Led by Founder and Artistic Director Patrick Dupré Quigley, Seraphic Fire brings top ensemble singers and instrumentalists from around the country to perform repertoire ranging from Gregorian chant and Baroque masterpieces to Mahler and newly commissioned works by this country’s leading composers . Two of the ensemble’s recordings, Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem and A Seraphic Fire Christmas, were nominated for 2012 GRAMMY® Awards, making Seraphic Fire the only choral ensemble in North or South America to be nominated that year and the only classical ensemble in the world to be nominated for two separate projects .

Seraphic Fire continues to put South Florida at the center of artistic innovation during its 2017 - 2018 Season through masterworks of cultural significance like Brahms’ timeless Liebeslieder Waltzes, as well as through high-quality under-performed music like David Lang’s the little match girl passion . Guest appearances include collaborations with Lorelei Ensemble Artistic Director Beth Willer and Boston’s Back Bay Chorale Music Director Scott Allen Jarrett .

Recognized for its “spellbinding, hypnotic” sound (South Florida Classical Review), Seraphic Fire’s artistic accomplishments have also translated to orchestral collaborations with The Cleveland Orchestra and New World Symphony, and chart-topping album sales . The ensemble’s September 2014 release, Reincarnations: A Century of American Choral Music, soared to No .6 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart and the ensemble’s recording of Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem debuted at No .7 on the Billboard Traditional Classical Chart .

PROGRAM NOTES

J. S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion: Evolution from Liturgical to Concert Work

Dear Friends in the Audience,

While I normally eschew program notes in favor of speaking from the stage during the concert, I feel that with such a significant work as Johann Sebastian Bach’s Matthäus-Passion (affectionately known in the American music-making world as the “Matt Passion”), a note about some of our performance decisions is in order .

This is Seraphic Fire’s first time performing St. Matthew Passion and typically with a work of this magnitude, there is an authoritative method for how the piece should be performed . In the case of St. Matthew Passion, however, the work’s history requires us to make choices about what and how we choose to perform this masterpiece .

There are at least two surviving versions in Bach’s hand of the Matt Passion (three, if one counts the same material used for the 1729 funeral cantata for Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen) . The most often performed version is the one from 1736: Bach’s final revision following a number of performances in Leipzig . This is the version with which we all are probably most familiar, as it has often been performed in South Florida by professional and amateur forces alike .

But, this is not the initial way Bach conceived the work . The first performance of the Matt Passion was likely on April 11, 1727, and that premiere was vastly different than the “final” version we all know . This “original” version of the Matt Passion included hallmarks such as a smaller group of performers, different assignment of vocal parts, and different evangelist recitatives . So tonight, our first choice is to honor that “world premiere” by using the orchestration that the Leipzig Thomas Church congregation heard when the piece was first performed .

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847)

J . S . B A C H : S T . M A T T H E W P A S S I O N | 1 1

Leipzig authorities demanded that the Biblical text of the Passion be performed in its entirety when Bach began composing this passion . This rule was in contrast to the truncated Biblical text found in Barthold Heinrich Brockes’s prevailing libretto of the day, which was used by composers like Telemann and Handel . Therefore, Bach used the entirety of the biblical Passion with meditations by the librettist Picander, and interspersed popular hymn (“chorale”) tunes that would have been intimately familiar to Bach’s Lutheran congregation . The complete work was actually performed as the central component of the Lutheran Good Friday liturgy, complete with congregation singing and a lengthy sermon between the two acts of the Passion .

Yet, when we perform this work for a contemporary audience, it is simply not enough to recreate a liturgical ceremony from the Baroque era . In fact, tonight’s performance is definitively secular in nature: held in a non-Lutheran venue within a concert setting, rather than as part of a sacred liturgy, and with a 21st Century audience that has a much different concept of what is both dramatically and socially acceptable than Bach’s congregation

would have understood . So, we are faced with a work out of its element, being performed for a different purpose than originally intended . How do we resolve this dissonance? Fortunately, the hard issues reconciling a sacred work with a post-Enlightenment secular presentation were solved more than 150 years ago when Felix Mendelssohn—largely responsible for the introduction of the liturgical music of Bach to the concert stage—revived the work in Berlin as a concert piece .

Mendelssohn made substantial libretto changes for that initial Berlin performance to reflect that Bach’s St. Matthew Passion was being performed as a concert work (an Oratorio, per se) rather than a liturgical work, and to adjust his audience’s more inclusive philosophies .

Bach’s 18th Century Lutheran congregates were decidedly dismissive toward Judaism; for some, pejorative . As such, to Mendelssohn’s theologically diverse audience of preeminent 19th Century German Enlightenment figures, the liturgical libretto would have been untenable . That Berlin concert audience would not have been exclusively Lutheran or even exclusively Christian, as German Jews had been assimilating into mainstream cultural society and regularly attended concerts with their Christian neighbors . To mitigate 18th Century anti-Semitic elements of the work, Mendelssohn removed a number of chorales, arias, and recitatives; the exact number fluctuated throughout the various revivals that Mendelssohn mounted in his lifetime .

PROGRAM NOTES

It is important to understand that although he descended from an influential Jewish family, Mendelssohn and his sister were baptized Lutheran at an early age by their Jewish parents to avoid some of the lingering anti-Jewish sentiment . Despite his baptism, he never lost the connection to his Jewish roots, particularly his Jewish grandparents, which helped motivate his desire for a more inclusive Matthew Passion .

Additionally, the piece’s original setting (the Good Friday service of the Lutheran Church) regularly lasted much longer than a standard 19th Century concert, often in excess of three hours . So, Mendelssohn tightened the dramatic content for the concert stage, shortening da capo arias (arias with a distinct A and B section, traditionally followed by a repeat of the A section), which aligned them closer to the contemporary Romantic dramatic ideal .

Thus, 100 years after its previous performance, it was in this more secular-dramatic form that the Matt Passion was ecstatically received by the German cultural cognoscenti, launching the work to the highest echelon of standard Western concert repertoire . As it was Mendelssohn who re-introduced the world to the music of the St. Matthew Passion, it will be Mendelssohn’s libretto that we use tonight under similar circumstances as the concert premiere: a secular performance for a secular audience in a contemporary era when ideas about the treatment of the Jewish people in public life has changed drastically since the 18th Century .

Both the music and the libretto represent “firsts” for St. Matthew Passion, and we hope that in this presentation you might sense some of the revolutionary nature that Mendelssohn’s audience experienced in its centennial revival .

Evangelist:When Jesus had completed this speech, he said to his disciples:

Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben, von einer Sünde weiß er nichts .Daß das ewige Verderbenund die Strafe des Gerichtsnicht auf meiner Seele bleibe .

Evangelist:The governor said:

Pilate:What evil has he done?

He has done good to us all,he gave sight to the blind,he made the lame walk, he told us his Father’s word,he drove the devil away,He has raised up the wretched; He received and sheltered the sinners .My Jesus has done nothing else .

My Savior is willing to die out of love,he knows nothing of sin .So that the eternal ruinand the punishment of judgmentdo not remain in my soul .

“I’m exceptionally grateful to be a part of Seraphic Fire’s Ensemble Artist Program. In the months leading up to this season, I battled physical and emotional fallout from a motorcycle accident that nearly claimed my life. Making music as part of this program has become as integral to my recovery as my physical therapy, and I look forward to creating beautiful art among America’s finest musicians.”

Garrett Schoonover, Bass

Seraphic Fire’s Ensemble Artist Program at UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music provides season-long vocal ensemble training to undergraduate and graduate voice students at UCLA . Participating artists are chosen through competitive auditions chaired by Artistic Director Patrick Dupré Quigley and Director of Education James K . Bass . This collaboration aims to help UCLA’s emerging professional singers discover outlets for professional employment while fulfilling Seraphic Fire’s educational mission to encourage the occupational advancement of musicians .

Seraphic Fire’s Ensemble Artist Program at UCLA is supported in part by the Dunspaugh-Dalton Foundation.
