Use the term “IWB’s”• Interactive Whiteboards (IWB’s) is the term

used to refer to a Smartboard, Promethean board, Mimeo or any other brand name of interactive whiteboard.

Research

• In his book Interactive Whiteboards, A practical guide for primary teachers, Peter Kent clarifies that an IWB is not a substitute for inadequate teaching but allows a teacher of quality to reach their full potential in creating a successful interactive learning environment.

Smartboard

• Uses Notebook software (latest version is Notebook 14 and saves as a .nbk file)

• Vendor for NYC is Teq (check out their site for tutorials and professional development)

Do not use it as a projection system!

• If you are left with nothing else, an interactive whiteboard requires interaction by students.

• I included a picture of “bubble wrap” to remind you of how we all enjoy the tactile experience of popping bubble wrap!

Add videos from YouTube

• At home, find the URL of a YouTube video• Open keepvid.com• Paste the YouTube URL• Download as a .flv file (flash video file) and

Insert-VideoFile into the Notebook software• Save your file – no streaming issues – no

internet issues

Add interactive games

• Whatever content area you are teaching, search using keywords, “interactive” “interactive games” along with your content area keywords.

• Allow either pen or your finger to become the “mouse”.

• Can be installed at varying heights for your students

• Smart also offers a “Smart Table” for younger students.

• Uses ActivInspire software• Promethean Planet offers lessons, resources
