The Progression of the Atom Through History Project

OverviewOver the next few days, you will be researching one scientist’s contributions to the development of the atom, as we know it today. You will be working in teams of 3 or 4 on this project. Each member of the team will have a job to complete for the group, and at the end of the research period, you will be presenting your scientist to the entire class. By the end of the presentations, our class will have information on six important scientists and their contributions to the development of the atom.

The ProjectThere will be four parts to this project, which will include the following – A one page report. An advertising poster. A timeline of events. An oral presentation.

Job Descriptions

Communications Specialist – Your job as communications specialist will be to write a one-page computer generated report on the scientist your group is assigned. This report should include a brief history of the scientist, a summary of the scientist’s work on the

history of the atom, an explanation of any experiments preformed by the scientist, and any interesting facts or stories about the scientist. You will also

be in charge of making sure your group is on task during the in-class research days.Qualifications: A computer at home, good writing skills, and a leader.Public Relations Specialist – Your job as public relations specialist will be to create a poster advertising unique information about the scientist that you are assigned. This

advertisement should be colorful and neatly done. You can include pictures that you draw or find on your own that must relate to your scientist. You are also responsible for helping the communications specialist by helping this person gather information for their report.

Qualifications: A creative mind, access to poster board, and a helpful manner.Historical Specialist --Your job as the historical specialist is to create a timeline of significant events that happened within the lifetime of the scientist you are assigned.

This timeline must be an accurate account of the scientist’s life with at least ten significant events. Your timeline must be neatly done, and large enough to be seen during the presentation.

Qualifications: Detail-oriented, knowledge of scientist you are assigned, creative.Presentation SpecialistYour job as the presentation specialist is to create a speech that you will be giving to the class about your scientist. This speech will include a

summary of the information your group has found about your scientist, any significant contributions your scientist has made regarding the atom, interesting facts and stories, and explanations of any experiments performed by them. This speech should be about 3-5 minutes in length, and you may use note cards as a guide when doing the speech.

Qualifications: Ability to speak in front of class, knowledge about scientist, strong voice to use during the speech.

Here is how you will be working on this project over the next week:Day OneMs. Gibson will assign and explain the project.In your groups of 4, you will determine who will do what job in your group and write it down here

Homework: Look up on the Internet or go to the library to find one additional source for your research. Bring

this in this week for your group. Begin getting poster board or other supplies needed to do your job.

Day TwoWork in class on the project collecting information for your specific job on your scientist.Discuss each of your jobs with the groups at the end of the period, and decide a general plan for your team.By the time you leave today, you should all know what you need to be working on and what you each will be doing for the

presentation.

Day ThreeThis will be the last day in which class time can be used for research. Any other research will have to be completed on

your own. You should be starting on writing a rough draft for whatever your job is, and discussing this rough draft with your team

members.Homework: Work on rough draft of whatever your job is at home. Bring in materials that you will need to have

to complete your project for Friday (markers, poster paper, pictures, etc).

Day 4This is the last day you will have to work in class on the group presentation. You should be planning what you each will

be saying, and practicing this as a group. You should also be finishing the final copy of your project.

Day 5Projects are due today! Presentations will begin. You must turn in the paper, the poster and timelines, and be ready to

present on this day. If you are absent on the day your group presents you will get a zero for this part of the grade.
