THE CITY

The North East is a great place to study, live and work. Sunderland is a growing city with a diverse culture. It’s a modern, bustling centre that is balanced with relaxing green spaces, stunning coastal scenery and a refreshing attitude to life. Add to that a range of outstanding heritage, cultural and sporting attractions and you will find that Sunderland has everything to offer.

GETTING AROUND

Sunderland is a well-connected city. With Newcastle International Airport just a short drive or train ride away, a direct train link to London Kings Cross and frequent bus and metro services connecting our campuses to all parts of the region, even if you don’t drive, you won’t struggle to get around.

STUDENT NIGHTLIFE

The city centre has an array of bars and restaurants as well as a multi-screen cinema, so there’s no shortage of places to have a good time.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

Various venues across the city and many more across the region play host to regular live music nights, featuring up and coming talent from around the city and beyond.

The city also attracts big acts exclusively to the region at the city’s Stadium of Light, where it has hosted acts such as Coldplay, Take That, Rihanna and Kings of Leon. For theatre-lovers there’s the famous Empire Theatre, the Royalty Theatre and the Washington Arts Centre.

The city also boasts the Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, National Glass Centre and the Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens.

THE RIGHT QUALIFICATION

Choosing the right qualification is important to enable you to progress to where you want to be. The level at which you can study will depend on your personal circumstances. Entry requirements for courses vary between 80-160 UCAS points. However, relevant experience and alternative qualifications will be taken into consideration. Most applicants will receive an individual interview.

HNDS/HNCS

HNDs are approximately equivalent to the first two years of an honours degree course. Programmes tend to be more work-related than typical degree courses. HNDs are usually two years full-time or three years part-time. HNCs are part-time programmes, which take two years to complete. One year part-time ‘HND top-up’ courses are available for those who have an appropriate HNC qualification. Students who successfully complete an HND can apply directly to university to study for an honours degree.

FOUNDATION DEGREES

Foundation degrees are higher education qualifications that provide a valuable link between education and employment. Foundation degrees allow you the chance to study a university degree at the College and gain a qualification, normally in two years, either full or part-time, provided you have a suitable opportunity for workplace and work-based learning. If you want to continue and complete an honours degree, a foundation degree also provides a guaranteed progression route for successful students to study at local universities. They are practical qualifications, designed with employers to give high levels of technical, personal and management skills and knowledge needed in today’s economy.

LEVEL 0 EXTENDED PROGRAMMES

This route is aimed at students with few formal qualifications in the subject area and who need to get the necessary qualification to join an honours degree at university.

These are full-time courses.

TEACHING PROGRAMMES

The College runs a number of part-time programmes that are related to teaching and training. These courses are for practising teachers, lecturers and trainers. The entry requirements vary depending on the particular course you wish to study. Therefore, the courses are aimed at students who need appropriate qualifications to further their careers in teaching. All courses lead to qualifications awarded by the University of Sunderland.

PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES

Postgraduate diploma programmes are designed for various purposes, such as training for students wishing to change discipline, develop knowledge within a discipline or preparing for a master’s degree programme. Some of our professional programmes offer exemption from aspects of full masters’ programmes, for example the Chartered Management Institute programmes usually comprise modules with a total of 120 credits.

ACCESS COURSES

The College offers specialist preparatory courses called ‘Access to Higher Education.’ These courses prepare you for future study, at a higher level. We have specialist courses for entry to professions such as nursing, health science, teaching, social work, art, photography and counselling. We also cater for a variety of other courses such as media, science, law, psychology and many more.

FEES

Our fee structure enables you to choose the most cost-effective way to achieve your qualification. Achieving your qualification in steps as your life and budget allows it. For advice, guidance and information on payment options and financial support packages available, please contact us on 0191 511 6000.

FULL-TIME COURSES

The College offers a range of full-time HND programmes and the fee stated is per year of study. Full-time HND students will also benefit from a free term-time travel ticket. This can be used across the region, the Shields Ferry and National Rail services between Sunderland and Blaydon.

Fees for full-time programmes accredited by the University of Sunderland differ from those for HND programmes. Students studying with the University of Sunderland may be eligible for a study grant.

PART-TIME COURSES

PAYING FOR YOUR COURSE

There is a lot of support available to help you pay for your course. Part-time students are able to apply for the same levels of student finance as full-time students, this means that you will not need to pay for your course up front, and you will only pay back your loan when you’re earning over £21,000 per year.

FULL AND PART-TIME COURSESThere are two main costs you will need to consider: tuition fees and living costs.

TUITION FEES

Full and part-time students are eligible for a government loan to pay for tuition fees. This means that you will not have to pay anything up front and you only start paying for your loan in April following completion of your course, in addition you will only start to repay when you are earning over £21,000 a year.

If you do not earn over £21,000 a year you will not need to pay back your loan. If you do earn over £21,000 then you will pay nine per cent* of the value above £21,000.

*Correct at time of print

LIVING COSTS

Living costs cover things like accommodation, food and travel costs. This will vary depending on where you study.

If you’re studying full-time, loans, grants and scholarships are available to help you with your living costs. What you will receive will depend on your personal circumstances.

GRANTS

The important thing about grants is that, unlike a loan, they do not have to be paid back. If you are eligible, the amount you receive depends on your household income. If you’re a student from a lower income background, they can help pay towards your living costs (food, travel, accommodation etc) while you study.

DISABLED STUDENTS’ ALLOWANCE

Extra financial help will be available to disabled students studying through the Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs). You can get DSAs if you are on a full-time or part-time higher education course. DSAs help pay for extra costs you might have as a direct result of your disability, mental health condition or specific learning difficulty. The allowances can help with the cost of having a person support you, such as a note taker, items of specialist equipment, travel and other course related costs.

The amount of DSAs you get doesn’t depend on your household income but it does depend on your needs assessment.
