Children from Kowhai Syndicate learn to use the Public Library resources as part of

their bus trip to the Library and Police Station last week

If you have a winter sports uniform outstanding or a school library book not returned,

please get this sorted as soon as possible so we can complete our end-of-year

organisation.

CHANGE OF STAFFING FOR 2017

Mrs Lee Norris, who has been on leave this year has made the decision to resign from

her teaching position at Kenakena School for Family Reasons. Lee’s place will be

taken by Ms Rachel Moore, who is currently teaching at Newtown School in Wellington.

Rachel is an experienced teacher, who comes with a wide range of strengths

compatible with our approach to teaching. She is also Reading Recovery trained,

which is a bonus for our early literacy programme.

We recently produced a video to promote our school internationally. It’s also a great

celebratory video for our community to share with friends and relatives all over the

world to show our beautiful school in our stunning coastal surroundings.

EMERGENCY UPDATES

Due to the recent earthquakes we need to go over the procedures and reminders of

what happens during these times.

If an earthquake happens while we are at school we follow the school procedures,

which include drop, cover, and hold.

If we need to evacuate the school due to the threat of a tsunami we move immediately

to our nearest high ground at 30 Arnold Grove.

It is VERY important to ensure the school office has up to date contact information for

you and for people that we can contact in an emergency, if you are unavailable. Please

email the school office on [email protected] or call on 2984011 if your

details need updating.

There are several ways that you can receive updates from the school-

Allow your phone to receive text alerts by texting ‘follow kenaschool’ to 8987

Check your emails

Check the school Facebook page

To inform the school that your child will not be attending school please do one of the

following-

follow the Report an Absence link from the school website

www.kenakena.school.nz

text an absence to 027 7818315

email the school on [email protected]

On Monday November 14 we had 302 students absent. 40 students were reported

absent via email, 36 by text and we received around 50 phone calls. It is so important

that we know that your child is safe. Please use one of the above methods to inform

us when your child is away. Freeing up the school telephone is most important,

especially in an emergency. On Monday, contacting the families of the 176 non-notified

absent students by telephone was unrealistic for our office staff as it would have taken

over 8 hours, so please let us know if your child is going to be absent from school.

2017 ENROLMENTS

We are in the process of planning for 2017. If you have a child starting school as a

five-year-old next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school

office to let us know.

KAIKOURA EARTHQUAKE FUNDRAISER

“ On November the 14th, a major 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck New Zealand

with major damage to several South Island towns and Wellington. Waiau was

particularly hard hit with severe damage to many houses, infrastructure and

local businesses.

The local swimming pool which doubles as the community and school pool was completely destroyed. This was a major blow to the village as due to Waiau’s isolation, there are no other swimming options.

Waiau needs something positive to think about and look forward to, in particular the children who have been really struggling since the first quake and the continuing aftershocks.”

Year 7/8 students are organising a school-wide fundraiser to help Waiau School in

Kaikoura. They will hold a bakesale outside Rm 19 next Tuesday 6th December at

Morning Tea. Prices will be between $2 and $5. Please support this worthy cause.

The Brochure for Issue #8 should have come home with your child/ren this

week. The closing date for this Issue is 12 Noon, Monday 5 December. This is to

ensure that we receive the order before the end of term. Unfortunately no late orders

will be accepted.

For each order Kenakena School will receive 20% in value to obtain books and

resources for our school.

The simplest way to make an order is to use the Book Club Loop Application

TIPS FOR PARENTS

Take control of Christmas

We often get overstuffed on Christmas day, but sometimes the day itself gets

overstuffed as well. Too much travel, too much preparation, too many meals – where

did the fun go? Anything you can do to reduce stress in your life will be a benefit to

your relationships with your partner and kids. Do you need to provide a Christmas

meal with 20 different items needing hours of preparation, when you could achieve

the same sense of satisfaction from only five?

Who you choose to spend Christmas day with is also a big sense of stress. It’s

lovely when your parents give you something – except when that something is guilt.

But, honestly, you can still show your parents love and respect without having to

give in to each one of their plans and whims at Christmas. Do you really need to

shuffle between both sets of grandparents on Christmas day? Can you spread your

family functions out over the holidays rather than just one crazy day? Take control of

Page 10: KENAKENA SCHOOL 12 Donovan Road, P.O. Box 1441 ...kenakena.school.nz/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/...absent via email, 36 by text and we received around 50 phone calls. It is so important

your Christmas. It’s not too late – you decide how you want to spend Christmas,

then stick to it.

Everyone’s Adventure wants to make outdoor adventures free for as many Wellington families as possible this summer. You can help them reach the target buy booking a fun kayak or bike experience for your family (child size available!), or buying vouchers for family and friends for Christmas.

Here’s how it works:

1. Make a booking at The Boatshed - Days Bay, The Bike Shed - Pencarrow, or Cycle Rimutaka, or buy a voucher for someone else to enjoy an adventure. Every dollar spent there counts - including drinks, ice creams and snacks.

2. The owners have calculated how much it’ll cost to safely operate those businesses over summer, and pay staff - it’s $300k.

3. Once the business' $300k summer costs are reached through your purchases, gear hire is FREE for everyone, for the rest of summer - til Easter weekend 2017.

If Wellington families get behind Everyone’s Adventure now, adventures will be free by the end of

the summer holidays!
