Mother and daughter aresuch look-alikes, most think them sisters."We read about Sanibel in a brochure. We were afraid even to ask anyone aboutfhe piace, because people have suchdifferent ideas, but this is it, as far as weare concerned. It is so beautiful andpeaceful," said Mrs. Gilbert.

All of the island churches had lovelyservices for Easier, <ind the island treesand flowers put forth their prelliestblooms despite ihe long drought we havehad. The ladies in their bright costumeswere as gay looking as ihe flowers.

One visitor remarked on the fact thatalmost no one wore hats and gioves asthey do elsewhere. It is so informal hereand the warm weather makes too muchclothing uncomfortable that we feel sure'he good Lord will understand.

•I t +

All of the shops had their Easterfinery on sale and we could not helpthinking that "Fresh As A Daisy"describes all of the clothes at Marylou's.Young, beautiful and nostalgic describesthe clothes at Thetan and the RedPelican. Dotti's caters to 1he ladybeautiful who's busy as a bee. And OpenGate clothes are made for a "maid in abeautiful dream." Christa has clothes ofdistinction. Seven Seas has the Hawaiiantouch, fhe Sea Horse has the island'sstyle ail its own and Bailey's has a bit ofglamor for each and all.

The Red Pelican will be moving totheir new quarters this summer for thenew spacious building will be ready later

on. We enn't help but wonder if i l will stillhave all the old charm and almosphere ofthe lillle old shop with all the curiousantiques and imports. Will ihey crealethe same atmosphere again; one ofalmost longing for the faraway placeswhere they come form? Well, of course.

I I IAnother business that will be

enlarging into a new spot but siillretaining ihe old flavor will be the LastStraw. They have a beautiful newbuilding down at the Lighthouse end ofthe island where they will house theirfurniture which they have not been ableto display at all. They will have all sortsof suitable island furniture to provide awide variety of attractive choices.

+ + +If you have not had the good fortune

to see the Bamboo Room or whatever itwill officially be named, then drop by andvisit it at the B-Hive. The prettiest teasets, straight from the Orient, areavailable in many different patterns, andSake cups with the carafe come in exoticoriental potteries. It goes without sayingthey have all the things to put in thesedecorative ceramics too, and theselection is the best on the island.

TOTHE ISLANDER:[tear Friends:

As time moves on and more peoplemove io Sanibei, the problems herebecome more acute. Because we arevirtually disenfranchised and ournearest government representatives arestruggling with problems of greatermagnitude than Sanibel's. our efforts toget solutions through them must seemlike the pestering of gnafs. As you knowthe human reaction to gnafs is to swatthem. This must surely be the same kindof reaction that County officiate havetoward Sanibei ions.

it is obvious at any meeting heidthese days on Sanibei that frustrationsare building. The difficulty js that wehave no reai place to go for solutions toour problems.

Now, surely, if we had home rute, wecouid elect our officials -from a widerange of very able, dedicated people whowould represent at! of us. Before they areelected we could make sure that they arededicated to work for just solutions foreveryone; workers, builders, developers, businessmen, retirees, our children, ourvisitors, our environment and ourwildlife.

We know the county is beseiged withthe many problems that extraordinarygrowth brings. Jf we set up local selfgovernment on Sanibei we will relievethe frustrations caused by unsolvedproblems here, white we lighten theburden carried by Lee County.

With self-government, we wili have a

iool wifh which we can all work togetherfor ihe common good. The mistrusts andmisunderstandings that heighten ourfrustrations today will disappear assolutions to our problems are discoveredand used. And as we work together asense unity of purpose will develop thatwill smooth and harmonize the path wehave to tread.

If we discover something happeningthat is not in the best interests of Sanibei, then, because we have a close workingrelationship with each other we will spotit more readily and have the tools withwhich to solve the problem before it cancause undue damage.

With self-government we will have avehicle through which we can worktogether in good will so that our humanrelationships may be on the same level asis the beauty of this enchanted island.

FUND RAISING FORPRESCHOOL IS FUN

Santbei Capfiva pre-school sup-porters, under the able leadership ofJudy Workman and Barry Fisher, literally had a bai! on Wednesdayevening at the Island Beach Club. The five piececombo was made up of Dwrghf Witson,Hans Wifson, Bryan Webb, Jeff Htgerdand Bud Ray.

Beautiful plants decorated the whitecovered tables and were later sold tothose wishing to take them home forEaster. A decorative chalkboard moralof children at play was done by TomMorgan, and candles and wall sconcesprovided the right illumination for thegala dinner party. Island businessesdonated almost the entire dinner con-

Jean Alberts and Joan Leonasformed the food committee and JuneMuench was chairman of decorations.AH the enthusiastic ladies made thewhole affair a huge success. And withoutthe men, God bless 'em, it would not havebeen the success if was.

Many volunteers have already comeforward to help in the story hour for thepre-schoolers, and a program is beingprepared to train other volunteers asmore are needed.

Judy and Barry extend thanks to ailthe hard working committee people andto the merchants who donated the foodand goodies.

Birds without feathers streak together I photo by huston

Have you ever watched a vuiture soaring overhead and wondered where she laysher eggs and raises heryoung?

Do you know where to look for the well hidden nests of the only two warblers thatbreed on our island — the yeilowthroat and the prairie warbler? Or what their neststook like, or how many eggs they lay and what the eggs look like?

Do you know which birds lay round eggs and which lay cylindrical eggs? And• which lay white eggs and which lay colored or marked eggs? And how birds often canbe identified by nests and eggs, and of the wonderful variety of the markings on eggsand of the construction of nests?

Well, aii these questions and many more wiU be answered for you next winter —in time for you to go out looking in the spring to check for yourseif.

The answers and a wealth of data on the nesting habits of birds will be in a booknow being written by Sanibel's own Hal H. Harrison. It will contain more than 200color photographs of nests and eggs, all taken by Hal through more than 12 years of-'painstaking work.

The book is to be published by Houghton-Mifflin Co. as one of the v.-etf knownseries of guide books initiated by Roger Tory Peterson. It wiii be the Peterson fisidguide to nests and eggs of birds in eastern United States.

Hal, a life-long naturalist, photographer, lecturer and writer has travelledthroughout this area getting and storing up his photographs, taking them en tree tops,in swamps and mangrove islands, in holes in trees and in holes in the ground.

Hal, as you know, keeps you informed with his column in this newspaper aboutbooks in ihe Sanibei Library. He has previously written "The World of the Snake" andother articles and books and will now have another important addition to the Libraryto his credit.

+ + -rA field note: two extremely rare birds for this area were sighted in -the Darling

Sanctuary. They were whimbrels, formerly called Hudsonian curlews. They are majestic shorebirds, larger than our abiindanf willet whom otherwise

they resemble except for browner spotf ings and a much longer down-curved bitl. They stood beautifully for inspection by the side of the road before Hying off.

Undoubtedly they had come up from the south on their long-range migratory trip tobreeding grounds in the Arctic.

THAT'S POLITICS, BY GEORGE!by County Commissioner

Chairman George Goldfrap

As a genera! rule, this column isdevoted to an analysts of current Com-mission action. In view, however, of ournot meeting during the week of April 7, Iha ve decided to use the space to appraiseyou of severa! projects around thecounty.

One report has recently crossed mydesk that 1 find especially encouraglng. The Lee County Division of Welfare andSocial Services recently received thefirst repayment of an assistance grant toa local citizen. This was made possibleunder the provisions in the new welfareordinance dealing with Hens againstrecipients' property. The ordinance hasbeen in effect for two months and is acompliment to the work of our WelfareDirector, Jackie Hornsby. Its ef-fectiveness in this first test case Isdemonstration enough that there are stillhonest people who need help but who arewilling to stand on their own two feetwhen they can.

You will also foe interested Inknowing that Shady Rest, the Lee Countynursing facility, has almost completedthe construction of aiJ its newfacilitles.

Lee County now has two new vanhigh-fop ambulances. Tfiese wtii, ofcourse, be added to our already heavilyworked fleet. To give you a sample ofhow these ambulances are used, themonth of February saw our medi-fearnsmake 528 runs to save lives. Thisamounts to almost $16,000 worth ofbusiness.

Speaking of business, here are twomonthly reports ihat might interest you.Beth pertain to February. The Vehicleinspection Station performed 9,820 In-spections and collected S2t,000 plus, shewing a 10.8 percent increase for thisdepartment. The Building Department,cm the other hand, showed a Februaryloss of S&9O9 from the January figures.m doubt the Florida Cities Waterproblems and flood insurancerequirements will continue to effect fhssarea which would normally shew growth.

Matiacha can look forward ro moreand more use of iis recently completedCommunity Center. Her is ihis the wholect Lee County's building efforts. A, newCrime Lab for the Lee County Sheriff'sDepartment ss virtually completed andwas sorely needed. May s*?c"_''d seecompletion of our new PurchasingWarehouse.

If you regularly attend Commissionmeetings you know how bad the acousticsare in our meeting room, in our con-tinuing efforts io solve ffsis probfem, wehave ordered carpets and drapes, ehope Shis, combined with the new mikesystem, will help.

Lee County's recently employedPersonnel Director. John Goddani, hasput several new and valuable services*nio effect for Counfy Personnel. Johnhas the basic structure complete for aCounty Credit Unicn, new medicalphysicals are becoming available is alimited number c- employees, and arewsieiter for employees ;s nowprod^cs-d monthly.

A shopping centerthat's hard to find?

We just don't have the regular earmarksof a shopping center. There's no asphalt. No flashing neon stuff. And you'll haveto look for our entrance sign behind somegiant Australian pines we can't bear tocut down.

We're so low-key many people thinkwe're a group of private homes or abeautiful resort of some type — butwe're not. We're a cluster of smallshops that are as beautifulas they are fun to shop in.

If you're looking for a lazylazy afternoon of browsing, why not drop in for lunchor a little ice cream. You'lllike our shops as much asyou'll enjoy relaxingin the shade by ourFountain.

One of the Sanibel Library's greatest benefactors is Burnett Ball, a formerHarcourt Brace Jovanovich executive who is now retired and lives on Whelk Dr.Every so often, Mr. Ball backs his car up to the library door and unloads a big box ofbrand new books. It is always a red letter day at the library. Well, he has done ifagain, and here are some samplings:

Anne Morrow Lindbergh's new book, "Locked Rooms and Open Doors," a coniinuation of her autobiography which she started in "Bring Me a Unicorn," followedwith "Hour of Cold, Hour of Lead," and which, I presume she will follow with stillmore revelations from her letters and diaries, in this latest volume, Mrs. Lindberghre-creates the years following the death of her child. It covers the period 1933-1935.

Vina Delmar's latest book, "A Time for Titans," a novel of the Louisiana Pur-chase is included in Mr. Ball's gift. The "titans" in this novel are Napolean, Jeffersonand Toussaint. All of the characters in this book really lived and the main events tookplace as portrayed.

"The Case Worker" by George Konrad reports on the author's daily work at astate welfare orqani7flf ion where he is director. His files tell of neglected, abandoned, orphaned, maltreated, delinquent, and retarded children. The scene is Hungary; thetime is now. Budapest or Texas...the problems are the same, presented here in averbaiiy passionate appeal.

The list of Mr. Bail's gift books is long and there is not space to tell you detailsabout them all. But here is a listing from which you may want to choose:

"Take Today, the Executive as Dropout" by Marshall McLuhan and HarringtonNevitt.

"A. Philip Randolph, a Biographical Portrait" by Jervis Anderson."The Ma jcr Ordeals of the Mind" by Henri Michaux.'Pearl's Kitchen" by Pearl Bailey (This should have a great circulation among

Sanibel's fine culinary artists).'"Encounter with Anthropology" by Robin Fox."Revolutionary Suicide" by Huey P. Newton.'"'iWemcirsof a Revolutionary" by Milovan Djilas."The Long Midnight" by Alan White." Elsewhere Perhaps" by Amos Oz."Triple Threat" by Helen Maclnnes.•Yes" by Bibi Wein. The Trees and Fields Went ihe Other Way" by Evelyn Eaton.

"Rcger Casement" by Brian ingiis." I rgmar Bergman Directs" by John Simon.'''Television" by Les Brown.'Beyond" by i.A. Ricrtards.

' •£SP" by Danie! Cohen.•'Place" by James Atoms."Key 'ssues ir. -he Afro-American Experience" by Hogains, Kljson and Fox."Burr" by Gore Vidai."Dutch Uncie" by Marilyn Durham.

An exciting new residential communityis underway along the Gulf beach atSouth Seas Plantation on the tip ofCaptiva Island-It includes several clusters of unique singlefamily Beach Homes, spacious two bedroomVillas, and a number of small shops.

We invite you to call at 472-2523 or stopby our sales office for information and apersonally guided tout.

INFORMATION TO HELP STOP RAPEOFFEREDTO LOCALCiVIC GROUPS

An al\ out statewide "Help StopCrime?" campaign to attack the problem

of rape in Florida was announced todayby Governor Reubin Askew.

The Governor said, "This is justabout the most terrifying crime categoryof all. We must attack the problem withevery professional skiJJ and resource atour command." x

Nearly 300 law enforcement agenciesthroughout Florida will participate in the"Crimes Against Women" program. Itspurpose is to educate women in ways toavoid potential rape situations and whatto do if rape occurs. It encourageswomen to report all rapes.

Project officers from each agencywill conduct seminars for women'sgroups and clubs, showing a new fi lm,"Report Rape," and distributing morethan two million pamphlets on the sub-ject. For information or to arrange aprogram for your group, call PrudyTaylor of the Lee County Sheriff'sDepartment at 332-3456.

The film and pamphlets werepreviewed in Tallahassee, Orlando,Tampa and Miami by Attorney GeneralRobert L. Shevin, chairman of theGovernor's Crime Prevention Com-mittee.

Attorney General Shevin fold localcivic, government and lav/ enforcementleaders in each of these cities that, " InFlorida last year, a forcible rape oc-curred every 4.5 hours on the average. This crime category alone, more than allothers combined, is probably responsiblefor the pleas we hear for safe streets."

Research by the Governor's CrimePrevention Committee shows that areported rape occurs in the United Statesevery seven minutes, or as often as ababy girl is born in this country.Estimates by police officials indicatethat nationally, four out of ffve rapes gounreporfed.

The new materials were developedand produced by the Governor's CrimePrevention Committee in Tallahassee. The program is funded jointly by theState of Florida and the Law En-forcement Assistance Administration.

Drop by for a visit. I'd like to answer thequestions you have about a con-dominium on Sanibel or, perhaps pose afew you should ask.
