3. To provide information about the BA (Hons) / BSc (Hons) Secondary Education with QTS* programme, as well as Edge Hill University’s academic and pastoral facilities and to enable you to make an informative judgement about the programme and subject specialism you are applying for.

Edge Hill University has been at the forefront of Teacher Education for more than 135 years and enjoys a national reputation as one of the largest quality providers of Teacher-Training in England.

As well as the high expectations Edge Hill has of you, there are also national standards and requirements for ITT which can be downloaded from the Department for Education website:

http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/leadership/deployingstaff/a00205581/teachers-standards1-sep-2012

2.2 OverviewYou will demonstrate your achievement of these standards in a variety of ways (more detail will be provided at the interview).

Through the Edge Hill University based course which is organised as follows;

1. Professional Practice: This is designed to provide you with a range of experiences across the age range for which you are training. During your placements you will be supported, guided and assessed by trainees mentors, teachers and Edge Hill University tutors.

You will apply knowledge, understanding, skills and abilities within a range of school settings.

The pattern of Placement Experience is:

An initial placement in a secondary school/setting A developmental placement in a secondary school/setting A synoptic placement in a different secondary school/setting.

2. Personal and Professional Conduct: This strand has several elements. The first is concerned with your own development as an independent learner within the context of Higher Education. The current educational context is considered as well as teaching and learning strategies and the needs of learners. The second element centres on professional aspects within teaching: a range of generic education issues and policies such as national priorities in Secondary Education, equal opportunities, Special Educational Needs, the National Strategy at Key Stage 3 and the pre-vocational curriculum. Within your curriculum area as well as during your time on placement you will have further

Page 12 of 21

opportunities to consider how such issues impact upon the profession and today’s education system and to develop your understanding of them. The third element focuses on teachers’ legal responsibilities, statutory requirements and on cross-curricular issues – particularly professional conduct and relationships with children, parents and other agencies.

3. Teaching Skills: This strand, by its very nature is interlinked with Personal and Professional Conduct but has a much more subject based focus. It considers the elements of the Teachers’ Standards (Revised, 2013) concerned with subject specialist teaching in Secondary schools. These include, planning, teaching and learning, classroom management, inclusion, monitoring, assessment and target setting.

4. Subject Knowledge: This will give you the opportunity to develop your specialist subject to honours degree level, thus enabling you to teach in the Secondary age phase range.

As a Trainee Teacher, you are expected to behave in a professional manner at all times, at Edge Hill and during school- based training.

This involves;

regular attendance, excellent punctuality, demonstrating high standards of behaviour both in school and at Edge Hill, completing work satisfactorily to set deadlines, demonstrating commitment to the achievement of the highest standards of

performance, in both Edge Hill University and school-based work.

You are required to have passed skills tests in numeracy and literacy before starting the programme.

When can I take the tests?

You must have submitted an application form for an ITT programme before you can register for the tests. Registration and booking for the skills tests will be via the Department for Education website.

Go to http://www.education.gov.uk/teachskillstests and follow the link to ‘Skills test registration’.

What format are the tests and where can I take them?

The tests are computerised and can be taken at any of approximately 150 Pearson VUE Test Centres throughout the UK, including the on-campus Pearson VUE Test Centre at Edge Hill University. To locate your nearest Pearson VUE Test Centre, go to http://www.pearsonvue.com/ta/locate/.

At what level are the tests set?

The length of the tests and questions are appropriate for key skills level 2/3.

Do I still need GCSE grade C or equivalent in Mathematics and English Language?

Yes. The tests do not replace the GCSE grade C equivalence entry requirement.

What is the pass mark for the tests?

The pass mark for each test is 63 per cent.

How can I prepare for the tests?

Online practice tests, details of test content and test format, and recommended books are available on the Department for Education website.

Go to http://www.education.gov.uk/teachskillstests and follow the links to ‘Numeracy skills test’ or ‘Literacy skills test’.

If I fail a test can I resit it?

Yes. You are allowed to resit each test up to 2 times. If you do not pass each test within 3 attempts your application cannot progress. So we recommend that you make use of all the preparation resources on the Department for Education website before taking each test.
