WOULDWould you change your wood heating practices to help out smal

land owners??? It would appear that over 50% o New Brunswickersuse wood as either their main source o heat or as a secondary sourceo heat. I suspect that while quite a number o wood burners have awoodlot that they might harvest rom, the majority, however, are likelybuyers o wood. But, whether, you are cutting your own or buyinghere is the problem. Hard wood or sale ... mostly maple, yellow birch.. NO WHIE BIRCH.

How is this a problem you ask?? Firstly, the real world dierencebetween maple and white birch as your primary heating uel is about10% more heat rom the maple. Using a wood burning appliance withabout a 50% eciency the dierence will be hardly noticed. Due to thequantity o white birch available sellers will oen discount a load owhite birch and put money in your pocket, Tere were at least a coupleo years when I heated with nothing but white birch and noticed nodierence.

So, Mikie what is the big deal?? Maple and yellow birch, along withbeech are key hardwoods o the original Acadian Forest!! White birchpoplar, and fr are considered pioneer species and crop up in signifcannumbers when we deplete the orest o the primary species that oncedominated. As woodlot owners who want to return the orest to itsoriginal condition, we need to haul out tons o this over-populatedpioneer stu and give the good stu room and time to re-populate.

On a cool spring or all day, you dont need a fre that lasts or hourand hours, you just need a quick blaze or an hour or two to take thechill o. During the evening or on weekends, even i the temperatureis a cool minus twenty, you can still use lower grade wood or heatuntil it is time to stoke up or the night!! About fy percent o our heatat home comes rom sowood, poplar and partially rotted birch ormaple. Te rest comes almost entirely rom quality white birch.I you are interested in making greater use o pioneer wood or at leas

some o your wood heat, contact me through email [email protected] let me know. I there is sucient interest, I will try and publish alist o woodlot owners that might be willing to supply pioneer woodat very reasonable prices, especially i you are ready and willing to dosome o the work.

Consider also, how our community institutions, schools, etc couldbe converted to utilize pioneer wood species or 100% o their heatingneeds. Te environment would beneft by shiing rom non-renewablepetroleum products and our orests would beneft tremendously byallowing our traditional trees to urther mature and multiply. 800

TO BUY OR NOT TO BUY

    THAT IS THE QUESTION?

Now that the risk o killing a rost is nally over, its likely that therewill be a mad rush to the garden centers and the household budgetswill again be in a perilous state. I you are ortunate enough to havea deer proo ence, the sky is the limit, i not, then its wise to pick asmany deer proo items as possible.Tere are a number o interesting plants and bushes that seem to be

either very low on our white tailed riends dietary list, or happily, otheir list all together. For several years, despite the regular appearanceo these beasties, I have grown the ollowing with great success:

Lavenders; Forsythia; bush and vine Honeysuckles; Epimediuma low perennial with delightul pink, yellow or red delicate bloomsollowed by heart shaped leaves that turn a beautiul deep red coloras they mature; Deutzia, a shrub with delicate ragrant blossoms

and pale green leaves; Fox Gloves; Burning Bush; Ladys MantleBarberry; Caragana; Peonies; Hawthorns and assorted Clematis. Soar the Wisteria has remained in tact however, now that it is trailingtemptingly over the ence I am not sure o its uture. No matter how rm I am in my resolve to abide by the Dont Feed

the Deer, concept, the act remains that i we garden at all, we areproviding ood or them ... anyway, there are plants that are simplytoo beautiul to pass up and there is protection or them. Its wise tokeep these purchases within reasonable bounds, namely the numberthat one can easily spray on a regular basis.

My dentist recently suggested that since deer avoid the Narcissusamily, (Daodils and the like), that a blend o the aded blooms witha ew o the leaves might be a good base or the next miracle repellantI shall have a go, since it is time to cut the blossoms down anyway, I

shall mix in a little oil or beaten egg to help the mixture adhere to theleaves and Hey Presto, we might just strike gold; enough perhaps topay or a really ancy lling!!While you are at it, cut down the entire blossom bearing stems rom

tulips and crocus, but compost them as they are the #1 avorite oodBy taking o the spent blooms the plant then will put all its energiesinto strengthening the bulb, instead o working hard on producinga nice at seed pod. Te results will provide many more fowers nexyear.

Happy gardening, even i it means scaling your diet to wieners andbeans! 805

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE BUZZING KIND!One o the things I miss rom my old house is the lilac hedge that

ran the width o the ront lawn. Te hedge was there or likely tenyears beore it nally had a single bloom, but once it got started itwas thereaer spectacular. I do have our lilacs planted at the newhouse, one white, two purple and one French, but none have gottenbig enough to bloom. We also have an immature hedge along theparking lot at the oce, which has now gotten established enough tohave a ew blooms on it. One o the lovely warm sunny days at thebeginning o June I sauntered over to smell the roses . . . err lilacs.Ahhhh . . . heavenly. I did not get too close as I was wearing dresssandals and a long sweeping skirt, but with lilacs you do not needyour nose buried in the blooms to enjoy the scent!

It was the end o the work day, so I was heading or my car to gohome, but took time to chat or a ew minutes with a co-worker in theparking lot. Hopped into the car and tossed my bags on the passenger

seat, and suddenly elt an OUCH! And another OUCH. Somethingwas stabbing me in the upper thigh! And it was buzzing! Tis is notgood!Out o the car! O comes the blazer, shake out the shirt in case it is

traveling upwards, still buzzing. Shake the lovely long foral skirt . . .louder buzzing. He (o course its a he) is under the skirt somewhere!Shaking it wasnt getting me anyway. Please recall I am standing in theparking lot o our oce property in Hampton. Dropping my drawers. . . err skirt . . . is likely to net me an arrest or indecent exposure. Iboot it to the oce to encounter a co-worker o the male persuasion

just packing up to go. He was unceremoniously pushed out the doorwith a Get out! I need to strip! and the door locked behind him.O with the skirt, o with the slip . . . the buzzing is now on the foor, obviously in the olds o the skirt. Since I was down to my skivvies

by then, it is ortunate there was another co-worker present (emale)who careully bundled the skirt and hornet outdoors and shook himloose. Whew . . .When you go in search of honey you must expect to be stung by bees.
