Message from ex WCS student Olivia Hamblin
Mrs Westgarth is easily the most hard working teacher I have ever had the privilege of
knowing. I was lucky enough to have her for Kindergarten, Year 5 & 6 and to this day I
know her passion for educating and challenging students had an incredible impact on
my life. She worked tirelessly to ensure her students were continually supported in
their strengths as well as dreams and always brought out the best in those she taught.
She encouraged me to dream big, and was just as much a role model and a mentor as
she was a fantastic teacher. Throughout my schooling life and beyond, I look back to
the incredible support and encouragement she gave me because it helps every time.
Her farewell message to me, "Shoot for the stars. You're sure to reach them." never
fails to inspire, even now.

into a comprehensive literacy program that includes
practise with decodable text as well as exposure to
literature with a rich vocabulary.
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, blend and
manipulate individual sounds in words. Children must
first understand that words are made up of separate
speech sounds that can be blended together to make
words before they can make sense of using the
alphabet to read and write. For example, if I ask you
how many sounds can you hear in ‘cat’, with good
phonemic awareness you would hear that it is made up
of 3 speech sounds c/a/t. This is a skill called
segmenting. If I were then to say the sounds d/o/g, and
ask what word you hear, with good phonemic
awareness you would be able to blend those sounds
together and tell me the word is dog. This is a skill
called blending.
We are very excited about having these new books.

Celebrating 150 Years of public education
This week sees the celebration of 150 years of public
education in Warren. It starts with an assembly on
Friday at 1.30pm, school tours then off to the Golf club.
Saturday sees our formal event getting underway from
6.30pm. Finishing off the weekend will be a breakfast at
Warren Services Club. What a great moment in the
history of Warren Central School.
School plan
We are currently undertaking planning for our new
school plan. So far we have run a survey for our current
school plan and a brainstorming session for ideas for
our new school plan. We are hoping to have a draft
available for review in the next couple of weeks. Thank
you for everyone’s support so far.
From the Principal
Lots of exciting things are happening at Warren Central
School in term 4. Teachers and students are busy
learning and I would like to commend the positive
behaviour of our students. Teachers are also busy
planning for 2018 and looking at ways to improve
student learning. There has been some great
professional learning
occurring that will benefit all students.
New Decodable Readers
One area that I am really excited about is the work
happening to improve the quality of our literacy
programs. We have recently purchased 800 new
decodable readers to support us in delivering quality
instruction of reading here at Warren Central School.
Explicit teaching of phonics is a cornerstone of effective
early reading instruction. Around one third of children
will have difficulty learning to read without systematic
teaching in how to ‘crack the code’ of written English,
and another third will not learn to read at all without it.

NAIDOC
On Thursday 12 October the students, staff and community celebrated the NAIDOC
activities at WCS.
The day started with a smoking ceremony, performed by Lachie Dennis and his team.
Students then participated in a variety of activities, which included dance workshops, Aboriginal art, Dreamtime stories
and talk about Bush Tucker throughout the day.
The Secondary students also took part in an interactive trivia based on Aboriginal culture called Kahoot. This activity
was very successful and really stretched our student’s cultural knowledge.
K-6 students were also involved in cultural activities prior to this day; they included bead threading, NAIDOC mugs,
cultural research projects, Aboriginal art, bangles and much more.
Thank you to Ms Rush and her small band of Aboriginal students who took the time to gather and set the questions for
the activity/event.
Thank you to all Staff who actively helped to celebrate our NAIDOC. Ms Oates and Mrs Hawkes in particular should be
congratulated on their wonderful organisation of the day.
A great
day was
had by all.

From the Deputy
Principal
Attendance is crucial in the development of your child. We
encourage you to ensure that your child attends school
every day possible so they can continue to grow and de-
velop their educational abilities and socialisation skills. If
your child is absent would you please contact the school
by phone or in writing to explain their absence so we can
monitor the attendance
of your child.
Remember; the greater the attendance the greater the
results for your child.
We have had staff trained in MiniLit and Macqlit to focus
on the literacy needs of our students. Below is the outline
and overview of the programs.
We as a staff see the importance of literacy in our students
and the need to ensure that we can assist and develop all
of our students in the area of literacy.
MiniLit
MiniLit is an evidence-based, effective early literacy pro-
gram. It is a practical, systematic, explicit and effective
model for teaching reading skills.
MiniLit is a Tier Two school-based small group program
(up to four students per group) within a Response to Inter-
vention Framework.
MiniLit is an integrated and balanced program of 80
carefully structured lessons, divided into two levels of forty
lessons each:
Level 1: Teaching the basics of letter/sound knowledge
and decoding skills for CVC words
Level 2: Extending word attack knowledge by teaching
commonly used digraphs and longer words
Program Overview
The program takes around 20 weeks to complete, with four
lessons of up to 60 minutes per week. Each lesson com-
prises three main components:
Sounds and Words Activities
Text Reading
Story Book Reading
The decodable readers have been written to provide chil-
dren with practice in working out words in connected text
using their phonic knowledge.
MacqLit
MacqLit provides teachers with a comprehensive se-
quence of lessons that includes all the key components
necessary for effective reading instruction: phonemic
awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehen-
sion.
Program overview
Readers develop rapid, automatic and efficient word
recognition strategies. The primary focus of MacqLit is on
phonics, or word Identification, supported by connected
text reading to ensure skills are generalised to authentic
reading experiences.
The carefully constructed sequence of lessons teaches
essential skills such as:
Letter-sound correspondences presented in an easy to
hard sequence,
Strategies for decoding multi-syllable words,
Prefixes and suffixes,
Generalising component skills through connected text
reading.
Each lesson is designed to last one hour, and is delivered
four times a week.
Students are given extensive opportunities to practise their
skills by reading one-on-one with a tutor for 20 minutes,
daily. Student progress is monitored through regular cumu-
lative reviews built into the program.
School Counsellor
We are fortunate enough at WCS to have access to the
departments counselling services which is available to all
students at WCS. Our counsellor is able to assist with stu-
dents issues that they may be trying to deal with on their
own.
This is a free service and very well received by the
stu- dents
who attend
the ses-
sions. If
you feel

Instructional
Leader Update
As I’m sure you are all aware I have been working at WCS in the Instructional Leaders role since the beginning of last term. As a part of this role it is my job to work with staff and students to continue to strive for improved results in all areas. This term we have introduced Progressive Achievement Testing across the school from Year 1 right through to Year 10 to allow us to see where our students lie in the areas of reading comprehension, mathematics, spelling, grammar and punctuation and vocabulary development. This allows us to compare our students results to similar cohorts across the country and also identify specific areas of need so that teaching can be specifically tailored to meet student needs. We have also identified writing as a particular area of focus for improvement in our school so this week I am attending a training course for a program called Seven Steps for Writing Success which I will then be training all staff to implement within their classrooms over the coming months. This program is designed by an actual author and has seen great improvement in the overall NAPLAN writing results of schools who have implemented it in recent years. More information on the
‘Seven Steps’ will be forthcoming over the remainder of this term and into next year.

All children deserve to lead safe and healthy lives
2017’s Children’s Week National (21-29 October) theme is ‘Education should develop each child’s personality and
talents to the full. It should encourage children to respect their parents, their cultures and other cultures’ (UNCRC
Article 29). Life Education believes that all children deserve to lead safe and healthy lives. By placing preventive
education at the core of our work we want to instil in children the confidence to make safer and healthier choices now
and in the future. Our program today reaches over 640,000 children across all seven states in Australia, with over 100
mobile learning centres and 95 specially trained educators. By getting involved with Life Education, you are helping us

“Agri-Robotics Day”
Robotics has been an integral part of the advances in technology that has made significant
impact in medicine, engineering and agriculture with huge advantages over performing tasks
manually.
On 19 October, 14 students from Years 8, 9 and 10 participated in the Agri- Robotics day organised by the Universi-
ty of Sydney. This event was significant for the students as they used computer programming and coding for the first
time to instruct the robot to perform simple tasks.
The robot could be programmed to perform functions, such as moving forwards, backwards or at angle using
distance and directional sensors. They could be used to identify plants from the ground level and programmed to
spray chemicals on plants using a spray tank loaded onto the robot. The students were presented with the challenge
of writing programs that could perform such a function.
The University of Sydney program was being made into a documentary by ABC Catalyst to look at the impact of
technology in Agricultural practices in the near future. The filming crew had been interviewing farmers around the
Central Western regions followed by Warren Central School’s interest in developing technologies that could help the
farmers in the near future. The ABC catalyst documentary will be aired later around February showing the impact of
incorporating programs in schools to develop technologies in the future.
It was all exciting as students were learning something new and being part of a documentary as well. The University

staff were

Love Bites
LOVE BITES is an extremely successful school-based Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault prevention program which particularly focuses on reducing the violence against women.
Over 100,000 high school students throughout Australia have participated in this interactive and innovative program aimed at 14 -16yr olds. Students from Years 9 and 10 participated in the program at Warren Central School on Tuesday 9 October 2017.
The LOVE BITES program consists of two interactive education workshops on Domestic and Family Violence and Sexual Assault followed by creative workshops that consolidate the information from the morning. The program was facilitated by Senior Constables Craig Skein and Mardie Paice, the Police Youth Liaison Officers for our school, Jess Locke and Fleur Stubbs from Barnados, who also generously supplied a BBQ lunch for the students.
A huge thank you is extended to the facilitators for their presentation and congratulations to the students who actively participated and demonstrated our core values of respectful, responsible learners.
