I hope that you all had an enjoyable break from the normal school routine and are well rested, ready for another eventful term. I was lucky enough to spend some time with my family, taking the family caravan to Daylesford. JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message

Welcome back! I hope that you all had an enjoyable break from the normal school routine and are well rested, ready for another eventful term. I was lucky enough to spend some time with my family, taking the family caravan to Daylesford. The cool weather didn’t stop outdoor adventures (such as bike riding and kicking the football) but it also gave the opportunity to undertake indoor activities (playing board games and watching the many sports on offer). The highlight for me was camping outside at night, and toasting marshmallows on an open fire. CLASS VISIT – 3S’ LITERACY BLOCK

When joining Suellen and Farah (along with Teacher Aide Gay Burnett) this week, 3S “tuned in” to Literacy learning with a game of 4 Pics 1 Word – an iPad app. The rotational activities that followed were cleverly planned to build upon last term’s inquiry topic of ‘Our Living Planet’ whilst also connecting to the current activity of Swimming.

The children of 3S know the routines of the classroom and this optimizes learning. One group worked on desktop computers to complete a PhotoStory presentation on an endangered animal, with another ICT task being the use of iPads (using Popplet) to brainstorm Swimming (whether it be animals that can swim, equipment we need to swim, or famous swimmers).

As well as being impressed with the computer skills of the students, it was clear to see scaffolding (links to previous work) being made and creation of new learning. I congratulate Suellen and all BLPS teachers for their careful planning. It is important that teachers make explicit for students what they are going to learn, and the “learning intention” (or objective) for a lesson is a statement that describes clearly what the teacher wants the students to a) know, b) understand and c) be able to do as a result of the learning and teaching activities. During “share time” at the end of the session it was evident that the children could see the purpose of the tasks and make authentic connections with previous skills and knowledge. Well done 3S! PLANNING WEEK This week teams of teachers have been released to plan together this term’s lessons, aiming to improve Literacy and Numeracy outcomes, as well as Integrated Studies (inquiry) units of work – with all levels across the school this term investigating Communication. The Prep team will be planning tomorrow, with our usual specialist timetable (Art, Italian, Music and Physical Education) resuming next week. Level specific Parent Planners (teaching team newsletters) will be distributed soon to outline term three team curriculum and priorities. INTENSIVE SWIMMING PROGRAM

Earlier this week I visited the Nunawading Aquatic Centre and witnessed the students fully immersed in their lessons. I congratulate the children on their organisation that is required when attending swimming sessions (and also parents for packing bags and labelling belongings). Thank you also to Phil Lumsden for his thorough Coordination of this program which complements our Health and Physical Education program at Blackburn Lake Primary School.

ROUTINES An article in the Herald-Sun last month spoke about the importance of sleep for maintaining good health and achievement at school. The report points to a recent epidemic of poor sleep routines amongst school-aged children and the significant impact this can have on learning and wellbeing. Unfortunately, we see firsthand the outcomes of poor sleep routines here at school, with some children coming to school after weekends and barely having enough energy to stay awake in class. Some children have recently reported to their teachers that they were up all night playing video games or watching a movie in their bedroom on school nights. As a baseline for success at school, experts recommend the following for primary school aged children:

• Establishing and maintaining a regular bedtime routine, including on weekends and during school

holidays – this should include no screen time after the evening meal and bath time, story time / wind-

down time for up to 1 hour before tuck in time;

• A calm and excitement-free home environment after evening meal time;

• Avoid drinks containing caffeine (eg. Coke, and energy drinks) as caffeine takes approximately 9

hours to leave the system and affects the quality of sleep;

• Between 10-11 hours’ sleep each night for children 5-12 years of age – tuck in time between 7:00-

8:30pm.

The beginning of the new term brings the opportunity of setting goals to maximise learning opportunities. (The Herald-Sun article can be found at: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/childrens-tiredness-in-school-hours-a-wake-up-call-for-parents/story-fni0fiyv-1226663436120 with more information available at: http://raisingchildren.net.au/). I hope to see you at our whole school Assembly @ 3pm tomorrow, where we will acknowledge our Students of the Week - with certificates for Prep B, Prep E, 2D and 3K recipients to be presented next week (as these children will still be at swimming at this time). Regards, Jason Walker - Principal [email protected] (Please note in family calendars the morning of Sunday 28th July for our next Working Bee – with more information about tasks in next week’s Lakeside News).

ART ARTICLES

In Art for the two weeks of Swimming the Year 2 – 6 students are doing a unit of work on ‘Claude Monet’. You are no doubt aware there is a major exhibition of his work currently showing at the National Gallery of Victoria. It would be wonderful if your child could go and visit the NGV to see this show. Could I also suggest that you give you child a sketch pad, pencil and rubber and let them sit in front of a painting of their choosing and sketch it. Happy drawing Johanna McPhail

SUPER SPORTS REPORT

HELP!! I am still missing a set of bottle green basketball tops with white trim and numbers. They were borrowed in term 3 last year. One of our new after-school teams used them while their tops were being made. I think the children were from grade 2. If you know which team used them could you let me know as soon as possible. We will need them for Hooptime in June! Phil L PE / Sports Coordinator

New hoops! Our new Basketball Towers complete with Basketball Hoops and Backboards, plus Netball Rings, were installed over the school holidays. The proceeds from our Chocolate Drive were a significant contribution to their purchase and installation. The kids are already having a fabulous time enjoying them. We estimate that we raised over $3000 from the Drive – thank you for all your selling efforts.

Chocolate money due now Chocolate money and any unsold chocolates are due back now. Please place the money in the PA Mailbox in the school office foyer.

What else is new around the school? You might have noticed there has been some improvement of the school grounds going on over the last few months. This includes a new Amphitheatre, landscaping around the Amphitheatre including a new bridge, and renovations to the sand pit. These improvements have been put in place by the school’s Facilities Sub-committee and have been funded by the

Parents’ Association. The Facilities Sub-committee is planning other improvements to the school and the PA will be considering requests for funding. If you’d like to be involved, come along to the next meeting which is on Tuesday, 6 August 2013.

Helping friends

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FOR OUR SCHOOL’S PA

Blacky Lake’s Parent’s Association meets every one or two months, with meeting times set out in the school newsletter. Any parents or carers are welcome to attend these meetings.

We appreciate however that some parents find attending meetings hard to commit to, when juggling work and/or looking after kids.

That’s why we’ve established a register of Helping Friends who have expressed interest in helping out now and then. We will then email you when the events you are interested in come up.

The suggestions below are a mixture of events we run during the school week, as well as the weekend, so everyone – mums, dads, grandparents - can get involved.

Does this sound like your family? If so, please complete this form and drop it in the PA mailbox in the school foyer.

I’d like to:

o Help at Icy-pole Fridays one lunchtime in terms 1 or 4

o Help collate school banking money one Wednesday morning a month

o Help sell icypoles and snacks on a Monday at lunchtime once or twice during the year

o Help at a monthly ‘special food day’ lunch e.g. sushi, sausage sizzle, hot dog day and footy pies

o Help at the Mothers’ Day Stall one morning in May

o Volunteer for a two hour shift at a sausage sizzle during the year, usually on weekends

Page 8: JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message · JASON’S JOURNAL – The Principal’s Message Welcome back! I hope that you all had an enjoyable break from the normal school

o Help sell tickets for an event

o Help out at one Milo Friday morning in July or August

o Pack chocolates for the Chocolate Drive mid year (can be after hours)

o Help out at the Fathers’ Day stall in September

o Help out at our Election Day stall at the school on Saturday, 14 September

o Help out at the Christmas Stall one morning in December

o I’m happy to help at weekend events, just tell me when & where

o I have a skill that could help the PA and the school (e.g. building, marketing, fundraising, organising, photography, landscaping, painting, plumbing, electrical, etc.)

o I have organised an event or fundraiser before and I’d like to do it again for BLPS

o Come along to a PA meeting

o Find out more about coordinating an event for the PA

o Be on your email list of ‘helping friends’ to be contacted when help is needed

DROUGHT AND FLOODING RAINS

Blackburn Lake Primary School

As a young scientist and naturalist, you need to know all about Australia and why the land is the way it is. Australia has experienced ten – fifteen years of severe drought and in the last three years flooding rains have come. Get a feel for the “bush”, the great outback, and our water challenges in Australia. Learn “My Country” and see how it tells about our country that is so different from where most people came from originally. Match photos to the ideas in the poem. Learn to read weather maps and compare predictions with the reality. What do you believe? Who was Albert Namatjira and what did he do? Can we do what he did? Develop your memory, gain new words to use, write your own poem and create a painting. Why do we need “mateship” more than most? WiseOnes Application for 3rd Term 2013 This program is available for all Grade 1 - Grade 6 children who have qualified for WiseOnes. The unit for third term commences week beginning Monday, 22

Treehouse Is your child uncomfortable in social situations? Does your child worry about making a mistake or being embarrassed in front of others? Does your child sometimes sit alone at lunchtimes/avoid interacting with classmates? Does your child not want to participate in after-school activities?

Treehouse is a therapeutic play-based program for primary-school aged children, who need some extra support with social skills, self-esteem, managing strong feelings and developing resilience. By being creative and learning through play, children are able to develop their relationship skills in a non-confrontational way, while also allowing them to safely think about how they might cope with their own worries.
