SOPHIE is one of the six abandoned tabbies,"Munchkins" that we advertised a few issues back. She isnow 14 weeks old and cute as a button. Full of mischiefand fun she plays very well with her two siblings (alsofemale) that are still with us at the Sanctuary.

EMMA is one of two kittens that came our way. She's abeautiful 12 week old tortie with exceptionally beautifuleyes and markings. She was a little shy when she firstcame to the Sanctuary, but she got over that quickly. Sheplays well with the three "Munchkins" and they haveaccepted her completely.

Both of these two kittens are in a foster home and beingwell loved and looked after. However, they need apermanent home. If interested in either one or both, please call us to make an appointment to meet them.

Furthermore, the presence of contraband tobacco productscauses the federal and provincial governments to losehundreds of millions of dollars in tax revenue annually, moneythat could fund social programs, education, employmentprograms and health care. It also causes legitimatebusinesses to declare bankruptcy and encourages youngpeople to take up smoking through the unrestricted access toinexpensive cigarettes. A recent study conducted by GFKResearch Dynamics on the usage of illicit cigarettes inCanada found that the total number of illicit cigarettes usedin 2008 was estimated at 13 billion, representingapproximately $2.4 billion in lost tobacco taxes whichincreases the tax burden on you the taxpayers.Your local RCMP Customs and Excise Section is asking for

    Many of you may w o n d e r w h a tcontraband tobacco is.Truth be told, most ofus may have been in

the presence of contraband tobacco or know of people whobuy or sell the product. The consequences of being in possession ofcontraband tobacco products carries a minimum fine of$1000.00 and up to five years in jail.

The contraband tobacco business is often viewed asinoffensive and simple stretch of the law to save a few bucks.Traditionally seen as a victimless crime, tobacco traffickingis now regarded as a significant source of income for all levelsof organized crime, who reinvest the substantial profits to

support other criminal activities such as drugs, firearmstrafficking, prostitution and human trafficking to name afew. A large portion of the readers are probably saying tothemselves, we live in small rural communities, there is nosuch thing as organized crime in this area' - unfortunatelythis is not the case. The Atlantic region has the secondlargest percentage of consumers of contraband tobacco inCanada, therefore, contraband tobacco product smuggler

    BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY 101

10 tips to make your return to school stressfree - with fall just around the corner, thousands of post-secondary studentsacross Canada are packing up theirbelongings to move across the province oreven the country to pursue their studies.

Whether youre moving a hundredkilometres away from home or a thousand, its important to keep yourself and your

possessions safe, says Amy Woods, official spokespersonfor Allstate Insurance Company of Canada. Although

weve had a small number of claims, weve noticed thattheft seems to be an issue for university students. Havingthe necessary protection in place and taking a few simplesteps before you leave for school allows you to enjoy youruniversity experience with fewer worries.

Allstate Canada has put together 10 tips to help you staysafe this school year:

    1. Whether youre living on or off campus, look into therules and regulations of your home away from home before

you leave. Make sure you do not bring anything that is notpermitted.

    2. Dormitories may seem like a fun, safe environment, butit is important to make sure to lock your door whenever youleave your room in order to protect your belongings.

    3. If you are bringing any items of high value to school, suchas musical instruments or jewelry, consider having theminsured against theft or damage before you arrive at school.

    4. Never abandon your laptop in a library. It only takes a fewmoments for someone to walk by and swipe it. If you must

leave it temporarily, invest in a laptop lock to act as adeterrent.5. If youre renting a room or an apartment in a building

you may be required to have tenants insurance, whichprotects you and your belongings if your property is stolenor damaged. Speak to your familys insurance provider orask someone you know for a recommendation for aninsurance provider in your new city.6. When you take a car out of province, remember to check

with your auto insurance company to see if you are covered

while away and contact the provinces transportatiodepartment to see if you need to change your license plates7. Dont leave anything valuable in your car, especially inplain sight. Put any high value items in the trunk or glovecompartment where they cant be seen.8. Keep an eye on your laundry if youre doing it at aLaundromat to avoid having your belongings stolen. Bringhomework or a book with you to help pass the time.9. How safe is your dormitory building? Look into the guestpolicy for your dormitory and see what kind of securityprocedures they have in place. If you feel unsafe, speak to anRA or an administrator about creating a secureenvironment.

    10. These days, many student cards act as more thanidentification. If you have a meal plan or library accountassociated with yours, report it immediately if it goesmissing.Staying safe while youre back at school doesnt have to be

as difficult as getting an A in chemistry. By keeping thesesimple tips in mind, you can focus on getting that project inon time and having fun. 920

"It is important to speak to your family

regarding organ donation," Cindy says. "It

    saves many lives."

We are looking for stories about people making adifference in the Sussex area - people who donate money

and work hard to keep churches and local organizations

operating, people who provide time and leadership to

programs that serve youth, people who organize and

contribute to fundraising activities that support worthy

causes and those in need in our community. If you know

a story about a community "Super Hero" we want to

    hear from you.

Call 832-5613 or email [email protected].

    Personal experience often motivates people

to become involved in particular causes.

That was the case for Cindy Boyd and June

Allen. Both of their fathers were on dialysis

for many years so it was a natural step to

become involved in the Kidney Foundation of

Canada, NB and PEI Branch, beginning with

the annual bowl-a-thon in Saint John.

Last year, the pair started a Sussex Chapter

of the organization. They have been involvedin fundraising for research that has included

    walk-a-thons, bowling, raffles and recently

    door-to-door canvassing. The chapter has

also brought in guest speakers to address

topics like finances since the price of

medications can be a big concern.

"Volunteering is fun," says June. "It is very

rewarding and you get to meet many new

    interesting people."

"We both enjoy volunteering, making a small

difference and meeting new people," Cindy

says. "It is satisfying, rewarding and makes a

person feel good about themselves." When they aren't involved in chapter

activities, the pair enjoys gardening and

checking out yard sales. While June is retired

from her job in Sussex with Aliant, Cindy

divides her working hours between the

    Sussex and Hampton Dental Clinics.

Cindy says that one of the reasons it is so

important to volunteer for the Kidney

Foundation is because of the great need.

"Sussex now has a satellite unit at the

Health Center and the surrounding areas

have many patients on dialysis and waiting

for transplants," she says. "The foundation

    has made many improvements through

research to improve the dialysisprocedure, but more are needed."

Education and research are some of the

    foundation's major focuses. Cindy says

99% of people don't even know what causes

it. People can get more information about

kidney disease and the Kidney Foundation

of Canada at www.kidney.ca as well as on

the NB and PEI branch site at

    www.kidney.ca/nbpei.

PROJECT LINUSBlankets made with love ... for a child in need of a hug

Project Linus is a group of people (and/or youth groups) thatvolunteer their time and materials to make blankets to helpcomfort children and youth who are hospitalized.

Florence Goddard got excited about this project, being agrandmother of 12, her heart was touched. She hadgrandchildren in the IWK or Moncton City Hospital who hadreceived a blanket or a teddy bear and knew how much it meantto the child. She had visited the Moncton Chapter of Project

Linus and became a blanketeer for the Salisbury, PetitcodiacHavelock and Elgin area. She then collects the blankets anddelivers them to stressed youth who have been involved inaccidents, fire or hospitalized due to serious life threateningillnesses.

So far, approximately 50 blankets have been collected byFlorence; some she has made herself and other blankets aremade by other interested people. This is a year-round project. Weneed youth blankets (55" x 65") and would appreciate any helpSome people have donated material and another lady is sewingthe quilts and returning them to Florence.

thOn Saturday, September 18 from 1:00-3:00pm Florence wilbe holding an Open House at her home (693 Rte 106 Salisbury

West), a great opportunity to learn more about Project Linus. Forthose who are working on a project, bring it with your or if you

have blankets ready to hand in, this is a good time to bring themand show the other interested people what you are working on.

Florence (372-5281) is always interested in speaking to groupsabout Project Linus. 325

    ADVANCE FEE LOAN SCAM

The Better Business Bureau serving the Maritime Provinceshas received complaints and numerousinquiries about two companies, namedCanadian Private Trust and Trust CanadaLenders, who claim to provide consumerand business loans. Although they claim tobe located in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia, theBBB has been unable to locate them.Neither have we been able to verify abusiness registration in the province usingeither one of those names.

Consumers have advised us that they found ads, in theirlocal newspaper, about a company that provides loans for anypurpose. Consumers are asked to fill out a detailed form withpersonal and financial information and are told immediatelythat they are approved for a loan and the money will be intheir bank account within 48 to 72 hours. Even though their

website says that there are no application fees or up-front feesconsumers are telling us that this is not true. Upon approvathe consumer is then asked to wire an "insurance fee" to thecompany. Once that fee is received consumers are then toldthat they have to provide an "administration fee". After that

fee is received consumers are then asked to send money for"legal fees". In total, consumers sent thousands of dollars fora loan that they did not receive in the end.

Signs of an advanced fee loan scam:

COOL MOVE DAY AT BOYS & GIRLS CLUBThank you to everyone who helped The Petitcodiac Boys andGirls Club with Cool Move Day; if it was not for thecommunity and the children it would never have been asuccess. We would also like to thank Kraft for giving ourcommunity this great opportunity to get healthy by eatingsmart and getting fit with Cool Moves.

The children had a lot of fun playing games and jumping inthe Dalmatian climber and slide. There was lots of differentfruit and vegetables on the tables for the community to tryThe adults enjoyed talking to the dietarian about readinglabels and discussing what children need. Cool Move Day wilget us started on a great program about eating right andstaying active.

So once again we would like to say thanks to all in ourcommunity. 320
