PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES NEXT WEEK

As you will know, Parent-Teacher Conferences are planned for Wednesday and

Thursday next week. The conferences are 15 minutes in duration and the details for

booking them are included in this Newsletter.

One of the reasons for a conference time of 15 minutes is to allow students from Year

5 and upwards to participate in the conferences with their parents. Involving the

children is a really important aspect of the reporting process as they are involved in

Page 4: KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441 ...kenakena.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Kenakena-School... · KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441, Paraparaumu Beach

conversations about their progress, achievement and next steps in their learning.

Sharing this information with their parents and their teachers plays an important part

in children recognising that they are also responsible for, and can make decisions

about, their learning. For Years 5 to 8 we believe it is essential that your children

participate. Please don’t let them talk you out of it!

Your children will receive their Report on Friday. Please bring this report to the Parent-

Teacher Conference next week.

Along with this newsletter you will also receive a document titled 2016 National

Standards Parent Info on Reporting to explain to you how the reporting of National

Education Standards links to your child’s progress in relation to the New Zealand

Curriculum.

While the conferences are taking place a bell will sound at 15 minute intervals to

signify the end of each timeframe. Please be respectful of those timetabled for the

next slot.

School will finish at 2pm next Wednesday and Thursday to allow conferences to get

under way at 2.15 and finish at 7pm.

THANK YOU

The teachers and ancillary staff at Kenakena School thank you for your cooperation

on Thursday last week, when we attended the paid union meeting at Levin to consider

the ramifications of the Minister of Education’s proposed ‘Global Budget’ funding

model for schools. The model would likely result in a cut of funding to schools, which

already have to fund-raise to make ends meet.

MANDARIN LESSONS

Children in Years 3 and 4 have had the opportunity to learn about China and the

Mandarin language in a programme offered to all Kapiti schools through the Confucius

Institute. Our students in Rooms 2 and 4 have been working with two university interns

from China, Huang and Chang, over the past two terms. This week Huang and Chang

demonstrated a Chinese Tea Ceremony.

NEW ENTRANT NUMBERS: LOOKING FORWARD TO 2017

It is important for us to monitor our future enrolments of five year olds as it assists us

with planning for teaching spaces and resources. If you have a child turning five who

has yet to enrol at Kenakena or if you have friends, relatives or colleagues who intend

to enrol their children here in the next two years, we would like to know so we can

record their children’s names on our enrolments list.

NEXT WEEK IS THE FINAL WEEK OF TERM 3. SCHOOL FINISHES AT 3.00PM AS

USUAL NEXT FRIDAY.

Gastroenteritis reminder from Regional Public Health The winter increase of viral illnesses causing diarrhoea and vomiting has occurred later than usual this year, with outbreaks being reported towards the end of August and beginning of September. This is a reminder about the need for children and staff who are sick with diarrhoea and vomiting to stay at home until 48 hours after the diarrhoea or vomiting has stopped; and to encourage good hand washing and drying. More information on what to do to stop the spread of viral illnesses can be found attached on www.rph.org.nz (Public Health Topics > Foodborne Illness > Gastroenteritis pamphlet).

TIPS FOR PARENTS

Apologising to your kids

Page 8: KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441 ...kenakena.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/Kenakena-School... · KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441, Paraparaumu Beach

Now some parents refuse to apologise to their kids because they think they will lose

their kids’ respect – wrong! The opposite is true. Our kids will forgive us almost

anything, except hypocrisy. They know we’re not perfect. Our kids will eventually

sniff out all our faults – and so we may as well own up to them.

“Sorry about that telling off, kids. I wasn’t very happy about that mess you made, but

you didn’t deserve that much of a growling. I was just being a bit of a grump.” “That’s

all right, Dad, we’re used to it.” And it’s forgotten and blows out the window. If we

don’t back down, there is a real risk of that offence festering away and into real

resentment, a chip on their shoulder that could really stink up the relationship.

Sometimes it’s right to back down and apologise to our kids. Don’t let you anger and

pride rob you of a close relationship.
