The Board of Directors of the Sanibel-Captiva Planning Board want to be certainthat all islanders and interested persons are aware of a public hearing on September"» 1972.
This will be a hearing at the Court House in the Commissioners hearing room atlUa.m. on September 13. It will be fore the purpose of publically discussing theestablishment of a Sanibel-Captiva Sewer District. This will be the time and place tobecome informed on one of the major projects contemplated for the islands.
The financing of this project will be discussed later, in November when many ofthe residents have returned to the islands.

Michael is Jeanne'sbrother , and the Spears brought alongsome friends , the BROOKSFAULKNER family from Nashville,too, and everybody has been soaking upsome sun and relaxing in betweensightseeing in and around Fort Myers.
The new manager of the CastawaysRestaurant is working feverishly to getthe restaurant in order for a Labor Dayopening. He is MR. JACK ROBERTSwho is well-known in the FortLauderdale area as manager of theSunrise Country Club. The Roberts owna home on Fort Myers Beach and havebeen coming down for week-ends ofrelaxation.
GEORGE WATTERSON will beattending the Miami showing of Giftitems and purchasing a new and excitinggroup of goodies, while he leaves hisgood wife home to mind the store. TheWattersons just returned from a trip tothe Keys where they did some plain andfancy skin diving and got to know a fewcreatures like Moray eels, barracuda,sharks, etc.
MR.AND MRS. DANIEL MERLINand daughter HEATHER from WalpoleMass, are down visiting their mother andfather, Mr. and Mrs. JAMES F.MURPHY of Captiva. They will be herea few weeks sight- seeing and exploringthe beaches and fishing.
And at long last we found out thename of the beautiful white bloomingtree in the dooryard of the Red Pelican.Thanks to SARITA VAN VLECK, whotells us it is a Jamaica Dogwood.
Visitors to the By The Sea Cottagesare KRIST ARDIS, who has beenvacationing on the island since 1961, andBERNICE GRIMM who has beenresorting here for twenty-five yearsfrom Hollywood, Fla. And also fromHollywood is ELIZABETH MACY, whois fast becoming acclimated and anisland lover too. All are friends ofEDITH MUGRIDGE, and Krist is fromRomulus .Michigan.

Labor Day weekend will bring backsome old guests as well as greet somenew ones. MR. and MRS. ROBERTJENNER of Fort Lauderdale are herefor two weeks of relaxation. MR. andMRS. STANLEY YABLONSKY alsofrom Fort Lauderdale and the FRANKPROCTAS of near-by Plantation arehere for a few days before schoolresumes. Also from the east coast arethe MICHAEL FERGUSON family ofTitusville, MR. and MRS. PAROBECKof Miramar and the JAMES NELSONparty of Miami.
And now for the sad story of theweek. EDITH MUGRIDGE had to haveloveable little poodle CHERIE put tosleep. She had grown stone deaf, blind ,and lived in terror and confusion, andwe know she has gone to dog heaven.
MRS. JOHN GLASS has been busyas a beaver entertaining guests andloving every minute of it, because shelets them enter- tain themselves. MRS.LOUISE HARRIS and her threechildren and MISS FAYE OOTEN all ofDayton, Tenn. have been having a visitto remember. There have been no bugs,and the children have lived in the Gulf,staying until long after dark. Then theyhave been followed by MR. AND MRS.WILLIAM CROMWELL from Austin,Texas, and Hawaii. It rained , and theyreally were thrilled, because "It justnever rains in Texas", they said. Andnow Mrs. Glass' grandson FRANKLINELMORE GLASS, his wife and theirson JOHN PURNELL are here for a visitfrom Dayton. They will take CRISTINEGLASS, Mrs. G's grand-claughter backhome with them , and all the island willmourn her going. Cristine has been intoeverything on the islands, and a lot ofthe young people will miss her. She hasrun Miss Willie's Jeep all over, taking agroup to go water skiing, not tomention the clean-up tours around theislands. Mrs. Glass was busy cleaningfive pounds of shrimp preparatory to ashrimp feast for the visitors when wetalked to her , in a flurry ofanticipation.
MRS. GLEN RHODES of State Road867, Sanibel, is welcoming her sonRAYMOND RHODES and his sweetwife home. Raymonf just completedcollege, receiving his AB degree,majoring in Educa- tion, at theUniversity of South Florida in Tampa.He made the Dean's list while at theUniversity and did counseling also, andis having a vacation before consideringpositions beeing offered him.
ROBIN AND GENE KARR OFJacksonville and former residents ofSanibel are proud parents of a son,HUNTER MATTHEW KARR, bomAug. 16th, weighing 7 lbs. 12 oz. Gene isweuV known on the island, havingworked at the B-Hive for severalyears. He was graduated last year fromJacksonville University and is employedby Prudential Insurance Company.Robin is the daughter of Ruth andPhilip Hunter of Pirate Playhouse. TheHunters have not yet seen their littlegrandson, as they are vacationing inCanada.
We had the pleasure of a dengntfulguided tour of one of the new islandcondominiums, the Sandy BendApartments. They are completed andare now being furnished and awaitingthree occupants who are moving inshortly. TIM AND PRIS NORPELL anddaughter KATHY will occupy one ofthe spacious two bedroom, two bathunits. Then JACK AND BETTYO'NEILL and son ROBERT will occupyanother, and DICK AND BARBARAVOCKEL will be moving in also. TheUnit has three stories, and the top onecommands a magnificent view of theGulf. Lovely spacious screen porchesface the water. RUTH AND WOODYANDERSON are the new managers.You will remember Ruth as the formerRuth Jones. There will be some rentalunits too.

At the next meeting of the SanibelCommunity Association, to be heldSept. 5, members will be treated to aspecial report on "Russia Today" byone of their own members, Dr. GerrySchnelle.
Dr. Schnelle visited Russia as amember of a select group of 31specialists, representing the easternstates agricultural leaders and was ableto see many Russian customs, notnormally experienced by an averagevisitor.
Dr. Schnelle will speak on travel,transportation, education, livingconditions, recreation, etc., as well asfanning. He will illustrate his pointswith 100 beautiful slides which he tookhimself.

On July 24th the Lee County Zoning Board recommended to the County Commissioners a change in zoning from GU(General Use) to RU-3, which permits apartment and motel construction, for a tract of land located north of Gulf Driveopposite the Shalimar Motel. The new owner of that motel owns the subject property, as well as all the land eastward fromthat parcel to Tarpon Bay Road. The sketch below shows the land and its location,
except 120 feet.

The zoning change request applies to the portionshaded V777?i .The parcels shaded f==3have recently
"been purchased by the same owner.
At the Zoning Board meeting your Planning Board representatives asked the owner to defer his request, so that hecould meet with the Directors of the Planning Board, to explore the possibility of developing an agreement leading tomutually acceptable plans. The owner denied our request, and pressed the Zoning Board for a recommendation forapproval, which it then granted over our protest.
The owner plans to build 147 motel units on the westerly parcel north of Gulf Drive. This is a density of 21.9 units peracre, and would result in a fully occupied maximum population of over 500 people.
The County Commission will consider this recommendation on September 5.
We oppose this rezoning on the following grounds:
1. Apartment and motel zoning in this area will dangerously extend the area of high density which has for years beenconfined to the south side of Gulf Drive.
2. Each downgrading of zoning tends to set a pattern, and to make it easier to obtain further approvals.

3. IF THE BALANCE OF THE LAND BETWEEN THE SUBJECT PROPERTY AND TARPON BAY ROAD WERE TO BEREZONED IN THE SAME CLASSIFICATION, THE RESULTING POPULATION, OF THAT PARCEL ONLY, COULDBE TWICE THE PRESENT PERMANENT POPULATION OF SANIBEL AND CAPTIVA. THE PROPERTY OWNER HASSAID THAT HE HAS NOT FORMULATED HIS PLANS FOR THE EASTERLY PARCELS. HE DID DESCRIBE ABUSINESS VENTURE THAT HE SOLD BEFORE COMING TO THIS AREA. IT INCLUDED A RECREATIONAL ORAMUSEMENT CENTER, WITH RENTAL ROWBOATS, MINIATURE GOLF, AND FEATURES OF THAT SORT. HESTATED THAT AN ENTERPRISE OF THIS KIND WOULD BE GOOD FOR SANIBEL. WHEN WE SUGGESTED THATTHE USE OF HIS PROPERTY SHOULD BE DISCUSSED AS A WHOLE, HE DECLINED TO CONTINUE THECONVERSATION, BEYOND MENTIONING THAT PERHAPS THE PERIMETER OF THE PROPERTY SHOULD BEZONED FOR BUSINESS AND COMMERCIAL ACTIVITIES. WE ASSUMED THAT HE WOULD RETAIN THEINTERIOR FOR THE AMUSEMENT CENTER.
4. The easterly parcel, consisting of 66 acres, abuts the Bailey Sanctuary along the south line of the Sanctuary. We areconvinced that a commercial development of this size and probable uses would be detrimental to the wildlife in thisSanctuary.
The land covered by this zoning request does not abut theSanctuary but is only 120 feet away from it at its northerly end.We consider this in itself to be dangerously close, and coupled with the much larger risk of the easterly 66 acres in the sameownership, plus the probability of further zoning requests in the same pattern, we feel that every effort should be made toconvince the County Commissioners that this is bad zoning.
5. We are all aware of the difficulties facing the Island Water Association in its efforts to provide sufficient water for thecommunity. The extension of high density zoning can only aggravate these problems.
6. Highway congestion is already severe in the tourist season, and again high density will compound that congestion.
7. There is already on Sanibel more than enough RU-3 zoned land; more than 750 acres of land so zoned are not now beingused, as compared to about 210 acres of RU-3 zoned land which are now in use.
We ask you to attend the hearing before the Commissioners on September 5, or at least to write or wire them youropinion of this request. The item is late in the days agenda, and will probably not be heard before three P.M. The requestnumber is 72-7-32.

St. Isabel Catholic Mission onSanibel Island was scene of the weddingof Miss Anna Barbara Cimato andSamuel James Stovall at 12 noonSaturday. The Rev. Gerrard Beauregardconducted the double- ring ceremony.Music was presented by Mrs. HaroldClark, organist, and Miss Mary Springer,vocalist. The sanctuary was decoratedwith vases of white gladioli and mums.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs.Anne R. Cimato of 1547 PeriwinkleWay on Sanibel and the late Ralph V.Cimato. Mr. Stovall's parents are Mr.and Mrs. James B. Stovall of Waycross,Ga.
The bride was given in marriage byher brother, Joseph Vincet Cimato. Shewore an organza empire gown withlantern sleeves. The dress featuresVenise lace overlay on the bodice,sleeves and down the front of the skirt.Her lace edged illusion veil was held inplace by a lace and organza bowheadpiece. She carried a colonialbouquet of white carnations, roses andbabies breath.
The bride's attendants wore empirestyle gowns of sheer polyester trimmedwith white lace interwoven with limegreen, apricot and yellow ribbon. Maidof honor, Miss Jean Mieloch, of FortLauderdale, cousin of the bride, woreapricot, Miss Barbara Ann Rumplik,bridesmaid, was in lime green and MissAndrea Susan Sain of Springfield, Ohio,bridesmaid, was in yellow. They worelace crowns and carried carnationnosegays the same color as their dresses.
John Stovall was his brother's bestman. Ushers were Alex Weaver ofWaycross, Ga., Denny Thompson ofThomasville, Ga. and John Cimato,brother of the bride. Ralph Cimato,brother of the bride, was ring bearer.
The bride's chosen colors were usedin the table decorations at the receptiongiven by the bride's mother at theSanibel Community House. Gladiolicentered the bride's table.
Mrs. Don Humphries kept thebride's book. Assisting with thehospitalities were Miss JeanneHopwood, Mrs. Don Bissell, MissPatricia Bissell, Miss Minona Stovall,sister of the bridegroom, Mrs. CharlesRumplik, Mrs. Frank Culpepper andMiss Susan Holtz.

In a report to the United Nations,Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim hadthis to say, according to the Fort MyersNews-Press, August 21:
"A major threat to the development,maintenance, protection and survival oftourist attractions is tourism itself.
"Overcrowding, high-densitydevelopment, and the mushrooming ofhotels and other tourist-relatedstructures resulting from unplanneddevelopment at many famous resortsnot only damage the landscape butisolate tourists from any direct contactwith the natural environment.
"Consequently, the interest in visitingsuch places, and their economies,decline markedly.
