friendly relations between the two countries, namelyIndia and Indonesia, could firmer in the future in vari-ous fields, including in the field of culture,” said AndiM. In the history of celebration of the RI’s Inde-pendence in the Embassy of Indonesia in New Delhi,India, added the Ambassador, was first attended by anart troupe from Bali in the framework of the culturalmission. “It is a historical moment. Hopefully, thisgood cooperation could continue to several countries,”said the Ambassador Andi Ghalib.

Meanwhile, Director General of Hindu ReligiousGuidance Affairs, Prof. Dr. IBG Yudha Triguna, strongly supported the idea of President SusiloBambang Yudhoyono that the soft power diplomacywas necessary to carry out. Therefore, the DirectorGeneral of Hindu Religious Guidance Affairs inter-preted it into a relationship of cooperation in the fieldof religion and religious education between Indonesia(IHDN and Unhi Bali) and the Indian government. Towarm up the cooperation the Directorate Generalbrought along with the artist entourage from Bali per-forming a number of religious art where one of themwas Ramayana ballet while attending the flag raisingceremony of the 65th Anniversary of RI’s Indepen-dence in the Indonesia Embassy to India. SOCHI - Russia on Wednesday hosted Pakistan’s embattled President Asif Ali Zardari andAfghan leader Hamid Karzai for a rare summit aimed at coordinating efforts to improve securityin Afghanistan. The three countries all have a troubled history of relations but Russia will wantthe meeting to show it is playing a constructive role in improving security in a region where his-torically it has had a major influence.

But the key aspect of the meeting israre bilateral encounter between Zardariand Karzai, whose country has consis-tently accused Pakistan’s powerful in-telligence agency of supporting Talibaninsurgents. Pakistan has reacted furi-ously to the allegations, particularly af-ter Karzai declared in July that “this waris in the sanctuaries, funding centres andtraining places of terrorism which areoutside Afghanistan.”

Karzai’s spokesman Sediq Sediqqitold AFP that Karzai and Zardari metearlier in the day, saying more detailswould be given later.

Moscow had made clear it has noplans to send troops to Afghanistan butlike several other ex-Soviet states hasallowed NATO states to use its airspacefor the transit of equipment.

The meeting is the second such four-way meeting of the heads of state, thefirst taking place in the Tajik capitalDushanbe in July 2009. Medvedev’sforeign policy advisor Sergei Prikhodkosaid ahead of the meeting that Russiawould be interested in delivering heli-copters to Afghanistan.

“The question of the delivery of Rus-

sian helicopters will be discussed, if itis raised by the Afghan side,” he added, the Interfax news agency said, addingthat Afghanistan required 100 addi-tional choppers.

Kremlin sources told the agencythat such a move could put Russia indirect competition with NATO statesalso interested in the contract, but thewhole issue of financing also had tobe addressed. The Pakistan leader’svisit that has been cut to only a fewhours after he was heavily criticisedat home for his handling of the devas-tating floods that have caused a hu-manitarian crisis.

Zardari had originally been plan-ning a two-day visit to Russia but thesituation with the floods means hisvisit has been cut to a few hours andhe will not even attend lunch, officialsin Islamabad have said.

Moscow is not a traditional ally ofIslamabad, not least because of its his-torically close ties to Pakistan’s tradi-tional foe India. Tensions also still lin-ger over the Pakistani secret service’sbacking of mujahedeen insurgentsagainst Soviet forces in the 1980s.

JAKARTA - Indonesia and Ma-laysia need to solve their commonborder problems soon and set clearborderlines in order to avoid furtherintrusions and other border conflictsthat often cause tensions betweenthe two countries.

Indonesia should proactivelyseek agreements on its borders withneighboring countries like Malay-sia and Singapore.

“We have always talked aboutthe problem of outlaying islandswith neighboring countries but un-til now we have not yet been able tosolve it so that conflicts often oc-cur,” former president MegawatiSoekarnoputri said. She made thestatement in response to last week‘sincident when Indonesian patrolofficers nabbed seven Malaysianfishermen for allegedly poaching inthe waters of the Indonesian prov-ince of Riau Islands, aroundBintang Island in particular.

In a ‘reciprocal‘ action, the Ma-laysian water police came up to ar-rest three Indonesian patrol officers.

Megawati, who is IndonesianDemocratic Party of Struggle(PDIP) leader, said the governmentshould not merely always want todiscuss geopolitical border prob-lems but should also seek ways howto settle the border problems con-clusively.

“Unfortunately, however, ourborder problems were not touchedin the state-of-the nation address ofPresident Susilo BambangYudhoyono on Monday, Aug 16,2010,” the former president said re-ferring to the president`s address inconnection with the 65th anniver-sary of Indonesia`s IndependenceDay. According to Foreign Minis-ter Marty Natalegawa, the sea bor-der problem with Malaysia nearBintan Island has remained un-solved until now because the neigh-boring country has kept on defer-ring negotiations to settle it.

Frederic Jean Salvi — alsoknown as Ali — came to the at-tention of Indonesian anti-terrorpolice earlier this month after araid on a bomb factory in WestJava, during which they seized acar owned by him.

He said that the decreasing num-ber of Indonesian islands had noth-ing to do with the surge of sea waterdue to global warming or with que-rying of sea sand.

“This is only a matter of data ac-curacy. So far, no surveys on thenumber of islands in Indonesia havebeen conducted,” he said.

Abu Bakar Bashir was arrested lastweek for allegedly setting-up andfunding the camp which involvedAl-Qaeda-linked extremists whowere plotting a wave of attacks inJakarta.

In a press conference today, po-lice confirmed reports that Bashirhad received tens of thousands ofdollars in several installments from“a number of supporters” to fund

the terror plots.National police spokesman

Iskandar Hasan said Bashir man-aged to collect more than one bil-lion rupiah (over 100,000 US dol-lars) and gave the money toDulmatin, one of the mastermindsof 2002 Bali bombing who waskilled in March.

A police source told AFP thisweek that Bashir raised the moneyby distributing videos of the mili-tary-style training exercise.

Indonesia hascompleted surveys onits 13,000 islands

He said that accurate data on thenumber of Indonesian islands wereobtained after the Maritime andFisheries Ministry finalized the va-lidity of its surveys on the namingof islands in the country.

“The validation work has beencompleted. It was finished this year,”he said. He said that in 2012 allnames of islands in Indonesia whichtotal about 13,000 would have beenregistered with the United Nations.

The government will also in thenear future issue government regu-lation which among others includethe names of islands in Indonesia,he said.

RI, Malaysia need to solvecommon border soon

He said that because an agreementon the common maritime borders hadnot yet been reached, incidents involv-ing the two nations always occurred. Therefore, Indonesia is willing to dis-cuss the matter with Malaysia soon.

“We have not begun negotiationsyet and have not yet reached an agree-ment on the borders of several sectionsof our common land and sea territo-ries,” he said. However, Indonesiawould soon discuss the border prob-lem with Malaysia.

“Indonesia is ready any time, but itis Malaysia that is not ready to dis-cuss the problem,” said the ministerafter attending a flag-raising ceremonycommemorating the 65th anniversaryof Indonesian Independence at thepresidential palace on Tuesday.

The minister said Malaysia was notyet able to discuss the sea border is-sue with Indonesia since it had to settlea similar problem with Singapore first. However, Marty stated, the Indonesiangovernment would always defend thecountry‘s sovereignty at any cost.

“Our job is to secure national sov-ereignty. There can be no compromisein this regard,” he added.

Natalegawa said Indonesian repre-sentatives at meetings with the Ma-laysian side on border affairs had of-ten raised the question of Malaysianintrusions into Indonesian waters.

“We always state our objectionsand concern to the Malaysian authori-ties. We have also urged them not torepeat the same mistakes in the future,”said the minister.

In the meantime, Maritime andFisheries Affairs Minister FadelMuhammad said the governmentwould soon make clear the borderlinesbetween Indonesia and Malaysia fol-lowing the arrest of Indonesian patrolofficers by Malaysian police on Fri-day.

“Following the incident we will ar-range and make clear the borderlinesbetween Indonesia and Malaysia,” theminister said.

Fadel said that so far the border-lines between Indonesia and Malay-

Three Indonesian patrol officers,Asriadi (40), Erwan (37) and SeivoGrevo Wewengkang (26), were ar-rested when they intercepted a Ma-laysian fishing vessel which was al-legedly poaching in the Indonesianwaters of Riau Islands province.

Indonesia on Tuesday morningrepatriated the seven Malaysian fish-ermen who were arrested by Indo-nesian patrol officers last Friday.“The seven fishermen have been re-patriated this morning,” NettyHerawati, mediator of the Indone-sian Consulate General for Malay-sia, said.

The seven fishermen were repa-triated using the Samudera Tigaship, which left Batam at 8.30 a.mIndonesian Standard Time forSitulang Laut port of Johor Bahru. They were accompanied by Malay-sian embassy staffers and DewanPriyo Kusumo, a staffer of the In-donesian Consulate General inJohor Bahru.

Balinese community has sev-eral traditional sports and games. Prob-ably, the only one display of thosesports and games can be found in theannual implementation of Bali ArtsFestival (BAF). It poses one of themedia used to preserve and promotethe treasure of cultural heritages to-gether with other cultural elements.

Such an endeavor is required tobe introduced to modern generation. If they never know about those sportsthey will never appreciate theirs. Moreover, they now tend to be at-tracted by modern games that some-times make their parents worried onaccount of characters played in thevideo games or the like. They may turnless patient or when having no money

to play the games it kindles them tocommit crime. No matter small it is, itremains hazardous. However, it doesnot necessarily mean that moderngames must be rejected. The key is thatchildren should be persistently underparental control to minimize the nega-tive impact because it also contains edu-cational value.

Meanwhile, traditional gameswill teach them how to get in touch withnature, prepare the tools, cooperate withothers and tolerate friends. Here, theirpatience is required until the toys canbe completed. In addition, their rela-tionship will establish togetherness inthe level of their understanding. Sincemost traditional games are played out-side the house, so they can know bettertheir surrounding environment andfriends. These values enable them toenrich their outlook.

There are a variety of traditionalsports and games such as stilts, sackrace, coconut-shell clog, tug-of-war,pulling areca-sheath and many others.

When managed well, these traditionalcan create a good business. Craftsmen, for instance, can make the tools andtheir replica that may be taken advan-tage for souvenir by tourists. Moreover,if they are designed with the touch ofBalinese ornamental styles they aregoing to give added value.

In addition, the games like stilts(tajog) can become an optional attrac-tion for tourists. Getting involved in thegames of course will drive a pleasureof its own. Try change the orientation. If the games or sports usually playedby the locals, let’s share them with ourguests. Then, if the games usuallyplayed at smooth or even land can beplayed with a slight challenge such asby crossing shallow-watered river oreven on the beach, near the edges ofwaves. With different condition andbackground along this challenge, it cer-tainly becomes an attractive and uniqueadventure.

Without doubt, there are moretraditional games and sports that needexploring and discovering. These tra-ditions actually are potential productsbecoming attractive games offered tovisitors. While preserving, we can alsooffer something different from moderngames offered by other destinations. IfBali will ‘go green’ with its organic ag-riculture, its tradition can also offer ‘eco-friendly’ attraction where it is unneces-sary to exploit the nature excessivelybut it even can go hand in hand withthe preservation of local tradition. Oneday, the treasures of traditional gamesand sports could be coalesced into a ‘tra-ditional games park.’ Ultimately, let’sshare the fun of our traditions by in-volving visitors in the experience as thelocals do. TOKYO - Japan’s PrimeMinister Naoto Kan plans to fleshout new stimulus measures asearly as September in a bid to safe-guard a recovery threatened by astrong yen, a report said Wednes-day.

Additional employmentprogrammes for young people, ex-tra financing assistance for smalland medium-sized businesses andmeasures to boost consumptionhave been proposed, the Nikkeidaily said without citing sources.

Officials are also discussingextending ongoing consumer in-centive programmes for energy-saving electronics, which expire atyear-end, it said.

The Kan administration isexpected to tap unspent govern-ment funds worth up to 1.7 trillionyen (20 billion dollars) for the ad-ditional programmes and willlikely avoid fresh bond issuance, the Nikkei said.

However, the coalition part-ner of the ruling Democratic Partyof Japan has asked for a fresh eco-nomic package worth 11 trillion

The Obama administration in-vited banking executives Tuesdayto offer advice on changing thegovernment’s role in backing themortgage market. While they dis-agreed on the exact level of supportneeded, the group overwhelminglyadvocated for the government tomaintain a large role in the $11 tril-lion market.

If the government pulledout, millions of Americanswouldn’t be able to convince banksto take the risk of giving them homeloans, the executives said. Endinggovernment support could lead toa spike in mortgage rates. Thatcould deter many from buyinghomes, and banks, mortgage lend-ers and Realtors would lose moneyover time.

“It will take on a differentform, but there is a role for govern-ment,” Kevin Chavers, a managingdirector at Morgan Stanley, said inan interview.

Most attendees agreed thetime had come to do away withFannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Res-cuing the two mortgage giants hascost the government nearly $150billion so far.

Bill Gross, the managing di-rector for bond giant Pimco, sug-gested Fannie and Freddie shouldbe formally merged into the gov-ernment. He also called on the ad-ministration to allow millions ofhomeowners to automatically refi-nance their loans to help stimulatethe economy.

A more widely held view atthe conference is for the govern-ment to do away with Fannie andFreddie, and instead provide a guar-antee that mortgage investors getpaid even if borrowers default indroves.

WASHINGTON - The call from business for less government has a notable exception: themortgage market.

Figuring out a plan forFannie and Freddie is also a politi-cal challenge for President BarackObama and his party. Republicanshave seized on the administration’smanagement of Fannie and Freddieto illustrate Democrats’ push forgrowing the reach of the federalgovernment.

While the banking industryhas joined Republicans in criticiz-ing the administration for institut-ing stronger regulations of WallStreet, they support the governmentplaying a large role in the mortgagemarket.

“There would be a lot ofhomeowners who wouldn’t be ableto afford homes because we’d bedealing with higher interest rates.”said S.A. Ibrahim, chief executiveof mortgage insurer Radian GroupInc.

Treasury Secretary TimothyGeithner pledged on Tuesday “fun-damental change” to the structureof Fannie and Freddie. The mort-gage giants profited tremendouslyduring good times but burdened tax-payers with losses when the hous-ing market went bust. He said thetwo companies weren’t the onlycause of the financial crisis, butmade it worse.

Fannie and Freddie buy mort-gages and package them into securi-ties with a guarantee against default. They have ensured that millions ofAmericans can get home loans — evenafter the housing market collapsed.

The two companies, the Fed-eral Housing Administration and theVeterans Administration togetherbacked about 90 percent of loans madein the first half of the year, accordingto trade publication Inside MortgageFinance.

Geithner did not offer a specific

exit strategy for Fannie and Freddie. But he said “it is our responsibility tomake sure that we create a system thatis not vulnerable to these same fail-ures happening again.” The adminis-tration is expected to offer a plan nextyear.

One option that dominated thediscussion Tuesday is for the govern-ment to collect money from the mort-gage industry and set up an insurancefund that could be used to cover lossesduring a severe downturn.

This would prevent taxpayersfrom having to foot the bill for the in-dustry.

Some want the administrationto take more dramatic actions.

Gross said Fannie andFreddie’s function should be con-solidated into one governmentagency that would issue mortgage-backed securities. Without such asolid guarantee, mortgage rateswould soar, he warned.

He also told the administrationthat the economic recovery requiredmore government stimulus, particu-larly in the housing market. He sug-gested the administration push for theautomatic refinancing of millions ofhome loans backed by Fannie andFreddie.

Refinancing those loans atthe lowest mortgage rates in de-cades would give Americans moremoney each month. That wouldboost consumer spending by $50billion to $60 billion and lift hous-ing prices by as much as 10 percent,he said.

Without such stimulus in thenext six months, Gross said, theeconomy will move at a “snail’s pace.”

Obama officials say they donot plan to enact such a program, which has been the subject of intenserumors on Wall Street in recent weeks.

China to spend $3B onalternative energy, trees

The plan aims to have 23 percentof the country covered with forests in

The report came as Kan isset to meet Bank of Japan Gover-nor Masaaki Shirakawa Mondayto discuss steady appreciation ofthe yen, which recently hit 15-year highs against the dollar, threatening a fragile export-ledrecovery.

Speculation is rife that thecentral bank will face more politi-cal pressure to offer further eas-ing policies.

Fears that Japan’s recoveryfrom recession is fading wereheightened by weaker-than-ex-pected gross domestic productdata Monday, showing that theeconomy grew by an annualised0.4 percent in April-June.

That figure was down froma revised 4.4 percent in the previ-ous three months, missing fore-casts of 2.3 percent growth.

The government hopes tosubmit an extra budget at an ex-traordinary parliament session inthe autumn, aiming to enact it bythe year’s end, the Nikkei news-paper said.

Aniston was joined at the fete by her co-stars JasonBateman, who escorted his wife Amanda Anka, PatrickWilson and a blue-haired Juliette Lewis, along with thefilm’s composer Alex Wurman and actor friends Jon Heder,Kathy Najimy, Ethan Suplee and Richard Portnow.

But all eyes were on Aniston, who looked slim andlovely in a strapless two-tone Lavin minidress, as shewalked the red carpet alone. Her solo status in real lifeis reflected in “The Switch,” but she’s not quite readyto follow her character into being a single mother.

But choice for women is an alternative that Anistoninsists is a viable option in the 21st century, as she toldreporters at an earlier press conference.

“The movie supports what’s sort of currently happen-ing in our world today, that we as women have the choicesand options of when and how to have children. Familyisn’t necessarily the traditional mother, father, two chil-dren and a dog named Spot. It’s like love is love, and fam-ily is what is around you and who’s in your immediatesort of sphere,” she said. “What I love about this movie isthat it’s saying it’s not the traditional sort of stereotype ofwhat family, as a society, we’ve been taught. It’s evolved.”

And as for the question about whether the ex-Mrs.Brad Pitt will ever have children of her own? Well, the41-year-old superstar sticks by her past statements whenit comes to that one. “I’ve said it years before. I’ve saidit. I still say it as of today. Yeah, I would like to be amother someday.”

Some experts are urging teenag-ers to turn down the volume on theirdigital music players, suggestingloud music through earbuds may beto blame — although hard evidenceis lacking. They warn that slighthearing loss can cause problems inschool and set the stage for hearingaids in later life.

“Although speech will be detect-able, it might not be fully intelligible,”he said. While the researchers didn’tsingle out iPods or any other devicefor blame, they found a significantincrease in high-frequency hearingloss, which they said may indicatethat noise caused the problems. Andthey cited a 2010 Australian study thatlinked use of personal listening de-vices with a 70 percent increased riskof hearing loss in children.

“I think the evidence is out therethat prolonged exposure to loudnoise is likely to be harmful to hear-ing, but that doesn’t mean kids can’tlisten to MP3 players,” Curhan said.

The study is based on data fromthe National Health and NutritionExamination Survey conducted by abranch of the Centers for DiseaseControl and Prevention. The findingsappear in Wednesday’s Journal of theAmerican Medical Association.

PARIS - Liverpool, Juventus andbig-spending Manchester City are threeof the top-rank teams hoping to avoidan early curtailment to their Europeanambitions in the Europa League onThursday. A welter of high-profile clubsfrom across the continent will competein the first-leg matches of thetournament’s play-off round, all gun-ning for one of 37 slots in the groupphase alongside defending championsAtletico Madrid.

Roy Hodgson was on the losing sidein last year’s final after leading Fulhamto a surprise appearance in the decider, but the experienced English coach hassince jumped ship to Liverpool.

His new employers continue theirassault on this season’s competitionagainst Trabzonspor, and Hodgson sayshe will select holding midfielder JavierMascherano to face the Turkish sidedespite his desire to leave the club.

“Of course I would play him onThursday,” said Hodgson, whose sidedrew 1-1 at home to Arsenal in theirPremier League opener on Sunday.

“He is a Liverpool player and I hopehe will continue to be a Liverpoolplayer. For me, he will always be avail-able for selection until the day comeswhen he’s no longer here.”

GENEVA - Tottenham Hotspur suffered a huge fright in their historic bid for a ChampionsLeague berth on Tuesday, losing 3-2 to Swiss side Young Boys in Berne in the first leg of theirplay off. Spurs got off to a nightmare start, going three down within the first half hour as theBernese side took full advantage of their artificial pitch.

defence through the middle, allow-ing the Cameroon international tooutpace Michael Dawson andwrong-foot Gomes with a deft fin-ish.

The Bernese seized a third aquarter of an hour later as XavierHochstrasser sneaked behind theSpurs left back to pick up a su-perbly weighted pass by Swiss in-ternational hope MorenoCostanzo.

Tottenham nonetheless seized avital away goal from a corner twominutes before half time. Bassongoutleapt the Swiss defence andplaced a sizzling header aboveWoelffli’s head.

Playing with Pavlyuchenko in-stead of the lanky Peter Crouchupfront, Tottenham ultimatelycapitalised on the Russian’s pre-vious experience of the speedy ar-tificial pitch in the second half.

Harry Redknapp brought onNiko Kranjcar for his largely in-

effective fellow Croat LukaModric in midfield, allowingSpurs to dampen the Young Boysgrowing confidence, whileRobbie Keane displaced JermainDefoe. Pavyluchenko was both atthe origin and finish of the flow-ing move with Keane that pro-duced the Premier League side’ssecond goal in the 82nd minute.

But the hungrier looking Swissalmost volleyed in two more onthe break, adding to the warningsignals for the return leg in Lon-don.

“It might be easier for us to gothere and attack rather than sitback and defend,” saidHochstrasser. “The first half hourwasn’t good enough, but we stucktogether and sorted it out at half-time,” said Spurs centre-backDawson.

Both Tottenham and YoungBoys are aiming for a historic firststep into the Champions’ League.

LONDON – How London’s Olympic Stadiumwill be used after the 2012 Games is expected tobe determined by the end of the year, with the for-mal process to find a tenant beginning Wednes-day. The company in charge of ensuring the post-games success of the Olympic venues has giveninterested parties until Sept. 30 to lodge proposalsand it wants to establish key terms for a long-termlease by Dec. 31.

The 80,000-seat Olympic Stadium, which willhost the opening and closing ceremonies and ath-letics events, was due to be downscaled after thegames to a 25,000-capacity venue mainly for trackand field.

But as interest grew in more widespread usesfor the $840 million east London venue, the Olym-pic Park Legacy Company began a feasibility studywhich attracted more than 100 expressions of in-terest in three months. The two main potential in-vestors to emerge so far are Premier League clubWest Ham, which wants to leave Upton Park, andAmerican sports and entertainment giant AEG,which runs the former Millennium Dome site nearthe Olympic Park.

“The stadium is at the heart of the OlympicPark and securing the most appropriate solution iscrucial to our long-term aspirations for the area,”said Margaret Ford, who is chair of the OlympicPark Legacy Company.

The legacy company wants the winning bid-der to sign a long-term lease by March 31, 2011,and start revamping the stadium in November2012. The aim is for events to resume on the siteduring 2014.

Bidders have been told they must have “thefinancial capability to meet the costs of (the) trans-formation of the stadium ... and be able to demon-strate ongoing financial strength.” Research con-ducted by the legacy company showed that a ca-pacity ranging between 25,000 and 60,000 seats

MIAMI - Miami Heat superstar LeBronJames has told GQ magazine that he will carryextra inspiration into his games against hisformer club, the Cleveland Cavaliers, after be-ing called a quitter by the team owner. “I dohave motivation, a lot of motivation,” Jamessaid in an article made public on Tuesday.

James departed the Cavalaiers last monthto sign a blockbuster six-year deal with theMiami Heat, joining friends Dwyane Wadeand Chris Bosh and prompting anger fromCavaliers’ fans, some of whom burned rep-lica James jerseys.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert called James“selfish”, “a quitter”, “narcissistic” and “self-promotional” and said he felt betrayed by “theself-titled former king” leaving the team, vow-ing the Cavaliers would win their first titlebefore James won his first NBA crown.

The remarks brought Gilbert a 100,000-dollar fine from the NBA and a tough responsefrom James in the magazine article. “I don’tthink he ever cared about LeBron,” James saidof Gilbert to GQ. “My mother always toldme: ‘You will see the light of people whenthey hit adversity. You’ll get a good sense oftheir character.’

“Me and my family have seen the charac-ter of that man.” The two-time reigning NBAMost Valuable Player also rejected the quit-ter label Gilbert hung upon him for playofffailures.

“Every night on the court I give my all,and if I’m not giving 100 percent, I criticizemyself,” James said. James said he would stillmake his decision in a television special be-cause the program raised 2.5 million dollarsfor a youth charity. It lured 10 million view-ers but drew widespread criticism as beingtoo far over the top.
