Presidents Report

Last week we had the second last fellowship night for this Rotary year at Cilantro the Student Training Restau-rant, situated at the back of the Hemisphere Conference Centre in South Road.

Apparently the restaurant will be relocated to within the TAFE college in the not too distant future as, according to Di Hone who spoke to a Hemisphere staff member on leaving, the Conference Cen-tre is being taken over by an Aged Care group and will converted to a facility for this purpose.

Apart from being open for lunch Wednesdays to Fri-days and dinner Monday to Friday, the Cilantro also have special events such as a Celebrity Chef Degustation Dinner, Industry Icon Din-ners where students work along side some of Australia’s best known chefs and an Oaks Day lunch.

The Cilantro represents the real side of becoming a chef with lots of hard work and learning from the experienced chefs as distinct from the instant celebrity kind currently being popped out by popular television series.

A big thank you to Antony Nixon’s mother who kindly donated $1,000 to the club on Thursday which will be added to our usual donation of $1,000 to Australian Ro-tary Health. Thank you Antony on your mother’s behalf.

The last Presidents’ meeting was held at the Mulgrave Country Club last Friday night with Presidents Elects and incoming Assistant Governors also invited. Kay Gordon from Mordialloc will take over from Wil Cornelis-sen as our A.G. in Ken’s year.

A couple of items of interest that were discussed related to;

the Constitution currently being updated by the Ro-tary Club of Hampton has had some issues that

need to be resolved with R.I. Hamptons Constitution has finally been approved and we will be updating ours by 30th June this year.

Membership in the district has increased from 1,251 at the start of July last year to 1,277 as at 31st March this year.

The penultimate Board Meeting for this year will be held at the RSL at 6.00pm on Wednesday with a number of items to be discussed. Outcomes from the meeting will be in next week’s newsletter. Di-rectors will now be preparing for handover to their replacement or slaving away on their contribution to the Annual Report.

David Hone will be discussing George Washington, David Rushworth is in the Chair and Greg is Acting Sergeant.

See you at VGC,

Robert

Update on Jewellery Sale

For those members that are unaware, we recently had a large amount of end of season jewellery range donated by Luxe Accessories, for sale by our Rotary club. This jewellery range is mainly aimed at the 15 – 30 year old young population. We have just recently had our second sale within the community. It was at the Pioneer Church in Park Road, Cheltenham on last Saturdays very wet day. It was very quiet and everyone was hiding from the rain. However, our team of six ladies managed to sell further stock and add to the balance of money raised so far to $1,483. Thanks to this happy group of ladies, we have once again raised the profile of Rotary in the Community while

emptying the boxes in our spare room. Many thanks to them all. Megan

Attendance at Rotary

As we are always looking for new members we

need to be able to give visitors an outline of what

they would be committing to if they were to join us

and to tell them the sort of work we do.

Everyone will know what our projects and success-

es have been in service to the local and internation-

al communities and will be able to talk about them.

But there may be some confusion on the attend-

ance requirements for membership.

Basically we try to pervade an atmosphere of a

happy club of like-minded people who have fun and

enjoy their weekly meetings. This encourages peo-

ple to turn up to as many meetings as possible so

they do not miss out on what is happening and go-

ing on.

There are however some Rotary rules which we are

obliged to comply with.

Basically a member must attend at least 50% of Ro-

tary club meetings in each half year and that should

include at least 30% of their own club meetings.

They can attend any other Rotary club meeting at

any time, or take part in a recognised Rotary event/

function to make up for missing a meeting at their

own club. A member can also go on line to a meet-

ing of a Rotary E-club and so get an attendance

credit for an otherwise missed meeting (see below).

The Board of our Club is always accommodating in

giving Leave of Absence when members go over-

seas on business/holidays or longer visits to loca-

tions in Australia. The same certainly applies to

sickness or family difficulties.

The attendance requirement should not normally be

a problem. Leave of Absence is almost always

granted in special situations. However no one can

be considered a contributing and active member of

a club if he/she does not turn up as regularly as

reasonably possible.

I hope this brief synopsis helps.

Rotary “E-Clubs” in Melbourne There are two such Clubs in Melbourne, ReC of

Melbourne in District 9800 and ReC of Greater Mel-

bourne in District 9810.

However, only the latter appears to have provision

for “make-up” attendance by Rotarians from other

Clubs. You can do this by following the link;

Fuji Blossoms Photograph by Yuga Kurita, National Geographic "I left my house after midnight to

get there in the morning, when

the air is clearer and the cherry

blossoms look more beautiful.

When I was L.the sun was

dawning, and I saw that Fuji was

hiding behind clouds. So I

parked and slept in my car for a

while, planning to go back home

after waking up. An hour later, I

sensed something and woke.

What I saw was Fuji emerging

from the clouds. I didn't try to

focus the scene perfectly be-

cause I liked the slight “bokeh”

effect on Mount Fuji in the back-

ground."
