JNUSU reporting on the protest demo held in front of Dean of Students office

JNUSU congratulates the student community for participating in large numbers for todays Protest

Demo in front of the Dean of Students office. For a long time now the hallmark of the functioning

of the DOS has been completely arbitrary, undemocratic and highhanded decision making. This

has been seen in several issues from eviction of two students from Yamuna Hostel, continuousdelay in starting mess facilities and sticking to the centralized system of single seater allotment.

Today after the protest demonstration the JNUSU representative met the Associate Dean to discuss

    our demands.

By the 17th of October a hostel list of around 250 student will be released.

JNUSU demanded that an IHA meeting be called immediately. It was communicated to the

JNUSU that the Dean of Students is currently abroad and the issue will discussed on

Monday when he is back. JNUSU demands that an IHA meeting be called without any

    further delay.

Regarding the centralized pooling system of single seaters the Associate Dean said that

they place this in the agenda of the IHA meeting. JNUSU categorically demands the

immediate scrapping of this system and restoration of the old system of single seater

    allotment.

Regarding the arbitrary fines imposed in Mahanadi Hostel a survey would be conducted on

the basic necessities of the residents and only after that in consultation with JNUSU and

residents of Mahanadi would any decision be taken on electricity charges

The administration has agreed to appoint a full time caterer for providing three mealsto the residents of SPS Dormitory. Moreover a tab would be kept on quality and rates by

JNUSU representatives and the residents of SPS dormitory. Till a full time caterer is

appointed the residents of SPS dormitory can take their meals in either Narmada,

Kaveri or Periyar at any time by producing their i-card.

Eventually a full fledged mess facility would be started in SPS Dormitory and the

    Dormitory would be extended.

All fee hikes and eviction orders in Yamuna Hostel have been put in abeyance till the

next discussion on the matter. JNU will not tolerate any fee hike or evictions in YamunaHostel or any other hostel in the campus.

JNUSU strongly communicated to the administration that it will not tolerated any form of

moral policing or any attempts to restrict and monitor the movement of girl students in

boys hostels. JNUSU appeals to all the girls not to sign in any register before entering any

    boys hostel.

The DoS office had arbitrarily stopped allowing mutual exchange of students from

different courses. After JNUSUs strong protest and intervention Associate Dean

assured JNUSU that the old mutual exchange rules will be followed.

In the days to come the student community has to ensure that the JNU administration lives up to

the promises made to the JNUSU. Also we have to remain vigilant against any attempts of feehike, imposing user charges, moral policing, undemocratic functioning of hostel administration and

unite to restore and revive the IHA as a democratic decision making body. We appeal to the

student community strengthen all of JNUSUs initiatives in future.
