BIG KIDWe have just had a three day and two night vacation on PEIwith the daughter and the grand granddaughter. A ne time washad by all but seemed especially enjoyable to the Carmen KidA major event was the joy o being allowed on the roller coasterthat last year she had been denied access because she was toosmall. So, riding the roller coaster this year was kind o a rite opassage that moved her along the road toward being a Big Kid.

In other news, Mikie has moved along his goal towards beinga Big Kid by getting his backhoe attachment all hooked up andworking. Te very big job o road repair has now begun. Havinggotten the backhoe attached once to the tractor, subsequentconnections should go a air bit easier but it will still likely tobe a major pain in the butt. One o the things that I noted orthe missus was that the average PEI armer usually has our ormore tractors. o some o you, who are tractor impaired, this

may seem excessive, but i you have ve attachments and onlyone tractor to work with you might spend hal o your workday switching back and orth. Dig a trench with backhoe, oopsneed to bush whack some o those alders, oops where did that 12inches o snow come rom, attach snow blower, oops better haulout some wood beore more snow, attach wood trailer. Are youbeginning to see my point!!! A 12 hour day and only 6 o themactually doing something useul.

And o course there is the pride actor. No oense to PEIarmers, but I hate to see New Brunswickers playing secondddle just or the sake o not having a couple o extra tractors.Carmen and I are not the only ones trying to transition to being

Big Kids. Te Jet has been working on his own rite o passageA month ago he had a close encounter with a porcupine. A ew

days ago he had a closer encounter. Apparently Te Jet was noalone in his love or apples!! Without even a yelp he managedto pick up a dozen or so quills in his nose and upper lip. Sincehe had no quills in his mouth it would seem that he was justtrying to be riendly with this airly young porky. Due to hisyouth none o the quills were more than an inch or so in lengthand about hal o that was sticking out. So with pliers in handTe Jet had his Big Kid rite o passage. While he would strugglea bit when you got near his nose with the pliers, he never whinednor complained at all when they were extracted. What a Big Boyhe was!!! 800

GOOD NIGH IRENEHow very ortunate we were to be spared what might have been

great devastation rom the tail end o the hurricane! As withmost negative experiences in our lives there are good things thatcan evolve rom them; we can learn rom the near miss severalgarden related lessons that could stand us in good staid whenwe are next assaulted by high winds and super abundant rainBeore the onslaught o winter with its potential or ice stormsand snow alls that can lay heavy burdens on our shrubs andtrees, it is well to take inventory and do some serious pruningand /or elling o trees.

Te rst trees to go are those that, should they all, wouldeither damage buildings, or worse, all upon passing people or

vehicles. It is never a pleasing task to dispose o a tree; howeverthe pain can easily be alleviated by browsing through cataloguesmagazines and books and deciding what small owering beauty

you will plant in its place. As or those bushes and trees thatpresent no danger to man or beast, its still important to look aertheir welare i they are to prosper. Branches that rub together inthe wind (you will probably hear the squeaking beore you seethe action), should be pruned, some o them will have to go! It isa good plan to prune out any branches that are steering inwardsthus opening up the tree or bush to air and light, this kind opruning is much easier to do aer the leaves have allen andthe orm o the patient can more easily be assessed. Reducingthe number o potential branches on lilacs is essential, leave toomany and they all die or suer greatly rom powdery mildewor the many ungi, oen rightully smelly, that love damp overcrowded conditions. A little eort now with pruning saw andloppers will pay dividends next summer and or years to come.

One o the very real pleasures or me in the aermath o Irenewas a large Ash tree that was uprooted, a great example o goodthings evolving rom seemingly unortunate happenings. AsI began to lop o branches prior to calling in the Chain SawChappie, the neighbours children arrived and had a wonderultime climbing along its branches and leaping o onto the sograss (as well as into grampas arms). I was easily convinced tokeep this special climbing apparatus until late all, what a joy tosee children happily playing with so simple an object, enjoyingthe sunshine and resh air.Proves yet again that the best things in lie areree. 805

    The History of the

    Atlantic Balloon Fiesta

In 1985, several people in the local area werepresented an opportunity to extend the local touristseason, by hosting a Hot Air Balloon Event. As

local pilots knew of the great flying in the Sussexarea it was suggested that the Sussex BalloonFestival Inc. be started. Balloonists were invited tothe area for a weekend, and although it was ratherinformal, it was to become the first annual Hot Air

    Balloon Festival.

The event first consisted of regular hot air balloonsand the first shape balloon to attend was the HouseBalloon. The Pink Elephant, The Cow, The Dragon,The Mountie, The Yellow Pages Directory, The

Monster Truck, The Maple Leaf, The Canada Flag,The Hawaiian Tropics Fish, Tony the Tiger, TheCow, Green Dragon and The Purple People Eater,Tree Bird, Octopus, have all flown our skies!

The Atlantic Balloon Fiesta proved to be a successand on ground and in the air activities were addedto keep people in Sussex even when the hot air balloons were not flying including childrensactivities and games, skydiving demonstrations,

helicopter rides, live entertainment at the bandstand, and amusement rides.

A Craft Fair was added eventually and proved to bea tremendous success! The Craft Fair features handmade crafts and runs the entire weekend. In 1990

an Antique & Classic Car Show & Shine was addedto the growing list of activities during the AtlanticBalloon Fiesta weekend. This car show featuresantiques, street rods, bikes and trucks.

On the weekend after the Canadian Labour Day,

this festival has been a tremendous success. It

The Atlantic International Balloon FiestaCommittee, 100s of volunteers with the support

    SOUHFIELD UNIED CELEBRAES 140 yEARS

On Sunda, September 18th at 2:00pm the Southeld UnitedChurch will be celebrating its 140th anniversary. Te SoutheldUnited Church, ormerly known as the Campbell SettlementPresbyterian Church until the communitys name was changed inthe early 1900s, has seen many changes over the years. Te churchwas started in the mid 1800s by the Reverend Andrew Donald, amissionary who came to the Maritimes rom Scotland. wo yearsaer his ordination in Haliax he was called to a charge in southernNew Brunswick but was then sent to Carleton County or a year

In 1858, he was called back to serve a pastoral charge consisting oCampbell Settlement (Southeld), Salt Springs, Londonderry andMechanic Settlement a very wide spread area. Rev. Donald builta house in Campbell Settlement and lived there until he retired in1875.

Te cornerstone o the church shows the date 1871, but an oldland map indicates a church was present on the site as early as1862. When church union took place in 1925, it became knownas the Southeld Church o Canada as part o the Norton PastoraCharge. However, in 1955, the area became a Student Mission Fieldand remained so or 31 years. Over that period o time the churchwas served by several student ministers. A plaque has been placedin the church honouring those who have served the church overthe years.

In 1986, Southeld United Church became part o the newlyormed Andrew Donald Pastoral Charge, along with Saint AndrewsKirk, Hammond River and Salina Kirk, Salt Springs. Te charge wasnamed in honour o Rev. Andrew Donald who had served all threeareas. In 1994, because o road construction, the church was movedto its present site and many changes were made to the building.Te congregation extends an invitation to all to come share in this

special service. Rev. Brian DeLong, a ormer student minister inSoutheld in 1972, is the guest speaker or the occasion. Speciamusic will be provided by Joe Ness and Brenda McLaughlinRereshments to ollow. 523

BOARD DONAES O LOCAL FOOD BANKSA summer ood drive by the Saint John Real Estate Board hasraised well over two tons o ood or ood banks in southwestNew Brunswick. Last month, the Board issued a challenge to itsmembership, aer hearing about shortages at local ood banksto come up with 1,000 pounds o ood beore the end o July.A riendly competition among the 280 REALOR members o

the Board generated one ton o ood, and then the REALORShosted barbeques at three Superstore locations, accepting oodand cash donations rom the public in exchange or barbequedhamburgers and hotdogs.

Te generosity o the public was overwhelming, said BarryMacDonald, Chair o the REALORS Care Committee, whichcoordinated the ood drive. People gave by the bag-ull, andeven by the cart-ull. About 55 REALORS participated in thebarbeque events, cooking up ood, collecting donations, andcirculating among the shoppers in the store to remind themabout the ood drive.

Expectations were high, according to the Board, but the endtally, coming it at 4,381 pounds, surpassed 2 tons. Tat blewthe goal we set or ourselves right out o the water, said BoardPresident Jason Stephen. I am very proud o the generosity othe members o our Board and the members o our community.

O particular note, Stephen points out, is the donation o SaintJohn REALOR George Carroll, who brought in 725 poundo ood. I like a challenge, laughed Carroll last week, as hebrought in yet another load o bags o our, juice, and cannedgoods. And I hate to lose!

Te Board also raised over $1,000 in cash donations at thebarbeque, which MacDonald says will be converted into gicards or more groceries to donate.

Te Saint John Real Estate Board covers the southern part oNew Brunswick to the US border in St. Stephen, and includesthe counties o St. John, Kings, Charlotte and portions o QueensCounty. 820

CLOSE ENCOUNERS OF HE CRIER KINDAer all o the excitement rom our blustery riend Irene, Mike and

I were setting out on our usual evening walk to the woods with Jet.One o Jets great joys is the little hard green apples that litter theground beneath an old wild apple tree we pass on our way, and aerall that wind there were even more than usual. Seems someone elsewas enjoying them as well and Mr Jet met up with Mr Porky, whowas NO in the mood to share. Aer an uneventul extraction oa dozen or so quills rom his snout we set out again and enjoyed alovely walk. Tis in no way comes close to the night my brothers dogencountered both a skunk and a porcupine within an hour o eachother. I believe it was the skunk rst and aer getting bathed the dogwent tearing o or a quick run (as they love to do as soon as they areclean!) and promptly ran into a porcupine.

Over all we have quite ortunate with our pets and the little critterswith whom we share the countryside. We did have a long-hairedblack and white cat that we sometimes teased that he looked like askunk . . . plump and round. Ten one day he also SMELLED like askunk. We were lucky that it was this particular cat, as he was a lovelygentleman and tolerated three consecutive baths with just a pitiulexpression and no using. He looked more like a scrawny rat whenhe was bathed!

I have held a hummingbird in my hands when he became trappedin the back porch and couldnt nd his way rom the window he wasdesperately trying to y through to the open door. Such an amazinglittle creature, he sat perectly still and allowed me to carry him acrossthe room to release him.

Ten o course there was the night I awoke rom a sound sleep tothe sensation that something just wasnt right! Swoosh, across myace! Okay, that is not a sound I should be hearing in the middle othe night. Light please. A bat dive bombed me again. Michael, wakeup! He o course was more than happy to remain asleep and dealwith the problem in the morning. I was not. He eventually saw it myway and headed downstairs and out to the garage to etch a shingnet. Aer several unsuccessul attempts the bat was captured and ocourse released.

We have seen signs o both coyotes and bear on our daily walks, but so ar no sightings. I dont mind the little critters, but those twoI will be happy to not see outside o a zoo. Meantime, a thought orthe day: What kills a skunk is the publicity it gives itsel.~ AbrahamLincoln. 801
