Before there were simulators like the Redbird there was the ATC-510

A little bit about the ATC-510 simulator at N13:
The ATC-510 was created in the 1970's. This was one of the first affordable personal flight
simulator devices. The successor to the ATC-510 was the ATC-610. The difference between these two
devices is that the 510 is time-based whereas the 610 is position based. What that means is that the
510 requires the pilot to select different frequencies and transponder codes at certain points during an
instrument approach to alert the unit that a specific point (such as the final approach fix) has been
reached. The 610 was available with an optional plotter that would show on a map where the plane was
currently located and could optionally plot the flight with a pen. Many years ago it was common for
these devices to be used in concentrated Instrument Rating courses in which an instructor would come
to you and spend two weeks flying with you by day and allowing you to practice on the ATC at night.
Both of these ATC units came with a set of Flight Assignment Tapes that would describe various
instrument training tasks including short flights between airports and instrument approaches. The
simulators can also be used in a free flight mode, and perform canned ILS, Localizer, Localizer Back
Course, and NDB approaches.
The ATC-510 at N13 belongs to the Parlor City Flying Club. It was recently resurrected from
storage and verified to be in working order. This has been placed in the conference room for use by
anyone that so desires. There are a few pages that describe how to use this simulator in free flight or in
any of the approaches listed above without using the Flight Assignment Tapes and associated
charts. There is also a collection of Flight Assignment Tapes and associated charts below the simulator
for those that wish to use them. You will need to bring your own cassette tape player to use these.
You might ask what you could do with this simulator. Firstly, you can certainly have a little fun
flying some vintage hardware. Secondly, if you are instrument rated or an instrument student, you can
use the ATC-510 to practice your instrument scan. Thirdly, this may be one of the few ways to practice
NDB approaches. The need to fly these approaches has virtually disappeared with the advent of GPS
and with NDB's being retired as they fail. However, just like DME arcs, flying NDB approaches can be a
good skill builder. Finally, believe it or not you can actually log time on this device. If you are working
on your instrument rating, you can log up to ten hours of time on this device provided you fly it with a
CFII (Certificated Flight Instructor-Instrument Airplane) present. You can even log up to fifty hours
toward your Commercial Pilot license, again if you fly with a CFII. It is important to note that the ten and
fifty- hour limits are for all simulators combined (Redbird, ATC-510, etc.).
I hope everyone enjoys our new conversation piece
