Dear Editor SMSSee story on page 12.

EnvironmEntIt is Environment Week in Canada as I write this, so you will begetting it aer the act, but that is OK because with any luck at all theenvironment will still be around. I there is one issue that concerns meon the political ront is how governments typically think short termand oen not urther than the next election. I ask you ... when wasthe last time that you ever heard a politician o any political stripe talkabout 100 years down the road let alone 1000 years ahead. So I wondersometimes whether they believe the country will even be around thatlong. And you know, without some long range thinking ... they mightbe right!!Politicians, however, are simply reecting the thinking o the majority

o Canadians. In general we preer jobs now, lower taxes now and toheck with everything else. Politicians wont change until Canadianschange!!As a country Canada is still extremely dependent on the extraction o

natural resources or much o our prosperity. Currently we must acetwo key issues. Firstly, much o what we extract ... oil, natural gas, goldpotash, zinc, nickel and so on are in absolutely in limited quantitiesand will NEVER return. When the oil is gone ... it is gone orever orat least a ew hundred thousand years. Gold and zinc will never returnno matter how long the planet exists. Secondly, some o our resourcessuch as orestry and shing, are renewable but only within certainlimits. Te Atlantic cod shery has been largely decimated and negleco our woodlands could certainly eect our uture production.

Tere are probably ew things that Canadians love more than ourchildren. Well, there might be one ... our grandchildren. But whatabout our great, great, great, great, great grandchildren?? Does anyonegive a hoot?? Most o us wont be around to hold them and burp themand thank goodness no dirty diapers, buy do we care what their lives

will be like??Do you think that they deserve clean air?? How about clean water??

Do you think that a ew minerals and petroleum le in the groundwould be ok or are we starting to spoil them?? How about healthyorests, healthy oceans and lots o healthy animals and sh to makethem come alive?? Mikie youre really starting to go crazy here!!!

Tose o you who understand the basics o nancial managemenknow that you cannot spend every last dime and still have money oremergencies. We need to spend some and save some!! Te less wespend today ... the better we are o tomorrow!!A belated Happy Environment Week!! 800

BloSSom timE For SurE, But....What a glorious time o year, blossoms everywhere to enchantthe eye and ragrances that are rich enough to make one quitegiddy, however many o the blossoms we see are consideredundesirable. At this season o the year there are more jobs todo in the garden than most o us have time or so we need tobe very selective in what gets done, to be most eective withthat valuable time its best to get to the weeds that are on the

verge o seeding rst thus preventing hundreds o new plantrom inesting lawns and gardens. However all is not negativeeven with the detested Dandelion, excellent wine can be maderom the ower heads, the young leaves are great in salads andsandwiches and the ground up dried roots were valued duringdepression times as a coee substitute.

Te deer are still a major problem or local gardeners and

the repellent arsenal is almost as numerous as our undesirablemonster Bambis. o date the most successul ones seem to beone part o Ammonia to nine parts water with a little soap and

vegetable oil mixed in sprayed on the objects o our aectionsrepeat spraying aer multiple rainalls and new growth isrequired; or hanging resh sheeps wool in knee highs on stakesamongst the owers; i you use the darker beige ones they ratheresemble ladies slipper and rom a distance give the impressionthat a master gardener is in residence.

A most eective way o making an overgrown garden look asi it should be a center old in Canadian Gardening, is to takean edging tool and whistle it around the ower bed taking justenough time to weed a three oot swathe behind the edge. Teeye is caught by the clean crisp edge and the act that there are

weeds urther back in the area is scarcely noticed, especially ithe larger blooming weeds have been disposed o.

Having taken a short cut to a good looking plot its wise to sitback and enjoy the ruits o your labor (just think, i you hadharvested those dandelion owers and made wine last year, youcould relax in style!!). 805
