Living in Lighthouse Point Florida is like living in paradise. As the Mayor of our great city, I am proud to be one of its residents and especially honored to serve our community.

As we are constantly protected by the beam of the famed Hillsboro Lighthouse which has stood guard over the Hillsboro Inlet since 1906, Lighthouse Point has become its own beacon of stability in a sea of economic turmoil. In a climate of falling property values throughout South Florida, our city posted increased prop-erty values. While many cities in Broward County have raised taxes or cut services to make ends meet, Lighthouse Point actually cut tax millage and has maintained all its high quality services. While committed to preserving our community’s in-terests at all levels, our City Commissioners, Boards, and Employees are doing all they can to promote a positive business environment that encourages businesses to grow and prosper.

We are proud of the special relationships developed over the years with our busi-ness community that continually supports and develops stronger bonds between our residents and our business owners. A common theme has always been to “Shop Local”. We need to plant the seeds of economic recovery in our own back-yard. Every dollar spent in our City is re-spent many more times before depleting its economic value.

We have a wondrous collection of fabulous restaurants and businesses vying for services in troubling times. Why not next time we’re looking for somewhere to eat, somewhere to shop, or professional services, do it locally. Local businesses create character and prosperity in our own community and local business owners re-invest in our community.

We are especially thankful for all donations made to support City activities from the Lighthouse Point Chamber of Commerce. Improvements to our Library, Emer-gency Medical Services and recreational programs have all been made possible by generous grants from the Chamber.

I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and commit to a long and mutually prosperous relationship with our own Lighthouse Point Chamber of Commerce.

Dear Residents and Members, As we enter our ninth year of existence, I am truly proud to be leading such a wonderful business organization. Over the past few years, the Lighthouse Point Chamber has grown and with new businesses moving here all the time, we look forward to a suc-cessful business community in 2012 and beyond. Our growth as a chamber and as a com-munity is a testament to, despite tough economic times in recent years, our community’s dedication to shopping and conducting business locally and supporting local businesses. Every month the Lighthouse Point Chamber has networking, learning and out-reach events in the community to grow businesses and to introduce the community to the many fine businesses in our area. As our community continues to grow, please continue to support your local businesses by shopping local. This ensures continued growth and pros-perity in your community. And helps keep our business community as vibrant as it is now. One symbol of our community’s vibrancy is the Taste of Lighthouse Point, spon-sored by the chamber. Now in its 8th year, this event has almost outgrown its location with over 450 people in attendance helping to raise thousands of dollars every year that goes back into the chamber business development fund and into the community through charitable donations. Since its inception, the Lighthouse Point Chamber has emphasized giving back to the community, and without every single one of you who helps put this event together every year, we wouldn’t be able to accomplish as many of our philanthropic goals. From the restaurants who donate their time and food to other businesses who donate auction items to the tireless volunteers who make it happen every year, it wouldn’t be possible without you and we are grateful for the support. Thank you to everyone who has given of themselves to this community fundraiser. Over the years, funds have purchased equipment for the Doreen Gauthier Light-house Point Library, city playgrounds, fire equipment, community computer labs, class-rooms have been adopted at Norcrest Elementary, scholarships for high school students and many other charitable donations in the community from this annual event. But this is only one part of what the chamber does. This Navigator in your hands is your guide to the City of Lighthouse Point. The chamber has multiple events, so we hope that you will join us regularly by visiting our calendar of events at www.lhpchamber.com. In the meantime, we hope that you will continue to shop local and refer others to businesses in Lighthouse Point. Shop where you live. Lighthouse Point History

The first home was built in Lighthouse Point in 1947. It was located on the southeast corner in the area now known as Sample Road and N.E. 21 Avenue. At the time the land was mangrove swamps & fertile farmland. In the following years, R.E. Bateman acquired land to develop a subdivision called Hillsboro Isles.

By 1956, there were about 600 residents of this new community and they chose to incorporate instead of being annexed into Pompano Beach. City Hall was operated from a store front at 1811 NE 24th Street, fire protection was provided by volunteers and Court was only held when needed, on Saturday mornings.

Throughout the late 1950’s and ‘60’s various subdivisions were added and eventually the city’s land area was increased to 2.36 square miles. It is bordered on the west by Federal Highway & the east by the Intracoastal Waterway.. In the ‘80’s, hundreds of shade trees were planted throughout the city as part of the Green Team project.

The expanded population desired more amenities so the city began developing several parks including Dan Witt Park, DeGroff Park and Frank McDonough Park (home of the Lake Placid Tennis Center) as well as many “mini parks” throughout the city. The city’s library was moved from its storefront location to a full service site at City Hall. And Al Fletcher Park became the site for the city’s Pram fleet & Police boat dockage.

Lighthouse Point remains a small town nestled between Pompano & Deerfield Beach. Most of the cities 11,000 residents live in single family homes. The city is characterized by informal affluence and a leisurely pace. The attractive neighborhoods are quiet; tree shaded and provide views of the 18 miles of waterways that meander thru the city.

The City of Lighthouse Point Community Bus “Tender” is air-conditioned, wheelchair accessible in accordance with the American Disabilities Act (ADA), and free of charge. This service is designed to work in conjunction with Broward County Transit (BCT) by way of connection to BCT fixed routes, 10, 11, 34, 83 and US 1 Breeze. Riders making connection with BCT buses are expected to pay the appropriate fares.

Other community bus routes connecting with the “Tender” are as follows:

• City of Pompano Beach and Hillsboro Beach at Pompano Citi Centre, Timepoint, #11

• City of Deerfield Beach and Hillsboro Beach at Target, Timepoint #12

Service operates as close to the schedule as possible, although traffic conditions may cause the bus to arrive slightly early or late. Please allow yourself enough time when traveling. Bus operators stop only where they can see passengers waiting. Please stand in an area easily visible to the bus operator.
