JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

Last Saturday a dedicated “crew” of parents and children came to assist in a tidy-up of the school grounds in readiness for this weekend’s Autumnfest fete. Many thanks to representatives of the Acs, Ahlert (winner of the Hoyts cinema tickets raffle), Baklien, Baugh, Block, Clarkson, Coldebella Collins, Conman, Curl, Davidson, Foley, Gallagher, Hare, Heaney, Smith, Treacy, Wines and York families, with appreciation of the work of staff members Gay Burnett and Ewan McAllister. AUTUMNFEST – 2 SLEEPS TO GO!

See you on Saturday!

BLPS TURNS 50! As well as our Autumnfest Fete this Saturday, we also celebrate the opening of Blackburn Lake Primary School 50 years ago. 13 March 2014

I wish to acknowledge outgoing School Councillors Rowena Morrow, Nadine Mathieson, Shari Lo Presti, Ewan McAllister and Loisia Steed’s contributions to Blackburn Lake Primary School in the capacity of members of Council. As well as congratulating Maya Cordiero, Dean Conman and Vivienne Saunders on their re-election, I welcome Lisa Croxford, Jessica Hare, Allison Duffy, David Dowson and Natasha Chidgey to Council without ballot. The first meeting for the new Council will take place next Tuesday 18th March at 7:30pm. Our school’s Annual Report (2013) will be presented to the school community at 7.30pm. This meeting will take place in the Library and all parents in our school community are welcome and encouraged to attend. Immediately following this AGM at approximately 8.00pm, our newly formed School Council (above) will convene for their first meeting of the year to elect office bearers. Our first School Council Meeting, with our newly elected members, will then discuss the school’s 2013 Annual Report in conjunction with the School’s 2013 Annual Implementation Plan. Once again, I thank our School Councillors (and indeed all community volunteers) for their valuable contributions towards improving the outcomes for the children of Blackburn Lake Primary School.

RIDE 2 SCHOOL DAY

Next Wednesday, the 19th of March is the National Ride2School Day where over 250,000 Australian

students will ride, walk or scoot to school, many for the first time. Riding to school is a great way to be active and health, and we support our students to walk or wheel to school because:

Students feel fresh and alert at the beginning of a school day;

There are fewer cars around the school which eases ‘drop off’ congestion;

Students are more likely to reach the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity they need each day;

Students feel happier, healthier and perform better in the classroom. At Blackburn Lake Primary School it is our aim to have over 100 students to either walk, ride, skate or scoot to school on this day. Remember – if you ride, skate or scoot to school you need to wear the correct safety gear to keep safe. I hope to see you at tomorrow’s whole school Assembly @ 3pm to acknowledge our ‘Students of the Week’, as well as seeing you on Saturday at Autumnfest (with fingers crossed for good weather!) Regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected]

SCHOOL BASED PROGRAMS

BLACKBURN LAKE NAB AFL AUSKICK CENTRE BLACKBURN LAKE PRIMARY SCHOOL OVAL - ALL VERY WELCOME!

Yes, it’s time for 2014 Auskick enrolments again!

The NAB AFL Auskick ”Rookie" program has been designed for children aged five to eight years (Kinder age upwards). It ensures that all children develop the fundamental skills required to participate in Australian Football. Children participate in activities designed to improve their various skills of the game, followed by a modified ‘Grid’ game in an environment which safely allows children to put into practice their Australian Football skills.

All Auskick participants in Victoria must now register and pay online at www.aflauskick.com.au and if you do so before SUNDAY 13TH APRIL 2014 you will be allocated 2 x children tickets and 2x adult tickets to an AFL match during the 2014 AFL Home & Away Season. The cost for 13 sessions is only $70.00 (that’s just around $5 a session) and includes a backpack filled with great goodies. Our Auskick Welcome Day at Blackburn Lake Primary School will be on Saturday 5th April (the first Saturday of the Term 1 school break). Please arrive by 9.00am to collect your Auskick pack as we will be running our annual In-House Auskick Level 0 Course straight after at 9.30am. We expect our Auskick Level 0 Course to run through to 11.00am and is open to all our Auskick parents. Kids can have free play during this time to kick the footys and maybe play some games. Our subsequent Saturday morning sessions start 9.00am sharp and go through to 10.30am. Please note that due to school and public holiday long weekends over April, our first Auskick Session after our Auskick Welcome Day / Level 0 Course won’t then be until Saturday 3rd May.
