Thursday, 17th November 2016 Term 4 Week 6 Dear Parents and Caregivers, He mihi tenei kia koutou nga matua, me nga kaitiaki o a tatou tamariki. Tena koutou katoa What a week! Earthquakes, floods, disruption and commotion!

Firstly, I would like to reiterate the post-earthquake decision-making process around

opening Kenakena School on Monday. I spoke with Kapiti Coast District Council

emergency management at 6am. The information update I got from them was that

there was no Tsunami Alert at that time. I met my school property manager on-site to

check our buildings were safe and then made the decision that Kenakena School

would open as usual. Communication was then sent to our school community via the

newsletter email list and by text alert at around 7.15am.

Following an overnight incident such as this, I will always endeavour to have

information out to our community by 7.30am so families are well informed and can

    make arrangements accordingly.

With Tuesday’s flooding, regular contact with KCDC allowed us to ascertain the

situation in relation to our school.

The message to the Kenakena School community is that, we will inform you, as soon

as possible, of any circumstances that impact on the ability of our school to open or

remain open in an emergency or post-emergency situation.

I am also aware that there can be a lot of misinformation circulating through social

media. The best thing you can do is rely on us to get timely information from official

    sources and act upon it.

    EMERGENCY UPDATES

Due to the earthquakes this week we need to go over the procedures and reminders

of what happens during these times.

If an earthquake happens while we are at school we follow the school procedures,

which include drop, cover, and hold.

If we need to evacuate the school due to the threat of a tsunami we move immediately

to our nearest high ground at 30 Arnold Grove.

    mailto:[email protected]:[email protected]://www.kenakena.school.nz/

  • It is VERY important to ensure the school office has up to date contact information for

you and for people that we can contact in an emergency, if you are unavailable. Please

email the school office on [email protected] or call on 2984011 if your

    details need updating.

There are several ways that you can receive updates from the school-

Allow your phone to receive text alerts by texting ‘follow kenaschool’ to 8987

    Check your emails

    Check the school Facebook page

To inform the school that your child will not be attending school please do one of the

    following-

follow the Report an Absence link from the school website

    www.kenakena.school.nz

text an absence to 027 7818315

email the school on [email protected]

On Monday November 14 we had 302 students absent. 40 students were reported

absent via email, 36 by text and we received around 50 phone calls. It is so important

that we know that your child is safe. Please use one of the above methods to inform

us when your child is away. Freeing up the school telephone is most important,

especially in an emergency. On Monday, contacting the families of the 176 non-notified

absent students by telephone was unrealistic for our office staff as it would have taken

over 8 hours, so please let us know if your child is going to be absent from school.

    2017 CLASSROOM ALLOCATION

We are at the tail-end of our process for determining 2017 class placements for your

children. This is a huge process that gives consideration to social grouping,

friendships, behaviour management, special needs, mentoring needs and academic

requirements. Consideration has also been given to class sizes, teaching team

structure and roll growth provisions. As we have had a number of new families enrol

children for 2017 as well as families leaving the area, we have had to regularly

reconsider configurations we thought we had settled and will continue to do so as we

receive new information about enrolments and withdrawals.

Once class lists have been finalised they will not be altered. Notification of your

children’s classroom placement for next year will be sent home on Friday, December

    16.

    TEACHER ONLY DAY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Thanks for your co-operation with regard to Teacher Only Day last week. Your

children’s teachers spent a very valuable day reviewing this year’s programmes and

planning for 2017. Teacher professional development and constant review of the

programmes we implement keeps us sharp and focussed as a good school.

  • 2017 ENROLMENTS

We are in the process of planning for 2017. If you have a child starting school as a

five-year-old next year and haven’t yet informed us, please contact Lynda at the school

    office to let us know.

If you have friends, workmates, relatives or acquaintances who are intending to enrol

their children at Kenakena in 2017, please encourage them to get in touch.

Do You Have A Trailer? The Festival of Fun committee, along with volunteers have worked really hard to

return all of the borrowed items to their owners. We now have a few larger items that

need to be returned to our lockup in Paraparaumu, but need parent help with a caged

trailer. Is there any parents/caregivers that have a trailer to assist us on a Thursday

  • or Friday in the next few weeks? It should only take 1 load. Please contact the

    office.

    MELBOURNE EXCHANGE 2016

Thank you so much to the families that hosted the Caulfield Junior College students

for the 8 days they were here visiting New Zealand. The students were very well

looked after and were so happy and full of praise for the experiences they had. It is

not always easy having an extra person in your household and can be challenging at

times. I really appreciate your part in making this year’s exchange a resounding

    success.

    TIPS FOR PARENTS

    Helping children deal with trauma

Traumatic experiences can trigger a very wide range of symptoms for kids.

Because they have an underdeveloped ‘emotional vocabulary’, children sometimes express

their emotions in immature and inappropriate ways. Parents need extra patience and love

for kids at this time, which can be especially hard if our own emotions are still raw and

    stressed.

After this North Canterbury earthquake, kids may be fearful of more earthquakes and of

being left alone. They may worry about their safety and their future welfare. They may also

be worried about other people and pets, and even worried about you, especially if they

have seen you upset. After a big shock or a prolonged period of stress, children may be

easily triggered into a fearful state.

Your children may never have experienced such strong or dismaying emotions before.

Repeatedly reassure them that big feelings are understandable after a scary experience,

but the feelings will pass. Where your insight will be especially valuable is helping them

label their emotions – “You normally don’t yell and act angry like this. I think it’s because of

the upset from the earthquake. It stirs us all up.” “You’re feeling sick… and we will certainly

take you to the doctor if it doesn’t get better soon, but sometimes people feel really sick

after a fright like the one we have had”.

    • A key insight – emotions tell us about what has been, not about what will be

    • Emotions cannot be commanded to go

    • Emotions don’t always tell us the truth

    • Emotional upsets take time to get over

    • Reassure children – things like bad dreams are normal and go away

    • Talking about how they are feeling helps

    • Assure them not to feel ashamed of their emotions, especially when talking to

    parents
