Mr. &Mrs.CHARLESMER-GENS, of St. Paul, Minn, areguests of MARGARET WAL-TERS at Pelican Cottage on Sani-bel for two weeks. On their wayhere, they stopped at Bethesda,Md., to visit Mrs. Mergen'ssister, ALICE KUHL, in spiteof the zero weather that Bethesdawas enjoying (?) at the time.Better love hath no sister, wewould say.

The Mergans became veryinterested in shelling since theyhave been guests on Sanibel twoyears ago. They've also beenfortunate shellers, in that theynow have a lovely collection —and hope to add to it this trip.

Mergens is retired from theFirst National Bank of St. Paul, and is now interested in RealEstate. They plan to spend eachseason on Sanibel. They flew intoFort Myers this year and tookthe mailboat to the Island andwere absolutely entranced by thelovely trip and the gracioustreatment they received fromCap't LADD. We're glad to knowthat the "Powers that Be"havegiven the Cap't the contract foranother two years — and hopethey'll extend it many, manymore, as the mail boat — thelast of it 's kind in the U.S.A. —is certainly a pleasure for ourvisitors.

The fogwas so thick that they had tokeep their headlights on all fourdays. (1789 miles.)

HOWELLS VISIT ON SANIBEL

Dr. & Mrs. B.F. HOWELLare guests of Mr. & Mrs. BILLNEWMAN at "Hanover House"on Sanibel where they expect toremain until the later part ofMarch. Dr. Howell is a r e -tired Professor of Paleontologyat Princeton, New Jersey.

Dr. & Mrs. Howell have beenguests of DOC and JOE PIC'C-ENS for the past five seasons. The reason for the change overis simple—Mrs. Howell is Mrs.Newman's sister, and the How-ell's sang the praises of Sanibelto the Newmans for so long thatthey (the Newmans) decided tocome and look the place over.A couple of years ago theyfinally came and immediatelysuccumbed to the Island's charm.(Dr. Howell says, "After Billcaught a big snook, that wasit!)

Anyhow, last year, Bill andand Ms wife bought "HanoverHouse" —which has a separateapartment for their grand-children, and the Ho wells. Seemsto us that perhaps the Howellshad an ulterior motive in SELL-ING the Island so thoroughly totheir relatives...hmmm?

We're sure that Shell Clubmembers, and many others, willremember that Dr. Howell is thegentleman who so kindly identi-fied PRISCILLA MURPHY's col-lection of fossils from La Belle.

Dr. Howell is one of theforemost authorities on veryancient fossils and has writtena couple of hundred papers andbooks on the subject. For i -dentifying fossils of this area,he suggests that we refer toSymposium #3, by Olsen andHarberson, as it treats mostlyon fossils of theCaloosahatcheeregion.

While we were talking to Dr.Howell, he said that we werevery fortunate to have Mrs.KATHERINE V.K. PALMER, theDirector of the PalentologicalResearch Institution of Ithica,New York, as the judge ofentries in the Sanibel Shell Fairthis year.

OLD HELP BACK

MARY ALECK tells us thatELNA ANDERSON, who has beenassociated with her for the pastseven years, isbackattheSani-bel Beauty Salon — consequentlymaking the service back tonormal. Miss Anderson hasherown "Kosy Beauty Salon" atSias Consett, Nantucket Island,Mass., but she enjoys comingto our Islands each season. Be-fore arriving, she always mana-ges to spend a month in NewYork attending all the beautyshows to keep up with the lateststyles. She also finds time totake in some of the newestBroadway shows — lucky girl!

SURE, WE'RE BRAGGING

It does our hearts good tobe able to brag about our Is-land children who have gone outinto the world to hew their way.Hewing rather well these daysis TONY FRENNETE, who, wehear, has been chosen as hisschool's "Shift Leader," whichmeans he will be a "Yellow-Rope" which is the highesthonor given to students at theAdministration School in Ama-rillo, Texas.

Tony, whose service trainingwill conclude in seven weeks, will be in charge of three bar-racks and 400 troops. Eversince he entered the service,Tony has been an "above av-erage" student (which is puttingit mildly) and has given us allreason to admire him — and towish him " above average" suc-cess in the future.

UMMM, DELICIOUS!

A RETURN GUEST AT VILLA CAPRI

Villa Capri has a return guest who spent most of his time for ayear and a half at the Motel being well fed. Detted and pampered, Heleft for parts unknown sometime last year —MARSHALL TABACCHIthinks he got girl crazy. (Well, if you gotta, you gotta.)

Now he's back — right when winter rates are in effect — withoutpaying any attention to the enormous unpaid bill he scooted out oflast time.

You're wondering about all this? Well, we're speaking of the Tabacchi'spet racoon, "MR. STINKY" who showed up last weekend as if he'dnever deserted in the first place.

Marshall has been taking him around via car to renew old acquaint-ances. One of his very best friends was very glad to see Mr. Stinky, but oddly enuf, FRANCIS BAILEY wouldn't let him in the store.

BEACHCOMBER NOTES

Beachcomber guests Mr. &Mrs. DAVID E. CLARK re -cently found a very fine junoniaon the beach right in front ofthe motel. On the same day,R.G. OSBORNE, of Knoxville,Tenn., also found a junoniaclose by. This makes four of

.the shells found on the Beach-comber beach this season —and the season's just begun!

Mr. & Mrs. RALPH GROVESof Gastonia, N.C., have beenat the Motel for the past twoweeks. They say they've hada grand time, not only shellingon the beach, but also on adredging trip they took withRALPH WOODRING. They alsogot in many hours of goodfishing. The vacation is nearlyover now, much to their r e -gret, but they promise thatthey'll hurry back.

Mrs. EDWIN DUNCAN, Jr . ,of Sparta, N.C., a friend ofMrs.VIRGINIA ABSHER.alsoofN.C.,is also staying at the Beach-comber for a couple of weeks. She also went dredging withRALPH and reported an ex-cellent trip.

Mr. & Mrs. SAMUEL RHEA,of Madeira Beach, Florida, spenttheir honeymoon at the Motellast week, and made reservationsfor two weeks at Easter whenthey'll return with the five child-ren of previous marriages.

RANDOM THOTS BY YE ED

While driving down the Sani-bel-Captiva Road the other dayI noticed the improvement of

,the looks of the bushes along theside of the highway. It seems astho the Count)* brought overa few "workers" from the prisonfarm and had them trim of f allthe scraggly shrubs, trees andweeds that overhang the right-ofway. It was a good idea andSHOULD have improved the lookalong the way.

BUT, for some reason known

only to the County, they leftthe "garbage" along the sideof the road and by now, it lookslike the very devil!

If the County is so free withtheir low paid help, they couldat least send one or two of.them back with a truck to cleanup the mess — altho it is veryseldom that politicians everclean up the mess they make.

Oh well, they are probablywaiting for the tourists to leavebefore they put the convicts backon the road — of course thetourists will leave with a badtaste in their mouth, and a badimpression of our beautifulIslands.

HATS & JAZZ

Sanibel's visiting QuantumTheory scientists threw a realshindig at Sasa Ybel last Sat-urday night. When we corneredDr. B.T. ALLEN of the Univ-ersity of Oregon and asked whatthe plans were, he answeredthat he understood "that every-one would be required to appearin a funny hat."

Dr. Allen was right, muchmerriment and fun developedfrom that simple fact. Prizeswere awarded with DOTTIEBOOKER taking home a bottleof fine sherry as her Firstprize. Honorable Mentions wentto Dr. KELLER, Mrs. SUESTIDHAM and Mrs. JOANNESMITH. The judges were Mrs.P. O. LOWDEN, DR. GILDAHARRIS and DR.LUDWIGHOF-ACHER.

At one point in the evening,we discovered BIRGIT in a hud-dle with Mrs. SOGA SKAFTELINDBLOM, who is the SwedishVice Counsul in Jacksonville, and Professor and Mrs. EGILHYLLERAS, in whose honor thesymposium is being held. Theywere all discussing something ata mad pace in what we think waseither Quantum or Swedish, wecouldn't make out which.

It was a good party and allwho attended thoroughly enjoyedthemselves.

CAPISTRANO, HECK!

Tree swallows have been en-circling the Sanibel NationalWildlife refuge in great num-bers — estimated between 500and 750 thousand — since theearly part of December. (Otherestimates, some far higher andsome lower, have also beengiven.)

These migratory birds fly soclosely together that they re -semble swarming bees, and onehas the impulse to cover one'shead and hide when they flyover the roads. We've seen anumber of swarms on RabbitRoad and near the new schoolwhere they were so thick asthey swept across the highwaythat we had to slow down forfear of injuring them. Earlylast week, we saw a swarmflying westerly from the lighthouse past Villa Victoria — andthe flock took at least 10 minutesto pass. It was then that wedecided to find out what kindof bird this was--and with thekind assistance of TOM WOOD,we found out.

The tree swallows drink waterwhile flying and the Sanibel SeaPlane canal was so congestedwith watering birds that at times,Tom has had to wait his turnto take off or land. He said hesaw a white bird in the middleof a flock which hebelieveswasan albino tree swallow. He saidthat the other birds resented thewhite one and made frequentdiving attacks on it — not, ap-parently, with the intent to in-jure it, but rather to drive himaway.

These birds come to visit usevery year — but no one seemsto remember them in such greatnumbers. Records of peak num-bers will be compared to thoseof other years.

We were included in a smalldinner party at Tween - WatersInn on Captiva last Saturdayevening, which, as our hostpointed out, is one of the twoevening during which you'll findtheir justly famous roast beefon the menu. (The other dayis Tuesday.)

We were shown to our tableby hostess MILDRED BUNTINE,and since it was our first visitof the season, we were quiteimpressed with the redecorateddining room. The decor is mostlyoff - white and the lighting castsa beautiful moon - glow which ismost restful.

Needless to say we had roastbeef. Others of the party selectedthe salmis of lamb en casser-.ole, which they reported wasalso delicious. The salads anddesserts were presented on atray so that one could make aslelction — and see what one wasgetting. We didn't take three ofeach, even tho we wanted too.But each of us selected a differ-ent one and entered into a vig-orous, if quiet, discussion asto which was better. The con-sensus was that executive chefDICK BUNTING is an artist.

The service was splendid, and all in all, it was a verydelightful dinner. We had anextra that we can't say that youwill have, but it 's certainly worthmentioning. At a table close tous was a party of folk who hadbeen Tween-Water guests formany seasons. They startedsinging several of the good oldsongs of yesteryear in perfectharmony and we wanted to ap-plaud but were afraid to breakthe lovely spell they wove.

As we said, we can't guaran-tee that this fine singing groupwiil add as much pleasure toyour evening as it did to ours, but we will say that you'll haveone of the nicest dinners in thenicest surroundings ever. 'Twasan evening to remember, withor without song.

PERSONAL

Mr. & Mrs. MURRAY T.HOYT are staying at High Tidesuntil February 24. We droppedby to interview Mr. Hoyt andspent a delightful two hourstrying to get him to talk abouthimself. It was rather difficult,as he wanted to talk about every-thing else.

He has spent most of hislife writing fiction for maga-zines— Saturday Evening Post,Ladies' Home Journal, GoodHousekeeping, Women's Day —and most of the other top slicknames. He is the author of"Does It Always Rain Here,Mr. HOYT?" published in 1950by Rinehart. Later, he startedwriting articles — also for thePost and other well known pub-lications. He is also an editorof a Vermont magazine, The"Vermont Life," which is athing of beauty.

While on Sanibel, Mr. Hoytgets up around 7 A.M., spendsa half hour on the beach andthen works 'til 1 P.M. Afterlunch they swim, fish and walkthe beach. Mrs. Hoyt says he'svery nice to live with, which wecan well believe.

Inadvertently, we found out. that the Hoyts have an adultvacation camp on Lake Cam-plaine at Owl's Head Harbor.Anyone looking for a delightfulspot for a summer vacation canget in touch with them at Owl'sHead Harbor, Vergennes, Vt.

INSIDE SANIBEL

One doesn't have to wake tooearly these winter days, in or-der to greet the rosy-fingereddawn. It was about 6:30 thismorning when I heard the scold-ing of a pair of cardinals out-side the glass door at the footof my bed, demanding theirbreakfast of grains and sun-flower seeds. (I find that thepalmetto rats have little chanceat the bird feeder if I v/ait'til first daylight to put out themorning feast.) After the car-dinals come the fierce brownthrasher, the towhees, the softlittle ground doves — and thenthe mad whistling swirl of theredwing blackbirds. Often fourand twenty of them, and the otherfeathered guests beat a hastyretreat 'til the crowd thins. Bythat time the sun is up and theblack silhouette of palm andseagrape have taken on dimen-sion and color under a blue sky.

Observing this particularmanifestation of Sanibel wild-

_life, makes me think it is hightime for a full report on theJay N. (Ding) Darling Wild-life Sanctuary, which was of-ficially dedicated on November13, 1962, by the Trustees ofthe Internal Improvement Fundin Tallahassee, The Sanctuaryis made up of some 1,700 acres, lying on Sanibel to the West ofTarpon Bay, continuing behindthe new school, on up towardsWulfert Point...and though thesehundreds of acres may look un-changed, as you fish around Duf-fy's Creek, or Maclntyre, or inHardworking Bayou, or even asyou glance to your right as youdrive up the Captiva road beyondthe school, you should surelybe able to imagine a shade ofdifference. For these lands, dedicated IN PERPETUITY, willnever change from their beauti-ful natural state. No draglineddevelopments here...no centralbusiness district. Under theterms of the formal dedication, the area will be "under themanagement of Florida Boardof Parks and Historic Mem-orials, in cooperation with theFlorida Board of Conservationand the Florida Game and FreshWater Fish Commission, and....(the I.I. Board)..granted the rightof the Florida Board of Parksand Historic Memorials to enterinto agreement with FederalAgencies subsequent to the ex-piration of leases " (which

leases are presently held bythe U.S. Fish and Wildlife Com-mission, under the supervisionof TOMMY WOOD.) It is theearnest hope of the Jay N.(Ding) Darling Memorial Com-mittee that the U.S. Fish andWildlife Commission will begranted a long term lease on theSanctuary by the State of Floridaso that they can carry out theiralready well defined plans ofdevelopment. These are being

presented momentarily by theregional office, in Atlanta, at ameeting with the State agenciesin Tallahassee, and will includeplans and estimated costs for asurvey; for various boardwalks;for dikes and deep wells tocreate brackish water feedinggrounds; and for a nature centerbuilding.

At a meeting of the MemorialCommittee on Tuesday, January8, it was decided to establisha fund to honor the memory ofthe late ALICE O'BRIEN of Cap-tiva, who was a close friend ofMr. Darling from the early daysof his residence on that Island;who gave generously to the JayN. (Ding) Darling Foundation inDes Moines, Iowa; who aided andabetted the Memorial Com-mittee in its work last spring;and who did not live to know ofthe final dedication of the lands. Thus it seems appropriate tothe Committee that Miss O'-Brien's memory should be hon-ored by the erection of an ob-servation tower, and the makingof trails, within the Sanctuary,in the part of the world shedearly loved. Funds will go thruthe Foundation in Des Moines, for tax exemption, but will beused and administered here. All work for the Sanctuary, andthis memorial, is volunteered,so there is no overhead to ab-sorb donations. Mr. HAROLDBIXBY will head this project, and friends of Miss O'Brienmy send contributions to him, address; Captiva Island,. FloridaChecks should be made out to"The Jay N. (Ding) DarlingFoundation."

TO THE ISLANDER:

In your December 20 issue, you published a letter from aman who, altho he says he likesfair play and speech, thinks thatwhen they don't seems to be onhis side, calamity will take overthe future of Sanibel.

Altho helping pay the billswith taxes, when it comes tomaking laws and rules for othersto abide by, a few folks, mostof them who arrived on Sanibelnot posse sed of an abundance ofworldly goods, but were for-tunate to better their conditionseem to forget this, and thinkno one but them should super-vise the way Sanibel should de-velop.

When we first came to theIslands in 1932, with its sandroads, get to the Post Officeby boat or walking, we couldwalk the Gulf Beach and some-times picnic there. This is quitedifferent from now when thereare only a few places where youcan even get to the shore, and it

looks as if in a short time, except where the County haslooked far enough ahead to pur-chase a beach front that a non-resident can enjoy, a strangerwill not be welcome as moreand "more PRIVATE BEACHsigns appear.

There are folks here whodon't like to be told what theycan do on their property, andfor what purpose it can be used

Some also don't like thelime light at Town Meetings,so sit quietly--and even if theytalk to their neighbor, they arecriticized for doing it.

Has the Planning and ZoningAuthority done anything abouta road to the new causeway? There doesn't seem to be anymove in this direction that canbe observed.

As the Sanibel - Captiva roadis, I believe, now mainly resi-dential, and as I believe a denialhas been made to a business ex-pansion, shouldn't they considera place where new businessescould be started, or maybe theyfavor Fort Myers as it will beaccessable 24 hours a day then.

Is there any thought to thePine Island Bridge, or its endon Sanibel, as it looks as ifthe same people who put overthe new causeway are looking formore easy money in a com-mission on another bond issue.

Is the Incorporation bug stillbuzzing? So more Arm Chairjobs will be created?

With the Donna remains stilla fire hazard, and the canals, mosquito ditches and the Con-servation Area to collect afloatsam backwash, and with justas many other favorable placesto choose for homesites and va-cation areas, at much less in-flated values, maybe there isSOME thinking to be done at thepresent time.

Progress doesn't advancevery fast in restricted areas, only where unlimited capitalexists - and who on Sanibel hasthat.

A ride along the roads, onwhich improvement was stoppedfor seasonal reasons, and withthe frost damage to vegetationnow showing, there should beplenty to keep the improvementfolks busy — how about it?

During the recent holiday season, a little red wagon often camedown the road, confusing the Island children. They all thought thatit was Santa and his sleigh, but wondered where all the reindeer were. They also wondered if Santa had lost some weight. Actually all it waswas CHARLES LEBUFF, Jr . , and his "Le Buff Mobile." Here he -^points out one of the features of the "vehicle" to VINCE MAC VETTI, iFORMER Island resident who was visiting at the time. After a short Iride around Relsir.ger's. Vince, who is working on guided missiles, ;told us that, "I thought an Atlas blast-off was wild! Wow!" . t

a bit since she was a child. It was VIVIAN KEARNS, who, with her husband DICK^ greetsthe happy guests at the IslandInn.

She was born in Agusta,Georgia, and later attended theUniversity of Georgia. Decidingar some point to £ee the world,(including Flofida) she visitedELaytaria Beach and attended afraternity dance there. One ofthe guests present was Dick, who had been talked into attend-ing by an old buddy of his. Itwas probably the best bit of"talking," for Vivian becamehis bride in 1950.

She still had never seen theIsland wheich were to be herhome, as the Senior Kearns werein Miami at the time. She firsttouched Island shores in Feb-rary of 1952 when she and Dicktook over management of CasaYbel. From there they went toSouth Seas, and are now happilyensconced (for both themselvesand their guests) at their thirdseason at the Island Inn. Theyhave a daughter, LAURIE (sheof the train for "Daddy.")

Did you guess? Well, allwe'd like to say is that shesets a beautiful table, is a lovelyperson, and we (as well asmost other Islanders) are verypleased that her home is onour Islands.

vacation (besides exausted ifsatisfied emotions) are threealbums which remind the ma-jority of the kids of very goodtimes. They are "Mashed Po-tatoes," "Joey Dee at Pepper-mint Lounge," and "Peter, Pauland Mary." All three diskswere played at all the holidayparties. "Peter, Paul and Mary"is the favorite 'cause of all thegood songs on it, including"Lemon Tree," "If I Had AHammer," "500 Miles," andso forth.

Also left over from Christ-mas are an assortment of newwords and phrases, which wepresent to you v/ith proper trans-lation, to wit: Gimped up — mix-ed up; Snowed over ya — he(she) likes you; Hacking around -fooling around; Panic (as in"It 's a —) — fun; You're swift —sarcastic expression meaningyou're thinking.

a new fad — wearing ties toschool. And the Island girlshave one of their own — wearingfunny hats while hacking aroundduring weekends. This gem waspicked up from the northernboys during vacation. We're notthe only ones to go along withthis — last Saturday evening afew* of the teen - agers were In-vited to the hat party at CasaYbel. The party was given bythe Quantum Theory scientists, and EVERYBODY wore nuttyhats, danced and had a good time.
