    1. What is coaching?A. Coaching is usually associated with

    sports.- In business, coaching meanspersonal achievement and

    excellence within a meaningful lifearena.B. Defined: Process by which an

    individual works with others tofacilitate higher level performance .

    - Coaching is connected toleadership.- Pulling out the best in individuals.- Not just directing.

    2 . How does coaching differ

    from other helping professions?A. Coaching is one of the mostmodern approaches in developingpotential.- Focuses on positive aspects of

    behavior compared to problem-based or pathological approaches.

    B. Pathological approaches (problembased):- Can be seen in psychiatry ; also

    in psychology (problem based).C. In contrast, coaching is a more

    positive and proactive approach . A new way of thinking .

    3 . What are the twoparadigms of coaching?

    A. Two different mind sets.- First is: Knowledge-based coach.- Similar to directive management.

    - Referred as the expert modelof coaching.

    B. Expert model often done withgood intentions.- Coach seeks to ensure

    performers receive all of theknowledge, insight, and skillsnecessary for high performance.

    Reality.- Generate Options.- Organizing a Way forward.This is the G.R.O.W. Model

    keep focus, - Important tobe smart.

    D. SMART: Specific,Meaningful/MeasurableAgreed to, Realistic, andTime-phased

    essential to understand your groupsreality .- This is NOT about solving problems,

    rather it is helping them think moreclearly and how to solve their ownissues, problems, or dilemmas.- Practice active listening. Which istaking an active role when hearingthe issue.

    - Repeat back what you heard and doso to their satisfaction.- Improving the clients motivation aswell strengthening the relationship withclient is the result of proper activelistening.

    identify potential actions to solvetheir problems.- First seek out the clients best

    thinking.- After pulling out or eliciting optionsyou begin to offer additional insights.1. This keeps client accountable fortheir own changes.2

    . Clients usually come up with ownanswers, which gives a sense ofempowerment.

    3 . Sets stage for client wanting tohear you.

    own options gives client intrinsicmotivation & ownership to takeaction.- Once you have pulled all of yourclients options then you may askpermission to give suggestions .- At this point, you have themchoose from many options thathave been given and identify whichto take action on.- This leads to design a way

    forward.

    is identified.- You have listened anddiscussed their current realityand generated options.- A plan of action or wayforward is setting goals thatare most important, and mostmotivating.

    - These are consideredcritical variables ofperformance.- You then can create anaction plan and SMART goal.

    helps increase the decision speed ofthe client.- Helping to focus their actions and

    make decisions that maximize

    performance .I. Conducting G.R.O.W. sessions givesthe leader confidence in his or herskills.- Coaches do not have to be experts-

    but focuses more on helping .*Job is to help them to: Focus,generate ideas, and act on skills theclient already knows .
