Mrs Cherie Hansen, Mr Garry Hansen and their two

daughters Elly and Tilly.

Welcome back to term 3. Our new Instructional Leader

has started this term. Cherie Hansen comes from

Bingara Central School. I’m looking forward to adding

someone with her experience as a Learning and

Support Teacher to our leadership team. Cherie will

play a key role in building staff skills and knowledge in

teaching and assessing literacy and numeracy across

both the primary and secondary years. She will also be

assisting us in further developing personalised learning

for students.

This week we have been celebrating Education Week. I

hope you were able to join us for our open day. The

theme for this year was ‘’I Learn, We Learn” and

celebrates the achievements of our students, educators

and communities. Each and every day I see the efforts

of our school community to ensure our students are

receiving personalised learning and striving for

improvement. In the coming weeks we will be starting to

develop a new school plan. Before we start a new plan,

however, we need to evaluate our current plan. The

staff have put together a survey for parents to contribute

to this evaluation. The link to the survey will be sent out

to the email on file. If you do not receive the link, you

can use the link below. It will only take you 5 minutes.

Parent/Caregiver and Student Assessment and

Reporting surveys.

Schools are required to regularly review other targeted

programs or practices each year. If these programs are

not part of their major targets or are minor in nature, a

less intensive form of evaluation may be appropriate.

Parents need to have a voice in the evaluation of

school programs. Their participation can be undertaken

through discussions at P&C meetings, individual

discussions, formal or informal focus groups or through

a survey. We have selected a survey for the parent and

secondary student voices.

Secondary students will be completing the survey

during school time. Parents/Caregivers will have the

opportunity to complete the survey in their own time.

Parents have two options in accessing the survey.

Option 1.

Copy the web address https://goo.gl/forms/

bD5ALcIqX6NjOtfz2 and access the survey,

Option 2

Visit the Warren Central School Facebook page and

access the survey via the link on our page.

We encourage as many responses as possible and the

feedback we receive will assist in future school plan-

ning.

Please complete by 18 August 2017.

All results are anonymous and we will give a written

report of the feedback for all to see.

We are holding a Scholastic Book Fair in the Library

from Monday 14 to Friday 18 August between the

hours of 8.30am-3.15pm. During the Book Fair your

children can purchase quality reading material. All

sales benefit our school library, enabling us to

purchase some great resources and books for your

children.

In this Jumbunna you will notice further information

regarding competitions, the Book Fair and the Book

Week assembly. No excuses for boredom over the

weekend! Encourage your children to have a go at one

of the activities! Great prizes are on offer!

If you have any queries regarding our Library please

contact Mrs Maclean or myself at any time.

August from 3:15 - 6pm in the school library. Please return

your interview sheet as soon as possible in order to get your

preferred time.

Netball Clinics

This term students in years 2 to 6 are participating in some

netball clinics. We have been fortunate to secure funding

through the sporting schools program in order to run these

clinics. Kindergarten and Year 1 were also lucky enough to

participate in an introduction clinic last Thursday. All the stu-

dents thoroughly enjoyed the clinic and learnt a lot of essen-

tial netball and ball skills. We are also organising some

touch football and rugby league clinics for this term.

Book Week

Book Week will be held in Week 5 with our exciting book

week parade and assembly being held on Thursday 17

August. We hope you have been busy thinking about your

English & HSIE

Term 3 This term presents our students with exciting opportunities to develop their knowledge and creativity in diverse ways. Year 7 are studying picture books and focusing on the concept of Point of View. They will look at different fairy tales and imagine how the story would change if the villain became the hero. Their task will be to create their own picture book based on a traditional story but giving their own twist to the tale. Stage 5 Green are exploring the world of poetry. They will be working on their folio task, choosing a poem to analyse, creating a narrative and discussing a topical issue. This assignment challenges students to evolve their skills and extend themselves. I’m looking forward to some good reading! Stage 5 Gold are doing Geography this semester and will be studying biomes and looking at sustainability. Stage 5 Green are doing History this semester and have begun to look at the Rights and Freedoms topic. Stage 5 Commerce are completing the ‘Running a Business’ unit where they will complete a portfolio and have to come up with a business idea, and then put that idea into practice and record results. The Year 11 Standard class are studying Drama in the form of the David Williamson Aussie classic, ‘The Club’, focusing on the robust, earthy dialogue of the football club. Year 11 Business Studies will be completing a Business Plan assessment task before getting ready for their Preliminary Examinations at the end of term. Year 11 Legal Studies are working on essay writing in order to form an argument on the effectiveness of law reform before completing their Preliminary Examinations later in the term. Year 12 Business Studies are winding up the Human Resources topic before getting ready for the Trial HSC examinations. The Year 12 CEC class will be exploring the world of travel; travel writing, blogs, brochures, planes, trains and automobiles, the experience of going from here to there. Students are to be encouraged to give themselves time to complete their assignments to the best of their ability and develop their confidence and skills.

Students have recently started on the topic “Japanese Food and Drink” and will spend most of the term on it. In this topic students extend their vocabulary knowledge of food written in hiragana (Japanese food) and katakana (Western style food). Students will learn what Japanese people actually eat and the benefits of one of the healthiest diets in the world. Being able to say what food they eat and don’t eat, what food they like and don’t like and how to order food at a restaurant are the key grammatical structures taught. We will also engage in chopstick relay races, use chopsticks to eat rice and participate in the wasabi challenge! In these photos students are playing my “Japanese version of snap”. They need to listen to the food said in Japanese, locate and “snap” the picture for it and then try and “snap” the vocabulary card by reading it in Japanese. It was a challenging game! Mrs Lovelock

They’re thoughtful and supportive, brave

and trustworthy, empathetic and kind.

They’ll lend a shoulder when you’re feeling

down, and there when you need them most

and will lift your spirits whether they’re near

or far.

Students comments in the playground:

They’re friendly.

They help you when you’re down.

Spending time together.

Playing with a friend is always fun.

Caring for each other.

Healthy Bones Action Week

The first week of August marks Healthy Bones Action Week

across the country. Healthy Harold and the Life Education

programs partner with schools to enhance and develop

messages about healthy eating and maintaining good health

and wellbeing. Through the programs, children not only

identify good foods, but learn about the physical impacts and

importance of nourishing their body. As almost 60 percent of 2

-16 year olds miss out on their daily recommended dairy

Intake, now is a good time to add an extra portion in their

lunchboxes! www.lifeeducation.org.au/dairy-nutrition-

andeducation

Healthy Harold celebrates Be MedicineWise Week (21-27

August, 2017)

As parents we need to make sure we are fully informed when

it comes to providing medicine to our children. When your

child is feeling unwell speak to your local pharmacist for

advice.

When you child says they feel sick, ask them where they feel

sick, what’s hurting to understand why they might be feeling ill,

before resorting to an analgesic. They may be dehydrated and

need to drink fluids, or have strained their eyes and need

some screen downtime and fresh air!

If you do need to give your child some medicine, after advice

from a pharmacist or doctor, help them to understand what a

medicine is, why you are giving it to them and that it needs to

be taken properly. Keep all medicines well out of the reach of

little hands. Let your child know that the medicine cupboard is

for adults only.

It's equally important for us to recognise our own practices,

and what we role model, when it comes to medicine use. Take

a few minutes to identify for yourself the reason you may have

a headache and look to alternatives such as having a rest,

drinking water or getting some fresh air rather than take

medicinal help first.

At Life Education, our Mind Your Medicine module helps mid-

dle and upper primary school children to understand that while

medicines can be helpful they can also be harmful if used

inappropriately. For more information, visit https://

www.lifeeducation.org.au/
