CORRECTION OX CORRECTION

Well, well, well — we're suregetting into a deep subject when wehave to correct corrections of othercorrections. Wow! Anyhow, last weekwe had a correction on an item about theAustins and how mueh they likedSanibel and all.

They still like Sanibel {thankgoodness) bat some of the people we hadthem thanking don't have anything to dowith the businesses we connected themwith — for instance, Rudy Vivian and hislovely wife own the B-Hive (not Ro bertPotts who is with Sanibel Realty) andthe Foxes own the Schoolhouse Gallery, not the Orloffs (who, to add to theconfusion USED to own the B-Hive, butdon't any more. So, now we hope thateveryone is happy. If not, we can have acorrection on a correction on a correctionnext week, though we sincerely hopenot.

QUESTIONS ANSWERED BYREP. PAUL NUCKOLLS

Dear Representative Nuekolls:We are writing to protest the fact

that this area has only one major airlinecarrier, which is again on strike.

My husband is a heart patient, andit was necessary for us to travel to themidwest. Beeause National was striking,we have to leave here at4 a.m. by bus toget to Tampa for a flight to connect uswith another flight to our destination, and poor connections caused even moredelay and anxiety.

Isn't there any help for us, who arestranded here at the mercy of oneairline, which has been out on strikethree times in 5 years?

Mrs.C.R.W.No. Ft. Myers

Dear Mrs. C.R.W.,Our office has encountered many

cases where a relative in the north hasbecome seriously ill, and our peoplecannot get air connections out ofSouthwest Florida, in some cases, forseveral days.

First, let me address my reply tothe problem of acquiring another majorcarrier for the Southwest Florida area.

The phenomenal growth here hasproduced a demand for mobility into andout of Fort Myers, the hub of SouthwestFlorida activity. Because we have norailroad passage, two bus line routes, one interstate airline carrier, and oneintrastate carrier (National), our area ispractically crippled by National's lateststrike. Even when we have National inservice, our people have access only toEastern Seaboard cities and a limitedinterconnecting service with othercarriers through interchanges in Tampa,Orlando, Sarasota and Miami.

Our office has requested Amtrak toconsider adding passenger rail serviceinto our area, but they are experiencingsuch a severe equipment problem thatthey cannot request any increased

service locations at this time. The Fort Myers-Lee County

Chamber of Commerce, through theirAirline Service Committee, chaired byMalcolm Schroeder has done a yeoman'sjob trying to get another major carrierto serve Lee County, and have beenworking on this since 1970. Their effortshave been stymied first by the energycrisis wherein no airlines were givenpermission by the Civil AeronauticsBoard for new routes, and then by theNational Airlines strike, becausegovernmental agencies may not becomeinvolved in new route negotiations whenone of the major carriers is involved in alabor dispute. Their objectives are to getanother major jet service from Ft.Myers to the Great Lakes states, andanother jet service from Ft. Myers toAtlanta for improved service there andfor connecting flights to other Southernand Midwest cities.

Another request for an exemptionhearing will be filed with the G.A.B.when the National strike is settled.

Congressman L. A. "Skip" Bafalishas been very helpful in trying to getmore complete airline service here, aswell as joining with the entire FloridaDelegation in addressing a request tothe National Labor Relations Board thata settlement with National be effected assoon as possible.

Our office was helpful in getting thePublic Service Commission to allowexpansion of Florida Airlines Serviceinterstate, and these expanded servicesmay be increased further in the future.Florida Airlines is attempting toalleviate the immediate problems hereby providing increased connectingflights to other Florida cities during thisstrike-caused hardship.

It seems that our most pressingneeds could be met by a settlement ofNational's strike. To that end, we haverequested of the National MediationBoard that they make this strike one oftheir priorities in attempting to effect a

GAME AND FRESH WATER FISHCOMMISSION TO MEET SEPT. 18

Bass tournaments, high water in theEverglades, public hunting and theFlorida alligator will highlight theagenda of the Game and Fresh WaterFish Commission meeting scheduled forWednesday, September 18, nearJacksonville.

The September meeting will be heldat the Turtle Inn located at One OceanBoulevard, Atlantic Beach, immediatelysouth of Jacksonville Beach, and willbegin at 9 a.m.

According to Commission ChairmanOgden M. Phipps, the Commission willreview a proposal for a permit systemfor bass fishing tournaments. Thepermit system, as proposed, will applyoi% to tournaments offering more than$1,000 in prizes or those with more than50 anglers. The permit will not berequired for. locally sponsored fishingcontests or local bass club tournaments.

The Commission will also review theincreasing water level in the Evergladesand the effects of the high water onwildlife.

Phipps said, "High water in theEverglades can mean trouble for wildlifeand especially the fawns and yearlingwhite tailed deer. It is impractical toeven consider relocation of a deer herd inan area as vast as the Everglades."

Official action is expected to betaken to establish wildlife managementarea hunting regulations for the newThree Lakes Ranch area located inOsceola County. The area will bepurchased by the state and portions willbe open for managed public huntingduring the 1974-75 hunting season.

In other action, the Commission willdiscuss problems relating to theincreasing population of alligators.According to Phipps, the Commission isfeeing a real dilemma with alligatorcomplaints increasing in direct pro-portion to the population increase. TheCommission is fast running out of time tocapture nuisance alligators and areas inwhich to place the captured amphibians.

On Tuesday, September 17, the fivemember Commission will meet with theadministrative and field staff to discussregular and routine operations. Noformal action is taken at theCommission-staff meeting.

According to Phipps, all meetings ofthe Commission are open, and heextended an invitation to sportsmen andcitizens to attend either or both of themeetings.

FRIENDS, AND VISITORS

The Sanibel-CaptivaIslandei is moving this weekend to 1300Estero Blvd. in the Professional Buildingon Fort Myers Beach. It is with deepaffection that we terminate our long andfond association with oar landlord, LarryHuston, but both our businessundertakings are prospering and gettingthat "middle age spread." Larry'spictures are getting bigger and onr filesare getting fatter, so we're movingbefore we would have to be pried apart.

Our new offices have wall-to-wallcarpeting and a trolley-car forcommuting from the front office to theart. department - (actually that last isanother one of those figments of BetziAbram's imagination, but she insists it'stoo far to hike.)

A big advantage is that PublisherDuff Brown will have Ms own office andno longer be obliged to take turns sittingon the girls' laps. Editor Ginni may evenget her own phone too.

It is also possible that we will beable to leave the gremlins behind andaddressograph plates will cease todisappear in the middle of the night. Some cynic has suggested thatwhenever one moves, one just gets newgremlins - but perish the thought!

There will be no Grain of Sea Saltthis week because the author issomewhere around in one of the officestrapped in a cardboard box. Just as soonas we unpack, we're sure to find her andthe columns will resume.

Meanwhile, our best to you all, andcome see us some time.
