What is Higher Education? Higher Education encompasses a diverse range of courses and qualifications such as Masters and Honours degrees, Foundation degrees, Higher National Diplomas and Certificates as well as professional qualifications.

The term ‘higher education’ includes all university-level education at Level 4 or above and involves studying for a degree or similar advanced qualification. All courses at Level 3 or below are classed as further education. Higher Education is open to students usually aged over 18 – there is no upper age limit!

Higher Education: Will improve your career and earning potential, as well as allowing you to gain specialist knowledge in an area which really interests you.

Can offer a vocational programme that is directly related to particular work areas such as accountancy, engineering or teaching.

Is essential for some careers; for example chartered engineering and architecture.

Will bring together students from a variety of backgrounds. This interaction can enrich the learning process through sharing experience and knowledge.

Swindon CollegeSwindon College is one of the largest higher education providers in Wiltshire and has successfully been delivering higher education qualifications in Swindon since 1904.

Why choose us? BE A NAME AND NOT A NUMBER

As we aren’t a university your lectures are taught in small groups with dedicated tutors allowing individual support and high levels of success.

WHY PAY MORE?

Our fees are considerably lower than those you would pay at university. HE programmes entitle you to a Student Loan or 24 + Advanced Learning Loan which you only start to pay back when you are earning over £21,000 per year (see page 14 for more details).

ESCAPE THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE

We have our own dedicated HE Centre where you can go for some quiet time or to study; there are computers available and facilities that will enable you to use your own laptop. Just around the corner is our HE Team, who are there to support you throughout your studies.

STAMP OF APPROVAL

Our Degrees and Foundation Degrees are awarded by our university partners, meaning you study in Swindon but your qualification is with them. We also work with Edexcel and VTCT as awarding bodies.

MAKE THE MOST OF OUR FACILITIES

We continue to invest in purpose-built facilities to help give you a better learning experience. Our on-site facilities include the Library (LRC), Nursery and HE Centre, not to mention the state-of-the-art industry-standard facilities within each subject area.

The classes are smaller than at a university so we all have individual supportfrom the lecturers.Business Student

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

Swindon is an ideal location for many travel links. The College is located just a short walk from the town centre, Outlet Village, train station, bus station and just a short drive from junction 16 off the M4.

QUALITY PROVISION

The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for Higher Education visited Swindon College and judged that the academic standards, the quality and enhancement of its student learning opportunities and the quality of its information about learning opportunities all meet UK expectations.

The review identified a number of examples of good practice. These include: strong support for student progression into higher education, and a commitment to the employability of students, including the comprehensive links the College has developed with a range of local employers.

SUPPORTING YOU!

Our aim is for you to learn in an environment where you feel fully supported. We have a Student Engagement team on-site and they’re here to ensure you receive all the support you need both inside and outside of your studies at college. January-MayOFFERS AND ACCEPTANCEThis is when universities and colleges will generally make decisions on applications and send out offers to applicants. When you have received all of your offers, you will need to make one of them your Firm Offer (the one you want most) and make one an Insurance Offer (a back-up choice in case you don’t meet the requirements for your Firm Offer). Don’t miss the date to respond or your choices will be cancelled.

It is also important during this time to find out about any financial assistance which might be available to you as a student. This includes bursaries, which are grants from your university or college which don’t have to be paid back.

July-AugustRESULTSBTEC results start to be sent out in mid-July and A Level results are released in mid-August. If you receive your results and they meet the conditions of your Firm Choice then you don’t need to do anything else - your place is secured. If you aren’t going to meet the conditions of your Firm or Insurance Offers, it’s still worth contacting your first choice if you were close to the offer grade, and asking if they will still accept you, otherwise you automatically get your Insurance choice if you have met their entry requirements. If you weren’t holding any offers, you have the option of entering Clearing. This is the process where students are matched with institutions that still have places remaining, see www.ucas.com for more information.

TIMELINE FOR UCASFebruary-JulyRESEARCHMake sure you research your options carefully. Try and visit university and college Open Days which will help you decide what and where you would really like to study. Also ensure you can meet the entry requirements.

June – January APPLYING Applications are made to UCAS during this period and are submitted online. The Swindon College Careers Team will help you with your application and with writing your personal statement, which is the most important part.

Mid-October This is the deadline for applications to Oxford, Cambridge and all Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary choices (but not Nursing).

Mid-December By this time you should have paid your fee to UCAS and submitted your finished application to the Careers Team at Swindon College if you are an existing student. This allows four weeks for us to check your application and to write your reference. Although this is not the deadline, the sooner you can get your application in the better!

Mid-January This is the deadline for UCAS to receive your application. If you have applied via the Careers Team by the mid-December deadline, they will send your application off for you to meet this deadline. If you miss this deadline, you can still apply - contact us for advice.

You should apply for your Student Loan as soon as the process opens in January.

Don’t wait until you have received any offers as this could delay your Loans. There are two available, one to pay your Tuition Fee and one to help with living expenses while you are studying. Visit www.gov.uk/studentfinance for more information.

Graduation CeremonyThe Graduation Ceremony in October is the highlight of the higher education year when hundreds of our students graduate from the College after successfully completing their study programmes in the summer. The day is formal but enjoyable and students process through the town in gowns and mortar boards to the ceremony in a local church. The event is attended by the Mayor and other local dignitaries and ends with an afternoon of entertainment, food and drink with family, friends and college staff.

“Today is the first time we have seen each other since May so it is good to catch up with everyone again”.

“It’s really nice to have my family here as I’m a bit nervous.”

“After all of the hard work over the past few years, this is a great celebration for everybody involved.”

INSPIRE ME Access to Art & Design | Amelia Packham

Faringdon Community College

Amelia 20, is currently studying Access to Art and Design at Swindon College.

After meeting with course leader Denise Roberts at an open evening, Amelia knew

that the Access Art and Design course was the right one for her, she explains:

“Although the course is challenging, the facilities are better than what I expected;

the studios are spacious with all the resources I need to complete my work. The

LRC is stocked with great literature for me to pull information from”.

Clare explains: “The summer school was fantastic, it gave me the opportunity to have a go at a

wide range of things including ceramics, sculpture and life drawing and also

allowed me to see what great facilities the school of art had to offer. I loved this so

much that I enrolled onto the foundation degree.

My course is brilliant; I’m particularly interested in oil painting and using charcoal

to create pieces of work. Our class is small which is great as we share good

practices and bounce ideas between one another. The tutors are so

INSPIRE ME Health & Social Care | Corinna Davidson

Corinna is currently studying on the Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care and works as a NHS Community Nursery Nurse for Great Western Hospital in Swindon providing health advice for families, she explains:

“I work with families of children under school age giving them advice about behaviour, healthy eating, sleeping and general health checks. I am also involved in the baby weighing clinics and health checks which is a lovely job to do.I feel the course has made me into a more critical practitioner and it’s boosted my confidence.

We all get really good support from our tutors at Swindon College, they are all approachable and as we’re only in college once a week, I know I can email them when I’m studying away from the classroom. Our group is small so we’ve got to know each other and support each other throughout each module, we all made a choice to be here so we’re really eager to learn”.

Once she completes the Foundation Degree, Corinna will stay with her employer. Corinna loves her job and hopes the course will give her more career opportunities.

Course Content:The course consists of units of study called modules. Your taught sessions will contain core content and you will also have the opportunity to customise your ‘pathway’ during the course by choosing to undertake competencies that are specific to your setting. With the support of your tutors, you will be able to identify work-based learning outcomes that reflect and support to your individual role and employment needs.

You will attend classes that include:

• Study Skills for Health and Social Care • Science for Health and Social Care

• Social Policy and Welfare Systems • Legal and Ethical Aspects of Care

• Specialist Care Skills • Applying Evidence to Practice

• Applied Social Sciences for Health and Social Care.

Teaching will mainly be undertaken in lectures and seminars and we encourage student participation. You will also have the opportunity to use the clinical skills laboratories.

In addition, you will learn through your own workplace, supported by a supervisor and work-based learning team. The focus of your learning in the workplace will be professional skills specific to your individual role and the completion of a personal portfolio.

Work Placement:Ideally, you are already employed and your current role can serve as your work placement

(providing you have support from your manager). Work placement assessments are key

component of the programme and so you will need to be in a setting within a reasonable

distance from college

Progression Opportunities:Successful completion of the course can lead to the possibility of extending your

qualification to an honours degree in Health and Social Care or the opportunity to take a

further year of more specialist study through the innovative Student Designed Award. Some

health practitioners who achieve the award of Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care

may also wish to apply for a Nursing degree, and may be considered for
