Sitting under the peach tree with grandma while she crochets, listening to city bus sounds, smelling flowers, making clover necklaces, putting on plays, taking a fish off the hook, flipping a canoe, singing around a campfire, watching fireworks, selling lemonade, going to the zoo, riding a horse, listening to Cardinals baseball on the radio, battling mosquitoes, catching fireflies, swimming in pools, rivers, and lakes, water skiing at Lake O, eating barbeque pork steaks, applying suntan lotion, boating on the Mississippi River. I've created some of my most favorite memories during the summer months. June and July are definitely two of my favorite months of the year. Blue skies, warm weather, spring rains are behind us and Mother Nature has finally let us back outside to begin a new chapter of memories. “It was Jean Baptiste Carpeaux who pushed me over the edge,” says Abraham Mohler, about his decision long ago to become a sculptor. Mohler attended Arizona State University where he was a walk-on on the baseball team. While there, he took an art history class. When studying Carpeaux, a mid-nineteenth century French sculptor, along with Michelangelo, Bernini and other notable sculptors, he began to love sculptures, especially those made of stone. “Dropping the baseball bat and picking up the hammer and chisel was a natural progression. Gravitating toward sculpture had a lot to to do with my being an athlete. It is a very physically demanding art—especially sculpting in stone,” he says. Mohler uses a chisel and hammer, the same tools used by Carpeaux

and other sculptors thousands of years ago. however, today he adds modern equipment to his toolbox, such as a pneumatic hammer, which saves wear and tear on the body, and an electric grinder with diamond abrasives, for faster removal of waste. Mohler's favorite medium is Italian or portuguese marble. “I love marble because the visual quality is so rich and subtle,” Mohler says. “It has a lot to do with light and shadow. What fascinates me is the way light falls over a form, especially the human form. the question I'm always asking is how does the shape, size and color of the stone respond to the form I'm creating?” Mohler works in a converted monument shop. It includes a large back doorway for offloading materials, and a giant hoist system to be

able to move heavy stones and finished works. Part of the studio includes space for a small gallery. “It's industrial enough that I don't worry about the dust and mess, yet is warm and inviting and easy to sweep up for shows.” Along with creating, Mohler teaches the art of sculpture. He believes in the atelier-style of education where students apprentice with a master teacher, and currently has several students. He also teaches eight-week classes in sculpting and drawing. Next year Mohler will install a piece at Mercy Hospital in their memorial garden, but current places to view his work include the Ober Anderson Gallery in Kirkwood and the Missouri Botanical Garden, where his sundial is a permanent piece. He also holds occasional shows at his studio. Mohler appreciates being able to do art for a living. “What gives me the most pleasure is the lifestyle. Every time I enter my studio I know I've got eight hours to play, to create, to bring a recognizable form out of a lump of material,” he humbly exclaims. Like many artists, Mohler hopes his art will stand up to the test of time. “I want my art to be viewed in the context of art over the ages,” he explains. “I want it to be compared as much to contemporary art that uses the latest techniques as to the works of a thousand years ago.” See www.stlouishomesmag.com for resources.

First introduced in Austria in 1983, natural swimming ponds have grown in popularity over the past couple of decades. Now taking off in the U.S., these cool pools are safe and sustainable using no chemicals.

SLHL: What is a natural swimming pond?Todd: A natural swimming pond (NSP) is a body of water created to combine the beauty of nature with the benefits of a refreshing swim in the heat of summer. The size and shape are as vast as the variety of plants that can be grown in the water. The water is cleaned and purified by the combination of plants and microorganisms.

SLHL: How is a natural swimming pond constructed?Todd: Natural swimming ponds can be constructed as a conventional pool or more like a natural pond using a rubber liner and large boulders. It seems to me there are no hard lines in nature, and large boulders lend themselves well to the construction of a NSP. NSPs are separated into two zones… the regeneration zone and the swimming zone. The regeneration zone is the area of the pond where plants are growing, consuming nutrients and impurities from the water. When healthy populations of plants are growing, they consume the available nitrogen necessary for algae growth and this starves out the algae. Typically the swimming zone is separate from the regeneration zone. However, strategically placing specific plant varieties in the swimming area can easily merge with the regeneration zone, creating a more “one with nature” experience.

SLHL: Why is the water safe for swimming?Todd: The water is safe for swimming because it is filtered through


the roots of plants where nutrients are absorbed and converted into biomass. An established pond develops a patina, which is a colony of invertebrates and microorganisms that consume harmful bacteria. An ultra-violet sterilizer can also be used to eradicate free-floating, harmful bacteria. In addition to plant roots and the patina, beneficial bacteria are colonized in the planting areas as well as in a large bio filter. The beneficial bacteria are highly effective in water purification.

SLHL: What types of plants are best for an NSP?Todd: There are three types of plants used: submerged (oxygenators), floating land plants (lilies) and marginal plants. Each type of plant has many varieties and all serve important functions in filtration.

SLHL: How are NSPs eco-friendly?Todd: Natural swimming ponds are very eco-friendly. Water is a key ingredient to life. There is nothing like pure, chemical-free water to encourage a wide diversity of life. The larger the plant variety the larger the bio-diversity it will bring.

SLHL: Can a traditional pool be converted to a NSP?Todd: We have converted two conventional gunnite pools to NSPs by introducing a large regeneration zone full of plants and gravel. The water is pulled from the pond and pushed up through the gravel and the roots, then flows back to the pool through a stream and waterfall. Both of the projects have introduced Koi fish and enjoy clear, chemical-free water.

With seating for only 34 diners, I Fratellini is an oh-so-tiny slice of Italy in Clayton. “I try to make it as authentic as possible,” says owner Zoë Robinson. “It’s not an Italian-American restaurant. True Italian food is simple, and it’s based on ingredients.” Although I Fratellini has been around for a dozen years, many St. Louisans are unaware that it exists. “People drive by here for years and don’t realize that we’re here,” Robinson says. “I think our regulars don’t share this with a lot of people.” Reservations are highly recommended. Otherwise, patrons can call half an hour before they arrive and ask to be put on the waiting list.

The atmosphere during dinner is romantic but lively, with low lights, candles and flowers on the tables. Like the menu, the wine list is Italian, and Robinson has been crafting aperitifs made with Italian spirits. She combines Cynar, an artichoke-based liqueur, with club soda and orange. “It’s just really herbal and bitter and divine,” she says. To make another favorite, she mixes Aperol (“a lot more approachable than Campari,” which it resembles) with club soda and prosecco. “That’s a great summer drink,” she says I Fratellini, Italian for “the brothers,” is named for Robinson’s sons Spencer Robinson, 21, and Eli Robinson, 19. They also are the namesakes

for the even tinier bar and restaurant across the street, Bar Les Frères, which offers French food and drink. In September, she plans to expand Bar Les Frères into an adjacent storefront, providing additional seating and space for private parties. Chef Ny Vongsaly oversees the cooking at I Fratellini, Bar Les Frères and Robinson’s third restaurant, BoBo Noodle House, which features Pan-Asian fare in a quick-service atmosphere. • Grilled Zucchini Carpaccio: Ultra-thin slices of zucchini are brushed with olive oil and rubbed with garlic, then quickly grilled. Shaved Parmigiano Reggiano, a splash of lemon juice, more olive oil and a dusting of cracked black pepper are the finishing touches. “It’s just super delicious,” Robinson says. “It’s been on our menu since day one.”

• Lobster Raviolo: Three-inch rounds of homemade pasta encase a filling of lobster meat and ricotta cheese. The ravioli are bathed in a lemon-butter sauce, and thin shreds of basil top the dish. At the restaurant, the ravioli can be enjoyed as an appetizer, a pasta course or an entrée.

I have made my home in the cultural hub of the city in the Central West End, minutes from shops, restaurants and the famed Forest Park. While my inhabitants have come and gone, my core and structure have remained intact. Sure, owners have nipped and tucked me over the years, but isn’t everyone always in need of a little paint and personality? And sure, I’ve grown in size, but who doesn’t add on a few extra rooms in 105 years. What matters is that my bones are intact, and each of my owners has taken great care to preserve me as best as possible. I arrived on the St. Louis scene four years after the city hosted the World’s Fair. Notable St. Louis architect Louis LeBeaume, who was part of the design staff for the World’s Fair, and his firm Mariner & LaBeaume designed me. Mariner & LeBeaume were known for building homes that were historic yet modern for their time period. Other well known LaBeaume designs include the Kiel Auditorium, the Downtown YMCA

and much of Lindenwood University. Designed in a neo-Georgian style, LaBeaume sought to create me as a home with a symmetrical, rectangular layout. My brick façade, which has been tuck-pointed through the years, is characteristic of my neo-Georgian style. I’m topped off with a slate tile roof, which was replaced but matched my original appearance. Throughout my 105 years, I have had the pleasure of being the home to six different families. My walls hold many memories, secrets and stories of St. Louisans pasts. My fourth family upgraded all of my systems so I could function more effectively. They also expanded the kitchen and gave me new windows, which help them better enjoy the sceneic view I provide of the yard. Despite the upgrades and changes I have undergone, my owners have retained my original floors, doors, hardware, staircase, windows and the mirror in my foyer. These retained elements add to my historic charm.

My current owners cherish my city location. My location allows them to walk practically everywhere… to restaurants, dry cleaning, doctor appointments, the movie theater, etc. They thrive off of the vibrancy you experience in the city. I always hear them praising the diversity they feel in the neighborhood and how much all of our neighbors also embrace the city mentality. City living not only provides them tangible benefits, but the sounds of the city provide them with a connection to their town that you don’t always feel in the suburbs. Our yard and home is constantly filled with the sounds of races in the park, music festivals and of course the daily traffic that keeps the city operating. Because of their deep appreciation of the city, my current owners have filled me with furnishings and accessories they found right in and just outside of our neighborhood. Choosing to shop at such places as Philip Slein Gallery, SuttonWood Antiques, Halbert Rugs, Brewington Interiors and Centro, to name a few, because of their unique selection, my owners

sought to liven me up with things from around the world and the country. “These shops have things you don’t typically see in St. Louis,” my owner says. “We want to support city businesses. The city thrives by using local businesses.” I was in fairly good shape when my present owners bought me, but they have refreshed my appearance and made me their own. The biggest change was not my inside appearance, but my outdoor look. Previous owners had my landscape very natural and full. My current owners appreciate a more tailored look. They removed most of my existing landscape and replaced it with well-trimmed bushes and shrubs. Tehandon Landscaping maintains my manicured look all year long. In addition to a new look, my owners also enhanced my outdoor livability by adding a rectangular pool by Pool Specialists, as well as a pergola and patio off my sun porch. Mainline Architects designed the pool, pergola and landscape, while W.T. Bequette Construction and Matrix

Construction built the pergola and patio, respectively. My outdoor living area is the ideal place to beat the St. Louis summers. Whether taking a dip in the pool or relaxing in the shade of the pergola, my owners love being outside. The calming sounds of water from the fountains on each of my patios only enhance their outdoor experience. Heading back indoors, my owners painted and polished me up to better fit their personal style. In the kitchen, previous owners had spruced up my guts by replacing my cabinets, and windows and replacing the original floor with varied sized tiles in gray. With the goal to create an updated yet classic black and white kitchen, my current owners worked with Voss Spray Painting Co. to have my lower cabinets painted a soft white to match my uppers. Previously, my upper cabinets were white and my lower cabinets were a cherry wood. The result is a light and airy kitchen with lots of natural light spilling across the floors and countertops.

Black soapstone with creamy white veins from Stone Fabricators replaced the existing green tops. One of my owner’s favorite additions to the kitchen is the soapstone cook top backsplash. The pop of black against the stainless steel hood and appliances really makes a dramatic statement. My off-white vitrolite backsplash is original to the home. Working with Vitrolite Specialists, my owners took great care to preserve me as they renovated the kitchen space. An eat-in breakfast area was previously part of the back porch where daily ice and refrigerated deliveries were dropped off. The quaint dining area includes a built-in bench covered in natural beige fabric. Opposite the breakfast area is a built-in window seat, which provides the perfect view into the backyard pool area. The window seat is the ideal place to curl up with a cup of coffee and a good book. A cleverly placed butler’s pantry divides the kitchen and the dining room and houses my owner's serving pieces. spaces, a custom door matching my other doors was created to close off the dining room. By removing a built-in bookcase unoriginal to the home, a bay window could be opened up to provide natural light and another quaint view of the yard. The beige walls are offset by a slightly deeper beige ceiling, which the owner intended to make the space “sparkle.” White trim and a white mantel pop against the walls. A clever idea my owner had was to place a marble top on the radiators on the first level of the home. The dining space opens directly into the living room, which makes my layout practical for entertaining. My living room walls were previously painted a pale yellow. By changing my color to a soft white, my rich wood trim and floors really shine. My floors were previously finished in a blonde tone, but my current owners wanted something more sumptuous, so they had them stained darker. You know I’ve been around for a long time when my

owners were told my floors could not be stained anymore because the wood had been stripped nearly to the core. Unique and beautiful rugs by Halbert Rugs frock my rich wood boards. I don’t like to be covered up, so all of my owners have forgone window treatments. Who would want to cover up the beauty of my intricate woodwork and trim? My owners love the natural light that spills into every room of the home. Throughout my 105 years, each of my owners has taken great care to preserve and never compromise any of my original details. My current owner has been very cognizant of updating aspects of the home, while still keeping my historic value. Their care and attention to detail is why I have been a staple in the Central West End for over a century. Grand ScaleCOMFORT ON A

Purchased three years ago, the 12,000-plus-square-foot multi-level was built in 1996 and is surrounded by magnificent grounds that the new owners describe as “like a park, incredibly peaceful and quiet.” The original home, however, was decidedly formal in style, and the couple hoped to create an environment that was “less traditional, more comfortable and livable.” What they envisioned was a relaxing retreat for their soon-to-be-blended families and a great place for entertaining. The husband, an executive with a major corporation headquartered in St. Louis, could see the home’s potential from the outset; he’d already lived in multiple homes during his well-traveled career! A local business owner and design professional, the wife adheres to the philosophy that “details make the difference” and has a special penchant for texture. Both have been fully involved in the redesign, which is still ongoing, and they chose Christi Johaningmeyer, founder/owner of Architextures, to oversee the renovation and harmonize their ideas. Recognized by the St. Louis Business Journal as one of the city’s Top 10 Largest Interior Design Firms, “Architextures focuses primarily on commercial architecture and design, so this project has been an enjoyable change of pace for me,” Christi observes. The trio’s collaboration has fostered a warm friendship and a transformation of the home that all agree is “simply amazing.” First on the agenda was replacement of the entry doors. Although impressive, the original entry was all-glass and allowed a direct line of sight to the rear of the home. Rich walnut doors now add beauty and privacy to the massive two-story foyer. Wrought-iron spindles line the gracefully curved staircase and catwalk, and the foyer’s traditional chandelier was replaced with four stunning, handcrafted Fortuny fixtures, suspended at varying heights. Accessible from the foyer, the wood-lined study and formal dining room are paradigms of understated elegance. Many of the furnishings in both spaces were previously owned by the homeowners and have been blended with stylish new pieces – for example, a crocodile leather sofa and coffee table from KDR Designer Showrooms in the study and comfortable head chairs, upholstered in a muted animal pattern and trimmed in crystal, for the

dining table. Christi particularly enjoyed designing the home’s unique window treatments, noting that the drapery embellishing the dining room’s architectural windows is her favorite. Her principal challenge was to link the voluminous family activity spaces for a more contemporary, free-flowing traffic pattern, while creating a more casual, intimate ambience throughout the home. To achieve this, she established a focal point for every room and selected a tasteful palette of chocolates, apricots, green and gold. In the step-down two-story great room, floor-to-ceiling windows offer commanding views of the pool area, outdoor kitchen and tennis court, and the Italian silk drapery was designed to accent the windows without impeding the view. Reupholstered in apricot, the sofas are arranged on an iridescent Kaim-Kisner sculptured silk area rug from New Zealand. Formerly stark white, the columns and woodwork were softened to a creamy tone,

and an intriguing faux technique – applied tissue paper, painted in sage with a chocolate glaze – gives delicate texture to the walls. The cherry floors were darkened for contrast and a huge antiqued mirror hangs above the fireplace, which showcases a marble surround and custom screen by Perpetua Iron. To better fit the homeowners' personal style, the kitchen was completely renovated. An exterior wall was removed and extended, and two arches were added to integrate the kitchen with the hearth room. Culinary activity revolves around an 8-foot work island, topped with Arctic Pearl granite and illuminated by drum lights. Concealed appliances were a must-have for the homeowners. The Viking dishwashers, enormous double-door recessed refrigerator, and additional refrigerator drawers are all hidden behind furniture-quality cabinetry and fronts by Beck/Allen Cabinetry. A Sonoma Tile medallion adds a decorative touch above the 8-burner stainless Viking range,

and the ornately trimmed, cream-colored cabinetry has a chocolate glaze that coordinates with the chocolate-stained island bases and arched refrigerator front. A bi-level island breakfast bar, defined by a handsome arch and topped with matching granite, separates the kitchen from the breakfast room and coffered hearth room, where the arch motif is again repeated on the limestone fireplace surround. One learns to expect the unexpected when touring this fashionable residence. Case in point, in the main-floor privacy wing, the husband’s personal study features crocodile-embossed leather plank flooring and sand-textured walls that have been hand-painted and glazed. In the sumptuous master suite, plush furnishings and soft hues evoke tranquility, and – a subtle alteration – the fireplace mantel was lowered, de-emphasizing the scale of the bedroom. Stretching the full width of the home, the lower-level entertainment area was renovated to fit the homeowners' request of a more open layout. In the original floor plan, the various spaces were accessed from a hallway that was essentially a long, dark tunnel. “We opened

the entire space,” Christi explains, and it’s now “hospitality central,” where dozens of guests can simultaneously enjoy the fireside gathering area, billiard/shuffleboard/card tables, AV room, full kitchen and bar. The husband’s only stipulation was “TVs visible from every vantage point." Christi replaced the “tunnel” with cherry plank flooring laid in an attractive harlequin design, but retained the glass block walls of the refurbished his-&-her workout rooms. A temperature-controlled wine room was added, and the home theater was equipped with a 90-inch HiDef screen and theater seating. Suitably enhancing the decor are a jukebox and the husband’s astonishing array of personal and professional sports memorabilia. Perfectly designed for this energetic, convivial household, the remodeled home is everything they’d hoped for and more. Catching their breath before tackling renovation of the four upstairs bedrooms, the owners conclude, “Christi is fantastic and came up with things we never considered! in her 30-year career diane Breckenridge-Barrett has created beautiful living rooms, grand hotel lobbies and handsome offices. her interior design talents have transformed sleek downtown condos and rustic country getaways. But no matter what the project, somewhere in that design you would be hard pressed not to find a bouquet of flowers. the arrangements might show up as part of a painting or a fabric detail or displayed in a fine container, but flowers there would be. her addiction is one she unashamedly admits to. “i have a passion for flowers,” she beams as she sits in the window-filled sunroom of her des peres home looking out on a patio brimming with blossoms in the form of flowering trees, overflowing pots and massed plantings. designing with live plants is a joy she is currently rediscovering since her marriage five years ago to ray Barrett. she has gone from living in a glass-walled city condominium with a spectacular view of the arch and the mississippi river to a traditional red brick home surrounded by an acre of property. the outdoor space has been hers

to design along with the interior of the home, and she has relished the task. “i’ve always had a love of gardens, flowers and the outdoors and that interest has never stopped,” she says. in her home it is almost hard to tell where the sunroom, designed in tones of gold and salmon, stops and the patio begins. salmon patio umbrellas and seat cushions take the eye from indoors out. planters spill over with salmon-colored geraniums and beds and pots feature lantana in shades that vary from gold to pink to orange. Both diane and ray love to cook and entertain. they recently enlarged the patio and added an outdoor fireplace. in nice weather diane estimates they invite family and friends for dinner at least three times per week. in typical diane fashion, the place settings, table linens and sometimes even the food itself carries the color theme forward. But, diane emphasizes, the house, patio and all the furnishings are

meant to be enjoyed. “Between us, Ray and I have 24 grandchildren, so this is a house that’s lived in,” she says. Beyond the patio, Diane likes to garden with masses of flowers in a single color for a bold statement. ‘Knock Out’ roses and daylilies fill entire large beds. At the back of the property masses of hydrangeas blooming at slightly different times form a cutting garden so she is never without flowers for a dining table or an end table. Diane’s plan is for something to be blooming from early spring until December. Fragrance is also an important garden component. In early spring a line of dwarf ‘Lollipop’ lilacs frame the entrance to the patio from the yard and scent the air. One month later, a Japanese tree lilac, placed where the sunroom and the patio meet, perfumes both the house and the garden. Partnering with Diane in this gardening enterprise is horticulturist Connie Break, who with Diane’s encouragement has now formed her own company. Connie calls working with Diane in the garden a “match made in heaven. She gets in my truck and we go down to the supplier. She knows what she wants, but she’s always open to new things. If she doesn’t like something, she’s not afraid to say it. I’m able to use my plant knowledge and along with her design skills, it’s brought so much life to the landscape,” Connie says.

Particularly important, Connie notes, are the trips they make inside the house to peer out the windows and “look for what we want to see outside and how the landscape can be pulled inside the house.” While the backbone of the garden is in the flowering trees, shrubs and perennials, one of the most creative aspects of the landscape, both women agree, is the ability to use annuals to create a different color scheme in a few beds and around the patio each year. “I’ll say let’s do all white this year or let’s do bluish purples,” Diane explains. “One year we filled an entire patio bed with yellow marigolds. It was just beautiful.” Another thing both women agree on and enjoy about their relationship is that both are willing to be hands-on in all aspects of the digging and planting. “I love the gardening part of it,” says Diane. “I like to do it all.” Connie adds that she is continually amazed by Diane’s willingness and ability to “do it all,” even to moving large, heavy pots of flowers from place to place. To Diane it is simply another way being an interior designer translates to the garden. “She told me she’s moved more furniture than most men,” Connie relates with a laugh.

Downsizing certainly doesn’t have to mean downgrading. When two empty nesters traded their roomy Frontenac home for a smaller place with high walk-ability scores, they retained the grandiose open-air amenities they’d previously enjoyed by cleverly facilitating a collision of functionality, comfort and class. “We transitioned from over an acre to just a fifth of an acre,” says the homeowner of this “edgy Tuscan” home boasting an eclectic mix of classic architectural features. Architect Paul Doerner of The Lawrence Group and developers at Michael Lauren Development helped the Clayton homeowners fit everything they’d loved about their previous backyard into a more compact space. Because the homeowners “don’t transplant anyplace during the summers,” features that combat heat and humidity were essential. A roof shades the three season room, and a ceiling fan stimulates welcome breezes. The homeowners may have abandoned a 20-by-40-foot swimming pool when they moved, but they retained its desirable cooling effect by incorporating a daintier dipping pool that’s less than half that size. Ceramic tile, a material rarely afflicted by mold or mildew, forms a sensible yet upscale base. Summer Classics cast aluminum patio furniture from Mansfield Nursery is a timeless - and durable - addition. The homeowners embellished their table with striking natural stone cut by Sander Coovert of Absolute Tile & Stone; simple green cushions liven up the chairs. This soft, natural color scheme gives the petite space cohesiveness. A fireplace affords the room its three-season status, warming family and friends well into the fall. Candles atop the mantle are a space-saving embellishment. Handcrafted ironwork, too, adds accent without taking up square footage. Peter Zadrozinski, owner of Classic Metal Craft, created the window guard first - a practical piece offering aesthetically pleasing security and an element of privacy that doesn’t compromise the alfresco vibe. “Iron can get really heavy,” says Zadrozinski. To keep things light, the ironworker masterfully molded mild steel into curvaceous, nature-inspired décor. An iron trellis with whimsical florets and leaf patterns complements the window guard. The trellis was an addition the homeowners eagerly added after Jason Delaney, Missouri Botanical Gardens’ North Gardens Supervisor, suggested forgoing pots, which tend to clutter small spaces, and incorporating seasonal hues through a vertical structure. When flowers aren’t blooming, decorative ironwork invigorates an otherwise-dull brick wall. Above the fireplace you’ll notice the family crest. “This took quite a few man hours to digitally trace and put into a format we could use for laser cutting,” recalls Zadrozinski who had never done anything quite like it before. Zadrozinski specializes in unique requests and welcomed the challenge of creating something meaningful for an ambitious outdoor living room that’s the epitome of big living despite its modest size. This is a far cry from the outermost reaches of Western Australia. The Smith family, most of whom were born among the vines are living in a remote, pristine environment in the Frankland River region of Western Australia -- just north of the largest protected wilderness area in the country. Barrie Smith, the patriarch who was raised on a farm with vineyards in South Australia, moved to the West with his family as a young teen. After he married Judi Cullam, another Western Australia transplant, they bought the land that is now Frankland Estate Winery and Farm just near the town of Frankland River. It is where their two children (now part-owners) Hunter and Elizabeth, as well as their children, still live.

The tiny town of Frankland River, population of only a few hundred people, is nearly a four-hour drive south to Perth, which stands as one of the most remote cities on earth. The family makes a certified organic Riesling and Shiraz under the label, Isolation Ridge – purposefully announcing the region’s away-from-it-all location.

Life for the Smith family at Frankland Estate is an outdoor life, whether it’s tending to the 2,000 sheep they own or the treks they often make through the wilderness to Southwestern Australia’s strikingly clean and clear beaches, where summertime activities like surfing, camping and fishing are always on the agenda.

Being largely isolated doesn’t mean the Smiths lack for gracious living. The family often prepares meals together that, in summer, are eaten outside at a long, beautifully set table with a rustic theme that complements their surroundings. For instance, an old oak barrel once used to age the winery’s Shiraz is partially buried in the earth at the right height for a serving table.

Fruit trees of every stripe – figs, pears, peaches – are plentiful, and Judi has a large vegetable garden that meets the needs of most meals. A few of the farm’s lambs will eventually find their way to the outdoor grill, and the 1,000 hectares of farmland also yield wheat and canola crops alongside the vines.

Summer evenings in Frankland River are usually dry and cool, perfect for a dish that’s a Smith family favorite…tomato and onion soup topped with mozzarella and basil, with all ingredients either coming from their garden or from other farmers in the area. It is followed by slow-roasted lamb, a fresh salad of whichever vegetables are at their ripest, topped by figs and pears in balsamic vinegar, homemade bread, and Frankland Estate’s Rocky Gully Riesling and Shiraz. Don’t sacrifice your view any longer. Frameless glass fences are an architecturally savvy alternative to common fencing materials, such as wood or aluminum. Typically seen in New York and California, glass fences are no longer an East Coast or West Coast design. St. Louisans desire the clean lines and transparency that a glass fence offers. Glass fences give the illusion of having no boundaries. In addition to preserving a coveted view, the fences are also a powerful design option, creating a dramatic architectural feel of greater space. Not only do glass fences protect you and your guests from the wind, but they also protect your yard and pool. No one wants to sit poolside while clutching his or her hat or top. “Glass fences limit the amount of leaves or trash ending up in the pool,” says interior designer Garison Salinas of Garrison Ltd., who has designed glass-fenced areas for several clients. Garison says glass fences can be relatively maintenance free if an anti-water spot spray is applied similar to what is used on windshields. This eliminates the need to constantly wipe down the glass panels. While glass fences look aesthetically appealing, you may be questioning their practicality and safety. Tom Barron, owner of Barron

UnobstrUcted View Mirror Glass & Door, says glass fences are feasible for most homeowners but a lot of people don’t consider them as an option. “If you can think outside the box, there are a variety of cool options for glass fencing,” Barron says. Barron and Salinas worked together to create a frameless glass fence for a home in Ladue. In terms of safety, there is nothing fragile about the material the glass fences are made of. Tempered glass is primarily used in the rare case the glass breaks causing it to explode into lots of little pieces. Not every project is well suited for a frameless glass fence. Barron says lots of variables affect whether or not the look can be achieved such as the fence’s location, height, weight etc. As far as design goes, there are a variety of options for fences including different thicknesses, color variations, hardware and there is even the option to sandblast a design onto parts of the glass. Impact lighting can also enhance the drama of the fence. It’s shaping up to be a great summer at Andy and Anita Higginbotham’s Chesterfield home, where warm days are spent in the new pool, meals prepared in the outdoor kitchen are served on the enlarged patio, and balmy evenings on the screened porch feature the soothing sounds of the backyard’s two water features. Last summer wasn’t as fun, with the yard becoming a construction site in June. “We just didn’t have a backyard, and it was tough to give that up,” Anita says. But it was worth it: After a few months, the backyard’s wide, green lawn had been transformed into a stunning multi-use space designed to make the most of outdoor living. The project finished up in September—too late to enjoy the new pool for long, but just in time to spend crisp fall evenings around the new outdoor fireplace. The vision for the space began with the homeowners, who had long wanted a pool. For fine-tuning and execution, they turned to a trusted

source, Jim Graeler of Chesterfield Valley Nursery. “We kind of knew what we wanted,” says Anita. “And Jim made it better. We’ve worked with Jim for so long, he knows what we like. And he’s a genius with coming up with something new and different, which we wanted.” The Higginbotham’s design began with the pool, the largest piece. Once that was placed, other elements took shape: enlarging the patio, adding the kitchen and fireplace area, moving a pond and adding another. The plan carefully considered multiple factors, such as placement and use, with extra care taken to ensure that the space is good for the family’s frequent entertaining by providing adequate room on the patio and around the pool. Jim also carefully considered sightlines—the pool, for example, offers the sleek line of an infinity edge from one side and from the other, a cascading waterfall featuring natural stone. Several existing elements were also enhanced to make the yard cohesive, using the same materials as the new features: deck

supports made into stone pillars, new wrought-iron railings, and a new screened porch. “It blends so much better than before,” Anita says. The result is a backyard that features distinct areas that retain a sense of their own space yet are connected well enough to form a whole. “It’s kind of like a house,” Jim says. “You make sure one area doesn’t disrupt another.” He noted that there are multiple ways to create boundaries that provide a sense of defined space, such as varied elevations, using differing building materials or placement of plants, such as a flowering tree or a cluster of evergreens. Creating unity in the outdoor space wasn’t that much different than doing a house’s décor either, where harmonious materials provide cohesiveness and pops of contrast, texture and color add interest. Materials and plants worked together in color or seasonality, yet differences in texture added interest. The fireplace’s weathered fieldstone and the weathered sandstone near the pool, for example,

are of the same family, while the Aux Vases Old World tumbled stone in the pillars provides contrast. And then came the finishing touch: the plants. Andy and Anita didn’t want “the same old plants,” so Jim used a wide variety of plant material to fill out the space, from Japanese maples to dogwoods, climbing hydrangeas to emerald green arborvitaes. “Putting in the hardscape is fun, but what brings a project to life and pulls it together is the softscape, the plants,” Jim says. “It rounds off some of the hard edges, and you create interest not only with the foliage but with color and things like berries, which add interest in the winter.” All that careful planning was well worth the effort, says Anita. “From each vantage point, there’s something nice to see—the pool, the trees in the back, the two waterfalls. Nestled in a woodland setting, Thorncrown Chapel rises 48 feet into the Ozark sky. This magnificent wooden structure contains 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass. It sits atop over 100 tons of native stone and colored flagstone. The chapel's simple design and majestic beauty combine to make it what critics have called "one of the finest religious spaces of modern times."

Since the chapel opened in 1980, over six million people have visited this woodland sanctuary. It has won numerous Architectural awards such as the American Institute of Architecture's Design of the Decade Award for 1981 and the American Institute of Architecture's Design of the Decade Award for the 1980's. Recently, members of the AIA placed Thorncrown Chapel fourth on its list of the top buildings of the twentieth century.

Founded in the 12th century by a local noble family, Spittal is a town in western Austria that lies along the Drava River. Spittal, which means "hospital," was named for a hospital founded in 1191 by the counts of Ortenburg to serve the poor and sick. The town received market rights in 1242 and achieved municipal status in 1930. The mettnitzer Restaurant is built in a 100-year-old home and serves up the finest fare in Spittal.

In 1953, a meeting between two gentlemen, Thayer Coggin and Milo Baughman, forever changed the American furniture industry. The result of the meeting was the formation of Thayer Coggin, Inc., the innovator of the mid-century modern furniture era. Baughman’s creative designs are well known throughout history. This year, Thayer Coggin is marking its 60th year of modern furniture with a road show displaying 30 of Milo Baughman’s designs, beginning with the first two chairs that Milo presented in 1953 and ending with his last creation at age 80 in 2003. Take a chronological walk through time and experience Baughman’s famous pieces and design vision. Phil Miller, director of sales and marketing for Thayer Coggin, will

join KDR Designer Showrooms and the Interior Design Center of St. Louis for a special trade industry cocktail reception on Thursday, July 25. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the presentation will be from 6:30– 7:30 p.m. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served before the presentation. Sponsors for the reception include the IIDA and ASID chapters. St. Louis Homes & Lifestyles is also hosting a Road Show open to the public at KDR July 22 through Aug. 2. View the Milo Baughman Classic Designs on display during normal showroom hours; weekdays 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Negative/iNfiNity edgeNegative/infinity edge pools create a dramatic effect in your backyard. A negative or infinity edge pool produces the visual effect that the water is extending to the horizon. This type of pool is ideal for a yard with a long, expansive view. “If the grade of the yard falls away from the house, this creates an opportunity for a negative edge pool with a lower catch basin,” says Bret Wood, director of design at West Port Pools.

Beach eNtryA beach entry pool features a deck that gently slopes beneath the surface of the water, becoming increasingly deep as your move forward much like walking into the ocean waves. These pool entries are ideal for homeowners with young children, handicapped individuals or senior citizens. They allow the swimmer to enter the pool without having to use stairs or a ladder. “A beach pool entry will make the pool length larger because of the slope from deck level down into the pool,” explains Bret Wood, West Port Pools.
