My dear Friends,It is anything but complimentary to be called a foal,

although at one time to be a "fool" was considered an honourableprofession. The "fool" was employed hy kings. His duty wasto be funny and amusing, and it was not altogether an easyoccupation, for, as Shakespeare says-"-

"To play the fool well craves a kind of wit:He must observe their mood on whom he jests,The quality of persons and the time,And, like the haggard, check at every featherThat comes before his eye. This is a practiceAs full of labour as a wise man's art."

JOHN BONNERNEWSAGENT

15/17, BASLOW ROAD,Totley ,Rise

There are still, happily, fools; that is, people who arefunny and witty-people who bring a sense of humour to almostevery situation. They can even make tragedy seem less tragic.Just as there are born preachers and born musicians, and bornwriters, so it would seem to me that there are born fools. Theydo not try to be ludicrous and ridiculous-they just are. It isin them, and so often by their foolishness they help weary menand women along life's way.

But there is another kind of fool. He is the person whocan easily be deluded, taken in, or, "taken for a ride". Howoften have J been such a fool I I suppose I must look dumbsometimes, although, like most people, 1 like to fancy that I'mnot as dumb as I look. The truth is, however, that like mostpeople. I do have my dumb moments and I have been made afool of more than once. To avoid being gullible we need to haveour wits about us all the time. and I !'Il.!riouslydoubt whetherthat is possible.

Then there are fools In another sense. People there arewho are lust positively stupid, thoughtless and ignorant. Isuppose you have heard of the Englishman and the Irishmanwho were travelling on a bicycle made for two? At the 'top ofa steep hill they stopped for a rest. "That was a stiff climb",said the Englishman. "Sure", said the Irishman, "and we shouldhave gone backwards if I hadn't kept the brakes on all the time",Yes, indeed, there really are people like that Irishman who dothe most absurd things. You often wonder if they have a scrap .of intelligence in their whole beings, We have, I suppose, tosuffer such fools gladly, though it is very difficult and requiresmuch patience and tolerance. We take "avoiding action" wherewe can! Some people seem to be devoid of commonsense -like the thief who would rather steal than do an honest day'swork and spends most of his life in gao]- like the Universitystudent who devotes all his time to sport and plea!lurll rather

I SHOULD LIKE TO HAVEyour thought on a problem which

haunts my life asa parish priest. There ate a great number of peoplewho look upon one church or anotheras their parish church or their placeof worship. Some few may come twicea Sunday, more once, many maybeonce a fortnight, or once a month, orhere and there, or only at the greaterfestivals.

From a superficial point of view, however, many of our churches wouldappear to be going forwardsatisfactorily.

My ProblemBut here is my problem and worry

-are we really getting anywhere atall? Is this sort of observance of theChristian faith making the slightestimpact on us? Are we in any senseallowing the power of God to work in

our lives? Has there developed simplya particular habit which many findcongenial but which has no deepermeaning or spiritual worth?

Now, if it .is this-a little some-thing more than a. nominal adherenceto the Christian faith which the manin the street professes, but which infact has no power to help towardsspiritual change and growth in ourlives-then has it any value, any realworth?

Spiritual Growth makes'Great DemandsI say this because while I am a

parish priest, I am also an ordinaryperson, making my own spiritualpilgrimage through life. Normally, Itake part in four or five religiousservices each Sunday. Most days Ispend half to one hour in specificreligious exercise; Bible reading and

yourself think how horrible everything is,and how "it isn't fair!" (how often do wesay that!) or do you stop and think of allthe things that are "going your way,"all the things you've got to be glad about?I know often I don't. It's easy-butawfully sj]ly-to get so interested inourselves, and to be so sorry for ourselves,

that we miss a lot of absolutelywonderful things go i n g onaround us.

I know this, because it's hap-pened to me. We can get.so tied-up with self-pity that we don'teven notice if the sun is shining! We've got a great deal more tobe thankful for than many

people. We've talked about this before--the fact that we have homes and familiesand friends and the good things of life. Atthe end of this month we'll be thinkingspecially of some people who have noneof these; the refugees and those in needwho will be in our thoughts and prayersduring Christian Aid Week.

But we have something else, too. Wehave the Church, and most of us-thoseof us who aren't sick, or otherwise unableto get there-can go. and worship God,and learn about Him, and learn to loveHim (and without loving God we'll do verylittle with our lives), Sunday by Sunday.

Now a lot of people can't go to Church-in some parts of the world it's verydifficult, and sometimes dangerous-somepeople are ill, some could go but don'twant to (and that's a point, too-why don'tthey want to? Could it be because theydon't think much of those of us who do?).

What about us? Do we go, gladly andthankfully, grateful for the privflegewhich is ours?

Do we bother to find out thingsabout our Church which we don'tknow? How much, for instance, did

you know about"Church Assembly"before you pickedup this magazine? How much did I,until I had to lookit up be fo reIwrote this l If wehad a General

Knowledge paper on the ChristianChurch, how well would you or I do?And if we think, not very well, wouldn'tit be interesting and worthwhile to tryand find out?

God bless you,GERALDINE MIDDLETON.

IS YOUR MEDICINEDear All or You,

Last month when I wrote to you I hadanother letter for you-from Brigitte. And1 expected that any day I would alsohave one for you from Stefan. Stefan'sletter reached me on Christmas Day, butit takes so long for a magazine to get intoprint (just how it does, and all thathap pen s to thesheets of typingpaper and 1a 0 s epictures before theact u a I magazineappears, is quite anexciting story, bythe way-I onlyknow bits of it my-self, but it's fascinating) that it has takenfrom December until April before you canread what he said. Anyway, here it is-Dear Children,

I cannot write as well as you can. Youwrite so beautifully. I would like so muchto see you. Have you any snow yet? Wehave not yet. Greetings to you all fromAustria.

Stefan and Rosemaria and the baby.Stefan's mother wrote too, and she

said-e-Dear Friends,

The children have written to us, and sobeautifully. Stefan finds it so hard to dohandwriting.

With a thousand greetings,Your grateful Maria.

So you can see how much your lettersare appreciated.

By the time you are reading this it willbe April, and I hope it will be warm andsunny and there will be prim-roses in bloom-which is why Iasked Mr. D'Arcy, who drawsthe pictures for us, to do some-thing with primroses for thismonth.

Easter holidays, pic-nics (if the weatherIdS us), country walks-all the nice thingsthat the coming ofSpring means. We haveso many things to beglad about, andprobably most of usdon't spend nearly enough time beingglad about them, and thanking God forthem. Do you?

When something happens that upsetsyou, or which doesn't happen to pleaseyou, if you're sick or unhappy or disap-pointed, what do you do? Do you let

Now the Bible speaks about many kinds of fools. I thinkthe outstanding fool of the Old Testament is the man who saysin his heart ~ "There is no God". He is the man who hasn'tbrains enough to see or reason that the evidences for theexistence of God far outweigh all the arguments that can bemustered against it. Actually, there are few out and outatheists today, but there are many, many people who act as .ifthere were no God. They never go to church, they never say aprayer unless they are in terrible trouble and then it's "panicstations" all round and they take no account of God in dealingwith either themselves or others. What fools these mortals be-or how stupid can you get ?

The belief which we Christians hold on to so tenaciouslyis that God is supreme Love even when it would appear thatHe is not. But then, we have seen the Cross and not only theCross-we have known something of the Easter victory. Andwe may not be so very clever but we are not stupid enough tolet go of that !

It was Tennyson who wrote "It is a world of fools" andundeniably there are not a few of one kind and another. Butthe most important question is-"what kind of a fool are you 7"

Yours sincerely,FREDERICK ADAMSON.

Mv dear friends," "This is your Life" is a very popular television

programme. As you know, it is a programme which deals withthe life of a well known, and occasionally, outstandingpersonality. The B.B.C. choose their person and get to knowall they can about the person without his or her knowing, andthen by all manner of intrigue the person is lured to a studioand is told by Eamonn Andrews: "This is your life"!

Personally, on the few occasions on which I. havewatched these programmes, they have filled me with a feelingof unutterable boredom and left me with a feeling of slightembarrassment. However, the one thing that has impressed meabout this programme is that no man or woman has a life apartfrom other people. This is true of us all. Other people areconcerned in your life and mine - they influence us and weinfluence them. And so I am led to ask at the outset, "Whatis your life?" "What is my life T"

Science has now answered a thousand questions whichwere unanswered not many years ago. What is the result ofthat? The result is that out of these answers there has arisen;'[ group of new questions, deeper, more penetrating and moreenthralling than any which were asked before. If you turn tothe writings of Einstein or of Sir James Jeans you will realisehow tremendous these new questions are-these questions thathave grown out of answers. Everyone of them, I believe comesfrom God, and every one of them, if it is an intelligent question,is a witness to God's activity in the world. Now there is onegreat question in which all the others come to a focus. and, asit were, sum themselves up. It is not-"What is your life 7"-but, "What shall we do with our lives 7" The quest forknowledge as it goes on through the ages takes the forms ofscience. Ifyou look into it closely you will find, I think, thatthe impulse that sustains it all-the hope that endures throughit all-v-is the hope of getting light on this great summaryquestion-"What shall we do with our life ?"

It is because we have a life to do something with, it isbecause we feel ourselves responsible for making the best useof it, that we are, or should be, so eager to find out all we canabout these other things, always in the hope that the light weget upon them will help us to solve the question how to uscour lives wisely and well. Now in regard to that, theunbeliever and the atheist are in Just the same boat with thebeliever and the theist- the believer in God. Mr. BertrandRussell with his powerful intellect is in. the same boat with the

A Hundred YearsTHE CHURCH IN JAPAN

by Peter Crump

TO THE STATISTICALLYminded, Japan occupies a similar

position on the other side of the worldto the British Isles on this. Both aremade up of densely populated islandsof roughly equal size lying each atone point within sight of a continent, and on similar latitudes. But it is thedifferences that most people areconscious of, .if you mention Japan.

Persons with oriental features, wearing kimonos and carryingflimsy parasols seen against abackground of open structures inwhich curved beams predominate, andbehind everything the well-knownoutline of Fujiyama, Japan's sacredmountain. Such is the picture thatJapan conjures up. Nor is this picturedispelled when we are reminded ofJapan's economic power and impor-tance as a nation in the competitiveand industrialised world in which welive-and Tokyo is now larger thanLondon!

Japan has reached this point ofindustrial growth in about a hundred

years. Previously she had been shutup in almost complete isolation. Butfrom the time Commodore Perry withan American fleet dropped anchor inJapanese waters, and forced her tohave dealings with 'foreigners', Japanhas been quick to learn and copy andapply western methods.

A hundred years ago also some-thing else happened: the Churchwent back to Japan. It had been fearand hate of Christianity which hadmade Japan lock her doors toforeigners two centuries previously.

YOUNG PEOPLE'S PAGE

Dear All of You,A little while ago, I started us off on

this "How Much Do You Know?"racket. We'd already had what do youknow about refugees? and what do youknow about Christian Aid Week?-bothof which were easy for me, because I'vebeen doing things with and for refugeesfor long enough to knowsomething about it.

Then we got to ChurchAssembly, and I realisedhow little I know aboutthe Church of England. You, if you stopped tothink about it, probablyfound that 'IOU didn'tknow all thln m u c Iteither.

And then we came toCanterbury Cathedral, fIand again I didn't knownearly as much as Iought to have done, and ••oJ •I found I had to do a f0'0"'"whole lot of sleuthing-not just asking people, and readingbooks, but finding which people to ask,and which books to read-and thatproved to be exciting too.

When I found myself faced with TheChurch in 'japan as this month's title,I knew this was going to be a "HowMuch Do You Know?" indeed-becauseI knew nothing! And I couldn't, as I didwith Canterbury, suggest that you wentto Japan to find out what you didn'tknow! I couldn't even do thatmyself. But I could makeenquiries. And I did.

At first, I wasn't very suc-cessful. But the fifth person Iasked knew someone who knewsomeone who could help-and ~he not only sent me a book,anq-- )lots of papers about the Diocese )of Kobe, and its. Bishop, bur h.esent my letter on to a friend ofhis, who also wrote to me andsent mean account of how theChurch in Japan came intobeing, and what has happenedto it.

I learned a very great deal, and one of the most important thingsthat I discovered was how very manypeople there are who are willing to giveup valuable time in order to help a com-plete stranger. The two people who wroteto me didn't have to-they could havesaid, "I haven't time. I've too much to

do. Why should I bother?" But theydidn't. Partly because they both love andcare about the Church in Japan, and areglad to talk about it, but partly, too, Ithink, because they love. Our Lord, andtry to follow Him Who was never toobusy or too tired to help anyone. Yousee? Things like that happen to us. We

have the chance to help someone, and there are possibly all sorts ofreasons why we could say No-andagainst them is one reason why wehaw to say Yes. Because if we aretrying to follow the Lord of Love,we can't refuse to help anyone.

Towards the end of the 16thcentury (this isn't going to be ahistory lesson) St. Francis' Xavier[Oak the good news of the Gospelto Japan. But there came bitterpersecution. Christianity was for-bidden, and men and women weremartyred for their Faith. But still, here and there, the good news waspassed on and kept alive, and theChurch of God never quite died.

Just a hundred years ago missionariesfrom the Church of England went toJapan, and that is one reason why we arethinking specially of our fellow-Christiansin Japan this year-the centenary year, and a special year too because of thecompletion and dedication of KobeCathedral.

It has not always been easy for theJapanese to be Christians. It is not easyfor anyone, and all of us have our own

particular difficulties. St.Francis Xavier said of theJapanese, "This peoplecan only be won by love"~nd that is true of mostof us. We are Christiansonly because God, forsome incredible and quiteunexplainable rea son, loves us. He loves us, andthe Japanese, and theRussians and the Ameri-cans and all the otherpeople in the world, withthe same wonderful never-letting-go love. Even whenwe do things that hurt

Him, He never stops Ioving us, eventhough He hates the things we do.

Most of us have a long way to gobefore we can start to get anywhere nearloving like that. But once we tty, we findit gets easier.

* CONFECTfONFRY SHEFFIELD

Archbishop of Canterbury. Why does Mr. Russell write thosebrilliant books? He writes them because he thlnks-s-becausehe wants to persuade us", that we shall make a better use ofOur lives by adopting his opinions than we shall by adopting theopinions of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The late Mr. H. G.Wens was quite open about the matter. Many years ago hewrote a book which bore this very title~"What Shall We DoWith Our Lives", And it was a summary of all the books thatMr. Wells had written. It was just the same with the lateBernard Shaw. Read his plays and you will find that all thetime Mr. Shaw was hammerinRaway at this question»- whatshall we do with our lives 1

I want to remind you how that great question isanswered by the Christian religion. It bids us place our livesin the hands of God through Christ-for Christ is our life. Hecame that we might have life and that we might have it moreabundantly. That was His promise, and He will never let usdown. This is what somebody called, "Life with a capital L".It is an exciting life. it is an exacting life; but it is asatisfying life. Christ will never lead us astray. He is ourGuide and He will not only point us in the right direction butHe will be our constant Companion on the journey. So myword to you is look to Him and let Him take charge of yourlife.

Murillo was a great painter, and one of his masterpieceswas placed in Seville Cathedral. It is one of the greatpaintings of the world. He was once in a monastery and one day, filled with an irresistible desire to paint he called for Canvas. They had no artist's canvas in a monastery. They searchedround and finally brought him some rough canvas, little betterthan sacking. That was all they had. but the painter took it,rough as is was, and, stretching it across a board, he paintedon it a great masterpiece.

Our lives are like rough canvas, sometimes, very roughcanvas, but Jesus will paint His likeness upon it - if w.e willlet Him. Your life-and mine, will only be worthwhile if wegive them to Christ.

Yours sincerely,

FREDERICK ADAMSON.

Church CarpetThe carpet which was installed in the church on All

Saints' Day last year has been greatly admired. It hascontributed much to the beauty, dignity and silence of thechurch. Since its appearance more weddings have taken placethan in any comparable period, that we can r~member. ,Ofcourse, the carpet couldn't possibly have anything to do withthat-nevertheless-very few of us have "the red carpet" putdown for us during our humdrum lives - it must at least bepleasant to have it on one's wedding. day 1

The members of our two ladies' organisations havedecided that, in order to complete the job, a similar carpetshould be laid on the floor of the Lady Chapel. Consequently, the work has been put in hand and the cost (approximately £45)will be defrayed by the ladies themselves.

Totley Vicarage, j

July, 1959My dear Friends,

This is the holiday season. I seem to have met a greatmany folks recently who are preparing to go on hoUday and tothem, one almost inevitably says-"well, have a good time".

I wonder if you have ever considered how curious aparadox it is that, while even a tiny child can tell us what thetime is, not the profoundest philosopher can tell us what Timeitself is. Time !-that brittle splintering thing which flies intofragments even as we think of it-vwhat an inscrutable mysteryit is! We sense its passing in our consciousness: we measureits progress with our delicately adjusted instruments; we markthe mementos of its flight and read the record that it leavesbehind: the one thing we cannot do is to define it. As St.Augustine said: "If nobody asks me what Time is. I know; ifI want to explain it to anyone who asks me, I am at a loss".

','What is Time 7" demands Longfellow, and he goes on-"The shadow on the dial, the striking of the dock therunning of the sand; months, years, centuries - these arc thearbitrary and outward signs, the measures of Time, not Timeitself". Modern attempts to state what Time is are ingeniousbut not very illuminating. Sometimes it is set forth byabstract mathematical formulae sometimes by the analysis ofdreams, sometimes as a fourth dimension added to space.Such efforts, however, only serve to accentuate our Ignorunce.

Yet to all of us Time is a self evident reality. Someonewent so far as to say that, "wherever anything IIVDIlI there is,open somewhere, a register in which Time is being Inscribed".What is that but an assertion of the fact that tlme Bnd life arctied up together in the most intimate manner, constantly Helingand reacting upon one another.

We may go further and say that tho whole universeSeems to be organised for measuring time. Nature is a hugeclockmaker's shop in which thousand, of time-pieces areforever ticking. Pulse-beats mark the pill1llng of the moments;the revolutions of the earth, the fleeting of LIllY and night; thephases of the moon, the moving of the months; the planet'saxial rotation, the march 01 tho y~nrs. Geology studies thewrinkles written by Time on carth'lI brow, Astronomy studiesthe clockwork of the star!. Arc:hReoloRY,peering about amongthe relics of the ancient pallt, truces the footprints of time inthe ages that are gone. I low strange that with so manyreminders of its reality men should still be baffled to defineTime!

The best we cnn do is to speak of it metaphorically, usuing the language of figure and fancy to state the elusive fllt'!.Time! We refer to It IlS a (ather, and we talk of "Old FatherTime", picturing a venerabl« personage with a long white heart!.

LIGHT AND SHADE-THAT·can be a pleasant thought in this

month of August. Bright sunshine,·warmth, indolence, rest. The shady'nook, the quiet place away from thenoise and tear and glare of modernlife. Both may represent the idealatmosphere we dream of and hopefor in the prime holiday period.Away with serious reflection and the, hard grind. On with the trivial andunimportant and carefree, So relax-ing, so refreshing, so pleasant.

That we would wish you.II< * II<

But holidays, vacations, quietness, the escape from the common roundand the daily task, give us the oppor-tunity-if we will-of t h ink i n goutward; of reflecting on affairs andevents which the pressure of normaldaily routine so often keeps from ourconsideration.

Here again there is light and shadein another guise. There are of coursemany shady things in our modemworld-some merely sordid, someterrible, some terrifying.

But for a moment let us considersome of the things of the light-thosethings which are hopeful and goodand encouraging. They are worth

thinkingabout, allthe more sobecausethey are sooften f o r -gotten.

L.--_ ...

YOUNG PEOPLE'S PAGE

Dear All of You,August; for most of us, means holidays.

For months now, probably, we've beenthinking about them, planning them, deciding where to go and what to do,looking forward . . . and now the time hasreally come, and we can do all the thingswe've been wanting to do for so long, andforget the possiblyrather dull thingswhich have been tak-ing up so much ofout time during therest of the year.

If we're goingaway, our friendswill almost certainlysay something like"Have a good time!"or "I hope you havea happy holiday"before we go, andthat always starts usoff with a nice feel-ing. And it's a veryrig h t thing, too, because the word "holiday" originallycame trom "Holy Day," and holidays arepart of God's plan for us, and He wantsus to be happy in them. You remember"His glory is in our happiness"?

God wants us to enjoy ourselves, andwhen we are happy it gives Him pleasuretoo. We know that wherever we happento be spending our holiday-in Jersey orJohn 0' Groats or Bournemouth or Black-pool or our own back garden, anywhere-He is there with us. And that adds to ourhappiness.

Some of you may remember, back inthe Winter, seeing a feature onB.B.C. Television about theOckenden Venture. That is a ;F-'"scheme w hie h provides apermanent home for refugeeswho are your sort of age-young people who would other-wise be living in camps. InApril of this year, Miss JoycePearce, who s tar ted thisOckenden scheme, said that theyhad more than a hundred boysand girls living here now, someat Waking and some nearDerby. That all began be-cause Miss Pearce and a friendof hers had the idea of inviting somechildren over to England for a holiday.

They were children who were living incamps, and they were to come for a holi-day and go back again. Gradually, the

idea grew.. and instead of coming f(lr, l!holiday and going back, the children whonow come, come to stay-but in the firstplace it was a holiday idea. A holiday for.children who had never been outside Iicamp, and who had never had a holidaybefore in their lives.

Most of us, these days, are used to go-ing away at least once in the year;lots of us go away for week-ends orfor a few days, quite often. It some-times does us a lot of good' to sit downand wonder what it feels like neverto have a holiday. Try it. Close youreyes, and forget the comfortable homeyou're in, and imagine that you areliving in a draughty, noisy, poorlyfurnished hut, and you aren't goingaway for a holiday because there's nomoney, and there's nowhere to go. Nowopen your eyes, and look around andsee how much you've got to thankGod for.

This is World Refugee Year, duringwhich we try to think, pray and workso that by the end of it all the people

who are now living in camps will be ableto live in proper houses leading normal, happy lives.

It is an enormous undertaking, and wecan't possibly succeed unless everyonehelps. You will know what your town orvillage is doing, and how you can besthelp. Wherever you live, whatever youare doing, however poor you are, you canhelp by thinking, caring and praying. Mostof us can find a way of giving, too. Somany things on holiday cost money-icecreams, sweets, deck-chairs, fun-fairs-youknow them. You've probably been saving;

Remember thechildren who aren'thaving a holiday, whoaren't finding it muchfun staying at homeeither, and see if youcan give up somethingso that you can sendthe money to helpthem. I'm not tellingyou what to do, orwhat to give - youwork that one OUtyourself! Have a goodholiday, don't get soexcited that you get

overtired and "scratchy," be nice to. bewith, have fun, be happy-and so glorifyGod, which is what He wants you to do.

Yours affectionately,GERALDINE MIDDLETON.

a scythe in one hand and an hour-glass in the other. And, ofcourse, Time isa father I From his loins springs all that is.Sometimes we picture Time as a thief. And, to be sure, Timeis a thief. How much he filches away! He steals the strengthfrom a man's muscles and the beauty from a woman's face.Often he robs us of our health and at last he takes away fromus everything that we have.

The poem of Ralph Hodgson reminds us of somethingwhich it is our highest wisdom never to forget-the fact thatTime is speeding by. Here is what he says-

"Time, you old Gypsyman. Will YOu not stay?PUl up your Ci.l1'i.lV:!11

Just for a day? "But nol Even as we ask the question, time has fled.

Why is it do you think, that while Time is so difficult todefine it is so hard to ignore '1 Must it not be because for usTime has a moral significance, because it has a vital bearing onour characters and because for our use or misuse of it. we shallhave to give account?

To everyone of us there is given at birth a certain amountof time. Our little lives may be, "a little gleam of time betweentwo eternities", yet in us they create at least the illusion ofduration-they seem to go on and on and it would seem to beone of the incidental proofs of our immortality that we treattime as though it wcre never to have an end. People talkabout "killing time"; they speak about "pastimes"; they behaveas though life hung so heavily on their hands that they hadmore time than they knew what to do with.

The New Testament takes a very different view of things. This is manifest in the life of Jesus Himself-for Him time wasthere to be used to the full while the opportunity lasted-untilHe announced that God's clock was striking-"Father the hour iscome". No man is truly alive who does not know the value oftime. The Psalmist prays-"so teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom". Notice, he says"our days". not our years.

Time is a trust. What are we doing with it? Are wefrittering it away, letting it slip through our fingers, squander-ing it in wanton waste? Or are we treasuring it, using it tothe maximum advantage, filling "the unforgiving minute withsixty seconds' worth of distance run?" If we are trifling withTime, depend upon it, an hour will come when we shall wishwith all our hearts that we hadn't, an hour when we shall becrying out for an "inch" of that precious thing which in ourfolly we have thrown away. We shall be like the improvidentexamination candidate who, having Jailed to answer all thequestions in the time allotted writes on his paper the despairingwords-"No Time" !-andis condemned by those inscrutablebeings we call "Examiners".

Paul counsels us to "redeem the time", Time cannotbe recalled, but it can be redeemed. Let us resolve that fromthis day forward every minuteshall be accounted for, everysplinter of Time spent to some purpose.

It is a sure instinct which makes us say-"Have a goodtime"! That does not necessarily mean lots of pin-tables andcandy-floss-it means what it says-"a good time I"

Yours sincerely,FREDERICK ADAMSON.

Totley Vicarage,September, 1959.

My dear Friends,The man who got hurt on the road from Jerusalem to

Jericho was a very foolish man. Everybody knew it was adangerous road infested with bandits-a road especiallydangerous to the traveller travelling alone. In the days of Jesusmost users of that dangerous road prefered to travel withothers for their mutual protection and safety. rather than makev. HUDSON, 162, Saslow Road, Totley

the journey alone. This man knew he was taking a risk, butperhaps he had done the same thing before and reached Jerichoin safety. "1 shall be all right", he said, as he dashed out ofjerusalem: "Other people may be frightened of the dangers ofthis road, but I can take care of myself". Not long after, hewas a casualty lying in the ditch by the side of the Jerusalemto Jericho road. He had lost all his possessions and he wouldhave lost his life as well if the Good Samaritan had not come onthe scene.

JOHN BONNERTo-day, danger lurks on the roads of Britain. Last year,

5,970 people were killed in road accidents: that is an averageof 16 road deaths every day. In the same period 293,797 peoplewere injured on our British roads; that is an average of 805people injured ever day. If the same number of people werekilled and injured every day in train accidents or in air crashes, there would soon be a great outcry and the public would boycottthe railway stations and the airports. There is an alarmingpublic apathy towards the Toll of the Road. Like the priestand the levite on the Jerusalem to Jericho road, the greatmajority of British people pass by on the other side and neverbother about the terrible number of road casualties, unless oneof the victims is someone near and dear to them. In a recentissue of "Safety News", the monthly journal of the RoyalSociety for the Prevention of Accidents, there is this bluntstatement-> "Throughout the road safety movement, it is feltthat 1959 will be a crisis year on the roads of Great Britainand that the number of accidents will rise still higher unlessthere is redoubled effort to raise the standard of road conduct".The figures for the August Bank Holiday lend dreadful pointto this statement.

One reason for the expected steep rise in road casualtiesfor 1959 is the great increase in the number of road vehiclesalready using our congested roads. The theme for the 1959Road Safety Campaign is "Be a Better Driver". This does notoverlook the duty of pedestrians to co-operate in makingBritain's roads less dangerous-c-rier should it overlook the dutyof local authorities and the Ministry of Transport to providebetter roads for us to be better drivers on 1 The main roadwhich runs the length of our own parish is a case in point. This road is a menace and perfect disgrace when one considersthe volume of heavy traffic it has to bear. It should, and itcould be wider and straighter! But when all is said and done, the main responsibility must rest upon the driver, since he orshe is in charge of a machine, which if misused can cause deathor injury to other people.

There is not a single motorist among us who caneonscientously lay his hand on his heart and claim to be theperfect driver. We have all made mistakes and by the Graceof God and by the skill and courtesy of someone else we hovegot away with it. So how can we define the term "Bettt'f

ONE OF THE MOSTbaffling problems

which every parish priesthas to face is the know-ledge that vast numbersof people outside theChurch both have and hold on to are~gious faith. And they cling to itWIth remarkable tenacity.

Of that vast number, a few maycome to the well-known festivals heldin our churches; for the rest of theyear they are absent. But the vastmajority never darken the doors of achurch, except for baptisms, weddingsand funerals.

We may blame them, scold themridicule their religious conceptions andpractices, And yet there it is, peopleaecepnng and holding .on to areligious faith who feel that theChurch helps them little, or not at allin their belief and religious under~standing.

The Great GulfI~ seems to me to be a question

which should provoke the mind ofan.y churchman to know why there isthis great gulf fixed which very fewof us seem able to span. And whichof us who belongs to the Church doesnot. know of many religious serviceswhich have not only failed to inspirebut left us rather bored, if notresentful?

What is the matter?.'Fhere are those who complain thatIt IS the structure of the service thatis at fault and therefore all sorts ofnew and improvised forms have beenand are being attempted. But ulti-mately the service must have somepattern and form.

The scr~pture readings are criticisedasof~enbeing unintelligible. It must beadmitted this bas justification.Never-theless, in one form or another thereading of the Scriptures must re~

The sermon also comes in for itsfaU- share of criticism. But it is cer-tainly not true in our day that clergyare slovenly or s1ipshodabout theirpreaching. They do their best. Canthey do no more?

l--- _._---------_._---~-G~R.ALDINE MtDbt.l!TON WrileS-

Dear All of You,Last September I had a list of the sub-

jects fur the magazine for each month, seas far back as that I knew that this monthwas going to be Church Music. I men-tioned it to a friend of mine, whose hus-band is an expert on Church music, andsaid perhaps he and I could talk about it,some time. She saidshe knew he would beonly too glad to-e-andsome months later, wespoke of it again.

In point of fact Inever did talk withher husband aboutChurch Music, and inpoint of fact this lettermay turn out to beabout something quitedifferent. Which onlygoes to show that itdoesn't do to be toosure that you knowwhat you're going to do!

I started this by thinking about Onm:hmusic and how little I knew about it,technically, because I. am a hopelessly un-musical sort of person really. I'm the sortof person who can say "1 don't knowmuch about music, but 1 know what Ilike!" and I like Byrd and Palestrina andThomas Tallis, V aug h anWilliams and Martin Shaw. Ilike most of what is in TheOxford Book of Carols, all that1 know of the University CarolBooks series (especially the oldNormandy tune to "Away in aManger") and lots of otherthings too, which I'm notmusical enough to mow byname.

I think the Gelineau settingof the Psalms is wonderful, andought to be much better knownthan it is, and I like it a lotbetter than the Milner /Bulloughsetting for Compline-----but that's just me.

A lot of people think that a lot of ourChurch music is dreary and depressing, which is all wrong if ours is a religion ofjoy. I thinkthey've got something there, too.

A few weeks ago 1 was listening to aservice on the radio which came from oneof our best-known London Churches(where the congregation certainly oughtto have known better) and one of thehymns was "Come let us join our cheer-ful songs with angels round the throne."

MEDICINENothing could have been less cheerfulthan either the tune they sang or thespeed at which they sang it.

It is said that people-and especiallyyoung people-are "put off religion" by

things like that. "It's so out of touch;we must have our church music aliveand exciting," contemporary composershave said.

I haven't heard the Fat herBeaumont Folk Mass yet, so I can'tcomment on it-some people find itis exciting, and some people find itquite the reverse. But I did see aprogramme on television with MichaelFlanders and Donald Swann, whichprofessed to be "exciting" churchmusic, and I found it horribly dull.

There are some good tunes beingwritten-new tunes to hymns wealready know, but it is dirficult to get

them well-known, (a) because they aren'tin the hymn books which most of us areusing, and (b) because some people don'tlike new tunes anyway, and prefer tostick to the old favourircs. Do any ofyou know a slightly "swung" tune to"Lord, thy word abideth .. ." which Ifirst heard a year or two ago, and liked

enormously, andhave 0 n 1y heardonce since.

The argumentthat people are "putoff" by poor musicought to be apretty sill y one.Religion is lovingGod, and goodmusic can some-times help us tofeci nearer to Him,and bad music (ordull music, whichis worse) can some-

times make it more difficult, but it doesn'talter the fact that God is, and that Heloves us, and that we love Him.

For most of us, it is not for us to saywhat kind of music we shall have in ourChurch. The most that we can do is toremember that we arc worshipping God,and to think about Him, even if the hymntune is one we happen to dislike-but itwas. written in good faith to the glory ofGod, and is being sung for just thatreason. Which can even make poor hymnsworthwhile.

Driver"? The new director-general of the Royal Society forthe Prevention of Accidents, has recently said-I<Good driversalways obey the Highway Code, but Better Drivers also allowfor those who fail to do so", The man who considers himselfto be a good driver and who doesn't 1 will no doubt be readyto blame "'the other fellow" if an accident occurs, but the BetterDriver will anticipate that some other driver or pedestrian willfall short of the standard needed to secure road safety and beready to meet such an emergency. In other words, the "BetterDriver" is one with imagination, one who foresees that a littlechild may forget his or her "kerb drill" or that some elderlyperson may suddenly stumble, or that the vehicle ahead mysuddenly stop, The "Better Driver" is one who tries tocultivate the art of defensive driving, that is, who assumesthere is danger unless he knows there is not, who does not takechances, who is calm and patient and always seems to haveplenty of time in hand. If a driver feels resentful towards otherdrivers or towards pedestrians - "How dare they get in myway ?"-he would be well advised to get out of his car at oncefor in that frame of mind he will almost certainly cause anaccident. If a driver cannot bear to see some other driver passhim on the road without having the urge to give chase, he too, should give up driving.

During the course of. a recent motoring holiday involvingover 1,400 miles of driving on English and Scottish roads 1hada long conversation with a road-traffic policeman on a busy 18miles stretch of road in the north of England. He told me thatthat road averaged one accident for every 250 yards of its lengthevery year! As a result of my conversation with him I ammore than ever convinced that many road accidents are causer'by such human failings as bad temper, pride, impatience andenvy of someone else. All these are faults of character forwhich no increase in technical competence can or ever willcompensate. The good driver-the really good driver is onewho knows he ought to be a better man in order to become a"Better Driver" and tries to do something about it. The RoadSafety Campaign deserves the full support of all men andwomen of goodwill who really care for the well-being of theirfellow-creatures,

It is a campaign aimed at the conscience, a campaignstressing that the driver has a moral duty not to endangersomebody else's life or limbs - it is a campaign based on theteaching of Jesus about showing love to our neighbours. TheGood Samaritan on Britain's roads is the driver or pedestrianwho seeks to make our roads less dangerous for others, whoseeks to prevent people from being killed or injured-who hasa conscience toward God about the awful toll of the road.

My dear Friends,In the course of his missionary wanderings St. Paul arrived

at a place called Lystra, Here, he performed a miracle of

healingwhich had the unlooked for result of persuading the peopleof Lystra that Paul was a god come down to them in the likenessof man. Poor Paul was faced by a pagan mob who tried veryhard to give to him what he wanted them to give to God.These people had no religious background in the Christiansense. They had no idea of ONE GOD or of the coming intothe world of the Son of God. When they found a man likePaul who could do mighty deeds they wanted to deify him andmake him a god! Faced with this unhappy situation Paulsought to convince them of their wrong by telling them of aLiving God who was the God, and he reminded that theyreceived from this God all the gifts whereby they lived. Hedirected their gaze to a God who cared for men and demon-strated His goodness by the wonderful works He performed insending the fruitful seasons.

Harvest then can be for us also the time when we takenotice of the fact of God's merciful work in human affairs, andof man's utter and complete dependence upon that God ofmercy. As we are surrounded this harvest time by everyevidence of God in orchard and garden and field, we should letit be for us a witness.

The Marstone Garage Ltd.You know, we have been brought up under a great

delusion. I suppose it is the result of being born into theartificial and materialistically minded world in which themajority of Western people live. A wilderness of bricks andmortar. It is a world in which everything is "laid on".When we rise in the morning and come down to breakfast it isso easy to make a cup of tea, but as soon as we touch the teaand pour it out a great system of dependency is brought intooperation. The tea was bought in a shop, but to get to theshop it had to come through a commercial system of supply.A system of transport involving the co-operation of labourers, clerks, dockers, and behind them - the work of planters andcoolies somewhere on the other side of the world. We stretchout and take a piece of bread and immediately behind thatpiece of bread there is a chain of dependence reaching rightback to a farmer somewhere who sowed a seed. But,ofcourse, this rarely occurs to us; it is "laid on", and this iii thegreat delusion for we come to think that this state of affairs isnatural and permanent.

By the Rev. CECIL RHODES, M.A.

The Harvest Festival is one of themost popular Services in the year.People like the cheerful rousinghymns . . the Church looking gaywith flowers and fruit . . and anyrate it's right to be thankful for ourdaily bread. But is this all there is toHarvest?

WHEN MEN KNEW LITTLEabout the science of the soil and

thehushandry of crops but knewmuch about the uncertainty of harvestand possible shortages, having com-pleted their feeble sowing they turnedto God and prayed for a good harvest.

It may be argued that they workedharder and prayed hardeJ'-andgotless. While we, understanding more,

work less and certainly pray less, yet fare far better-and there-fore more techniques, more skilland more knowledge are farmore valuable than more believ-ing and praying.

We Are Setter OffTrue it is that our forefathers

understood less than we .do.True it is that in nearly everyway we are far better off inliving, in comfort, in leisure.True our forefathers' lot was asimple and miserable one com-pared with ours.

But the gain is not so com-pletely one-sided;

One thing he understoodwhich gave him an attitude offortitude and strength andhomeliness and humility whichwe have so greatly lost and so

greatly reduced our stature in losing. He, because of the simplicity and theuncertainty of his lot, understood wellhis dependence on his friends andfamily in God.

That is something we have lost. Wethink we can stand on our own feet.We are left alone and forced to tryand be independent. We may evenlike to be independent and evenregard it as a very great virtue. Somesneer at the Christian faith and talkabout people being unable or unwill-ing to stand on their own feet andneeding a spiritual and mental prop.

Independence is net MaturityNow there is a place for indepen-

dence. But it is neither the final stageof growth nor the sign of full maturity-which many suppose it to be.

Independence is but a stage tomaturity-a child must learn to walk, and later grow away from parents ifhe is to be healthy and strong. Ayoung man must learn his trade or

GERALDINE MIDDLETON writes-

Dear All of You,June lst, when World Refugee Year

began, was a dreary, wet day in our partof the country, and the films about refu-gees on B.B.C. television (some of youprobably saw them) were, for the mostpart, rather grey and bleak too. But formost refugees, that is exactly what life is-grey and bleak and not very happy.

God is, and He is Love. He •loves them, just as He loves us, and it is sometimesdifficult to see iustwhy He allows somuch misery andhopelessness in thelives of those Heloves - especiallywhen so many ofthe people who arerefugees are s.omuch nicer thanmany of us, andthey have to put upwith so much morethan most of us ever have to; it justdoesn't add up.

Some time ago, I was talking aboutrefugees to a friend of mine, and I wastelling him that I wasn't doing very muchto help them just then because I was toosick. To which he promptly replied "Notas sick as they are!" And that was-andis-SO true.

I have remembered it so many timessince. I remembered it in June when thatdreary wet first day gave place to a heat-wave which brought with it, to me, a par-ticularly vicious kind of head-ache whichwouldn't let up, and I wasso sick I could hardly havecared less about anything. But I wasn't as sick as theywere. I could go to bed, andstay there in peace and quiet(more or less!) until I Wasbetter; I had a very gooddoctor and a chemist tosupply the drugs he pres-cribed; I had everything on myside to help me to get wen.

Most refugees haven't aquarter of what I have. AndI was complaining!

Well, Jet's be honest. Haven't you?Haven't you ever complained because lifewasn't going just the way you wanted?Someone else has a new bicycle and youhaven't. Someone else was chosen for theteam and you weren't, and you play muchbetter than he does. Someone else , , .you know it all, don't you?

IS YOUR MEDICINEGrumble, grumble, grumble. We all doit, at times, and we shouldn't, And, atheart, we know we shouldn't. We havegot so much to be thankful for. We knowthat when we go to bed tonight, most ofus anyway, we've got a bed to go to. Doyou know that when a refugee family, after years and years of waiting, is at last

given a flat or a house, it isempty, and they have no furni-ture because what they've beenusing is camp property and hasto be left behind. So they haveto sleep on the floor.

That can be fun fora nightor two, but it gets a bit weari-some after a little while. Andthere's no hopeof buying bedsbecause it costs so much to paythe rent on the house.

H you're reading this in acomfortable arm-chair, in front of ablazing fire, just stop a minute and thinkof the people your age who haven't everhad a proper home.

They don't complain, because theyhonestly don't know what they're missing. They can't imagine anything but life in abarrack hut or a cardboard shack. And sothey laugh sometimes, and play gamesand have fun, as young people do every-where. But they aren't living the sort oflives we live-ne-Dne could, in surround-ings like •that, in houses that aren'tweatherproof, without enough of the

necessities of life,III eta I on e the

can know a little ofthe answer. Godhas to allow tragedybecause lIe gaveman free-will, and

man sinned, and the refugees are living asthey are largely because of war, whichwas sin on a grand scale.

There is wisdom behind it too, becausewe have free-will too, and we can choosewhether we leave them in the kind ofstate they're in, or whether we'll do every-thing possible to help them to a. real life.Well, will we?

We realise, when we consider it, that we are utterlydependent upon our fellow men, but particularly do I want toemphasise that man himself would be helpless but for the factof a God who makes possible the harvest.

As this harvest witnesses once again to the faithfulnessof God, let us remember our utter dependence upon Him. Weshall.never assume a right and worthy relationship to God untilthe sight of the Harvest brings us to our knees and we see in allhumility that "the earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof".We have grown used to thinking of the evidence of God's lovebeing supremely revealed in Jesus. "God so loved the worldthat He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believethin Him should not perish but have everlasting life", is the basisof our faith, but Paul also reminds us that the goodness of Godis also revealed in His care for man. From the moment whenthe Garden of Eden was closed to the foot of man by theflaming sword of God's righteousness, and man went out intothe world to toil that he might live-from that moment Godhas never ceased to give us the security of the seasons. Of theworld it must be said, as it must be said of us as individuals, that we sin against Him, deny Him, disregard Him - but Godremains faithful-and harvest is a visible pledge of thatfaithfulness.

My dear Friends,Over a European frontier almost three years ago a

Hungarian family, "all in", worn to a shadow, made a last littlerun with the last bit of strength left in them and flung them-selves across that frontier into freedom. The man, bearded anddishevelled. sobbed out one sentence, three times ~ "We'vemade it! We've made it I We've made it I" We may wrapourselves up in the quiet and safety of this England of ours andtry to shut out that picture from our eyes, but it is somethingwhich has happened and, I fear, will happen, over and overagain in this twentieth century world.

ROAD,

Think of it: stretched out along the frontiers of theworld are thirty million refugees; in Europe alone over a millioneke out an existence while in Arab countries another million livein conditions of indescribable poverty and squalor-and everyday countless others arc being added to their number. With agentle sentiment we have heard that "there is no place likehome"; yet many of these have run away from their homes-itis because home has ceased to be home. Why do people leaveall that is sweet and dear to them 7 Wen, often it is becauseeverything has turned sour and bitter for them, back home.

from one country to another, but often it is because men wereborn to be free and they will not be shackled to a tyranny. There is an ancient word from Isaiah that speaks out withtwentieth century relevance: "They have made crooked paths, and whosoever walks in them knoweth no peace", Who canescape the relevancy of that word-how ominously familiar itall is! There are political arrangements and formulas ofGovernment that are crooked paths, and whomsoever walkethin them knoweth no peace.

Guy Fawkes and All SaintsWE START NOVEMBER WITH

a sense of dread; here IS winterfinally arrived, there will be fogs anddays will be shorter and we shallprobably start coughing in churchagain. So it is hardly surprising thatwe lookforward to our great Novem-ber festivals rather drearily; AllSaints with awkward extra services,Guy Fawkes with those dreadfullittle boys and appalling bangs, andRemembrance Sunday with its agonyof looking back.

But November has, after April and

December, the most triumphantChristian festival of all. The know-ledge that the saints have n01 onlyconquered death, but have, throughthe glory of their living" conqueredhuman life and sin as well.

Every Sunday we reaffirm our be-lief in OUf communion with the greatcompany of saints whorn we remem-ber now. Our own special familysaints and the splmldid IIlints whobelong to all the world are not re-mote spirits in outer space, but withus part of the whole militant fmilly

GERALDINE. MIDDLETON writes-Dear All of You,

How good are you at remembering?November seems to be very much amonth of remembering. When we areyoung we neverforget Guy Fawkes'day. I wonder, though, whether weremember what itcom m e morates ?Then there's Re-membrance SUIl-day, when we thinkof those who diedor who are stillsuffering because ofwar. That's a verygood time toremind ourselvesthat wars startbecause ordinarypeople like you and me don't always keepOur Lord's commandment to love ourneighbour as ourselves. By the time itdevelops into a war, it's much more com-plicated than that,af course, but that'sbasically how it begins-with lack of love!

But the month. begins with All Saints'Day, November Ist, when we rememberthe whole company of Heaven, theChurch of God throughout all ages, ofwhich we are a part.

We may feel that we aren't a very goodpart. We aren't a shining example to therest of the world. Perhaps we're not. Butit's worth remembering that often wearen't the best people to judgeof that, anyway. The main thing isthat we shall love God, and want todo what He wants us to do, comewhat-and if we fed we haven'tdone it very well, He. knows howmuch we wanted to do it, and Hewill help us to do better next time.If we ask Him. He will never forceanything on us, even His love.

I asked an American friend theother day why God didn't makesome move to solve a particularproblem which we were discussingand my friend said, almost surprisedthat I should have wondered, "He's agentleman!" And he went on to say thathe had known God to use every way pos-sible to come close to people, but he'dnever known Him to use force.

He told me a lot of other things-e-thingsabout his home in Texas, about hisfamily, '«bout the oil wells and the cow-boys (did you know that real-life cow-boys don't wear guns?-it's only the chil-

IS YOURdren who wear toyones, outside of amovie you just don'tsee guns; it's a toughlift', but they get bywithout shooting! ),about the sand-storms,which are rather likeour fogs, and the won-derful 5unsets, and theheat. And because heis a Methodist Minis-ter, and part of his jobis to deal with people'sproblems and to helpthem to find happiness- to find God, in

fact - we talked about those things too,and he told me lots of things about God,and about being happy. And I'm wonder-ing haw long I shall remember all of it.

Life gets very complicated for all of usat times. Usually the things we get in aflap about arc silly little things that don'treally matter. And we know they don't,but we can't stop ourselves getting in aflap-about them. And men we see every-thing out of focus, and even God seemsfar away and we can't find Him. He isn'tever far from us, but we think He is. MyAmerican friend has taught me the answerto that one. You'll find it in the Psalms.

"Be still, and know that Iam God." Just that. "Bestill." It's so simple mostpeople don't do it. We alltend to rush around likecrazy getting more andmore frantic while all thetime all we have to do isto stay still and let Godcome to us. And He will.Whatever else I forget ofall he told me, I'm goingto try and remember atleast that. Will you ttytoo? We all have things to

do, we all have to spend a great deal ofour time being busy. Being still doesn'tmean that you sit down and do noth-ing and wait for God while the washingup is waiting to be done. It means thatin all your busy-ness-and in all mine-we can stop being worried or edgy ormad inside, and we can be still whilewe are doing the things we have to do.It's true--I've proved it.

PersonalWe were sorry to learn of the death of Mrs. Laura

Crowther. Mrs. Crowther had been a sick woman for somelong time but one, who was quite determined to use her timeto the full for as long as she could and. perhaps, for that reason,we did not appreciate just how ill she was. She was a faithfulmember of the Church and an assiduous worker on its behalf.A lady of severely practical virtues, she was, like Martha of old,"a doer of the work", and her prowess at Church bazaars was, quite something, to behold. We shall miss her from ourfellowship and to Mr. Crowther we would extend our sinceresympathy in his unhappy bereavement.

AGENT FOR

DINKti\;ND CORGt ToYs.My dear Friends,

Once upon a time. so the story goes, preparations werebeing made for a great feast Things seemed to be going verywell. There was every indication that a great throng would beat the festive occasion. When everything was ready and thefeast was about to begin someone said, "but where is the guestof honour 7" And it appeared that in all the expensive andbusy preparations everybody had forgotten to invite the guestof honour ~

It is a parable of the kind of activity that characterisesmany people at this season of the year. There is ampleactivity; there is much busyness; there is a crowded timetable:there are festivities and feasts but the guest of honour has notbeen invited. And He is not there. At the very centre of allthis vital energy there is a tragic emptiness. an ironic absencewhere the guest of honour should have been. As I see it. thejob of the Church at this time is to ensure that our peopleinvite the Guest of Honour into their Christmas festivities sothat Jesus Christ gives meaning to the season in our church andin our community - in our homes and in our hearts, in ourindividual lives. . Otherwise we are simply going through anerve~racking routine for nothing. This is the tragedy ofwinter without Christmas.

There are far too many people to-day who have fallenvictims to a kind of modern profanity. These people are theprofane. The profane people are the people who are, as theword means literally, "outside the sanctuary", That is to say.they are the people who do not concern themselves withreverence for God. Their plight. the plight of the profane atChristmas time. is so obvious; for they are trying to substitutejoy without a Saviour for joy about a Saviour. Andsomehow their mirth really lacks any real merriment. It is akind of hollow thing, and yet how much you see of this kind ofcelebration at Christmas 1 The real reason for our mirth is aspiritual reason. The reason for mirth is Jesus' birth. Theobject of our mirth is a spiritual blessing. This is what makesUS joyous, that God at Christmas blesses us. as He does. in sucha wonderful way.

Sometimes we pay much more attention to the immediatepressures of life. the immediate distress of life, than we do tothe ultimate things. If we had the same sensitivity to oursoul's sickness that we have to our bodily sickness, howquickly we would hail the news of the coming of the Saviour!

Christmas might well mean for us u trunsformillillli of allour values-s-a thinking again of the thin)l,s that ure "kl'nal andrecognising in them the things that mUftt be rUI Iirs]. Forunless Chrisl is truly horn in 0111' heMl1i WI.' will lust haveanother winter without Chrislmns,

When The KingComes

An Advent Sermon once preachedby the late Bishop 1. H. Linton, awell known contributor to these pages.

EVERY DAY WE KNEEL ANDpray "Thy kingdom come"; what

do we mean? Sunday by Sunday westand up in church and say "Ibelieve . . . He shall come to judgethe quick and the dead." Again. whatdo we mean? Is it a fact that if somecarping critic were to ask us weshould feel stuck? I know what wecould mean .. "Thy kingdom come."

1. The Personal MeaningFirst, then, we could mean that we

want Jesus to be King in our ownlife, and in the lives of others whomwe contact. When we think. about it,we realise that it is not enough tocome. to God with our blunders andour sins and ask to be forgiven. Hewill forgive us. He will "save to theuttermost." We know that; we haveproved it. But there is more beyond.Accepting forgiveness is not enough,There must be loyal service as well.Jesus has a right to say to us, "Nowthat I have given you your freedom,I want also to be your King. I wantMy kingdom to come in your life,"

That would mean, among otherthings, we would fight on His sideagainst all selfishness, whether it be inour own life---personal selfishness-or social and national selfishness.

It means bringing our own lifeun~er Chr~st's rule, and working tobring all life under His rule too. AsKing, He has the rightto command;we have the duty to obey.

It means that our time, our money, our POWef$are all under His rule,

2. The Wider MeaningBut "Thy Kingdom come" has a

still wider significance. Christ spoke ofthe kingdom coming "upon earth."He said, "Look at that farmer sowinghis seed. It grows secretly. One day, before you realise it, you will See thegreen shoots appear, and by and bythe golden harvest." And He added,"The Kingdom is like that." And inth~t sense,.if we have eyes to see, theKingdom IS coming even now uponearth; the. age-long prayer is beinganswered in the world around us.

· 'This time last year I was writing toyou about getting ready for Christmas, and about the way most of us leave fartoo many things to be done at the lastminute, SO that by the time we get toChristmas Day half of us are much too·tired to enjoy anything at all,

As I was writing just that I was hopingthat for the first time in my life I wouldreally get organised inadvance so that Iwasn't rushing round likecrazy on Christmas Evedoing dozens of thingswhich ought to have beendone weeks before.

In spite of all my goodresolutions, ChristmasEve last year saw me inmore of a flap than ever!Which made me deter-mined that this yearthings would be different.tu1d· this year things will, in all !lrob-ability, have to be different, because if allgoes well I shall be spending this Christ-mas away from home, and getting readyfor Christmas at home can be hectic, butif you're going away you either have to dothings early or go mad I

Those of you who live in East Angliawill know-or know of-Leisron Abbey. The ruins date back to the fourteenthcentury and the house is part Tudor, partGeorgian and parr twentieth century, andit is quite one of the loveliest places Iknow.

Dear All of You,

IS YO;URthat if the Christmas Holiday Partyproved a success there would be anotherone, and if I couldn't be there last year, perhaps this year ...

It was very much a success, and bythe end of August this year thehouse was almost fully bookedfor the Christmas Holiday Party1959.

On the Application Form itsaid : "Once again we are open-ing the Abbey to guests wishingto join others for the true festi-val of Christmas: Services,Carols, MUSic, Games and allthat one associates with a real'Family' Christmas." At the

moment, I don't know very much moreabout the plans than that. But 1do knowthat whatever happens it will be a veryhappy, friendly, gay and.at the same timepeaceful time.

I stayed at Leiston Abbey thissummer, and met lots of interestingpeople, made all sorts of new discoveries, and found that it was a wonderful placeto learn to "be still" in-the sort ofthing I was talking about last month. The psalmist goes 00 "and i.now thatI am God."

Parish Magazine. As we approach the end of another year, may I, as

Editor and Secretary, thank all who have in any way contributedtowards the successful publication of the Parish Magazine during19591 A task which makes considerable inroads upon one'smental ingenuity and time has been made supportable only bythe faithful and diligent work of the magazine distributors. Tothem, to our advertisers and to our printers I extend my thanksfor their help and support in a task which is not so simple asit looks. Last, but by no means least, to all our subscriberswe would say "thank you" for your support and interest. Maywe ask all subscribers to pay for their 1960 magazines inadvance? The distributors will approach you to do this whenthey deliver the January edition. They will ask you for 4(- tocover the cost of twelve monthly copies which, after all, is onlythe price of twenty cigarettes l Please, co-operate with themin this respect by offering to pay your yearly subscription inadvance-it makes their job so much easier.
