Now that we have been operating in ourpresent manner for about 3 years perhapswe can tell you a little about Cherry tree.Wehave two pleasant houses just above theCheshire Home. Our aim is to provideaccommodation for up to 1 year for singlehomeless youngsters between the ages of 16and 21. We seek to provide them withsupport and advice in their search formore permanent accommodation and their ownindependence. The youngsters are referredto us by all kinds of Agencies and theseinclude Social Workers, Colleges, YouthTraining Scheme Counsellors, ProbationOfficers and Advice Centres. Our criteriafor accepting youngsters is firstly theirneed and their suitability for what wehave to offer, and then consideration forthe thousand and one reasons why they arein distress. We do make the point howeverthat w~ cannot accept youngsters withparticular problems that requireprofessional help. We seek to run twohomes which are as near as possible likeother peoples homes. We can callan 6staff and there are usually 17 youngsterswith us at any time.

Let us give you an example of a 16 yearold whom we recently took in. He wasliving in a barn in Totley and wasregularly attending a Youth TrainingScheme and trying hard to preserve whatpride he still had. He is now settlingdown very well and maturing with everyweek that passes. All of our residentshave sad stories t9 tell and we would notclaim for a moment that we always manageto put things right. Indeed, if we findthat we have accepted someone by mistakewhose social behaviour is more than we canhandl~ we take imm~diate steps todischarge that person. We are not, ofcourse, a reform hostel or a bail hostel.

You would be amazed at some of thedesperate situations which force theseyoungsters to turn to us for help.Sometimes the causes are of their ownmaking, but usually they are not. In 1990we helped 35 young people on their way andwe feel some pride in that achievement.WhiIs t they are with us we make it ourbusiness to see that they are gainfullyoccupied during the day. Currently 6 areon Youth Training Schemes, 3 at College, 3still adjusting to life at CheJ:'rytree andtherefore no t yet employed, 1 in a"proper" job, 2 in Employment Training. 1at School and 1 doing voluntary work. Youwill see that variety and activity are thekey notes. Most of the youngsters spentChristmas at Cherry tree with their friendsand that was a particularly happy andtraditional occasion.

JIM MeADIE~

It is with shock and sorrow that we hear,as we go to press wi~h this edition of theIndependent, of the sudden death of JimMcAdieon Thursday 7th February whil~ on abusiness visit to Ghana.

He, his wife Gill, and his three sons.Neil, Andrew and Stuart came to Sheffieldfrom Southport in 1977. Originally fromWick in northern Scotland, he and hisfamily were soon at home in Totleyenjoying the Derbyshire countryside andthe worship and fellowship of Dare &Totley Dnited Reformed Church. He becamean elder in the U.R.C. in 1980 and gavemuch of his spare time to his pastoraleldership an.d work among the young peopleat the Church.

His business visits abroad brought himface-ta-face with the problems of third-world countries, so it was understandablethat he put his ecumenical efforts intothe local arrangements for Christian Aidand for One World Week which is held atthe end of October each year. His visionand concern for the world came from hisChristian belief that all in the world ispart of God's creation - to be respectedand carefully and responsibly used for thebenefi t of all.

We, an the Independent, offer to Gill, tothe family and to the U.R.C. our thoughtsand sympathy at this time.

tlHe's the best centaurforward Totley hasever had!"

We would like to thank the residents ofTotley for their help and support duringthe past year. The items we have collectedfrom you are an invaluable part of yourhelp and the Christmas presents were muchappreciated. We wish you on behalf of ourresidents and staff a very happy NewYear.

TALES OF THE UNBELIEVABLE.

[here is such a wide range of subjects atthe various adult classes so that there isnow a very limited exCuse for eitherignorance or idleness. We are particularlyfortunate in having Abbeydale Hall righton our doorstep with a wide range ofsubjects to e.nhance our knowledge, It ',vasway back a.n the days when they had"1'lEtTlcul&tion" rather than "A Levels".':hA.t iTU,3 unhappy tutors tried to~~stall to an unwilling student the

in English. I did wonder if Ishould find that the French actuallyl:",de1.'stood their own language so, as a~;2.,a·c;:ing test, I tried one of thosew~istle stop tours which gives a few hoursin Paris at an unbelievable low price. Sohaving booked and armed with tickets, passport and, not least, a FrenchcEct.ionary I set off on a great adventure.

.i\, straightforward journey, down to Doverby coach, over t.he channel by ferry toCalais and onto the train to Paris. Thist~ip was in the off-season and there wererelatively few passengers and on the trainT mana.gedto find a compartment to myself. The overnight journey had been long andthe smooth motion of the train made onefeel decidedly sleepy. Suddenly t:-recompartment door opened and four elegantlydressed gentlemen came in two withrolled up umbrellas and briefcases, two"lith slightly curled moustaches. The two with bowler hats removed themcarefully and one of them said "Do youspeak French?" I did not think I shouldcommit myself beyond a careful "Oui". "Andyou are English, of course?" I repliedthat I was. He turned to his colleagues."lie are in luck, Gile3. Jean. "Of course" I managed to say.

He spread his papers and rapidly I L.'.I'':1ecfrom one to another, fluently exp Lain i a'gboth fact and text. (Ian would have beenproud of me, 1 thought! ) • They madecopious notes and finally they foldedtheir papers, closed their briefcases andwith a cautious "Remember"', they left thecompartment. I think that the exercise hadleft me exhausted and I dropped off againto awaken as the train pulled into theGare du Nord. I put my head out of thecarriage window trying to catch a glimpseof the diplomats. probably hastening for ataxi. I looked up and down the platformbut never saw them, I wonder where theywent?

PUZZLE 1CORNER

The answer to the puzzle in the FebruaryIndependent was:- 50, 7 and 7 •

There are only 2 solutions which give thesame sum and also a product of 2450. One·answer would give the ages as 50, 7 and 7••1The other answer would give 49, 10 and 5. i

If Prof A were 48 or younger this would!allow both solutions to be acceptable but Isince they a.greed that there was only onesolution it mUst be that Prof A is 49 andhis relatives are 50, 7 and 7.

Did you work that one out? Do tell us ifyou like these little puzzles. Here :LS

another one and we hope you like it.

This January saw the 17th anniversary ofthe Dare and Totley Luncheon Club and DayCentre which meets at the United ReformedChurch in Totley Brook Road. As this club, for the housebound, is run solely byvolunteers it is something of anachievement and all who have helped shouldbe proud of their efforts. But as theyears pass by so do some of the volunteersas their circumstances change. Once more Iam asking if anyone could share some timeon Tuesdays - either with our visitors ona monthly rota, or perhaps morenecessarily by cooking part of a mealevery six weeks. This would be plaincooking for a very appreciative group. For

I this club to. reach a 21st, 25th or •••••anniversary could mean help from you!IPlease contact:-

~around freezing for days. The long, hot SUimner seems aI myth. but the record s prove that it really did happen. Our hottest day was in August when it reached a grand 32C, 1~ C above last years highest. Western Park managed 34

I ~:~~::t:O,,"~~.O~O:~~·"~~~~;.c.t:o."'f.';a::r::gh~e.r;h:i;:::I applied to a good number of days in May and a few ini July. By contrast to this heat, the coldest night was -4i C in April (long term average for this month 3.9 G) withi 23 nights below freezing during the year. whereas! Western Park recorded a low of -1.8 C with 11 nights1 below freezing.

Despite the cry of drought, more rain was recorded duringthe year than the long term average (which is 808 mm).Western Park recorded 763 mm and Torley 866~ mm althoughI'JJl not all that sure if my melting of the snow duringthe blizzard in December gave me a correct reading, minebeing much lower than Western Park. 1989 produced 885 rom. There were 4 months with above average rainfall, (3 ofwhich were more than double the average) 6 with less thanaverage rainfall (2 were less than half the average), 1was average and December remains unsure. One day inJanuary produced over an inch of rain but October had thewett~st day with 1. 78 ins. The longest day (in June)produced 0.75 ins of rain with a temperature of 22 C!Anyone for a sauna? The driest periods were end April -beginning May no days) and end May when there werepossibly 14 days on the trot without rain. The highest wind recorded at Western Park for 1990 was inJanuary (76 mv p s h , - 24 m.p.h. more than last year).
