IS NOW AIRCOJSDITIONED & Open Daily For

THE EGOISTby ethel snyder

Everyone has a favorite nov-el, for one reason or another."THE EGOIST "written by Geo-rge Meredith, a British novelistof Queen Victoria era has beenmine from the very first timeI read it. And it has remainedmy favorite even though that isa long time ago and a processionof good novels has marched inbetween that first reading andthe last reading of the samenovel!

Robert Louis Stevenson hasstated somewhere in his writ-ings that he had read "The Ego-is t" five times already. And hegave the impression that theremight be another time! My firstcopy was bound in soft redleather with heavy gilt edge onthe pages on top of the book.If I liked a book I bought acopy for my very owni {Andalways liked to get the bestedition.) This red leather wasvery pleasing to handle, softand pliant, clear excellent type, and the more times it got readby me and by several otherswho borrowed it, the nicer itwas to handle! But alas alak!It got stuck in some gooey flypaper in the kitchen of an Ohiofarm when I was up there onesummer! What that fly papercould do was amazing. It spread! It multiplied its location, itoozed! The sheets of the bookstuck together, the gold toppingmelted. It was unbelievable thatfly paper could do all this pro-duct did. There wasn't a bookstore in the village so it meantno "Egoist" until I got backto Columbus.

The new copy was soft darkgreen leather -with gilt edge topto pages. The printing was goodbut the book as a whole did nothave the elite the first one hadhad.

But s e v e r a l book-houndfriends were delighted with TheE g o i s t and I read this onethrough twice. That is , almosttwice! Once and a half was moreaccurate. It had the misfor-tune to fall into a trout streamin northern Michigan! Now anyone will agree that to be im-mersed entirely and completelyin running water is destructivebeyond repair to a paper book!

The third volume is the leastattractive but it has the dis-tinction of coming through inperfect form!

July 1, Dominion Day,marked the beginning of thelong weekend which includesIndependence Day and also theday Joseph and yours -trulyopened the Ka KahWaParkand also the day Joseph nearlygot himself killed. If it had notbeen for a visitor from Florida,he might have lost an arm. As itwas, he did lose his voice overthe week-end. It was like this:

Joseph had a 5' blade rotarymower attached to the tractorwhen he picked up a piece ofwire. He stopped the blade andlifted the mower with the trac-tor hoist and was struggling toremove the wire when the hoistlet go. The mower guard drop-ped across Joseph's upper armand pinned him to the ground onthe off side and out of sight frompassing traffic. Being DominionDay, cars were passing at therate of one per second with acontinuous roar. He lay thereand yelled for an hour and ahalf, unable to free himself.

Bob and Connie Hurd, oldMuskokoans who now live inSt. Petersburg, Fla., came upfor the summer and dropped into see us. I was away and thedoor locked. They nearly leftwhen Bob thought he heard acry of help. He couldn't seeanything but wandered over tothe Park under the pines to seehow the work was progressingand discovered poor Joseph onthe point of collapse. It tookfifteen minutes of prying with a2 x 4 to release Mm, Althoughnot broken, the arm is still'hors de combat' from nerve and

tissue damage. It still looksrather like a storm coming upover the Gulf!

Joseph has fallen in the riverin a log jam, gone through iceon a horse at 25 degrees belowzero and fought many a danger-ous fire but he saidhe was neverso scared in his life as beingtrapped with hundreds of peoplepassing and unable to hear him!

As for the Park, despite theunfinished building and not aman for the hiring, and a lackof picnic t a b l e s that have to beassembled Ever see a onearmed carpenter? the sea-son got off to a flying start. Our first campers came for onenight and stayed 17. Anotherparty is still with us. With 40days or more without a drop ofrain and temperatures well in-to the 90s, every Governmentpark is stuffed to overflowingand all the well known placeshave been turning people away,,Even the Provincial Police aredirecting people to us. Theycan't park along the road with-out toilet facilities and water.

The four-lane highway hasreached beyond the SevernRiver now on Highway 11, aboutto 4 miles south of us. At therate the work is progressing.„ . they were still bard at itwhen I wiggled through the jamlast night about 7:00 p.m. andmaybe they work around theclock. At any rate they will beup to our place in a week or two. When they hit the BeaverCreekHill, any trailerites with sensewill get their trailers off thebottle-neck and do their runningaround unencumbered. TrafficHAS to go through but it willtie up at times.

We are in the ideal spot, justshort of the 45th parallel (halfway between the Equator and theNorth Pole); half way betweenthe dance pavilion of B a 1 a andthe Champlain Park of Orillia. In a radius of 25 miles there are29 lakes, unless I missed a few.Seven or eight rivers, the TrentCanal System (often see boatsfrom as far away as Oregon andB.C., Texas and Nantucket) andjust 4 miles south of Graven-hurst, the Gateway to the Musk-oka Lakes. Santa's Village (withSanta Claus and his dog, Snowbo, there a l l summer) is within a45 minute drive. The Air Port10 or 12 miles. Grey Coach busstops at our corner so one canget out of driving altogether atsuch times as the Canadian Na-tional Exhibition in Toronto, with special return trip ratesand the busses run right into theheart of the C.N.E. We are ex-actly 100 miles north of Toronto, about 70 miles south of Algon-quin Provincial wild-life Park;a day's run from Detroit orNiagara Falls or Thousand Is-land Bridge or Port Huron-Sarnia Blue Water B r idge .Handy, huh?

By the way, Ka Kah Wa isthe Indian word for Rooster (orcockerel) and of course the parkis named for the Cockerills, your old Sanibelites. Our bigwhite rooster (on the sign) hasshoulder pips for the C aptainand a blue collar with a fleur-de-lys on it. Joseph is fromQuebec and Gapt. Cockerillwasof Norman origin if you go back900 years, to General Cocque-rille, William the Conqueror's•Little Banty Cock.'I don't knowwhether he was a small man orjust a young fire-eater, but ther o o s t e r became h i s coatof arms.
