank our local business community and residents who have given us an enormous amount of support so far and continue to do so. This gives our young people a fine example of the value of working together to help others.”All donations towards the fund or offers of sponsor-ship will be gratefully received until the end of the academic year in July.

Bishop Auckland St. Mary’s Angels sent five teams down to the annual Blackpool tournament last weekend, and came back with two winners’ trophies, while the other the teams just lost out in the semi-finals.The Under 10 Devils had a great win in the final of the Plate by beating Carlisle 1-0 with a goal from Lauren Black, after playing six games on the Saturday and Sunday. The Under 10 Angels were unlucky to lose in their semi-final. If they had won it would have been an all

Darlington to play at Heritage ParkIn a surprise change of plan the new Darlington FC 1883 (DFC 1883) has announced it will play at Bishop Auckland and not Shildon next season, as had been previously announced. According to the Bishop club’s website, a two year deal has been agreed for the groundless club to play at Heritage Park.DFC 1883 says it has agreed to share with Bishop Auckland FC, after citing alleged safety concerns about Shildon’s Dean Street ground, which the club had agreed to use. Shildon has vigorously denied safety concerns, pointing out that Dean Street is inspected annually by the FA and meets health and safety standards for the Northern League.Denis Pinnegar, chairman of DFC 1883, said he had spoken to the chairman of Shildon AFC to advise that Darlington FC would not be ground sharing with the club next season. He added, “This is in no

way meant to be disre-spectful to Shildon – they are a lovely club and nice people, but we have sig-nificant concerns about safety, bearing in mind we will be bringing several hundred fans to the ground.” Pinnegar, whose club is appealing the FA’s decision to demote it by four divisions after it was unsuccessful in agreeing a CVA proposal with creditors, said Bishop Auckland’s Heritage Park had recently received provisional approval to become a Category C ground, which meant it would be suitable to hold Evo-Stik Premier games. DFC 1883 is hoping that, if its appeal is successful, it will be moved up to the Evo-Stik league. Pinnegar said, “This decision was not taken because of our appeal to the FA regarding our placement in the Northern League, but it will poten-tially enhance our appeal.”

Terry Jackson, chairman of Bishop Auckland FC, welcomed the partner-ship with the Darlington club, “It’s fantastic news,” he said. “It will provide us with important extra income and Darlington with a place to play next season.” Gareth Howe, Shildon FC club secretary, was left frustrated by the Darlington club’s claim that the move was due to safety concerns. He said, “We wish them all the best and we hope things work out for them. However, I resent the way they’re using health and safety as an issue when our ground meets health and safety standards for the Northern League. "It suggests there’s something wrong with our ground, but our ground meets Northern League specification. "We are inspected by the FA every year and if there was an issue it would’ve been addressed.”

St. Mary’s final! The Under 12s had a fantastic weekend playing seven games and winning all of them. They scored 30 goals in the process and only conceded three. They beat Lumley in the final 4-0 to win the league cup.The Under 13s played six games, winning one, drawing two and losing three, but only got beat by penalties in the semi-final of the Plate. The Under 15s were unlucky to lose to Cestria in the semi-final of the league cup by 2-1
