PRESIDENT’S COMMENT

RCOB played hosts to the District New Generations evening

for the Kingston and Bayside cluster clubs last Tuesday with

members and guests attending from Aspendale, Braeside,

Dingley Village, Hampton, Moorleigh Moorabin, Noble Park

and Sandringham.

Sixteen RCOB members (including Fred Hofmann) together

with the DG Brian Martin, DGE Merv Ericson and District NewGeneration Chair Carol Lawton, New Generation speakers,

parents, members of the other attending clubs and the invited

School Principals made up the total of 65 who enjoyed an ex-

cellent meal in the big room at the Beaumaris and were very

capably looked after by Leanne Doll from the Beaumaris and

her staff.

But it was the speakers who were the main attraction; Rowan

Rampton spoke of the experience of attending Camp Awak-

enings, Nicholas Cross from St Bedes represented Turkey at

MUNA, Antoinette Leigh enthused about RYPEN and Stephanie

McMurray was the recipient of a Rotary Youth Leadership

Award (RYLA). Joanne Shepherd from Mentone Girls Second-

ary College had just returned from the NYSF and was still ex-

cited. As Vice School Captain she could be a possible candi-

date to assist with setting up Interact at that school. Damien

Croke was a Youth Exchange student who spent a year in

Germany and Morgan Roberts was one of the founding mem-bers of the Monash Rotaract Club. The speakers all spoke for

a maximum of 10 minutes and all were a delight to listen to.

On Thursday night James and Megan invited the upcom-

ing Conference attendees (including Fred) to their place

to discuss the dress for the “Theme Night”. But it was also

Valentine’s Day so the evening had a very Valentines

theme right down to the chocolate hearts and heart

shaped hors d’oeuvres and sandwiches. Well done

James and Megan. Despite some interesting discussion

after a few cocktails; agreement on the theme was

reached.

David Greenall and I attended the D9810 Grants Man-

agement Seminar on Friday night. Under the Rotary

Foundation's Future Vision initiative to start in July 2013,

Clubs must be qualified to participate in the Foundation's

grants program and must be qualified each year. David

has prepared an article for inclusion in this bulletin. Da-

vid has accepted the role of implementing, managing and

maintaining Club qualification for the next couple of

years.

President John is hoping to return to this weeks meeting

and we look forward to welcoming him back.

Please note that Fred has received a couple of mentions

because I neglected to include him in the names of those

that attended the GSE Welcome Home dinner, sorry

Fred.

Good News on Rotary Grants

Last Friday, PE Bob and I attended a presentation by theDistrict grants people to advise the new arrangements forgrants. I had agreed with Bob that I would be the Rotari-an responsible for grant information and records for ourClub.

The good news is that there will be a lot more Districtmoney available for the type of grant we’ve successfullyobtained in the past. We’ve had 3 district grants in the

last few years plus a major grant for President John’snominated Sabu project.

For 2013-14, some $62,000 will be available to the Dis-trict compared with about $20,000 in the past. Districtwill also be able to access a further $62,000 for morespecialized projects (Global projects).

There must be a downside and that is the paperwork!RCOB will be required to enter into a “Memorandum ofUnderstanding” (MOU) with District. This covers matterssuch as; appointing at least one club member to imple-ment, manage and maintain club annual qualification forgrants; financial management, including a separate bankaccount for grant funds and a document retention systemfor a minimum of 5 years.

Application indications (not full detail) for 2013-14 aredue in May 2013 and so the club needs to have infor-mation of possible grants to District much earlier than inthe past.

There are many other details such as the size of grantsavailable, (depends on the type of project). I have allthe information on this.

District Conference

The Rotary District 9810Conference is being heldthis year in Wangaratta,from Friday 15 to Sunday

17 March, with 36 delegates from our Club attend-ing, of whom 16 will also be playing in the pre-conference District Golf competition at WangarattaGolf Course.

As is the custom for our Club, we this week held apre-conference conference to tidy up loose ends,attended by 29 of the delegates, to ensure every-one knew where to go, what to do and what towear. Apologies from Sue McArthur, Geoff, Kerrie,the Hone’s and Pres. John and Sue Manks.

As you will see from the photos, it was a typicalRCOB gathering, with Sergeant Tony’s quiz on Val-entine’s Day, pre-drink cocktails, and lots of merri-ment.

Your delegates are now ready to represent yourClub in usual RCOB fashion, and we are all lookingforward to a fun and informative weekend.

Last Friday some 150 golfers, including eleven fromRCOB, entered the charity golf day organised by

the Rotary Club of Dingley Village, played at King-swood Golf Club.

Also present was a contingent from the AustralianGolfing Federation of Rotarians which supported theDingley golf event.

With a total of 34 Stableford points, Kerrie was thehighest scoring Rotarian in the competition and shewon the Melbourne Cup, a trophy donated to theAGFR by the Rotary Club of Melbourne in 1925,

shortly after it was chartered as the first Rotary clubin Australia in 1921. She is the first lady ever to winthe trophy.

Kerrie also came third in the overall ladies competi-tion and won a prize for the straightest drive.

Incidentally Dingley Rotary Club presented a chequefor $10,000 from the proceeds of the event to theReach Foundation, and Jim Stynes’ sister was presentto receive the cheque.
