Words used interchangeably for Measurement and Description Please note that word “uyaram” for tall is also used for the measurement term of “height.” Therefore, in Tamil to say someone is “tall,” indicates that he is of a considerable “height,” that is “uyaram.” The same rule applies for the word “ganam.” To indicate someone is heavyset, we say that they are of a considerable “weight,” that is “ganam.”

Therefore, to say “the girl is short,” we say “Intha penn Kullam-aaga irukiraal. Instead of tanning salons, there are stores with beauty products for skin-lightening. It is considered that the lighter the skin, the more attractive it makes one. This is, of course a stereotype, and in more educated circles, it may not be so prevalent but it is important to note not to comment on another’s skin tone as being dark as it is considered rude and offensive.
