Due to high-end strategies and careful manipulations, we were able to not win the trophy (first prize is the trophy, and usually includes organising the following-year golf day) but magically won second prize, which was two Golf umbrellas. This was won by David and Di Hone. It is important to note that Di had told David if she didn’t win the umbrellas, both of which she claimed for herself, he had to buy her one, so everything worked out exactly as it should. Several others joined us at the Golf Club around 4.30pm for drinks, BBQ and presentations. A great time was had by all, with Noble Park taking off the trophy once again. DISTRICT CONFERENCE SPECIAL EDITION

Report to Members

Well, what a fantastic conference! If you thought the pre-vious ones were good, think again. For those who at-tended, a review, and for those who didn’t, a synopsisthat should have you booking early for next year.

It all started with the golf fanatics heading north onWednesday, with a stop for a ploughman’s lunch atFowles Wine at Avenel on the Hume Highway (with aglass of wine), then on to Wangaratta where we unload-ed our gear at the Hermitage Motor Inn, which we hadfully booked out for our Club. Then it was back to the Hermitage where, beingBeaumaris Rotarians, we sat about the pool and hada refreshing drink before heading off to our pillows. And the conference hadn’t even started yet.Friday saw an early start for some, with many takingthe opportunity for a walk about Wang, and a

chance to register and collect their conference gear. For some others, a bit of a lie-in was most appropri-ate.

The conference got underway at 1pm Friday at thefabulous Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, witharound 500 attendees from the 50 odd Clubs in theDistrict. DG Brian had decided on a low-key, no-fussstyle which was much appreciated by many. Ofspecial note was the extended breaks between ses-sions, which allowed everyone to wander about

Wang, talk to fellow Club members, or catch up withRotary Friends. I will not go through all the speakersand their topics, as I think you had to be there andlisten for yourself to really get the benefits. Howev-er there will be heaps of info on the District websitefor anyone interested in seeing what we all saw andheard. Suffice to say the format, the extendedbreaks and the enthusiasm of the attendees madefor a great conference, and I have never seen somany seats continue to be filled throughout the Fri-day afternoon, Saturday and Sunday morning ses-sions.

Trying to summarize, Brian Tydin was a wonderfulMC as always, we were entertained on several oc-casions by a fantastic Magician/comedian JonathanUsher from NZ, who is a Rotarian and DG Nomineeas well as a professional magician and successfulbusinessman. The speakers included an Artist, sixRotary partners who went to India for the 24 hourmass child Polio immunisation program, a talk oncyber bullying, insights into this year’s Chelsea Flow-er Show contribution from Australia, talks about how

health promotes peace, and how diet can influenceanxiety and depression, especially in children, an

insight into how the Foundation grants will work, andmany other enthralling topics. Of these our veryown Kerrie Geard was on stage with the AustralianGSE team, who demonstrably showed the benefits ofthis wonderful Rotary program.

Friday night is traditionally Club Dinner Night. How-ever being Beaumaris Rotary Club, we started offwith pre-dinner drink drinks (G&T’s) courtesy of Da-vid and Joy Lea, followed by the aforesaid pre-dinner drinks (and nibbles provided by Pres Johnand Sue, Heather and others), before getting on thewalking bus to café Martini Restaurant. Our Clubentertained Chelsea, Hampton and HuntingdaleClubs as well as the 35 of our own Club, a total of59. The venue was a restaurant in the main street,on a balcony, and was also attended by other Rota-

ry Clubs, so things were a bit hectic to start with butsettled down once everyone got a drink. DavidHone regaled us with quiz questions no-one couldanswer, but Megan managed to give out all theprizes anyway.

Saturday Night is the District Gala Dinner, and thetheme, in honour of St Patrick, was “a touch ofgreen”. Being Beaumaris a “touch” was never goingto do it for us, and we went a bit overboard as usu-al, but made a splendid presence dressed all inblack, with touches of green all about, including

flashing earrings which looked great on the dancefloor. It is rumoured some members even had somegreen where it shouldn’t be seen!! We arrived in thewalking bus, and being by far the largest group, made a characteristic entrance. Nevertheless, alt-hough listed in the top 6, we again missed out on theprize for” best” dressed.

The night was all about fun, food, wine and dancing, with two great bands playing Irish and traditionaldance music till the wee small hours. The event was

held in a huge marquee in the park, at least 100metres long, with a live tree in the middle, on whichwere hung the wishes from the wishing well, whichraised funds for a worthy cause.

I was suitably surprised to see so many of us at theopening sessions on Sunday Morning. Following theSunday morning session, we all had a box lunch be-fore heading in our various directions, some headingfurther north, some off to Beechworth, some backhome to Melbourne.

There is far too much that happened for me to in-clude it all here, but I do especially want to thank myco-OTC Megan who so obviously did the lion’s shareof the work to make sure Beaumaris Rotary had afun conference, Jenny and Graeme at Hermitage

Motor Inn, who looked after us wonderfully, andBelinda and Mark at Café Martini, who managed tolook after a huge number of people with grace andpatience.

I would also like to congratulate DG Brian Martinand Sue, and the huge team who put the conferencetogether, for a wonderful, entertaining, thought pro-voking and enlightening conference.

Finally, I think it is important to acknowledge Presi-

dent John and Sue for sticking it out and attendingthe conference, despite their personal traumas andissues. Well done guys.

And finally, I’m sure PE Bob won’t mind me tellingyou all that next year the conference is in March atBendigo, where we have already booked 20 roomsat a high-end Motel close to the conference venue. Istrongly encourage all members to lock it into theirdiaries now. These conferences are a wonderful

way to learn more about Rotary, spend time gettingto know fellow Club Members, have fun and makenew friends.

Please enjoy the fantastic pics elsewhere in the bul-letin.
